Exclusive: For the first time since launching eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book five years ago, writer-director Peter Farrelly returns to the Toronto Film Festival with another drama built around an obscure and difficult to be believed but fact-based road trip set in the turbulent 1960s.
The Greatest Beer Run Ever is the story of Chickie Donohue (Zac Efron), a patriotic longshoreman from New York who in the late ’60s is a gung ho supporter of the Vietnam War effort, and who essentially embraces a suggestion by the bartender at their local watering hole (an unrecognizable Bill Murray) to travel by boat to the jungles of ‘Nam to track down soldiers from the neighborhood and bring them cans of beer and show the boys they haven’t been forgotten back home. This harebrained tour becomes a wakeup call to Donohue about the terrifying things that are really going on over there.

Party on Pandora!
This week Walt Disney World opened its new theme park expansion, Pandora – The World of Avatar, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And among the eye-popping surprises and gravity-defying floating mountains is a truly unexpected treat: custom beer, wine and cocktail creations for adult visitors seeking an interstellar kick. (Parents of the universe, take note.)

At Pongu Pongu, a beverage kiosk located in the new area of the park, guests can sip on the Mo’Ara Margarita ($9.25), a strawberry-and-blood orange infused tequila drink topped with strawberry boba balls.

The simply-titled 1985 film, Beer, doesn’t so much have a plot as it does a basic commentary about the advertising world and the fantasies it harbors towards its own work. It goes from there to make a narrative that compounds upon that idea with a few nuggets of comedy and some clever commercials. Beyond that, it’s only sporadically funny and can’t really be considered dramatic. Beer definitely qualifies as oddball with its cast of characters and the little bit of nonsense the film puts them through, but there’s very little else to be said about it. When the credits roll, Beer is just another forgettable comedy lying in the shadows of better films of the genre in a decade known for legendary comedies. If anything helps Beer register it’s the well-chosen cast of Rip Torn, David Alan Grier, Peter Michael Goetz, William Russ, and Loretta Swit.

The Alamo Guide
for March 11th, 2010
Oh, SXSW… it’s a rocky relationship, you and I. We have a lot of fun together, you give me free booze and barbeque, keep me out way past my bedtime, get me home safely (most of the time), and then you take me out the next day. Then, near the end of the week, we start fighting. “I’m tired!” I say. “I don’t want your free tacos!” I say (and then eat three anyway). “My stomach has been f-ed up for Days, I don’t want your Southern Comfort!” and then two days later you’re gone. SXSW does this to all of us. It keeps the Alamo Ritz so busy that we have to nix all specialty programming for a week so we can show new movies, so keep that in mind this week.
