East of Eden (1955)
In East of Eden (1955), James Dean, as Cal, reads selections from Psalm 32 at his Father's insistence. He's technically following instructions, yet refusing to read the passage in the way that he is expected to, by reading the verse numbers out loud that are not normally verbalized. When he reads verse 7, he not only says the number 7 out loud to annoy his Father, but he goes on to read the verse that speaks of God as a protective "hiding place" for his followers when they are in trouble. Years later, East of Eden's star Julie Harris would make The Hiding Place (1975) which is named after this very passage. Corrie Ten Boom's autobiographical work on which the film is based, was named after Psalm 32:7 in the Bible. The film is about God's protection for Ten Boom from the Nazis during the Holocaust.
