One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.
In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

The year was 1985 when Super Mario Bros. took the Nintendo Entertainment System by storm; Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes debuted in newspapers, and two unlikely friends named Marty McFly and Emmett Lathrop Brown piloted cinema’s most iconic time machine to a year when Panama hats and kitten heels were all the rage, 1955.
Fiercely protected at a level akin to Ghostbusters and Star Wars by millennials worldwide, Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future sits enthroned at Nostalgia Mountain’s top. The original film has spawned two sequels, a cartoon series, video game adaptations, a Broadway musical, and more. But how does it hold up by today’s standards? Strap on your seatbelt, and prepare yourselves to see some serious shit because this is Back to the Future Revisited.
In 1977, Robert Zemeckis did the unthinkable. He bulldozed into Amblin Entertainment without an appointment, heading straight for Steven Spielberg’s office.

Update: In addition to being available on Hulu, the classic Bruce WIllis/ Cybill Shepherd series, Moonlighting, is now coming to digital retailers like iTunes and more. So if you want to own a digital copy of the show, now’s your chance. One caveat: no news on whether the show will be available in Canada, with it still absent from Disney Star here north of the border, making it seem like the music rights are keeping the show from being more widely available.
Original Post: Do bears bear? Do bees be? Does a Hulu subscription sound enticing now that Moonlighting is finally coming to the streaming platform? That’s right, you detectives of romance! All 67 episodes of the classic comedy series starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd will be available to stream on the service beginning on October 10, 2023.
How does Hulu plan to sweeten the pot for this fantastic news?...

We want movies to move us. We want them to soothe us, and carry us through bad times; we want them to make us laugh, make us feel connected to others, and show us beauty and splendor we've never seen before. And, sometimes, we want movies to truly, deeply disturb us.
Never mind why; maybe we're numb and want to be rattled into feeling, maybe we're feeling too much and want to channel it all somewhere, or maybe we just want to believe the world is still capable of bowling us over despite of our defenses. Whatever the case, we all sometimes take to a movie specifically because of one particular moment in it that makes us feel horrible.
Conversely, we sometimes don't want movies to disturb us, and yet they do — when we're least expecting them to, or when we're making an earnest effort to meet them halfway, they...

Eddie Marks, a member of the costume department on such films as The Breakfast Club, The Witches of Eastwick and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the president of the Western Costume Company since 1992, has died. He was 76.
Marks died Monday of natural causes during a visit to Prague, a spokesman for the company told The Hollywood Reporter.
Marks joined Western Costume in 1989 as a vice president and became president three years later. He helped steer the company from a cramped Melrose Avenue warehouse near the Paramount lot to a hangar-sized building on Vanowen Street in North Hollywood in 1990.
Western Costume was founded sometime between 1912 and 1915 and has been among the world’s largest suppliers of costumes ever since. “What makes us stand out from our competitors is that, over the last 30 years, I’ve bought 11 companies that were costume rental companies,” Marks told THR in a 2019 profile of Western Costume.

For many of us, high school was a time that we spent overly invested in our own adolescent lives and juvenile misadventures that (at the time) seemed to be the most mature and important thing in the world. And in some cases, the witty antics and perverted scheming of Jim Levinstein and his friends hit the nail right on the head- and especially for those of us who were going through our formative years in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
And as most movie nerds do, I used to find myself feeling seen and heard by the American Pie movies in that I related to being a suburban teenager whose attention was constantly shifting between dating way out of my league, and the constant desire to make the leap from a hormonal teenager to a grown up with everything under control. With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.
Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:
Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

While Peter Farrelly was off winning Oscars for “Green Book,” younger brother Bobby has been largely absent from feature directing. It’s been nearly a decade since the siblings shared credit — the last time being 2014’s “Dumb and Dumber To.” Now, rather than competing with Peter at the respectability game, Bobby sticks to what he knows with “Champions,” in which Woody Harrelson plays a minor-league basketball coach court-ordered to assist a Special Olympics team for 90 days — just long enough to take the team from bumbling incompetents to national finalists.
There are zero surprises in “Champions,” unless you count the not-inconsiderable shock that such a movie exists at all. A remake of 2018 Spanish box office sensation “Campeones,” this awkward (if presumably well-intentioned) comedy might have felt enlightened 25 years ago — back when “Forrest Gump” was an Oscar favorite — but today makes for a patronizing portrayal of people with intellectual disabilities. Orson Welles was just 26 when he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in "Citizen Kane." The 1941 film revolutionized the young industry. It boldly broke from the traditional linear storytelling pattern with a non-linear narrative told from several perspectives. Welles and cinematographer Gregg Toland introduced new cinematography techniques still used in modern filmmaking. Welles perfected the use of the montage, telling the complex life story of protagonist Charles Foster Kane in just under two hours. Welles broke established cinematic rules beginning with the film's opening moments.
The character Charles Foster Kane is loosely based on media magnate and yellow journalism originator William Randolph Hearst. But "Citizen Kane" might also have been a prophetic story of Orson Welles' own life. After multiple marriages, reclusive periods in his life, and struggles with weight as he aged left many to draw comparisons to his own creation, Charles Foster Kane.

Sometimes it's almost hard to recall that the late Paul Walker had a career outside of the "Fast & Furious" films. Before he became a cornerstone of one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood history, Walker was cutting his teeth the way any young, ludicrously handsome actor just breaking into the movie business does: in teen movies like "She's All That" and "Varsity Blues."
It was actually in "Varsity Blues" where a lot of people first really got to know Walker as an actor, especially since he was playing something of an antithesis of the stereotypical blonde haired, blue-eyed, All-American kid who happens to be a star high school quarterback in Texas. Usually, the pretty boy quarterbacks are played as total jerks, but in "Varsity Blues," Walker's character, Lance Harbor, is actually a nice guy who sees a promising playing career cut short due to a catastrophic injury. There's not a lot worth remembering about "Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise," a sequel we're guessing a big chunk of people have either forgotten existed or tried to block from their memories. It was a moderate success, bringing in just over triple its 10 million production budget, so audiences were happy enough with it, but it was... not well-received by the critics. Hardly surprising, all things considered. We're not exactly talking about Oscar-bait here.
But believe it or not, the film had a lasting impact in at least one way -- and we don't mean the baffling number of additional sequels or the rumored reboot. No, we're talking about the fact that, somehow, "Revenge of the Nerds II" influenced an all-time great TV series that couldn't be further from the guys at Lambda Lambda Lambda getting into assorted debauchery on spring break: "The West Wing."

Revenge of the Nerds has long been a highly referenced and loved 80s comedy film about bullied nerds in college as they enact their revenge in the most nerd ways possible to stay true to what makes the bullies hate them while also taking them down. Although the second half of the Revenge of the Nerds film series premiered on television instead of being theatrical events like the first two films in the series, the series never took a brutal hit due to poor sales or similar issues. Still, in recent years the film has been criticized for its use

Film projects fall apart all the time in Hollywood, but it's rare for a movie to get within a month or so of production and abruptly get canned.
This, however, is what happened to "Dallas Sting," which was to be an uplifting account of the first U.S. soccer team, male or female, to win an international tournament. Matthew McConaughey and Kaitlyn Dever were set to star in the film, and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" director Kari Skogland was working from a screenplay by the "Glow" writing duo of Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. On paper, this sounded like a terrifically entertaining sports flick. So why did it get shut down six weeks prior to the start of principal photography?

TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde rates all the Pixar animation studio’s features:
24. Cars 2 (2011) “They should let people see the movie for free,” one pundit opined, “since Disney will make all their money back on the bedsheets.” Some of Pixar’s best movies are sequels, but this follow-up to an already inferior studio entry seemed like nothing but a craven bid for more merchandising money. The results were good for shareholders but middling for moviegoers.
23. Cars (2006) Never underestimate little boys and their love for automobiles. This brightly colored but dramatically flat tale is most enjoyed by a) male moviegoers who b) saw it before they turned 10 and c) have no idea that it tells virtually the same story as the Michael J. Fox comedy “Doc Hollywood.”
22. Cars 3 (2017) It’s a movie about middle age and the fear of obsolescence — you know, for kids! While Lightning (Owen Wilson...

What’s really amusing about hearing that ‘this movie couldn’t be made today’ when talking about movies from decades before is that the movies of today really aren’t any better. It sounds like a weak argument, doesn’t it? Plenty of people want to say how The Goonies, Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, and many upon many other similar movies couldn’t be made. Why? Because they offend people. Why do they offend people? Oh, that’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? There are so many things that offend people today that trying to pin them all down is kind of tough, especially

Safier Entertainment, PhilaDreams Films and Cult Cinema LLC have announced that Scream Bloody Murder – starring Scout Taylor-Compton, Robert Lasardo, James Duval, Vernon Wells, Kelly Reiter, and Lauren Francesca – will start filming May 2021.
Scream Bloody Murder will be the first feature film from director, Shawn C. Phillips – aka YouTuber and actor Coolduder. Rounding out the great talent behind this production is executive producer, Will Collazo Jr.; editor/producer Navid Sanati; co-producer Julie Anne Prescott; and additional casting by Clapit. Says Phillips:
Its going to be a love letter to 90s slasher films in the style of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movie will also have elements of films like Mean Girls as well as Revenge of the Nerds. So it will have some humor mixed in as well to the film.

Following their WGA nomination for their work on Judas and the Black Messiah, comedians and writing duo the Lucas Brothers seem to have found their next project close to home. The siblings will write and star in a semi-autobiographical comedy about their lives as identical twins in Newark, New Jersey which will be produced by Judd Apatow through his Apatow Productions banner for Universal. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel are set to co-write.
The Lucas Brothers’ film with Apatow is the latest in a series of projects announced amidst much critical acclaim as writers (story by) on the acclaimed Warner Bros film Judas and the Black Messiah. The guys have been nominated for a 2021 WGA Award for “Best Original Screenplay” for the film, a drama about the assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton, which premiered in theaters and on HBO Max February 12. Judd Apatow and brothers Kenny and Keith Lucas are teaming on a new comedy for Universal Pictures. The semi-autobiographical film will center on the siblings’ lives as identical twins growing up in New Jersey.
The Lucas brothers are writing and starring in the film, with Apatow set to produce. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (“The Grinder”) will co-write the still-untitled movie.
Apatow’s track record for developing semi-autobiographical comedies certainly speaks for itself. His latest directorial effort was “The King of Staten Island,” a well-reviewed movie based on the life of “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson. He’s produced “The Big Sick,” about the real-life romance between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, writer Emily V. Gordon. And the TV shows “Girls” and “Crashing,” both of which Apatow executive produced, were loosely inspired by the series creators Lena Dunham and Pete Holmes, respectively.

The first of the month is typically when the variety of streaming services on offer bolster their respective libraries with a mixture of original and pre-existing content, freshening things up for subscribers in the process. January 1st also happens to be the first day of 2021, though, so people might be expecting a little more than just a handful of new additions, and HBO Max are stepping up to the plate in a big way.
Of course, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to entice millions to sign up for Warner Bros.’ platform, especially when the entire slate of theatrical releases are also heading to the streaming site on the same day that they hit the big screen. And keen to capitalize on the inevitable influx of new customers, HBO Max is adding a massive amount of film and television titles on January 1st, with the onslaught set to continue over the next 30 days.

As things stand, Tom Holland has currently played Spider-Man the same number of times as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield combined, with the currently shooting third installment marking the young actor’s sixth outing under the costume. Of course, that’s all set to change quite soon, though, as the two previous incumbents of the spandex are as good as confirmed to return in the threequel, adding another notch each onto their respective Spider-belts.

Seth MacFarlane will produce a reboot of the 1984 nerds vs. jocks comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” that will star and be written by comedians Kenny and Keith Lucas aka The Lucas Brothers, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The project is currently in development at 20th Century Studios, with MacFarlane producing with Erica Huggins for his company Fuzzy Door Productions. The Lucas Brothers will co-write the script with Alex Reubens, who has written for both “Key & Peele” and “Rick & Morty.”

Seth MacFarlane is reviving the age old rivalry between jocks and nerds. The comedic actor is developing a reboot of the seminal ’80s comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” at 20th Century Studios.
Keith and Kenny Lucas, identical twin brothers best known for their scene-stealing roles in “22 Jump Street,” are set to write and star in the film. They are co-writing the script with Alex Rubens. College party movies have long held on to the idea that college is the best time ever — cue some drunk guy in the background screaming, “I love college!” before falling backwards into a frat house hedge or similar — from the “Revenge of the Nerds” franchise and “Animal House” to more modern entries like “Van Wilder” and “Accepted.” But what about the fun-loving college students who can’t quite have a good time with all that new-found freedom?
Such an idea seems to be the starting point for Cooper Raiff’s SXSW winner “S#!%house”, which follows just such a guy (Raiff himself) as he stumbles his way through a lonely, decidedly un-fun freshman year at college.

How many people still remember Julia Montgomery? This kind of commercial, and the revelation behind it, kind of makes me want to go out and find out just how many other older actors are taking parts in commercials at this time since trying to recognize her from her Revenge of the Nerds days is kind of hard to do at this point. She’s still an attractive woman to be certain, but Julia has definitely changed as the years have worn on. For all the roles she’s taken and all the time she’s been acting Julia Montgomery has certainly had a long a very fruitful career, but there’s one role that a lot of people likely remember for from this picture, Revenge of the Nerds. Betty Childs wasn’t much better than the average jock since she had a serious disdain for nerds and didn’t even want to kiss one at the kissing booth that was held by the Alpha’s and the Pi’s. With Valentine’s Day only a few days away, if you’re still looking for some gift ideas to win the affection of the horror fan in your life, then perhaps this latest batch of Blu-rays and DVD releases might give you some inspiration. And speaking of amore, Scream Factory has put together a brilliant Collector’s Edition for the original My Bloody Valentine that is a must-own for genre fans, and keeping with the theme, Takashi Miike’s First Love is coming home on both Blu and DVD this Tuesday as well.
We also have other romantic genre offerings coming out this week, too, including Transylvania 6-5000, Cupid, and Peter Strickland’s In Fabric, which is about obsessive love, but love nonetheless.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for February 11th include Get Gone, Inmate Zero, Rust, Omnivores, and a retro-style Blu-ray for the original When A Stranger Calls by Fred Walton.

And then there’s Orca (1977), an ostensible Jaws cash-in that sacrifices suspense for weirdness, with a goofy earnestness that’s impossible not to like.
It also came with its own subtitle, The Killer Whale, lest you were unclear about Dino De Laurentis (King Kong ‘76)’s intentions; make no mistake, this film was sold as a terrifying thriller in every trailer and print ad. Released near the end of July by Paramount Pictures, Orca didn’t net Jaws’ grosses or respect, with many critics dismissing it as overwrought and ridiculous. Well, of course it is. It’s...
