Israeli artist Noga Erez appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night to perform “Views,” a song off her latest album Kids.
In a set-up reminiscent of NPR’s Tiny Desk at-home series during the pandemic, Erez and her band performed together in a tiny room, surrounded by lush house plants and succulents. (The set comes courtesy of the Israeli virtual concert series The Succulent Sessions, for which Erez is a featured performer.) Joined by her partner and fellow Israeli musician Rousso, Erez took shots at fake people buying “views” on social media — “People buy views,...

Frank Perry’s version of the shootout at the O.K. Corral shapes up as a fine western and an even better drama — the revisionist angle is supported by an excellent script and thoughtful, challenging characterizations. Tombstone’s frontier folk are dirty, vulgar and corrupt, but Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway generate a rough-hewn romantic harmony. Harris Yulin’s Wyatt Earp is a revelation as well — if this were modern times Earp would get a lock on city hall politics and go into the land development racket. The beautifully filmed movie looks terrific on disc. Alex Cox delivers a solid audio commentary as well.

Six decades into his career, Stacy Keach is finally receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 78-year-old actor muscled into notoriety playing everyone from Hamlet to Hemingway to Mike Hammer. When the New York Times spotted the then-27-year-old up-and-comer in “Henry IV,” it gushed that his “superb” Falstaff was “so freshly observed that it is almost a new character.”
In the late 1960s, Keach was hailed as America’s Laurence Olivier — right when the country decided it didn’t need one. His agent, the powerhouse Sue Mengers, gave him the truth: “Come out of your ivory tower. Forget the classics. Get to Hollywood.”
He obeyed, and today Keach is best-known for playing heavyweights who tend to kill and be killed on film and TV, where the camera can closely observe his intimidating build, defining harelip and what Elia Kazan called “a sense of violence behind the eyes that’s not housebroken.

On Monday, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” set a new record, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 for 17 weeks. To achieve this, the single kept six rival pop stars out of the top spot, garnered five remixes (don’t forget Cupcakke’s), lasted for more than four months, nearly spanned three Democratic debates, enjoyed two times as many chart points as the poor suckers in the Number Two position, and spawned one massive debate about the state of country music. (“Old Town Road” has also been Number One on Rolling Stone...

See Offred.
Offred, and all the women of Hulu’s excellent adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, are royally — and often literally — screwed.
See Offred resist. Resist, Offred, resist!
The new drama, based on Margaret Atwood’s chilling novel, introduces its protagonist and starts to explain out how she went from working wife and mom in a world resembling ours to downtrodden sex slave in a society run by a totalitarian patriarchy. (Spoiler alert: The transformation is quick and chilling.)
But even though life is bleak for Offred and her sistren, there’s a spark of revolution glowing under those white winged veils.

Short of the DayAn animated fable.
The best stories are elliptical, their ends are new beginnings. This is certainly true of today’s Short selection, End of the Road, an animated film from Bri Meyer in which a motorist traveling through the desert picks up another at the side of the road at the scene of a very bad car accident. The traveler doesn’t seem hurt, but as he won’t speak, it’s tough to tell. Until it isn’t.
Meyer facilitated every single aspect of this film herself, from the writing to the animation to the editing, and as such it’s a very aesthetically cohesive short with every element informing the others. It’s a simple story with a heady conclusion and in its brevity there’s a chilling elegance that make End of the Road far more resonant than its runtime might suggest.

Days of Our Lives isn’t hesitating to bring the shock value for the weekend. It looks like Deimos has done precisely what we thought he’d do, and he’s gone right off the deep end without any hope of getting his act together. He’s a bad guy through and through, and he’s going to cause some serious drama and then he’s going to become the drama. He’s got Chad and Gabi at his mercy, starving to death slowly but surely. There’s very little hope either of them will live at this moment, and Deimos doesn’t seem to care in the least.

We've come to the end of yet another Super Bowl. There were some hot sad faces, some gaffes, some singing, some brilliantly played financial moves, and some sports. James Corden had the occasion to close out CBS's big night on The Late Late Show, and he brought out some of the best closers in the romance business: Boyz II Men. They sing-recap all the sports that happened last night, most appropriately, to "End of the Road," your favorite graduation song since 1991. Long live the '90s.

Dorothy Tristan wrote and stars in the latest film from Academy Award® nominated director John Hancock,"The Looking Glass," set to open in New York at the Cinema Village, and in Los Angeles at the Fine Arts on October 23, 2015.
“I was very moved by the film. Dorothy gives an extremely touching performance, one that is definitely worthy of an Academy Award nomination,” said film critic Kathleen Carroll.
The official synopsis reads: "After losing her mother, troubled 13-year-old Julie must go to Indiana to live with her grandmother, Karen. Karen, a former star of stage and screen, now facing the end of her life, wants desperately to connect with her granddaughter in a meaningful way and pass on all she knows before it's too late. But the two of them—each stubborn in her own way—butt heads at every turn. Soon, Karen makes a remarkable discovery: Julie’s powerful, unique singing voice. Will the sudden discovery of Julie’s talent be enough to bring the two together and allow Karen to pass on her legacy? This beautifully shot film shows a tenderness in its treatment of family matters such as depression and low self-esteem. In watching the story unfold, the watcher is touched at the beauty and sadness of the rebellious young girl. Our hopes for her finding herself and allowing her voice to be shared with the world engages as the movie unfolds. This is the sort of film families with pre-teen and teen girls and boys would enjoy together. Then one talks of 'family entertainment,' this is the film that fits for a pleasurable movie day"
Married for forty years, "The Looking Glass" finds Dorothy Tristan and John Hancock collaborating for the seventh time. Since 1994, when their house was destroyed in the Malibu fire, they’ve been living and working in La Porte County, Indiana, and turning that little corner of the Midwest into a filmmaking hub.
Dorothy appeared in the director's “California Dreaming” and wrote “Steal the Sky,” “Weeds,” “A Piece of Eden” and “Suspended Animation.” She also did the final polish on Hancock's Christmas classic, “Prancer.” Tristan began her acting career in theatre, playing Charlotte Corday in the national touring production of “Marat/Sade.” She was Helena in “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Lady Macduff in “Macbeth” at Stratford, Connecticut. She played Blanche Dubois opposite Jon Voight in “Streetcar Named Desire.” She had leading or supporting roles in a number of major motion pictures including “Klute,” “Man on a Swing,” and Aram Avakian’s “End of the Road” with James Earl Jones and Stacy Keach.
Hancock’s feature film credits include “Bang The Drum Slowly,” “California Dreaming,” “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death,” “Baby Blue Marine,” “Weeds,’ and the Christmas classic “Prancer,” starring Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman, Abe Vigoda and Rebecca Harrell, which he shot "The Looking Glass" on his family’s fruit farm in Laporte County. His current production, , brings him home again, physically and emotionally. He says he “tried to catch the sense of returning to this place where you grew up, and falling in love with what you were not truly able to see before.
The story hits close to home for Hancock and Tristan. “Dorothy and I have reached a point in our lives where we’ve thought a lot about what we’ve accomplished, and what kind of legacy we hope to leave behind once we’re no longer here,” says Hancock, 76.
“You always hope you’ve had some type of impact on people, that what you did with your life meant something to people. That’s what this story is about: reaching out to those closest to you and imparting on them all your knowledge, all your life lessons so a part of you lives on.
“You’re preparing the next generation for greatness. That’s true not just for the characters in the film, but for Dorothy and me, that maybe we can inspire a new generation of filmmakers to create movies that mean something to people.”...

We'd waited months, debated Twitter fouls and argued over the too-much-too-soon of it all — finally, last week, we got a taste of what a Trevor Noah-led Daily Show would actually be like. The South African comedian had the tall task of replacing Jon Stewart, who over a decade ago turned the politically savvy late-night show into a nightly ritual for many Americans (and more recently, a reliable source for "so-and-so destroys such-and-such" articles on the Internet). The first few nights mostly inspired a lot "he seems unflappable" comments — and...

John Huston sets the bar for director-driven quality filmmaking of the early 1970s. Stacy Keach is a punchy boxing bum who teams up with the ambitious newcomer Jeff Bridges; the glowing discovery is the amazing Susan Tyrell, film history's most convincingly caustic floozy-alcoholic, bar none. Her voice can peel paint, but we love her dearly. Justin Bieber may be that bratty 21-year-old you love to hate, but, as his carpool karaoke with James Corden demonstrated, he can be quite the charmer if you look past his antics. He's also such a Boyz II Men stan. Back in 2011, he somehow convinced the R&B OGs to appear on his holiday album, featured on the song "Fa La La" (they even performed it on Dancing With the Stars). It didn't entirely work, but that was just a taste of the Biebs' love affair with Boyz II Men. With Corden, he sang "End of the Road," and over the weekend, he did an impromptu jazz cover of "I'll Make Love to You" at the W Hotel in Hollywood. Full band and everything! There's also some obligatory floor-humping, in case you weren't already swooning (or cringing, depending on your Biebs tolerance). Bring on the Boyz II Men album.

Remember the summer of 2009 and FX’s announcement of a 13-episode order for Lawman, based on the work of the late, great crime fiction author Elmore Leonard? My First R-rated Movie Or…
How I Became The 007 Of Covert Forbidden Film Viewing
By Alex Simon
For those of us who grew up in the suburbs in the pre-home video, pre-cable TV and pre-Netflix coupons 1970s and early ‘80s, there were few dangerous pleasures as heady as sneaking into an R-rated movie at the local multiplex. The multiplex cinema was a ‘70s phenomenon that made regulating children’s viewing habits infinitely more difficult than the old days of stand-alone, single screen theaters. Ironically, the new freedom that filmmakers enjoyed with the advent of the MPAA rating system in late 1968 was almost in perfect synch with the rise of multi-screen cinemas. Some things do happen for a reason.

Arrow Video has announced the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Mario Bava’s cult classic Rabid Dogs, which arrives in the UK on 27th October. This new deluxe release will include both Rabid Dogs, Bava’s original version posthumously completed from his notes, and Kidnapped, the re-edited, re-dubbed and re-scored version, supervised by Bava’s son and assistant director Lamberto Bava, and producer Alfredo Leone. Mario Bava’s reputation as a filmmaker rests chiefly on his contribution to horror, particularly his baroque and beautiful Gothic chillers of the 1960s. All the more surprising that in the mid-1970s he should turn to the crime genre and create Cani arrabbiati (aka Rabid Dogs), an abrasive kidnap psychodrama that ranks alongside anything done by the better-known ‘tough guy’ directors of the day. Together with both versions of the film, this new disc will also feature a newly translated English subtitled track,...

Often called “The Prince of Darkness” for his tendency to artfully cloak onscreen characters in ominous shadows, cinematographer Gordon Willis was the closest thing Hollywood had to a Rembrandt. His playful visual style, daring use of chiaroscuro, and seemingly effortless ability to conjure a mood of unsettling paranoia made him the ideal Director of Photography for the 1970s — a glorious filmmaking decade when Technicolor artifice was swept aside for New Hollywood naturalism.

One of Hollywood's most celebrated and influential cinematographers has died. Gordon Willis was 82. Suzanne Berestecky of the Chapman Cole & Gleason funeral home in Falmouth, Mass., confirmed Monday that he died and that the home is handling arrangements. Details on Willis's death were not immediately available. Willis was nicknamed The Prince of Darkness for his subtle but indelible touch on such definitive 1970s releases as The Godfather, 'Annie Hall and All the President's Men. He retired after the 1997 movie The Devil's Own. Through much of the 1970s, Willis was the cameraman whom some of Hollywood's top directors relied on during one of filmmaking's greatest eras.

Actors’ behind-the-camera debuts are rarely great. There’s generally a safeness to those movies, where it feels more like an actor testing the waters than having a story they need to tell. A big exception to that trend: George Clooney. Clooney took a major chance on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Sure, he had a script written by Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation), but he made bold choices as a filmmaker. From the film’s complex style, the timeline they have to show in two hours, and the tonally tricky humor, Clooney’s first directorial outing was an ambitious introduction. Since then he’s tried his hand at varying material, constantly pushing himself as a filmmaker. Nothing against his films since 2002, including the overlooked Leatherheads, but Confessions of a Dangerous Mind remains his best picture. This is a film where big choices were made, and every single one of them hit their mark. It...

It's official: Blake Shelton will not win this season of The Voice. His last man standing, Cole Vosbury, fell shy of making the top three, getting the boot alongside James Wolpert (the first member of Team Adam Levine to go).
Still, Blake went out on a high note, with three out of four of the guest performers being former mentees.

We're one week away from the season finale of The Voice and there's still no clear winner. They seem to want us to think it's Tessanne Chin, but it could just as easily be Will Champlin. Either way, it's going to be a good year for coach Adam Levine, as two of his three teammates will almost certainly be among the top three in the finals.

The latest act to be eliminated from The X Factor has been revealed.
Rough Copy exited the show following a sing-off with Luke Friend. The result means that Luke, Sam Bailey and Nicholas McDonald will contest next week's live final at London's Wembley Arena.
Luke took on 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Keane in the sing-off, while Rough Copy performed a rendition of Boyz II Men's 'End Of The Road'.
Gary Barlow remarked that both acts had given below par performances in the sing-off but opted to stand by his act Rough Copy. Louis Walsh also stood by Luke and voted to send him into the final.
Nicole Scherzinger told Luke that he is a "diamond in the rough" but voted in favour of Rough Copy. An emotional Sharon Osbourne decided to take the decision to Deadlock.

Might there finally be a clear frontrunner on this season of The Voice? Because Cole Vosbury has had a pretty solid showing on the iTunes songs chart every week since viewer voting began (this week he's virtually neck and neck with Tessanne Chin, who's at the head of the class for the very first time). At the very least, he is the dark horse to keep an eye on – especially because he hails from three-time winner Blake Shelton's team. (Plus, there's the whole Duck Dynasty vibe he gives off with that broom-like beard.

I’m a huge Mario Bava fan. For those of you that have been following the site and the podcast, you already know this. While he is growing to be a bit more appreciated, I still find him to be the best of the Italian genre directors. Yes, even above Dario Argento & Lucio Fulci. What Argento & Fulci provide are visual assaults courtesy of color, violence and gore. Bava, on the other hand, can do those things but he has coherent stories in his films. Look, I like Fulci & Argento but there is no question that I am a Bava fan. Arrow Video was first out of the gate to release some Bava on Blu-Ray with Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve and other titles) and Kino has been releasing Bava’s films Stateside.

For its second edition, the Oak Cliff Film Festival in Dallas, Texas (which produced an amazing bumper video), has added some rarely-seen older films to a lineup built around local premieres of Joe Swanberg's Drinking Buddies and Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek. The repertory screenings, a 35mm specialty of the Texas Theatre, sound fantastic. Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller looks absolutely splendid on 35mm -- I saw it a few years ago in Los Angeles and it was revelatory on the big screen -- and this screening will be hosted by muti-talented filmmaker David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints), with Keith Carradine in attendance. Sunderland have sacked manager Martin O’Neill following this afternoon’s defeat to Manchester United and recent slump in form.
