Lionsgate announced release dates for a few movies today, including Flight Risk, Mel Gibson’s first time in the director’s chair since Hacksaw Ridge. The action thriller, which stars Mark Wahlberg, will be released on October 18th.
Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Jared Rosenberg, Flight Risk finds Wahlberg playing a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.”
Our own Chris Bumbray was able to see a trailer for Flight Risk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month and he teased that Wahlberg is playing “Way against type” in the movie. “He even shaved his head to look like he has a bald pate,” Bumbray wrote. “Looks like a really tight kickass thriller, and Gibson Really makes Walhberg look crazy in this.

Good news for exhibition as Lionsgate is delivering two big releases this fall: The Dave Bautista action pic The Killer’s Game on Sept. 13 and the Mel Gibson directed Mark Wahlberg movie Flight Risk for Oct. 18. Again, we can’t be without film product in a marketplace that’s starving for volume.
Meanwhile the Gerard Butler sequel Den of Thieves: Pantera will hit cinemas on Jan. 10, 2025; that title arriving to Lionsgate through its eOne acquistion.
The JJ Perry directed The Killer’s Game, based on the book by Jay R. Bonansinga and adapted by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, follows a top hitman, Joe Flood (Bautista) who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. He opts to take matters into his own hands – by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella), he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and...

Who has not felt the sting of a missed opportunity, especially when you have come so close to your big break? For O’Shea Jackson Jr., the brush with a galaxy far, far away was definitely a bitter pill to swallow—one that the fandom of both Star Wars and the actor can empathize with.
Rising to fame as an actor in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic film, Straight Outta Compton, Jackson Jr.’s talent has been evident. Earlier this year, moreover, his candidness about the disappointment of losing a coveted role in Ron Howard’s 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story to Donald Glover was as relatable as it was commendable.

Opening up about the intense audition process, Jackson Jr. reflected on his confidence after multiple auditions for the role of Lando Calrissian, only to experience a letdown when Glover was cast.

The sports drama, inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant’s experiences as a kid, has been cancelled after two seasons at the streamer. Series creator Reggie Rock Bythewood shared the news of the cancellation on Instagram Thursday.
“What an amazing adventure. In our two seasons, we have launched careers, disrupted genre, brought forth humanity through our characters, told stories we care deeply about, revolutionized the way to shoot basketball and had fun,” he wrote.
He added: “Apple, while you are not ordering a season three, I made the show I wanted to make. Thank you for that. Cast, writers and crew, you have my gratitude. Walk off the set with Swagger. For our FAMbase, you lifted us in ways we could have never imagined. To the industry, don’t take your foot off the gas. Keep telling our stories.”

Gwyneth Paltrow is sharing her take on the nepotism baby debate.
During an interview with Bustle, published online Wednesday, the Oscar-winning actress and businesswoman, who is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and director-producer Bruce Paltrow, called the term “nepo baby” an “ugly moniker.”
When asked what’s it like for her 19-year-old daughter to navigate her family, Paltrow said, “Now there’s this whole nepo baby culture, and judgment that exists around kids of famous people. She’s really just a student, and she’s been very…she just wants to be a kid and be at school and learn.”
But the Iron Man star went on to note that “there’s nothing wrong with doing or wanting to do what your parents do.” Adding, “Nobody rips on a kid who’s like, ‘I want to be a doctor like my dad and granddad.’ The truth is if you...

People say truth is stranger than fiction, but the story in "Cocaine Bear" the movie is definitely more interesting than the true story behind it. In real life, the bear dubbed Pablo Eskobear ate a bunch of coke that was dumped from a drug smuggling plane and died from an overdose. In the vision of bloody mayhem created by director Elizabeth Banks and writer Jimmy Warden, though, the bear in question went on a drug-fueled murder spree, mauling anyone who got in her way. Even Margo Martindale wasn't safe!
"Cocaine Bear" landed in the zeitgeist earlier this year, taking Twitter by storm before its release, thanks to its wild title and even wilder premise. The movie ultimately grossed over $87 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo). An attention-catching genre mashup with a relatively lean budget and a good theatrical haul should be like studio exec catnip, so where's the "Cocaine Bear" sequel news?...

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. That's right -- it's officially pumpkin spice season, which means we've drawn near to the end of August and have well and truly reached the last third of 2023. But more than reminding us of the fleetingness of life and the unstoppable ravages of time, the beginning of September also ushers in the fall movie season and, of course, another round of streaming service shuffling as various movies and shows get kicked around in a never-ending digital dance.
That's why we're here. For those who tend to rely on these streaming platforms to re-watch their favorites or (hopefully) explore previously unknown corners of cinema and television, well, the end of each month and beginning of the next are easily the busiest times of the year. And for that, it...

Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here, get a copy at This Link) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. And I thought it was a blast to watch. So I welcome a Cocaine Bear 2… and during an interview with Rolling Stone, Banks said she would also welcome it.
When asked about the possibility of working on a sequel, Banks told Rolling Stone, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. When Francie Calfo, then-president of television at Imagine Entertainment, first reached out to Reggie Rock Bythewood to gauge his interest in the sports drama that would become Swagger, he wasn’t immediately on board.
“There was something really interesting happening during that time,” recalls Bythewood, the creator, writer, director and executive producer of the Apple TV+ series. “In that same week, two other people hit me about basketball projects. I was like, ‘What is in the air?’
Still, Bythewood was somewhat intrigued by the idea of a TV show loosely inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant’s youth basketball days. So, he took a 45-minute flight from Los Angeles to Oakland, California — where Durant was playing for the Golden State Warriors at the time — and met with the 6’10″ pro baller, who’s also an executive producer of the series. Show business is often a family affair.
We previously explored Hollywood’s acting dynasties and now shine the spotlight on famous fathers and their lookalike sons. These sons not only take after their famous fathers in appearance, but also in profession.
Some, like “Schitt’s Creeks'” Eugene Levy and Dan Levy and “After Earth’s” Will and Jaden Smith, have played actual fathers and sons on screen. The resemblance between O’Shea Jackson Jr. and his father O’Shea Jackson aka Ice Cube, is so close that the younger Jackson portrayed his father in “Straight Outta Compton.”
From the Eastwoods to the Estevezes, check out these father-son lookalike duos.

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.

“I was a genre kid, I was a little goth kid. I was all about sci-fi and fantasy and this was always the pinnacle of everything,” reveals director/producer Deborah Chow about what leading the creative team behind “Obi-Wan Kenobi” meant to her. For our recent webchat she adds, “it definitely felt surreal in moments, for sure. I remember the very first time we were doing a camera test, it wasn’t even the proper costume. But, you know he was in something approximating it, and he walked out, and it was just like, ‘oh, my God, it’s Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and he just sort of fell so seamlessly back into the character,” she says. “They’re so iconic that it is a little crazy to have them standing in front of you. It’s something I’ve never experienced, where you’re working with actors in these huge roles...

Netflix pulled off a three-peat with the strong debut of “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die,” the new movie that serves as the coda to the popular British historical fiction TV series, topping Whip Media’s movie ranker, which looks at the most-streamed movies in the U.S. over the past weekend, using viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
If you’re unfamiliar, “The Last Kingdom” series followed the uneasy and often violent relationship between the Anglo-Saxons and Viking invaders in ninth-century England. “Seven Kings Must Die” picks up where the series left off, with rival clans and invaders battling for the crown following the death of King Edward. The film, which is set to be the final chapter in “The Last Kingdom” saga, premiered on Netflix last Friday.

Get in line, because Cocaine Bear has made its way to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital following a successful theatrical run. The “Maximum Rampage Edition” features several featurettes, including a fun audio commentary by director/producer Elizabeth Banks and producer (and Banks’ husband) Max Handelman.
Here are eight things I learned from the Cocaine Bear commentary…
1. The film opens with a Wet Hot American Summer reference.
Cocaine Bear opens to the tune of Jefferson Starship’s “Jane,” which many will recognize as the theme song to Wet Hot American Summer, the film in which Banks got her start. She explains:
“This song straight up is an homage to Wet Hot American Summer. Anybody who knows my work knows Wet Hot American Summer was technically my first movie as Elizabeth Banks. That’s my SAG card, got it on that movie. This is the opening song to Wet Hot American Summer, and I sent David Wain,...
