1. The Benchmark of Acting Excellence Let’s kick things off with a performance so gut-wrenching, it makes every actor question their life choices: Sophie’s Choice. I mean, come on, Streep’s portrayal of Sophie is the yardstick every thespian measures themselves against. It’s like saying you’re a chef but can’t boil water. Alan J. Pakula made a solid choice casting Meryl after she campaigned for the role, and she didn’t just nail it; she set the bar in the stratosphere. Plus, the film’s delicate cinematography and sympathetic score? Just icing on the cake. 2. That Glance Over The Spectacles Next up,...

At the revamped Golden Globes, broadcast on CBS for the first time, the news of the night was that, save for one or two genuine shocks, everything unfolded pretty much as had been widely predicted.
First-time host Jo Koy presided over the telecast, which took place, as always, at the Beverly Hilton. During his largely jokeless monologue, he did a bit about how Barry Keoghan’s penis in “Saltburn” somehow ended up as Bradley Cooper’s nose in “Maestro,” and made an Ozempic joke that involved “The Color Purple.” So one could say that the biggest snub of the night was the one Koy created for his own career.
There were, however, some key categories that held surprises — especially in that Globes voters seemed so allergic to “Barbie” that we could almost hear them say, “Bye, Barbie!”

This article contains spoilers for The Traitors s1 and episodes 1-3 of The Traitors s2
The Traitors is back for a second series and with it a castle, a Winkleman, challenges, amateur detective work and some slowly emerging villains of the show. A game show (of sorts), with contestants competing for a share of a large sum of money accumulated each episode by winning tasks, the meat of The Traitors is mind games that bookend each episode, when one player gets banished, and another gets “murdered”.
Three episodes have landed – all at once on iPlayer, one a night on BBC One. From episode four they’ll arrive on iPlayer in line with their broadcast dates. Three eps in and we’ve had enough time with the contestants to start to get a sense of who the runners and riders will be, and what tactics will get you banished quicker than a bad smell.

Actor Amanda Seyfried credited Mean Girls for giving her career a boost. But Mamma Mia was the movie she felt truly made her a star.
How ‘Mamma Mia’ helped Amanda Seyfried’s film career more than ‘Mean Girls’ Amanda Seyfried | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Seyfried felt she enjoyed some nice exposure for Mean Girls. But she didn’t believe her presence was truly felt in the film industry until she did Mamma Mia. The feature was a musical that saw Seyfried play Meryl Streep’s daughter, and is one of Seyfried’s biggest blockbuster hits. According to The Numbers, it earned $695.5 million at the box-office.
Given its huge viewership, it perhaps reintroduced Seyfried to a much broader audience than perhaps even Mean Girls could reach. So it’s easy to see why the actor saw Mamma Mia as her true breakthrough role.

Here we go again, again?
As part of an oral history of the “Mamma Mia” films published by Vogue this week, Oscar winner Meryl Streep said she’d be happy to return for another “Mamma Mia” film – despite her character having been killed off in the previous installment.
“I’m up for anything. I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there,” Streep said. “I told [producer] Judy [Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate [my character] Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”

“I dare you to show me one person who doesn’t want a third ‘Mamma Mia!,'” Seyfried said. “Nobody is saying no, but nobody is saying yes either. The powers that be probably can’t afford us, to be honest.”
The “Mean Girls” alum continued, “I hate to say it, because would I do ‘Mamma Mia 3’ for free — of course I would — but that’s not the business we’re in. What’s fair is fair, and I feel like a third film is going to come down to something stupid like whether or not...

I remember going to the movie theater in 1998 to see “The Truman Show” for the first time and being blown away. It was the scariest non-horror film I’d ever seen up to that point (and maybe still), showing us a world of utter consumerism and commodification and its horrific impact on a man who didn’t know he was born to literally be a reality show. It seemed inconceivable that something like what happens to Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) could really occur. This was, after all, the era before we started carrying around smartphones and mini computers in our pocket, before anything called Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and years before even MySpace came into being – and before we were all deputized as amateur filmmakers thanks to the still camera and video we keep with us and use to publish sometimes hourly.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Episode 5.
Love was in the air in Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” with the installment exploring Oliver (Martin Short), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Charles’ (Steve Martin) romantic relationships. Each of those connections brought new developments around the third season’s central mystery, involving the murder of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd).
“We’ve never really done that but it felt like a good crux halfway through the season to go, ‘let’s dive into that personal relationship story for each of them’ and watch this train of some feeling is happening simultaneous with a real complication around the case,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap in an interview facilitated by his personal publicist in accordance with WGA guidelines.
In Oliver and Loretta’s (Meryl Streep) case, the pair go on a “lovely, wild, complicated” date that...

Oliver’s first date with Loretta gets off to an extremely rough start in Tuesday’s Only Murders in the Building.
TVLine has your exclusive first look at Episode 5, which features the return of Meryl Streep. Last we left the Arconia, Oliver had just texted his leading lady and asked her to dinner. This week, he arrives at Loretta’s place for a home-cooked meal and discovers that she’s not much of a chef. Even worse, she’s making him a pork chop, which goes against his strict diet of Dimas’ Deli dips.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle the drama categories and consider upset possibilities in supporting actress.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and Emmy voting is in view — even if the ceremony is twisting in the wind without a date or even year. But I woke up this morning not concerned about “television’s biggest night” but the Best Drama Supporting Actress race. To me, with my “Succession” bias turned way up, this feels like the most competitive category of the drama acting races. We both think “Succession” should win the other three acting awards — though I’m sure some pundits still think Kieran Culkin is vulnerable to an in-show vote-split with Jeremy Strong. But “Succession” doesn’t necessarily have an easy winner in supporting actress,...

Meryl Streep added another iconic role under her belt by starring in the 2006 comedy hit Devil Wears Prada. But there was a point where she confessed to one of her co-stars that it wasn’t easy playing a character that cold.

Streep knew she had a unique movie in her hands with The Devil Wears Prada. The 2006 feature saw Streep play the powerful fashion editor Miranda Priestly. Right away, Streep expected that the film would resonate with audiences. Given the film’s commercial and critical success, it turns out her initial instincts were right.
“Right in the beginning, reading the script, I thought, ‘Nobody’s seen this before and the girls are going to like this!’ I didn’t have any doubt about it. It’s very rare and you...

Since leaving the role of boy-wizard extraordinaire Harry Potter, a character that made him a household name, Daniel Radcliffe has played it anything but safe. Rather than going for a quick payday by attaching himself to another lucrative franchise, Radcliffe instead has sought out independent filmmakers, many making their feature debut, for the opportunity to play a wide variety of characters that would expand his range as an actor. And expand it they did, with Radcliffe in his post-“Potter” period portraying characters who range from a video game nerd to a literary giant, an evil billionaire, a South African hero and even a corpse. Try that, Meryl.
Radcliffe didn’t limit himself to films either, as he brought his fearlessness to Manhattan, triumphing in Broadway productions of Peter Shaffer’s “Equus,” Martin McDonagh’s “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” and the legendary musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,...
