Daniel Feeld is a TV writer whose latest work, "Karaoke" is in production. He constantly battles with the ambitious director, Nick Balmer, who continues to try and change his script. Feeld is also undergoing medical tests in hospital after recently feeling ill. One day he becomes disturbed when he overhears a passing couple voicing lines from his latest work, a murder thriller. And later that night with a friend at dinner he spots a girl at a table with a man seemingly repeating a scene from his work for real. He is even more disturbed when he learns that the girl is called Sandra, just like his character in his script, as in his work she later ends up murdered.

Feeld is now in hospital, having collapsed at Arthur Mallion's Karaoke strip club after following Sandra there, the girl from the restaurant. His consultant sends him for tests to see what is wrong with him, warning him that it could be serious. But while there he receives an unexpected visit from Sandra, and tries to explain to her about his work and his premonitions in his script. Meanwhile, it becomes obvious to his work colleagues that Nick Balmer, the show's director, is infatuated with Linda Langer, the actress playing the character of Sandra. Nick is in fact having an affair with Linda, but when he tries phoning her one night little does he realize that also at her flat is Arthur "Pig" Mallion, owner of the Karaoke bar where Sandra works, listening to his call on the answer machine.
