Don Coscarelli perhaps does not get enough credit for crafting one of horror's most enduring franchises with "Phantasm." Dating back to the sleeper hit from 1979 that introduced audiences to Angus Scrimm's The Tall Man, the series pressed on for five films that premiered periodically all the way through 2016. Coscarelli directed the first four entries personally before handing the reins over to David Hartman for "Ravager". A segment in "V/H/S/99" even paid homage to "Phantasm." Not many franchises can say they got to five movies across nearly four decades.
But what of those who have never taken the plunge into this delightfully strange universe? What of those genre fans who are interested in seeing what Coscarelli dedicated so much of his life to? We're here to make it easy for you to do just that by providing the correct viewing order for the "Phantasm" movies, as well as...

The best legacy sequels concern themselves with the weight of the decades that have passed and the long-term effects of the events separated by the gulf of time between entries. While these stories occur across the wide spectrum of entertainment, the horror genre is uniquely positioned to explore such follow ups. After all, just as years affect a life, so too does the horrors of one blood-soaked Halloween night.
Long before Halloween (2018) brought Jamie Lee Curtis back into the fold as Laurie Strode in an effort to explore her deeply repressed trauma, Halloween H20 (1998) set out to accomplish just that. Itself twenty years removed from John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 is one of the most successful films of its kind and a high point for the franchise, providing emotional depth and a satisfying conclusion to Laurie Strode’s narrative. It may have hit theaters in early August, but its chilly,...

Earlier this week, we were devastated to hear that Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, had passed away at the age of 70, following a six year private battle with cancer. Among the many people who took to social media to mourn the loss of Reubens was special makeup effects artist Mark Shostrom, whose long list of credits includes The Slumber Party Massacre, The Beastmaster, The Mutilator, From Beyond, Witchboard, Prince of Darkness, Poltergeist III, Phantasm II and III, the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Evil Dead II. And while paying tribute to Reubens, Shostrom revealed that an iconic effect from Evil Dead II drew inspiration from an iconic effect in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure!
Shostrom said, “Paul Reubens provided huge inspiration for my work on Evil Dead II. I had been watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS on repeat while sculpting.

The late, great Paul Reubens was an artist of incredible duality, a quality embodied by his most famous character, Pee-wee Herman. With his neatly-cropped hair, snazzy red bow tie, and stylin' grey suit and pants, Pee-wee looked like a member of The Little Rascals who had inexplicably grown up overnight. He wasn't all childish innocence and mischief, though. More than a bratty streak, there was something undeniably twisted about Pee-wee, even if, as a kid, I could never quite place my finger on what it was. I just knew that I liked it.
Reubens' brilliance in the art of dark absurdism made him a perfect match for Tim Burton, another artist who appealed to my off-kilter sensibilities before I was old enough to understand why. The pair would join forces multiple times over the course of Reubens' career, beginning with Burton's feature directing debut, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," in 1985. Looking back now,...

While the early to mid-part of the ’80s was the time of the slasher, the later part of the decade decided to try a lot of new things. You had non-slasher sequels like Phantasm 2, Ghoulies 2, Critters 2, and Poltergeist III. You also had cool one-off properties like Bad Dreams, Dead Heat, and Killer Klowns From Outer Space. 1988 alone brought back the killer bug trope and while Juan Piquer Simon has the more famous gross out insect fest with Slugs, the other one is most certainly in the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw camp. It’s a rare thing to see a horror series with near complete creative control from one person. Currently, Damien Leone seems to be in the drivers seat for the Terrifier series that we are certain to get more entries in and I’ve talked about the Chucky/Child’s Play series that Don Mancini is the driving force for. There’s also another Don that’s in charge of another important horror series. Don Coscarelli gave us one of the most original and successful independent films of all time with 1979’s Phantasm. He wrote, directed, shot, and edited that first movie with his dad helping produce it and his mom doing costumes, production design,...

Writer/director Don Coscarelli kicked off a mind-bending horror franchise with his low budget 1979 classic Phantasm, following that up with Phantasm II in 1988 and Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead in 1994. One Phantasm phan who thought they knew where the franchise should go next was Roger Avary – and soon after sharing an Academy Award win with Quentin Tarantino for co-writing the stories that made up Pulp Fiction, Avary started crafting a Phantasm sequel script he called Phantasm 1999. Coscarelli was impressed with what Avary had come up with, and set out to bring Phantasm 1999 to the screen… but it never happened. Nods to the ideas in that script made it into Phantasm: Oblivion and Phantasm: Ravager, but the budget required for Phantasm 1999 (which was also called Phantasm 2013 A.D. and Phantasm’s End as time went on) could never be secured. So find out about the Phantasm movie that never was...

The flamethrower is one of the most delightfully unhinged lethal weapons because it, well, throws flames. And if you're a fan of them, you most likely recall instances in pop culture where they have turned up. Not too long ago, Elon Musk sold 20,000 of them through his Boring Store to extremely high demand. And the decision to do so was largely based on the scene in "Spaceballs" where Yogurt shows off all the merchandise for the film, including a flamethrower marketed as "a children's toy." Quentin Tarantino's 2019 "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" includes an exceptional flamethrower scene towards the end where a surprised Leonardo DiCaprio incinerates one of the Manson girls in his swimming pool. But the flamethrower in all of its chaotic glory is truly the weapon of the horror genre.

And now, thanks to director Casey Tebo (Happy Birthday) and writer Andy Greskoviak, that meme has come full circle and inspired its own movie. Is it one worth lining up to get, or something to grab from the post-Christmas clearance rack?

Horror is making money hand over fist right now and you have to imagine that anyone with the rights to a beloved classic horror franchise might be looking at Danny McBride and David Gordon Green’s soft reboot/continuation of Halloween with envious eyes.
Speaking of which, in a Reddit Ama, McBride was asked which franchise he’d like to see back on the big screen and he picked a stone cold cult classic: Phantasm. For those not familiar with the series, it begins with Don Coscarelli’s 1979 original, in which evil undertaker the Tall Man is transforming Earth’s dead into dwarf zombies that will be sent to his planet and used for slave labour (it makes more sense in context!).
Despite landing to mixed reviews, time has been kind to its charms, with contemporary critics praising the film’s surreal narrative and imagery. It eventually did well enough to merit four sequels,...

Half revenge thriller, half trippy mural on the side of a van, Panos Cosmatos’ “Mandy” is the kind of pretentious horror thriller that will drive some folks crazy and others into throes of ecstasy. It’s a deliberately paced, ultraviolent, outlandishly stylish delivery system for Nicolas Cage’s wild-eyed acting style, and a thoughtful meditation about why Death Metal totally rules.
Cage stars as Red Miller, a logger and heavy-metal enthusiast who lives with a fantasy artist named Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). Their lives are peaceful, filled with dreamy glances over vast horizons, watching cheesy sci-fi movies on television and reading pulp fantasy novels at work.
Into their lives drives the Children of the New Dawn, a cult led by Jeremiah Sand, who drive past Mandy on her way to work. Jeremiah decides that since all the fruits of this world are his for the taking — and they are — then he must have Mandy,...

While most of the big horror franchises of the decade were getting the sequel treatment in 1988—a year that saw the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, Phantasm II, Poltergeist III, The Howling IV and even Critters 2: The Main Course—one of the biggest and most lasting franchises of the next three decades was just getting its start. Yes, the 1988 release of Tom Holland’s Child’s Play kicked off 30 years of murderous antics from Charles Lee Ray, the serial killer who had his soul transferred into a Good Guys doll named Chucky. Seven movies, one recently announced remake, and another recently announced TV series later, the Child’s Play series is as strong as ever, even outlasting many of its ’80s franchise contemporaries.

Full disclosure: Phantasm II is my least favorite Phantasm movie. Fuller disclosure: the Phantasm movies comprise my favorite horror franchise, making the first point irrelevant to anyone else except my feeble little mind. So, even though it sits last on my roster, it’s still one of ’88's best horror movies, loaded with non-stop action, top-notch effects, and another towering and glowering turn by Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man. This is the super-sized and slick Phantasm movie that a lot of folks turn to when they have to scratch that graveyard itch.
To be honest, I wasn’t even aware that a sequel was on the horizon when I opened my local newspaper that hot summer night in ’88 looking for something to watch on the big screen. Yet there it was in the ad: the unmistakable glare of Scrimm, two unrecognizable teens, and series mastermind Don Coscarelli’s name plastered all over it.

The world of cinema has always been filled with dreamers, and a lot of those dreamers start out with nothing more than a Super 8 or 16mm camera, all the way up to the latest iPhones; little backyard excursions with friends and sisters or parents to fill out the cast for a monster on the loose or a super sleuth flick. Every once in a while there’s genuine talent to back up the enthusiasm; our Raimi’s and Coscarelli’s bear this out. But before them a group of enthusiastic teens actually had their vision realized, and eventually a mutated form of it invaded drive-ins as Equinox (1970), an inspirational and energetic full blown monster mash.
Released in October, Equinox began as a project in the mid ‘60s for creature kids Dennis Muren, David Allen and Mark McGee, combining their love of Famous Monsters of Filmland and Ray Harryhausen’s mesmerizing...

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. In fact, at the age of 19, he became the youngest director ever to have a film distributed by a major studio (a statistic that's often been alleged but which I cannot independently confirm) when Universal acquired his teen drama Jim, the World's Greatest for distribution. That film, which was financed by Coscarelli's father -- who put up the money for production after having "a good year in the stock market," in Coscarelli's words -- landed the teenage filmmaker and his co-director Craig Mitchell an office on the studio's lot to finish the movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...

In 1979, Don Coscarelli was 23 years old when he made a haunting, off-beat tale of two brothers facing off against an inter-dimensional threat known as The Tall Man, who Angus Scrimm (Coscarelli’s best friend) played with psychopathic intensity. “Phantasm” became a cult phenomenon, spawning four sequels; the purported finale, “Phantasm: Ravager” (Well Go USA), opens this week. But Scrimm’s no longer around to help promote it, and Coscarelli’s left on his own to contemplate a rocky career.
Whether or not it’s truly the last, “Ravager” does mark Scrimm’s final performance. The actor died in January at the age of 89, not long after production wrapped. When “Phantasm: Ravager” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, alongside a new 4k restoration of the original film (aided by Jj Abrams’ production studio, Bad Robot), the screenings had the air of a wake.

Well Go USA Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the North American rights for Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm" horror film series with ambitious re-release plans in the works.
The original 1979 cult classic Phantasm is scoring an all-new 4K restoration. It will be joined by never-before-seen HD restorations of 1994's "Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead" and 1998's "Phantasm IV: Oblivion".
They will joined by the debut of the fifth and final film in the series, 2016's "Phantasm: Ravager". All four films will be made available in remastered, high-definition versions across all cable and digital platforms on October 7th. The remaster of the first film will get a limited theatrical re-release on September 24th, while 'Ravager' will have a day-and-date limited theatrical on October 7th.

Who's planning to add Phantasm 2 to their Netflix account in order to check out this supposedly great sex scene?
Noah is officially no longer a virgin, and if we are to believe the rules of Scream, that means he's a goner.
The promo following Scream Season 2 Episode 9 sure didn't look good for him.
Being that this killer seems to have a habit of leaving people alive, I'm choosing to believe Noah will live, too. He's too big a character to die this early.
It feels like each character is taking a turn as the prime suspect, and they are really trying to make us buy into the "Emma's killing people in her sleep" theory. People have been guessing that Emma's been behind this all season and that she just doesn't realize it, but I personally have not jumped on that ship.
Going that route would feel cheap. Sidney was never the killer,...

As with most things in life, the fault rests with Brian Salisbury. I’ve had Don Coscarelli‘s The Beastmaster on the brain since late January when Salisbury and Robert Cargill covered the movie on their Junkfood Cinema podcast, and the recent announcement of a beautiful new 4k restoration of Coscarelli’s most famous film, Phantasm, sealed the deal. It was time to re-watch some Coscarelli. My favorite of his films is also his most recent, John Dies at the End, but I decided to go back to the one I thoroughly enjoyed as a pre-teen thanks to its PG-rated sword, sorcery, and topless bathing action. Coscarelli is always a fun listen — we’ve previously covered his commentaries for Phantasm and Phantasm II — and he’s joined here by his frequent collaborator, Paul Pepperman. Keep reading to see what I heard on The Beastmaster commentary. The Beastmaster (1982) Commentator: Don Coscarelli (director, co-writer...

A few years ago Jeremy Kirk gave a listen to the first Phantasm‘s commentary, but we never returned to Don Coscarelli‘s nightmarish world again with this column until now. The unfortunate passing of Angus Scrimm — aka The Tall Man — this past week has encouraged me to revisit the franchise with the second film in the series. It’s also the only entry I caught in theaters — I was too young for the first one, and the subsequent sequels have gone direct to DVD. Scream Factory released a fantastically packed Collector’s Edition of Phantasm II in 2013 featuring a commentary track with Coscarelli, Scrimm, and Reggie Bannister. (Just ignore that the option screen to select the commentary spells Scrimm’s name as “Scrumm.”) The director is such a calm, friendly, informative speaker, and his two guests follow suit making for a fun, anecdote-filled track. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Phantasm II commentary...

Being a huge Phantasm fan I was beyond excited to hear that a new sequel to the series had been shooting in secret and was in the process of post-production. Earlier this year we got a teaser trailer which looked amazing and today producer Don Coscarelli and director David Hartman gave us a little christmas present which teases us even more but at the same time give us a glimpse at the scope of the film which seems to surpass that that was in Phantasm 2.Phantasm: Ravager hits sometime in 2015 and I couldn't be more excited. This summer will see plenty of comic book movies and assorted blockbusters, but for those who enjoy more genre fare, enter Into the Storm. Opening August 8, the movie follows the town of Silverton as its inhabitants attempt to survive the mother of all tornadoes. The "found footage" thriller stars The Walking Dead's Sarah Wayne Callies as a meteorologist who pairs with a storm chaser (Veep's Matt Walsh) in order to track tornado data. "It's a bit of a contentious marriage of convenience," Callies told USA Today.
Enter The Hobbit's Richard Armitage, who plays an assistant school principal in search of his son during the tornado onslaught. According to director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5), what "Gravity did to space, [Into the Storm] will do to natural phenomena and weather."
While that is quite a boast, Quale apparently got a vote of confidence from his mentor, James Cameron, who, according to the director,...

Surprise, fanboys! One day after the first poster for “Phantasm V: Ravager” appeared online, the teaser trailer for the next installment of the long-running horror franchise popped up on the web. Since we don’t want to be one of the few outlets who aren’t covering this thing, you can check out the aforementioned clip below. Of course, I can’t wait to get my hands on “Ravager.” This genre-obsessed geek has had silver balls on the brain since “Phantasm II.” The most recent chapter of Don Coscarelli’s series arrived way back in 1998. Although I’ve changed a lot since those days, I still have plenty of time in my schedule for “Phantasm.” Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and the seemingly immortal Angus Scrimm are all back for “Ravager.” Although it’s anyone’s guess what in the world is happening in the teaser trailer,...

There’s never been a better time to look back on the Child’s Play franchise than this week, which sees the long awaited release of the sixth installment in the series; Curse of Chucky. Today, we shine the spotlight on one of the unsung heroes of the franchise; an actor by the name of Ed Gale, who actually played Chucky in the three most beloved installments. In fact, he’s the only actor to date who has physically portrayed the pint-sized terror.
Though it’s mostly Brad Dourif and special effects artist Kevin Yagher who are credited with bringing Chucky to life, the character never would’ve been able to move around on screen if it weren’t for Ed Gale. Inside the Chucky costume in Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky, Gale is essentially to the franchise what Kane Hodder is to the Friday the 13th...

Horror movies far too often abide by the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." These days it's no shock to see a sequel treading familiar ground. Whether the original director wants to return to his or her vision or a studio wants to strike gold twice, it's rare to see a sequel that really breaks the mold. But what's more exciting than a fresh take on an established franchise? We started thinking about all the times a sequel challenged our expectations and put together a list of our favorite sequels that veered from the course. They're nothing like their predecessors... and we love them for it!
Aliens The Predecessor: Ridley Scott's 1979 classic Alien was a tight, white-knuckled horror story set in space. Adrift in the galaxy, the crew of the Nostromo discover a derelict alien spacecraft and slowly, agonizingly discover just how screwed they really are.

I won't abide an unkind word about Don Coscarelli's 1979 cult classic horror flick known as Phantasm. Half a bizarre but cohesive thriller and half a compendium of bizarrely effective nightmare logic, the original Phantasm is one of the only movies to give me actual nightmares -- and I still think it holds up as a testament to the power of unique, weird, independent horror cinema.
I mention all of that because, well, as much as I adore Phantasm and many of Mr. Coscarelli's other films (Bubba Ho-tep, John Dies at the End, The Beastmaster, etc.) I've never really taken to the Phantasm sequels. It's a rare franchise in that all four chapters kept the same writer/director, and I'll always take unpredictable weirdness over lethargic formula, but where the first Phantasm was weird but mostly decipherable, the sequels are almost maddeningly confusing. Sure, each one has its charms, mainly...
