The hand-to-hand fight sequences contain elements of Jeet Kune Do: The Way Of The Intercepting Fist, which was created by Brandon Lee's father Bruce Lee as well as traditional Gun-Fu style sequences akin to John Woo's films.

According to director Ronny Yu, he had originally intended for the film to be more martial arts heavy. However, Brandon Lee expressed absolutely no desire to perform any martial arts for the film to avoid inevitable comparisons to his father, Bruce Lee. This required Yu to drastically change the entire direction of the movie and ultimately decided to go with a style more akin to the Heroic Bloodshed gun sequences seen in John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986), which was wildly popular at the time of filming
