Thanks to a well-reviewed movie star, Bleecker Street took “Captain Fantastic” to a now-rare, once-common $20,000-plus limited per theater opening. With all well-oiled cylinders at work, Bleecker filled the demand for older-audience films after two failed recent attempts by others at corralling the younger market (“Swiss Army Man” and “The Neon Demon”).
Two New York-only docs, “Under the Sun” (Icarus) and Sundance opener “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You” (Music Box) both attracted interest.
A wider Bollywood release, Salman Khan-starrer “Sultan” (Yash Raj), achieved something few specialized films have managed in recent months: a Top Ten placement despite playing at fewer than 300 theaters.
Meantime, The Orchard’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” expanded again to strong numbers close to last weekend’s. This word-of-mouth hit could play all summer and expand wider. There is still an audience out there: it’s just more selective.

Prince George, reporting for duty! On Friday, the nearly 3-year-old prince joined his parents for the first time during one of their official royal engagements in the United Kingdom. Prince William and Princess Kate surprised visitors at the Royal International Air Tattoo at Raf (Royal Air Force) Fairford by bringing along their airplane-loving son. George, who wore noise-blocking ear protectors, pointed at planes in the sky, waved to visitors and seemed especially fascinated by the tail rotor of a helicopter. "I imagine his father has told him about helicopters, so he knew what that was called and kept saying, 'tail rotor.

We'd had some really shaky rehearsals, so to go out there and kill it the way we did was really rewarding.

Paulette Leaphart has inspired millions of people in her fight against breast cancer, and thanks to Beyoncé, her story has now touched even more. Turning lemons to lemonade, the breast cancer survivor and mother of eight has been on an incredible journey that ended in joy on the set of Beyoncé's Lemonade visual album. While training for her 1,000 mile bare-chested walk for cancer awareness (which begins Saturday), Leaphart learned of a casting for a "top secret" video being made for a "very big star." She took her 8-year-old daughter Madeline to audition, but it was Leaphart who ended up with a part.

Jerry Lawler is no stranger to politics. The wrestling legend and current WWE announcer once ran for Mayor of his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. However, a simple tweet Lawler sent out last week resulted in more backlash over politics than he has likely ever received.
If you’re a longtime wrestling fan, you’ve probably heard Lawler make the occasional political reference over the years. Typically during presidential election years, Lawler has been known to take a political jab when a chance arises while he is doing commentary. This time, Lawler made his support for Donald Trump’s presidential run known via social media.
Lawler sent out the following tweet last week, and it was met with immediate blowback from many of his followers:
Supporting @realDonaldTrump like I do is great. Getting out to vote for him even better! Vote today Nh! #Fitn #TrumpTrain

I’d been a Sega kid in my formative years as a gamer thanks to an ill-advised decision from my parents to buy me a Mega Drive (that’s a Genesis, for you in the colonies) rather than a Snes. Like any true Sega gamer, I used to convince myself that I had the best machine. Mario? Pfft. He was just a fat plumber fighting an angry turtle. Sonic was the man (figuratively). He was radical and gnarly and other embarrassing nineties words. He had kick ass shoes, and he was super fast, and he had to fight a crazy moustachio’d scientist to save the animals. And we were all about nature in the early nineties. That’s where Captain Planet and Earth Song came from. Sonic the Hedgehog rocked my socks.
Except Sonic the Hedgehog was, for lack of a better word, shit, and I’d been kidding myself the whole time.

After May’s intense and continuity-heavy Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel provided a smaller adventure (figuratively and literally) for moviegoers over the weekend with Ant-Man. Still, as with any Marvel project, there were plenty of ties to the rest of the McU, from Scott Lang’s fight with Falcon to a quick Spider-Man reference. While Easter Eggs and cameos are fun to see, the film also found time to expand on the universe…literally. In the midst of the shrinking shenanigans, the superhero heist film introduced audiences to a new world: the Quantum Realm. Getting Out's a Lot Harder Than Getting In... In Ant-Man, Hank Pym describes the Quantum Realm as an alternate dimension that can be accessed ...

Getting out of school when you're a kid (or at any age, really) is pretty much the best feeling of all time. It's like a get out of jail free card, but only if you have the coveted note. One student in New Hampshire had the note to end all notes. Ollie, 9, who attends Greenland Central School, went to Hillary Clinton's launch party in Concord, New Hampshire, with his mother and grandfather, where he brought a note with him to prove to his third grade teacher that he was actually at Clinton's event. Lucky for him, the democratic candidate was more than happy to sign! Her campaign squad tweeted the note Tuesday, and along with her signature the also includes an asterisk that says,...

The best new play on Broadway at the moment is Lisa Kron’s book for the musical “Fun Home,” which opened Sunday at Circle in the Square in New York. Kron’s achievement here recalls Marsha Norman’s breakthrough play in the late 1970s, “Getting Out,” which looks at a woman’s life before and after her parole, the character played by two different actresses. Kron ups that challenge by seeing her character Alison at three stages in life, played by three actresses. While Alison never goes to prison, she does grow up in a household that, at times, resembles one,...

It's Christmas time and there's a need to be afraid... Here's Christine's review of a particularly bonkers festive episode of Grimm...

4.7 The Grimm Who Stole Christmas
You know that old saying, “nutty as a fruitcake”? Well that could easily be applied to this week’s Grimm (and if you’ve seen the episode, this works on a couple of different levels.)
While last year we had the Wesen version of Bad Santa in Krampus, The Grimm Who Stole Christmas is this year’s nod to the festive season.
The mystery centred on three little goblins who wreaked havoc on the festivities. However, they turn out not to be Wesen but pubescent boys – awful smell and all – which are afflicted by a rare genetic, seasonal disorder that makes them go as bonkers as if they’ve consumed an family-sized tin of Quality Street.

Earlier this year she spent some time in a rehab facility and during her stay Kesha wrote a number of letters to her fans to tell them about the treatment she endured from producer/mentor Dr. Luke.
Sent out from the Timberlake Knolls Residential Treatment Center, the newly-uncovered writings seem to corroborate the “Timber” singer’s sentiments about Luke in her recently-filed sexual/emotional/physical abuse lawsuit.
One letter claims that Dr. Luke did “much more terrible sh*t” than anyone actually knew about. Another declares, “Dr. Luke has tortured me and my family.”
Furthermore, writes Kesha, “These music business a**holes (well, Dr. Luke) had almost successfully crushed my magic. But that f*cker didn’t win.”
The “TiK ToK” singer’s lawyer Mark Geragos explained that Kesha didn’t feel comfortable coming out with a lawsuit until very recently. "She's made efforts, [but] she is not a confrontational person.

Nowadays, there is at least one easily accessible area of life in which every individual is susceptible to irrevocable addiction. For the gourmet, it’s a good meal. For the gourmand, it’s a big meal. For the understimulated who don’t care so much about sleep, it’s Netflix. For anybody who has ever made the mistake of glancing at the list of recommendations after watching a 30-second clip of a baby panda doing something adorable, it’s YouTube. Usually, the addiction is relatively harmless, and more distracting than actually crippling. What’s wrong with craving chocolate or feeling the need to marathon all nine seasons of The X-Files Asap? And it’s not like that sneezing panda cub is going to swoon at itself.
For you, however, the addiction does not lie in multi-course meals or streaming videos. For you, the addiction is far more distressing.

Halt and Catch Fire, Season 1, Episode 9: “Up Helly Aa”
Directed by Terry McDonough
Written by Jason Cahill
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on AMC
The entire season of Halt and Catch Fire has existed in a sort of parallel universe 1983. The fictional Cardiff Electric crosses paths with real companies like Ibm and Texas Instruments. Various characters mention Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, but the show hasn’t been too clear about how close it is adhering to the historical timeline of the development of the PC. The final scene of “Up Helly Aa” makes it clear that they are living in the real world, where the introduction of the Apple Macintosh is soon to blow up the emerging PC market and relegate all competitors to also-rans, at least until Microsoft Windows eclipses it in the early 1990s.

The entire season of Halt and Catch Fire has existed in a sort of parallel universe 1983. The fictional Cardiff Electric crosses paths with real companies like Ibm and Texas Instruments. With a festival of football about to take over your TV screens for the summer, we caught up with the BBC pundits and presenters heading out to Brazil to ask the big questions.
Who is going to win it? Are England doomed? And what on earth do we do if it goes to penalties?
England's chances?
Things don't look too cheery for Roy's boys. Getting out of the group stage is being treated as a major achievement, and even getting that far is being too optimistic for some of the pundits.
Mark Chapman: "I can't see them getting out of the group. I don't know if that makes me pessimistic, realistic or what. I just can't seem them getting past Uruguay. Thankfully, I think fans are more realistic and the media are being more realistic this time. We haven't seen any England players wrapped in the St George's flag saying...

Getting out for a little fresh air in the Big Apple, new parents Simon Cowell and Lauren Silverman went for a stroll down Fifth Avenue today (February 19).
Looking fantastic after welcoming their son, Eric into the world, the "X Factor" host and his lady love plodded along in heavy raincoats keeping close to one another, and trying their hardest to escape the paparazzi.
The couple's little guy was born on Valentine's Day 2014, and Simon, 54, can hardly contain himself, posting a handful of statuses and pictures of Eric on his Twitter account.
However, returning to business, the "American Idol" judge congratulated One Direction for winning Brit's Global Success Award for a second year, tweeting, "Congratulations One D! Stoke City manager Mark Hughes was far from happy after he witnessed his side lose 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light and he felt aggrieved by some of the refereeing decisions during the match.
The Potters lost Steven Nzonzi early in the second half as they trailed 1-0. The Stoke man picked up his second yellow after a foul on Altidore, which upset the manager. Hughes said:
“Once again we’ve been hurt by poor refereeing decisions. He’s unlucky as I feel Altidore went down very easily, there was minimal contact. It’s outrageous from my point of view.”
Hughes was extremely unhappy as he feels his side were the better of the two on the night but they came away with nothing to show for it, slipping closer towards the dreaded drop zone. He said:
“We’re disappointed that our performance got no result.

Barbara Walters named Hillary Clinton Most Fascinating Person of the Year tonight in her 2013 countdown show of the 10 Most Fascinating People. Clinton came as somewhat of a surprise, as this was the first time in decades that neither Hillary nor former president Bill Clinton have been in any type of public office. Getting out of the spotlight was a welcome relief for the former secretary of state. “I wanted to get off the high wire,” Clinton told Walters. She wanted to “spend time doing things that give us a lot of joy – play with our dogs, go … Continue reading →

How much should a father try to steer his offspring's life?
Such was the question for Mike (Fox) in Thursday's episode of NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show," with college-dropout son Ian (Conor Romero) taking his cue from the tale's subtitle. He plans to return to his high school for "Homecoming" ... along with his girlfriend from those days, the unseen Reese, making Mike increasingly resolute that Ian should go back to college.
Ian's get-rich-quick schemes suggest a return to higher education isn't on his radar, his latest being selling clothes at Today's Man. "I'm just worried he's not living up to his potential," Mike laments. Annie (Betsy Brandt) suggests Ian just might end up "the next Mark Zuckerberg," but Mike remains skeptical.
He has to admit he's impressed upon overhearing Ian drive a hard bargain ("I ought to get you on the phone with Time Warner," opines Mike), only to...

With "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" the No. 1 movie at the box office, young star Jackson Nicoll stopped by "Live with Kelly and Michael" to chat about the flick. The 9-year-old was absolutely priceless as he shot down Kelly Ripa for calling him "cute as a button." "Buttons aren't cute," he quips.

Tonight’s penultimate episode of the Devious Maids Season 1 put us one step closer to what will surely be a finale to remember.
Hands down, this has become my favorite guilty pleasure of the summer. Week in and week out, it’s left me wanting more and seemingly questioning what really happened to Flora.
So, what went down on "Getting Out the Blood"? Let’s discuss…
For starters, I wasn’t surprised that Remi confronted Philippe and accused him of killing Flora. With Marisol continuing to dig deeper, Taylor also kept telling Michael about her particularly intriguing questions.
I’ll admit that it was hard for me to believe that Philippe could be evil because I constantly think Eric Camden every time I see him. However, this instantly changed when he ordered a hit on Marisol.
I had a feeling that the shooter would mistakenly shoot Taylor instead of Marisol.

Sparrows Dance
Written by Noah Buschel
Directed by Noah Buschel
USA, 2012
Set in modern-day New York City, Noah Buschel’s Sparrows Dance follows the day-to-day life of an agoraphobic former-actress (a drabbed down Marin Ireland, Homeland). Hitting a decent amount of the Mumblecore check points, the film is low budget (an estimated $175,000 production) and uses naturalistic dialogue and pacing. At the beginning of the 82 minute film, a good fifteen minutes or so is dedicated to establishing that the female lead is indeed agoraphobic and that her life revolves around bodily functions such as going to the bathroom (the film starts with her on the toiler), exercising (on a vintage-looking stationary bike) and eating (takeout: the agoraphobic’s choice). Unfortunately for her neurosis and luckily for us, her toilet clogs up enough that she has to call up a plumbing service. To her dismay, they tell her that they can’t...
