Quotes
-
Javert : Why did you let me go?
Jean Valjean : I had no choice.
Javert : Choice?
Jean Valjean : Once, many years ago, a remarkable man bought my soul. He removed from it all evil thoughts and gave it to God.
-
Javert : [after Valjean's second attempt to escape Toulon] It is the decision of the Military Tribunal that ten years be added to your sentence. I am requested by law to inquire if you have anything to say, um, for yourself.
Jean Valjean : [softly] Some day...
Javert : Speak up!
Jean Valjean : [clearing his throat] Some day, I'll kill you.
[the guards seize him]
Javert : Six months in the hole for disrespect.
[Valjean spits at him in disgust]
Javert : Take him away.
-
Jean Valjean : [Sister Simplice has told her first lie in order to save Valjean] God bless you, sister.
Sister Simplice : I lied!
Jean Valjean : Then may this falsehood be placed to your credit in paradise.
-
Gillenormand : I've been a fool.
Jean Valjean : Oh sir, we're all fools for most of our lives. It's unavoidable.
-
Cosette (adult) : Why do the police want to arrest them?
Jean Valjean : Because they're revolutionary - they want to destroy the monarchy.
Cosette (adult) : Is the monarchy bad?
Jean Valjean : Well, it doesn't listen to the poor; it never has. But then, it commands the French Army. To fight it is useless.
Cosette (adult) : Will he - will they come back to the park?
Jean Valjean : I doubt if anything will stop them until they're killed.
-
Javert : Well, go on. Take your revenge. I am waiting.
[Valjean draws a knife]
Javert : Oh, a knife. Of course, that suits a cutthroat better.
Jean Valjean : Turn around!
[Javert does so, and Valjean cuts his restraints]
Jean Valjean : You're free. Begone.
Javert : You madden me. I would sooner be killed!
Jean Valjean : I said begone!
-
Jean Valjean : I knew nothing of what you told me.
[handing her a silver franc]
Jean Valjean : Here. This is to help with your child.
Fantine : You know nothing of me. I am a stranger to you.
Jean Valjean : It was only a stranger who held out a hand to me once. Let me know if you have any more trouble.
