Halloween is old news, now the world is focusing on Christmas and it's time for you to plan your holiday season accordingly with ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas schedule. Things kick off on December 1 (naturally) and go all the way through December 25 (again, implied by the 25 Days of Christmas name). As part of the programming block, ABC Family will debut the network premiere of remastered versions of classic Jim Henson Christmas specials The Bells of Fraggle Rock and Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. There's also a Shadowhunters preview on tap and a Toy Story marathon. In case you missed it, ABC Family is changing its name to Freeform in January 2016, so get ready for Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas...

This weekend I finally got to introduce my family to Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. It was such a special moment that I had to share the news on Facebook. It got many likes. People love that little Jim Henson film. Someday I'll try to do the same thing with Santa Claus: The Movie. It won't be nearly as enjoyed. It won't receive any Facebook likes. Nobody, and I mean nobody, loves that almost forgotten box office bomb. Except me. I know it's not very good, and my love for it is basic nostalgia for that time of my youth when I liked a number of movies that were very unpopular (others from the era being Howard the Duck, Supergirl -- from the same director as Santa Claus, Jeannot Szwarc -- and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen) that today I accept as merely...

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
This installment comes from David Gil, Marketing Manager for the Violet Crown Cinema:
There are a number of films that I enjoy re-watching when the holiday season rolls around. I never really thought about which ones were my favorite until I was asked to pick one to write about. Immediately I thought of films like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, which may top the list though Love Actually (I’m not ashamed to admit it) is gaining momentum with each passing year. Yet, as I sit down to write this, there seems to be one title that I keep going back to: Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas.
Jim Henson adapted the Russell [and Lillian --ed.] Hoban book into a television special the year I was born, which may...

It's December 19. Our enthusiasm for real life things is waning, and our enthusiasm for holiday whimsy is approaching peak levels. Perhaps you feel the same way! To that end, we have collected some of the great moments in the Muppet Christmas canon, mostly musical but some prose. As Muppet Christmas Carol reminds us, "'tis the season to be jolly and joyous." Or just to gorge yourself on the endless charm and emotional poignancy of the Muppets."Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Rowlf and John Denver, John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together If that doesn't make your heart ache, you are made of stone. "Bless Us All," Muppet Christmas Carol Anything with Robin gets bonus points. "Christmas Is Coming," John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together Maracas! "Need a Little Christmas," A Muppet Family Christmas Watch out for the icy patch. "When the River Meets the Sea,...

Welcome to Their Holiday Favorites, a series in which members of the Austin film community tell us about movies they enjoy watching during the holiday season. Austin filmmaker/producer David Hartstein (Along Came Kinky, Where Soldiers Come From) has been traveling out of the country recently to work on his Untitled Israeli Football Documentary, but was able to take a minute to tell us about a certain Christmas movie he can't miss.
I'm Jewish and there are no Hanukkah movies worth your time. So until Mel Gibson's Judah Maccabee project sees the light of day and despite marrying a Lutheran last year, I still feel like a Christmas movie interloper. But sure, like anyone else I do have a go-to list of Christmas movies that put me in the holiday spirit: It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, Die Hard, Eyes Wide Shut...

On Saturday, Alamo Kids Club is playing Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas on Saturday. It's free, but first come first seated so get there early.
Tuesday night is the night of Something For Everyone Who Likes Watching Movies. Austin Public Library's Polish Film Series is showing Borys Lankosz' The Reverse (Rewers) at the Howson Branch, and over at Twin Oaks Branch you can see Kung Fu Panda 2 (why yes that is a 2011 title). You can find out more about these films on the Apl website. Austin Film Society members (and those who are lucky enough to get tickets for the remaining seats) can see Two for the Road starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney.
Movies We've Seen:
Project Nim -- Afs Selects returns with an encore limited engagement of James Marsh's Oscar-shortlisted documentary about a chimpanzee raised as a human. I found the occasional re-enactments melodramatic and diminishing.

We all have favorite Christmas movies that we watch every year. For me, "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" is the most necessary. And I'll watch bits of "A Christmas Story" and "Scrooged" if they're on TV (and both are on TV a lot this time of year). Thanks to the holidays, there are a number of films we've all seen too many times. Like "Elf." Do we really need to have seen that more than we've seen any other Will Ferrell movie? But because it's a Christmas movie it gets played and seen every year at this time. And probably only…...

While some of us pansies hold on to cute family fare like Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas and Santa Claus: The Movie (what?) as our favorite holiday films from youth, the cool kids always remind me that the best Christmas films of the '80s are action flicks like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. So why isn't Hollywood still making shit like that? Probably because, just as Mom told me would happen, the nerds run things now (plus, you didn't see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in the theater, asshole). And so instead we get stuff like Zemeckis' Christmas Carol, which is both too family friendly and too technology-focused to be cool in any way.
But maybe the tides will change in a couple years if Zemeckis' next Christmas craptacular, the uglimated version of The Nutcracker that Dustin told us about last month, is forced to go up against another adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's classic story.

Time for some full disclosure. While I like to consider myself a reasonably well-read, serious guy, I enjoy all sorts of entertainment. I'm a Trekker. Growing up, I loved Sesame Street, the Muppets, Zoom, and The Electric Company. And though I was probably way too old at the time -- I was in college -- and shouldn't admit this, I was a huge fan of Fraggle Rock. The show, created by Muppet master Jim Henson, was actually one of HBO's earliest original series, and it was just brilliant. From the opening lyrics of the theme song -- "Dance your cares away/Worries for another day/Let the music play/Down at Fraggle Rock" -- to the creatures, and from the vibrant visuals to the charming/serious lessons taught each episode, Fraggle Rock was a treat. Stories centered on the Fraggles, a group of cave-dwelling, free-spirited humanoid creatures, and the other...
