Charles Melton’s awards campaign for his breakout role in “May December” started in May when the Todd Haynes drama co-starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman premiered at Cannes.
Since then, Melton has gone on to receive a slew of award nominations and wins. He picked up Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award noms and won a Gotham for outstanding supporting performance.
Fans of the film, however, were disappointed when Melton didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, and the movie only earned one for original screenplay.
But, I’m glad to report that Melton is doing just fine. “I’m happy,” Melton told me Wednesday night at Cultured’s art and film issue dinner (Melton and Lakeith Stanfield appear on separate covers of the magazine). “I just got back from Hawaii. I was just relaxing and processing and getting a nice little suntan. I reconnected with my friends and family...

After four consecutive years covering the Sundance Film Festival, January 2024 was a good time for a break. That said, the attention and interest in the numerous films submitted to the festival, as well as the emergence of new stars in front of and behind the screen, remained intact. Suncoast was one of the better received movies, and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) won the Breakthrough Performance award, so expectations were higher than usual, although once again, I started watching without knowing anything about the narrative.
Suncoast tells the story of Doris (Parker), a shy teenager with complicated family issues. Her brother has brain cancer, so any day could be his last, while her mother, Kristine (Laura Linney), directs all her attention to her son, leading to a gradual distance from Doris. Filmmaker Laura Chinn takes basic coming-of-age formulas and transforms them into a carefully written, mesmerizing study of numerous...

Taylor Swift Changes Profile Pics to Black-and-White, Possibly Teasing reputation (Taylor’s Version)
Taylor Swift has changed all of her profile pictures across social media to black-and-white, prompting speculation that she may be teasing the release of reputation (Taylor’s Version). Update: After she won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights at the 2024 Grammy Awards, Swift made an unexpected announcement: she will be releasing a “brand new” album, The Tortured Poets Department, on April 19th.
The mysterious move was noticed on Sunday morning, when eagle-eyed Swifties reported that Swift’s profile pictures — a shot of her from the artwork of Midnights — were switched out for black-and-white versions. If Swifties’ cryptographic skills are on-point, this could be a reference to the black-and-white aesthetics of Swift’s 2017 release, reputation.
Backing Swifties’ case, there have been murmurs of a forthcoming reputation re-release for a few weeks. For starters, since the arrival of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) last October, reputation and Swift’s self-titled debut...

Elisabeth Moss is going to be a mom.
The Emmy winning star of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale confirmed paparazzi-fueled speculation during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday by revealing that she is, in fact, expecting a child. The 41-year-old actress appeared visibly pregnant as she walked out from the side of the stage to take a seat next to Kimmel, who cut right to the chase. “Are you pregnant or just an incredibly committed method actor?” Kimmel asked, to which she replied, “A little bit of both.”
The baby talk proved to be relatively brief as Moss said that she’s “really lucky” and that her pregnancy thus far has “been going really well.” She did not name the baby’s father but did ask Kimmel for advice. The beloved host, father to four children, recalled some words of wisdom he received from Bill Murray.

There’s a core of authentically devastating family experience and personal investment that saves Suncoast from its unskilled handling, giving this grief drama, coming-of-age combo a heart to counter its predictability. Cynics too often roll their eyes while generalizing about the tired formula of the “Sundance movie,” but this one ticks all the boxes and even features an impossibly saintly character played by Woody Harrelson, who could have been conceived expressly for Park City audiences hungry for the prescribed dosage of funny-sad feels. On that elementary level, actor Laura Chinn’s first effort as writer-director gets by.
What makes Suncoast more palatable than those unpromising elements would suggest is the knowledge that Chinn is working from the autobiographical kernel of losing her brother to cancer as a teenager in 2005, when what should have been his peaceful final few months of hospice care were disrupted by the media circus and sanctimonious...

There’s an ambitious story at the heart of Laura Chinn’s feature debut “Suncoast.” Based on Chinn’s own childhood experiences, the film is about a teenager named Doris (Nico Parker) with a brain cancer-riddled brother dying in the same hospice care where cultural lightning rod Terri Schiavo is also ailing. Doris just wants to experience the normal ups and downs of high school, but she has to deal with her sibling’s condition and her overbearing mother (Laura Linney). On top of that, Doris is confronted by the very questions of what death means by the protestors outside the facility calling Schiavo’s husband a murderer for wanting to end her vegetative state.
It’s a lot to capture in under two hours, and while there are some lovely beats in Chinn’s film, it’s ultimately too unfocused in the way it approaches its many themes, with...

Elisabeth Moss is hard at work on her upcoming movie Shell and she’s reuniting with The Handmaid’s Tale co-star Max Minghella for the new project!
The Emmy-winning actress was spotted alongside Haim‘s Este Haim while walking around set on Monday (January 8) in Los Angeles.
It’s unclear if Este has joined the project or if she is just visiting set.
In Shell, struggling actress Samantha (Moss) is given an opportunity to get a free trial at Shell, a pioneering health and beauty company which promises to keep its clients looking young forever. Samantha’s life and career is transformed by the treatment, and she develops a burgeoning friendship with Shell’s CEO, the ultra-glamorous Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson). When a string of former Shell patients go missing under mysterious circumstances, including popular social media star Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber), Samantha starts to fear she may be in danger herself.

A recent 2020 Black List ranked un-produced screenplay that quickly moved into production with the support of the Searchlight folks (the film will likely receive a Hulu release in 2024), Laura Chinn landed the likes of Nico Parker, Laura Linney and Woody Harrelson for her directorial debut — a personal tale about her upbringing. Production on Suncoast took place in September of last year in Charleston — and most recently she landed Este Haim (yes that Haim) and Chris Stracey to compose the score. The youth-oriented film also includes Nico Parker, Ella Anderson, Daniella Perkins, Amarr and Ariel Martin.

The growing pains and dramatic throes of girlhood can be character building, traumatic, and cathartic — for both cinematic protagonists and their audience. It’s certainly not an easy time for the heroine at the center of “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” whose impending rite-of-passage ushers in an adulthood she’s not quite ready to handle. Director Sammi Cohen and screenwriter Alison Peck bestow this hilarious, heartrending adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s novel with an uplifting, effervescent vision and vitality, giving voice to a young Jewish girl’s struggle to figure out who she is before the most important night of her life so far.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.
Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

Bel Powley stars in the National Geographic series “A Small Light” as Miep Gies, the woman who helped hide Otto Frank and his family during WWII. During a reception for the show Thursday at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood, the actor recalled being on set when she first heard about Kanye West’s antisemitic comments in October 2022.
“We were filming the show when all of the Kanye stuff was happening,” Powley told me. “I was obviously living in the world of the show, which has a lot of Nazi rhetoric because we’re making a show about the Nazi occupation in 1942, but then suddenly seeing and hearing that same rhetoric spoken now by a world-famous celebrity with huge influence was so freaky and unsettling and saddening.”

Remi Wolf has returned with her first new song of 2023: “Prescription,” an impassioned single celebrating the sublime feeling of new love. Watch the lyric video for the tune below.
With a retro backbeat, nostalgic synth melodies, and an impressive, moving vocal performance, “Prescription” captures Wolf’s prowess as an artist — the same prowess that made her a CoSigned artist in 2021. Lyrically, it conveys the 27-year-old’s welcoming, humanist touch, and was inspired by her friend, rapper and director Boots Riley. The song will be featured in his upcoming TV show, I’m a Virgo.

When the clock struck midnight, a new music era began for Taylor Swift as she debuted her 10th studio album, Midnights.
When announcing the album, Swift hinted that it would share more personal stories, something she moved away from with her Folklore and Evermore albums, and described it as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.”
“This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams,” Swift wrote. “The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching — hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve…we’ll meet ourselves.”
Fans have been left wondering what direction and sounds the new era would bring following Swift’s last indie folk chapter, Folklore and Evermore.

“Do Revenge” was in jeopardy of losing one or both of its stars when a twist of fate allowed director Jennifer Kaitlyn Robinson to cast her dream performers. In fact, she was able to move production to Atlanta a month before filming began in order to keep Maya Hawke, who was filming “Stranger Things” Season 4 at the time, as antagonist Eleanor in the film.
In the Netflix teen dark comedy, Hawke costars as Eleanor alongside Camila Mendes, who plays the other half of the deceitful duo as Drea Torres, the fallen “it” girl.
“We cast the movie in 2020. Cami and Maya both signed on, and then ‘Stranger Things’ pushed, which means that in our window where we were making the movie we technically lost Maya,” Robinson said in a recent zoom interview with TheWrap. “If we had waited for Maya to complete ‘Stranger Things,’ we would have lost Cami and...

Exclusive: HBO’s hit comedy-drama series The White Lotus recently finished filming its second season at Italy’s Lumina Studios to the north of Rome.
As previously documented, the show filmed most of its second season in the San Domenico Palace Taormina and on location around Sicily in the south of Italy. The project then quietly filmed for one month in late summer at Lumina, which recently signed a six-year strategic pact with resurgent Italian studio Cinecittà.
Iconic facility Cinecittá is growing its capacity. Such has been the demand for studio space that it has needed to house some productions at satellite venues, including Lumina, which has four sound stages.
It’s a sign of the growing interest in Italy as a production destination that Lumina and Cinecittá were able to reel in one of the buzziest U.S. shows going. Season one, set at a dysfunctional resort in Hawaii,...

Despite reports of Gen-z’s progressive politics, it appears hyper-awareness around sexuality, consent, and toxic masculinity have only made high school popularity contests more sophisticated. That is, if we’re to take the outlandish feminist satire running through Netflix’s dark teen comedy “Do Revenge” at face value, anyway. If two-faced men’s groups and psychedelic mushroom stings seem a little ridiculous, it’s all part of the sickly fun and games of “Do Revenge,”
Starring Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”) and Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as two unlikely allies in a battle for teen justice, “Do Revenge” is a funny feminist take on the mainstream high school comedy. Touching lightly on class awareness and queer politics, the girls are firmly in control of this candy-coated world — though only one can come out on top. As their Machiavellian quest for revenge leads to some unlikely revelations, the self-righteous anti-heroines prove that boys...

Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke play teens swapping revenge plots in this enjoyable, if overlong, throwback teen comedy
Do Revenge, a sharp Netflix dark comedy starring Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke as vengeance-obsessed high schoolers, is a virtual parade of teen movie nostalgia – a shopping mall of homages, if you will. The students at posh Rosehill Academy in Miami wear ludicrously elaborate outfits, a la Clueless. Popular kids lounge on a fountain, a la Scream. There’s a tour of Rosehill’s cliques – the zodiac thoughts club, the theater nerds – a la Mean Girls and 10 Things I Hate About You. As in She’s All That or Clueless or countless others, Mendes’s Drea, a stone-cold striver singularly focused on getting into – where else? – Yale, gives awkward newcomer Eleanor (Hawke) a makeover. Rosehill’s principal, the only adult character, is played by 90s star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The crowd at Haim's July 21 London show were given a special treat as the band brought Taylor Swift on stage. The 32-year-old, who was dressed in the same Louis Vuitton leather pants as the rest of the band, performed a mashup of her song "Love Story" with Haim's hit "Gasoline."
The group, consisting of sisters Danielle, Alana, and Este Haim, have been wowing crowds on their One More Haim Tour this summer. During the show at London's O2 Arena, they stopped midway through a song before Alana made an announcement. "Wait, you guys. We're in London - we can't play London without bringing out a special guest," she said. "Because not only is this person that I'm about to bring out the most incredible singer, songwriter, producer, f*cking amazing person all around, she's one of our close friends."
Swift then appeared on the stage as the crowd went wild.

Este Haim is most famously known as a sister. In addition to shredding bass and serving face at Haim shows around the world, she played a version of herself opposite sisters Danielle and Alana (and their parents) in last year’s “Licorice Pizza.” But somewhere between selling out Madison Square Garden and attending the Oscars, the eldest member of the trio has quietly been carving out her own path as a composer.
In 2021, she and fellow musician Christopher Stracey made their compositional debut with “Maid,” the Netflix limited series starring Margaret Qualley. Early into the process, a second opportunity rolled around by coincidence or perhaps fate. During a late-night coffee break, the duo overheard some producer friends talking about “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” indie wunderkind Cooper Raiff’s new film about a college graduate who works as a “party starter” at bar and bat mitzvahs.

During a late-night coffee break, the duo overheard some producer friends talking about “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” indie wunderkind Cooper Raiff’s new film about a college graduate who works as a “party starter” at bar and bat mitzvahs.

Este Haim, arguably the most demonstrative member of the sister-trio Haim on stage, has really been demonstrating behind the scenes what she’s musically capable of, with her move into TV and film scoring. She’s being joined in that crossover by her newfound collaborator in composing for the screen, Christopher Stracey, who is one-half of the Australian dance-music duo Bag Raiders, and, as a (primarily) electronic musician and producer, has worked with or remixed artists including Ellie Goulding, Maroon 5, Orville Peck, Conan Grey and many others.
They came together through a mutual friend who “set up a playdate” to see how they’d get along in possibly co-scoring the award-winning Netflix limited series “Maid.” That pandemic-era partnership went swimmingly, and they went on to pair up a second time for director Cooper Raiff’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” a top Sundance Film Festival winner before going on to open...

“Dollface” is a comedy series about female solidarity with Jules Wiley (Kat Dennings) playing the protagonist role. Produced by ABC Signature, this show has something surreal about it. It reveals what life is like for Jules, who suffers heartbreak after getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend. The character deals with the challenges of rejoining female social circles and rekindling lost friendships.
The plot takes unusual twists and turns to tell the story of female friendships in the modern world. Unlike most romantic comedies, the protagonist doesn’t seek comfort in a new love interest but aims to mend broken friendships. As a result, the storyline has a fresh take on girl power and sisterhood spiced with a bit of humor.
Film pundits and viewers showered mostly positive reviews upon the show. Some reviewers praised the main cast’s role in making the show a joy to watch. Others felt it...

Andie MacDowell on track to receive first career Emmy nomination thanks to heartbreaking ‘Maid’ role
Andie MacDowell finally has her first chance at an Emmy nomination for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress for her performance as Paula Langley in Netflix’s “Maid.”
The 10-episode series tells of Alex, played by MacDowell’s real-life daughter Margaret Qualley, who leaves an abusive relationship and becomes a maid to make a better life for her and her daughter Maddy. MacDowell plays Alex’s bipolar mother Paula, an artist struggling to make ends meet. She has been strong in films like “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Groundhog Day” and “Ready or Not,” but her supporting performance in “Maid” is one of her finest, allowing her to blend vulnerability, joy and intense emotional rage. As Lucy Mangan says at The Guardian, the role of Paula is “gradually fleshed out and always played and treated with sympathy.” Emmy voters, take notice.

“When I got the call — or the ask at least — to compose for ‘Maid,’ I’m self-aware enough to know where my strengths and weaknesses are, and I knew that I needed a collaborator to help me on this composing journey,” says Este Haim about the opportunity to create the score for the Netflix limited series. This was her first composing gig for film or TV, so she reached out to her friend Tobias Jesso Jr., a Canadian recording artist, who connected her with another musician and first-time TV composer, Australian Chris Stracey. “If Tobias loved Stray, I knew I was going to love Stray.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Haim and Stracey above.
