[Editor’s Note: Spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1 Episode 8, “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum,” follow.]
Mission Brief
There’s a lot going on this week, as “Discovery” makes full use of its ensemble, right down to its most supporting characters. (Shout-out to Wilson Cruz for making his very brief time on screen memorable, thanks to just one or two cautious looks.) The Klingons are attacking, Admiral Cornwell is under Klingon control, Stamets isn’t handling his tardigrade DNA upgrade all that well and…
We Got an Away Mission!
After weeks of war and conflict, what a pleasure to spend an episode on a familiar narrative: Starfleet officers explore a seemingly uninhabited planet and seek to learn its mysteries. The concept of a planet that is physically in harmony with itself is a fascinating one, and not only is it cool to see Tyler, Burnham, and Saru investigate it, but also investigate it with the express intention to do no harm. Instead, their goal, especially after...

Liam Neeson’s silly performance is a low point in a spy movie that mars a fascinating real-life story
Here’s a really old-fashioned war film, a recent hit at the South Korean box office, but creaky and clunky, weirdly reminiscent of big-budget prestige movies of years gone by such as The Longest Day, which used to always crop up on bank holiday TV. Yet this has the faintly sepia-digital tint of a modern period blockbuster. It’s set during the Korean war in 1950 and is all about the secret spy mission that preceded General Douglas MacArthur’s high-risk plan to attack North Korean-held territory at the Port of Incheon. CIA-backed South Korean partisans risked (and lost) their lives behind enemy lines posing as military officials, gathering intelligence about mine placements and other fortifications. Lee Jung-jae plays Jang, the undercover operative working for the west; Lee Beom-su is the brutal North Korean colonel Kim,...

Bless their hearts. Even though it’s the end of the world on Fear the Walking Dead, Chris and Alicia were still indulging their guilty consciences in this week’s episode — in the former’s case, with bloody disastrous results. The original Captain Kirk will not be making an appearance in this summer's Star Trek Beyond...
This story contains a spoiler for Star Trek: Generations
As Star Trek gets set to celebrate its 50th birthday this year, the centrepiece of those celebrations is set to be the 13th big screen outing for the USS Enterprise. Star Trek Beyond is due in cinemas at the end of July, with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto leading the cast. Justin Lin is directing this time around, and Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have provided the screenplay.
The previous two Star Trek movies have found room for a cameo appearance for the late, great Leonard Nimoy. And William Shatner had hinted that he might be reprising the role of Captain Kirk in the new movie, for a brief appearance.
As it turns out, that's not going to be the case. Chatting to SFX,...

William Shatner presents a new documentary going behind the scenes on the early tumultuous years of Star Trek: The Next Generation...
The revival of Star Trek in the late 1980s ultimately proved so popular that it’s strange to think it was almost sunk by infighting and internal politics between those who most desperately wanted to see it succeed. And yet, that’s what happened. You don’t have to be a particularly keen fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation to notice that the earliest two seasons are ropey and inconsistent. In many ways, it’s surprising that they got made at all.
This is the stance taken by William Shatner’s latest Star Trek documentary, entitled Chaos On The Bridge, which examines the tumultuous early years of Tng and the circumstances surrounding its creation. It’s been more than 25 years since Star Trek: The Next Generation went into production,...

Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, chats to us about his Star Trek: The Next Generation documentary, Chaos On The Bridge...
William Shatner Presents: Chaos On The Bridge is a documentary covering the tumultuous early years of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as told by the writers and producers who worked on it. Written, produced and directed by William Shatner, the 60-minute film has recently been made available worldwide for the first time following a limited release last year, so we took a moment to sit down to talk with the man himself and find out what the story behind it really is.
So, the documentary is essentially the story of how Gene Roddenberry passed the Star Trek torch - or possibly had it wrested from him - during the first few years of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first thing I'd like to ask is how you remember Gene,...

Lieutenant Troi goes mind-blind in this week's Star Trek: The Next Generation look-back...
This review contains spoilers.
The episode opens with Troi counselling Ensign Brooks over her unwillingness to deal with her husband's death (Ensign Brooks', that is, not Troi. Troi's totally over it) but as she says goodbye, she's stricken with a debilitating headache. On the bridge, Worf notices some weird sensor images, but can't explain what they are. Rather than hang around to find out, the Enterprise tries to leave but stalls immediately, throwing everyone forward slightly. This is what happens when someone other than Wesley does the driving.
In her office, Deanna contacts Crusher complaining of dizziness, but Crusher has a tonne of minor injuries to deal with so she tells Deanna to hang tight. On the bridge, the Enterprise crew are probing their situation and realising that they may well be stuck. Without Wesley to solve the problem,...

Is the big bad "A" just somebody's kid brother?
Tuesday night's episode of Pretty Little Liars pointed the finger at delinquent lax bro–turned–grieving boyfriend Mike, who's acting super shady in the wake of original A Mona's (Janel Parrish) death.
So what's the deal with Aria's (Lucy Hale) younger sibling? We've got the scoop from actor Cody Christian on his character's mysterious new plot development – and whether he really could be A.
"Well I'm not going to say 'no.' I think it's possible. That's the thing that keeps the show going: the mystery. You don't know," Christian, 19, tells People.

Co-Production Development Fund launched between Germany and Italy; growing concern about future of German incentive Dfff
Germany and Italy have established a Co-Production Development Fund to support the joint development of German-Italian co-productions from 2015.
The Germany Federal Film Board (Ffa) and Italy’s Ministry for Culture and Tourism (MiBACT) are each providing $63,350 (€50,000) for the Fund’s annual budget, and funding of up to $38,000 (€30,000) each will be awarded to ¨projects which are interesting for the German and Italian cinema audiences, but also for the global film market.¨
Apart from encouraging more collaboration by producers on joint projects, the initiative also aims to foster the creation of networks between film-makers from bost countries.
This is the fifth co-development fund to be launched by German funders with opposite numbers elsewhere in Europe over the past 10 years.
