Fresh from its Cannes premiere George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” dashed into the lead at the South Korea cinema box office. In doing so, it deposed “The Roundup: Punishment,” the local crime actioner that has dominated Korean cinemagoing for the past month.
“Furiosa” earned $575,000 from 75,400 ticket sales on Wednesday, giving it a Korean total of $597,000, including a sprinkling of preview showings, according to data from the Kobis tracking service that is operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
South Korea was not the only territory to enjoy the “Furiosa” release on May 22 – others included France, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines – but by virtue of its geography and reliable, publicly-available data, it becomes the first to report the film’s commercial credentials.

Anya Taylor-Joy is opening up about why she has fought for several of her characters to express on-screen rage.
During a wide-ranging interview for a GQ cover story, the Emmy-nominated actress revealed the instances where she pushed to change an emotional scene that saw her character crying to one that invoked anger.
“I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for fighting for feminine rage, which is a strange thing, because I’m not promoting violence — but I am promoting women being seen as people,” Taylor-Joy explained. “We have reactions that are not always dainty or unmessy.”
The first time the actress advocated for “female rage” was for her feature acting debut in Robert Eggers’ The Witch. Her character Thomasin is initially meant to cry when she is dragged from the family’s farmyard and accused of being the evil presence inside the house. However, Taylor-Joy said she couldn’t...

George Miller's Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, revs into theaters this weekend, and while the movie is quite a bit more brutal than our previous trip to the Wasteland, it seems there was one scene that proved a little too gruesome for the legendary filmmaker.
Spoilers relating to the ending of the film follow.
During an interview with GQ, star Anya Taylor-Joy revealed that she convinced Miller to shoot a scene in which her character cuts out the tongue of her nemesis, the cruel warlord Demenetus (Chris Hemsworth), who was responsible for the death of her mother - and plenty more besides.
However, the gory moment didn't make the theatrical cut of the film.
“It was really important to me that the confrontation between Furiosa and Dementus be a physical one, and that it was hard-won,” said the actress. “It needed it; she needed it. I...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga roared through Cannes before it launches in theaters Friday after nearly 10 years in development. The prequel film builds on the Australian wasteland universe established in George Miller’s four other movies of the franchise: Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
In Fury Road, which became the first in the franchise to receive Academy Award nominations (winning six out of ten awards), Charlize Theron portrayed Imperator Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role in this next installment, which shows her backstory of getting kidnapped by Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Hord. At 10 years old, she is forced to grow up fast, and while she fights for survival, her only wish is to return home and reunite with her family.

Anya Taylor-Joy said an interview with British GQ that she has often fought for her characters to express rage on screen. It turns out there have been several films where in the script her character is supposed to cry, but Taylor-Joy just didn’t think that was the right emotional beat. She decided to speak up for herself and successfully convinced her directors to let her character have more rage.
“I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for fighting for feminine rage, which is a strange thing, because I’m not promoting violence – but I am promoting women being seen as people,” Taylor-Joy told the publication. “We have reactions that are not always dainty or un-messy.”

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 24 is George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which tells the origin story of the wasteland warrior princess before her run-in with Mad Max starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Alyla Browne. Also hitting theaters is family film “The Garfield Movie” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” which follows a straight-edge professor who discovers his calling as a fake assassin starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio and Molly Bernard. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “The Beach Boys,” a documentary about the legendary surf-rock band, and “Solo,” a foreign...

One of the most promising Hollywood directors to-date, Robert Eggers is also an undeniable expert in modern horror, and good horror at that. Having started his directorial career back in 2015 with a folk horror movie The Witch, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Eggers now has a short, yet very impressive portfolio of four high-rated horror flicks with the most recent of them hitting the cinemas later this year.
Though Eggers isn’t that prolific as many fans of his would want him to be, he’s definitely the one to go with a slower pace, leaving more space for each film to be polished, and seems like he has a right source to turn to when there’s need for inspiration.
In one of his previous interviews, Eggers stated that Stanley Cubrick’s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson, eventually got to be his biggest source of inspiration when he turned to the director’s chair.

The fifth entrant in the Mad Max saga is all set to take things up a notch. If Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s trailer left any doubts up about how good the flick would turn out to be, its Australian premiere has proved its detractors (though they were small in number) wrong. Just as the movie was nearing its release, Anna Taylor-Joy has dropped a statement that could very well go on to hamper the movie’s chances in the long run and haunt George Miller & Co.
George Miller wanted no transition in the casting of Furiosa

We’re about to witness one of the most brutal battles in the entire Mad Max saga. Immortan Joe and Dementus were nothing compared to our heroine’s final and most deadly enemy: a chubby orange cat named Garfield. Indeed, we’re about to see one of the biggest and most unlikely box office battles of the summer. While most box office analysts believe audiences will choose Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, George Miller’s epic prequel to Fury Road, as their Memorial Day movie of choice, family audiences heading out this holiday weekend may make The Garfield Movie a stronger-than-expected opponent.
I’m expecting Furiosa to make about $40 million this weekend, with Garfield in a close second place with $35 million. Why so low on Furiosa? I have a few reasons. For one thing, even if Fury Road is one of the greatest action films of all time, it...

These mini-series are perfectly crafted to be devoured in just a few hours, making them ideal for a single evening's viewing. Here are 12 high-quality mini-series that you simply can't miss:
Netflix has mastered the art of binge-watching like no other streaming giant. It understands how much its subscribers enjoy watching multiple episodes in one sitting, moving seamlessly from one episode to the next without pause. Not surprisingly, Netflix has invested heavily in this format, producing a plethora of mini-series, each with fewer than ten episodes.
It's worth noting that many series on this list are what one might call "underappreciated." While they have been discussed to some extent, they haven't reached blockbuster status like Chernobyl did. Nevertheless, each of these series is worth your time, packing a full, compelling narrative into just eight episodes or fewer.
And a word of caution: most of these Netflix mini-series are so good that...

We don’t know very much about The Gorge, the latest film from Sinister, The Black Phone, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. Announced a year and a half ago, it’s an Apple Original Film coming our way from Skydance Productions and has Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) in the lead roles – and it has just earned a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board for intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements.
Taylor-Joy recently told the folks at Collider that she was drawn to The Gorge because “I was really excited to work with Miles [Teller]. We’re all good friends, but we’ve been wanting to work together for a really long time. I think I was intrigued by the fact that it was semi genre-less in the sense that it was both a...

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

When HBO delivered House of the Dragon, audiences were certainly impressed. The series perfectly showcases the power dynamics that the audience loved in the original series in a completely new fashion, following a story that feels almost brand new. The excellence of the 2022 series can be perfectly encapsulated in one scene.
Olivia Cooke in House of the Dragon [Credit: HBO]The eighth episode of the first season was certainly an emotional rollercoaster. While a lot was already going on and a lot of iconic moments happened in the duration of this, one scene stands out like no other. A moment that was supposed to be the most important for Rhaenyra Targaryen, ended up being the biggest show of power for Viserys Targaryen.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is upon us. The spin-off is getting mostly positive reactions, with a bevy of its criticisms coming from the film’s length and pacing. However, the consensus is that 79-year-old George Miller brings back the action and excitement that made Mad Max: Fury Road such a standout spectacle in the sea of frenetic action blockbusters. While praise belongs to Miller and the film’s star, Anya Taylor-Joy, the man of the hour is Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the villain of the movie.
Hemsworth has recently stated that he would get in his own way by improvising too much on Thor: Love and Thunder. However, a new profile in MovieMaker reveals that Hemsworth found it easier to disappear into his character for Furiosa thanks to his unique look — namely the prosthetic nose. He explained, “The nose, the beard, the kind of wig, all the sort of prosthetics and the costume,...

Mad Max is a staple name that comes to mind whenever action movies are discussed, and reasonably so. As director George Miller’s epic dystopian movie series has inspired numerous creators, it has revitalized the landscape of the action genre. In the course of four movies, the series has also introduced some of the most iconic characters in pop fiction, namely the titular protagonist, the cop turned vagabond drifter, Max Rockatansky, and the more intriguing, fierce warrior-survivor protagonist of Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa. Portrayed by an impeccable Charlize Theron, who delivered an unforgettable performance as the rugged survivor, Furiosa was quickly recognized as the definitive female action hero of the last decade.
Even keeping aside the extremely strong response from the audience, there was more than enough of a backstory hinted at for Furiosa as a character in Fury Road and enough curiosity regarding her origin to warrant a solo movie of her own.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a triumphant return to the harsh, exhilarating world of the Mad Max franchise. Directed by George Miller, this prequel to Fury Road dives acts as an origin story of the Imperator Furiosa (played impeccably by Anya Taylor-Joy throughout) delivering a truly stunning array of action set pieces and an emotionally charged storyline.
The film traces the origins of Furiosa, exploring her transformation from a young captive to a relentless warrior. Taylor-Joy brings a fierce and wonderfully nuanced performance that captures both the vulnerability and strength of this fearless protagonist. Her journey is one of survival, empowerment, but mostly vengeance at any cost. It is the desperate cry of a child snatched from everything she knows and taken to a place where all hope has died.

Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed she pushed George Miller to film a brutal moment in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga that symbolized “female rage,” but the scene did not make the final cut.
The actress told GQ that she created a scene in which Imperator Furiosa cuts out the tongue of Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), with the magazine describing it as Taylor-Joy’s effort to “out-crazy” Miller.

The actress told GQ that she created a scene in which Imperator Furiosa cuts out the tongue of Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), with the magazine describing it as Taylor-Joy’s effort to “out-crazy” Miller.

With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be a good time to look back at the character’s origins in Mad Max: Fury Road. Like every other entry in the Mad Max franchise surprisingly enough, both Furiosa and Fury Road were released a substantially long time after the previous film and went through several major changes throughout development.
In the case of Fury Road specifically, it was initially conceived by director George Miller in 1987 before finally entering pre-production in 1998 with original series star Mel Gibson attached, only for the production to quickly spiral out of control in the wake of 9/11, the Iraq War, various location shoot issues, George Miller’s other priorities, and controversies surrounding Mel Gibson that made bringing him back a very bad idea.

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Max Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

After nearly a decade, director George Miller has returned to the Wasteland with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The film serves as a prequel to 2015's Oscar-winning, dangerous epic "Mad Max: Fury Road," which has garnered a reputation as one of the greatest action films ever made. Miller enlisted Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Queen's Gambit") and Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") to tell the tale of Furiosa years before we met her in "Fury Road." With the film hitting theaters this week, critics have weighed in, and while many are praising Miller's latest, others have vocally disliked it. So, what are critics saying about the long-awaited film?
The latest entry in the "Mad Max" franchise centers on a young Furiosa (Anya-Taylor Joy) who is snatched from the Green Place and winds up in the hands of the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). As he goes to war with the Immortan Joe for control of the Wasteland,...

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.
Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

This Dune: Part Two article contains spoilers.
For most casual fans and hardcore spice addicts alike, Dune: Part Two is a triumph. Not only did Denis Villeneuve get to complete his visionary adaptation of the first Frank Herbert Dune novel (phew!) but he was also able to infuse his cinematic trip to Arrakis with modern sensibilities. For longtime fans, Dune: Part Two is not the most faithful filmed version of the first book, but it’s much closer to the text than the 1984 version and feels bigger and grander than the (more faithful) 2000 miniseries version. To put it simply, Dune: Part Two, combined with Part One, is (probably) the best-filmed version of Dune we’re likely to ever get. Fidelity to a book is never entirely possible with adaptations, nor is it necessarily desirable. As Villeneuve told Den of Geek back in 2021: “When you adapt it’s an act of vandalism.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive it has been Kevin Costner. Okay, well Clint Eastwood too. And that has been true right from the beginning of his career when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985, and he also made an impression as title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Oscar-winning 1990 Best Picture Dances With Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. For the past few seasons he has prominently been involved in a more contemporary take in his hit TV series, Yellowstone. But without question his most ambitious and sprawling swing yet, Horizon: An American Saga, which kicked off...

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

Timothée Chalamet is one of the most talented stars in the industry working today, who first made a name for himself for his outstanding performance in Call Me By Your Name. The role earned him a nomination for the Best Actors category at the Oscars. Since then, he never had to look back as he went on to create a streak of blockbuster films such as Beautiful Boy, Dune, Wonka, Little Women, and many more.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron took the Mad Max franchise into a new and modern direction when they both starred in George Miller’s 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Portraying the roles of Max and Furiosa respectively, the film was as chaotic as it was brutal and Theron had to be prepared.

Being a toughened warrior, the character of Furiosa was as hard as it was impactful. With Theron portraying the role, the actress had to go beyond the normal and create a bulkier body just so that she could fight properly. Citing co-star Tom Hardy as one of the reasons, Charlize Theron revealed why she exercised so much for Mad Max: Fury Road!

Eyes follow Anya Taylor-Joy whenever she steps on a red carpet, and the descriptions of her ensembles that follow often include adjectives like glamorous, ethereal, angelic, and the like. But when she faced photographers’ lenses in Sydney in early May for the world premiere of George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, what followed was a series of exclamation points. Edgy! Electric! Striking! Furiosa-approved!
Taylor-Joy donned a vintage look from Paco Rabanne’s spring 1996 haute couture collection. The sheer chain-mail creation featured triangular and oval diamonté adornments with arrow spikes jutting out from both the body of the dress and the matching headpiece.
With her appearance, Taylor-Joy became the latest star to fashionably fuel a trend that has been described as method dressing or character cosplay. It has felt omnipresent as of late, thanks to style stars like Zendaya, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Kristen Stewart and Florence Pugh. Though...

Actor Charlize Theron has often changed her weight to suit the needs of her role. In Mad Max: Fury Road, she opted to put on a lot of muscle to showcase her character’s strength. But her transformation might’ve been more dramatic than she thought it’d be.

Theron had a specific look that she wanted to achieve for Mad Max. Playing a military soldier of sorts, she wanted to look believable in a role that would require her to fight other trained combatants. She also gained the muscle that she did because she felt some female action heroes didn’t look very physically formidable in their action movies.

Anya Taylor-Joy wearing a headpiece never fails to wow me. Headdresses give her a particular charm, and I wouldn’t mind seeing her show up to the Furiosa promotional tour with a variety of headpieces—like the flapper chainmail hat she wore to the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga photocall during the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Taylor-Joy’s presence at the Cannes Furiosa photocall further cemented my adoration for her—even more so than when she showed up in a Christian Dior ensemble at the film’s world premiere during the festival.
From her 1920s headdress to her contemporary skirt suit and minimalist heels, let’s delve deeper into Anya Taylor-Joy’s latest red-carpet ensemble.

Nine years ago, director George Miller came kind of out of nowhere to deliver one of the greatest action movies of all time with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Miller revived the long-dead franchise with a film so universally beloved the only shocking thing is that it took nine years to get another "Mad Max" movie made. Well, here we are, staring down the barrel of the release of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," which tells the origin story of Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in "Fury Road"). The question is, can this prequel build on the audience that has come to adore "Fury Road" in the years since its release? Warner Bros. will need that to be the case for the film to be an outright hit at the box office.
"Furisa" hits theaters next weekend and will be opening directly against "The Garfield Movie." Admittedly, these films are both playing for radically different audiences.

It really does seem like legendary Australian filmmaker George Miller cannot miss his major projects. It really does. The visionary is the one who provided us with the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that initially starred Mel Gibson in the titular role before he was replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road. The latter is also known for introducing Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron, a character so popular that Miller decided to make a prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which premieres globally next week but has had its Cannes premiere only recently. Anya Taylor-Joy leads the movie, and based on the reaction at Cannes, Miller will have another major hit!
Furiosa is set to be released in theaters on May 23, 2024, which is next week, but the Cannes premiere came this week in Cannes, where it was screened as an out-of-competition feature, and the reactions were great!
