They’re going to need an even bigger dining room table.
Paul Giamatti, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan are joining the third “Downton Abbey” feature film. Giamatti, who recently scored an Oscar nomination playing an ornery teacher in “The Holdovers,” is reprising his role as Harold Levinson, the bother of Elizabeth McGovern’s Cora Grantham, a part he played in the TV show that spawned the film franchise.
No word yet on who Richardson, Nivola, Beale and Froushan will portray. Nor are there any details about the plot, but this being “Downton Abbey” you can expect silverware to be polished to a high gloss, tables set with military precision and a mad dash to find an adequate number of ladies maids to service all the guests for this or that soiree.
Richardson’s credits include “Nip/Tuck,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Red Sparrow.” Nivola recently starred in...

Watch just about any media from the mid-20th century and you'll quickly notice something: people smoked a lot more onscreen back then -- like, a lot more. Those born in the current century would no doubt be shocked to learn that even beloved cartoon icons like Donald Duck would light up a pipe or puff away on a stogie when the occasion merited (and that's to say nothing of commercials like the jaw-dropping marketing campaign where Fred Flinstone gets his buddy Barney and his wife Wilma hooked on Winston cigarettes).
Smoking was a useful visual shorthand for a variety of things. When Cruella De Vil spewed a wreath of putrid yellow smoke from her infamous cigarette holder in Disney's animated "101 Dalmatians," you just knew she was trouble, even before dog-napping entered the equation. Alternatively, when Cary Grant carefully lit Eva Marie Saint's cigarette in perhaps the ultimate Alfred Hitchcock picture,...

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman‘s performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

The influence of manga and anime for many years now has long left the confines of the country of Japan and has become a worldwide staple for many fans from different parts of the world. This success can be attributed to a few series from the early days, specifically, the Dragon Ball anime series that started the propagation of the culture across the globe.
A still from Dragon Ball Z
The influence and popularity of this series despite it being four decades old has to be attributed to the great work that creator Akira Toriyama did with it. And just like any great mind, he too was inspired by legendary creators and their creations before him.
More specifically, the Mangaka was inspired by many Disney animated features from the ’50s and ’60s, one of which was a feature song from the film Cinderella called Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, which became the reason behind the names of Bibidi,...

It's not often that an artist defines a whole genre and/or medium, but the mangaka Akira Toriyama — creator of "Dragon Ball" — was one of those. Tragically, he's now left us; the official "Dragon Ball" Twitter account has confirmed that Toriyama passed away on March 1, 2024, at the age of 68 due to an acute subdural hematoma. His family and loved ones have reportedly held a funeral service.
Born in 1955, Toriyama wanted to be an artist from a young age, inspired by works such as the Disney film "101 Dalmatians." He came into Weekly Shōnen Jump's good graces during his 20s after entering an art contest hosted by the magazine and, in 1980 at age 25, created his first hit manga: "Dr. Slump." After that series wrapped its four-year run, he started on "Dragon Ball."

Emma Stone tells Variety that shooting for Disney’s “Cruella” sequel will begin “Hopefully sooner rather than later.”
Stone, who plays the titular anti-hero Cruella de Vil in the 2021 live action prequel to “101 Dalmatians,” added that the follow up film is “a work in progress.”
Stone continued to offer updates on the anticipated sequel on the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Thursday night. When asked about revisiting the iconic antagonist, she said, “It’s a blast. She’s a blast. So yeah, we’ll see. It’s a work in progress.”
The first “Cruella” was a box office success, amassing more than $220 million at the global box office. News of a developing sequel broke only weeks after the film’s release in theaters. Stone was confirmed to return to the franchise in August 2021. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are also expected to return.

When Disney 2D animation legend Andreas Deja left the studio in 2013 after three decades — he’s best known for supervising such iconic ’90s villains as Gaston from “Beauty and the Beast,” Jafar from “Aladdin,” and Scar from “The Lion King” — he wanted to direct. Thus began a seven-year passion project to make his first short, “Mushka” (a Russian term of endearment for “sweetheart”), about a young girl who rescues the titular tiger cub in the forest and raises him.
Deja’s goal was to channel the look of the Disney films from the ’60s that he grew up with in Germany, particularly “The Jungle Book” — the first he experienced and his favorite — which made him want to become an animator.
Deja started thinking about returning to his first love — drawing animals — and the friendly dynamic between the innocent girl and the powerful tiger. It turned out to be a fitting...

In early November 2023, DreamWorks founder Jeffrey Katzenberg made headlines when he claimed that generative artificial intelligence could cut the cost of animated films by "90 percent." It's a bold claim coming from the man whose recent success stories include being behind the "groundbreaking" streaming service Quibi, which lasted a whopping seven months and cost a reported $1.75 billion, but one that should worry creatives everywhere. It certainly doesn't help when we have filmmakers like Joe Russo claiming AI to be "the future of storytelling."
Disney has already been busted for creating digital replicas of background extras without compensation, and voiceover artists are already seeing roles replaced with AI. AI is a legitimate problem and threat to the industry, not because it can legitimately replace human beings in creative fields but because plenty of people in positions of power (and therefore control the checkbook) believe it can. And it'll take years and untold...

Winnie Harlow is reclaiming her power this Halloween. On Oct. 31, the model dressed as Cruella de Vil from Disney's classic "101 Dalmatians" movie. From the dual-tone bouffant to her wickedly sharp eyeliner, Harlow nailed the villainous look. This year, however, the black-and-white ensemble was more than just a nostalgic pop culture costume. On Instagram, Harlow revealed her costume choice was inspired by her childhood bullies, who often teased her about her vitiligo, a skin condition that affects the melanin in certain areas of the skin.
"This Halloween is really dedicated to little Winnie."
"Growing up I got teased a lot for my skin," Harlow said. "I got called everything you already know.. and Dalmatian. That really got to me when I was little. So much so that I realized I had a bit of disdain for the film as a child." Though Harlow disliked...

Ideally timed to Disney’s centennial, a short film entitled “Once Upon a Studio” assembles 100 years’ worth of animated characters from the company’s vaults for a group photo outside Walt Disney Animation Studios headquarters in Burbank, Calif. That’s the building, shaped like Mickey Mouse’s conical blue hat from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” where the walls are lined with images from a century’s worth of iconic toons.
Conceived and directed by Trent Correy and Dan Abraham, the project involves a live-action walkthrough of the place where the magic happens — that is, where much of the work on Disney’s animated features is done. But there’s an extra sprinkling of magic here, as cartoon characters leap out of their frames and wander the halls where they were originally drawn or rendered.

It took a village of creatives at Disney Animation to pull off “Once Upon a Studio,” the animated short that celebrates 100 years of stories and magic. Iconic characters like Snow White and Peter Pan feature alongside Robin Williams’ Genie in a cast of 543 characters from more than 85 feature-length and short films. And it all came together without any artificial intelligence involved.
Directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy were seeking a way to honor the studio’s legacy. “Once Upon a Studio” takes place at the end of a work day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank. The studio becomes a magical place once Disney Legend Burny Mattinson, who worked there for 70 years on films such as “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” (1961), leaves. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse step out of a photo and call for their friends to gather for an official 100th Anniversary Studio portrait.

If hand-drawn animation ever needed a jump start at Disney, now’s the time. Maybe “Once Upon a Studio,” the hybrid short where 2D takes center stage in a multi-character crossover, will provide the first baby step. But even if it’s only a momentary 100th-anniversary legacy booster, it’s a cause for celebration as 543 newly animated characters (mostly hand-drawn) leap out of their photographs in the live-action Roy E. Disney Animation building to roam the halls and gather outside for a group photo.

There are few Disney animated classics as beloved and revered as “Beauty and the Beast.” So you can understand why artist Tom Whalen, whose distinctive style has been brought to everything from “Avengers”-themed cans of Coke to the actual poster for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Disneyland, was so excited to do a screen-print for the movie, which TheWrap can exclusively reveal.
The artist — who has also imagined Disney classics like “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Little Mermaid” in print form — told TheWrap the 1991 movie was “definitely in the top 3” of his favorite Disney animated movies and he was thrilled to be able to craft his own take on the film. “That ‘90s revival was so fun, I was so into it at the time,” Whalen said.

As Disney Animation celebrates its centennial, the studio released the trailer for its nostalgic Once Upon a Studio, an animated short that the filmmakers describe as a love letter to the studio, its artists and fans.

I was so emotional,” she said, as Abraham added, “I will never forget that pitch. She made us cry, right from the start.”
It begins with a live-action shot in the lobby of Disney’s animation building, as a young employee chats with Disney legend Burny Mattinson, who joined the studio as a teenager in 1953 and stayed until his death this year.

One of my favorite current directors is Craig Gillespie. He’s had an interesting career, with him directing the very underrated remake of Fright Night before taking a detour into big-budget fare with the Chris Pine vehicle Finest Hours. However, his career took off when he helmed I, Tonya in 2017. A darkly comic but empathetic look at the Tonya Harding scandal, the movie helped Margot Robbie breakthrough as a major star. Gillespie adopted the same technique he used for that movie to the Disney 101 Dalmatians spin-off, Cruella, which, despite coming out at the height of the pandemic, still made over $200 million at the box office.
Gillespie’s since juggled work on the big screen with the small screen, having recently directed Pam & Tommy and Mike for Hulu, which stuck pretty closely to the I, Tonya formula. Now, Gillespie’s back on the big screen with Dumb Money, a funny take on the GameStop saga,...

The first episode of Netflix’s “One Piece,” an English live-action adaptation of the long-running Japanese manga series from artist Eiichiro Oda, starts off the same way that the first 47 installments of said manga’s anime adaptation begins. The franchise is set in an unnamed world covered almost completely by sea, where piracy runs rampant thanks in part to the execution of the King of the Pirates, Gold Roger. Before his death, Roger told onlookers that his life’s treasure, the so-called “One Piece,” was hidden away somewhere, and whoever found it would be his worthy successor.
In the anime version of this moment, Roger’s final moment is handled via a roughly 20-second intro to the show’s credits sequence, portrayed as a series of finely-detailed drawings on a long piece of parchment paper. The Netflix series, which releases all eight of its episodes on Thursday, opts to fully...

Producer Erik Feig could have been describing “SuperBad” or “Good Boys” when he outlined his new movie to Universal, pitching them on backing his mid-budget film with a detailed slideshow that included everything from ideas for TikTok promotions to potential merchandising. “This is a raunchy, cinematic comedy with heart, about finding your people and your purpose,” a slideshow for the Picturestart founder’s new project, “Strays,” read. Except, in this case, there’s a twist. “It just happens to star a pack of dogs.”
It’s getting harder and harder to convince studios to take the plunge when it comes to movies that aren’t based on toys or comic books. That’s something Feig knows all too well, having previously served as the head of Lionsgate’s film division.

From Lassie and Rin Tin Tin to 101 Dalmatians, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Purpose and on and on, the canine genre has been a staple of Hollywood movies for decades. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to make a balls-out, foul-mouthed, R-rated subversion of it all, and finally its time has come with the irresistible Strays, a film definitely not designed as a family movie or for kids — though I would bet, despite the language and nonstop dick jokes, they would love it anyway.

Genndy Tartakovsky, behind “Hotel Transylvania” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” has revealed the voice cast – led by Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn – and a first-look image for his upcoming R-rated animation, “Fixed.”
The film, which will be completed in September, is an adult comedy about Bull: an average dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls.

Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson are set to star alongside John Malkovich in the biopic of Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache, Variety can reveal.
Also joining the cast is Ben Schnetzer (“The Book Thief”), who has replaced Rupert Friend after scheduling difficulties meant Friend had to drop out of the project. Schnetzer will play a young version of Celebidachi while Malkovich will play the conductor later in life.
They will be joined by Kate Phillips (“Downton Abbey”), Anton Lesser (“Game of Thrones”) and Charlie Rowe (“Rocketman”).
“The Yellow Tie” tells the story of controversial classical conductor Sergiu Celibidache, one of Romania’s best known classical music artists. He battled homelessness and prejudice before becoming the youngest ever conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

The recently announced live-action remake of “Moana” is still in development, but Auli’i Cravalho won’t be returning, a least not in front of the camera. The actress took to Instagram to pass the proverbial torch to whoever will be playing the title role for the next go-around.
“When I was cast as Moana at 14,” stated Cravalho in an upbeat and affirmative statement, “it wonderfully changed my life and started my career.” The 22-year-old continued, stating “In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”
“I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength. I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures and communities that help inspire her story,...

Emma Stone is reviving more than just her Hollywood presence in the first official trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie, “Poor Things.”
The upcoming film is a story of “love, discovery and scientific daring” set in the Victorian era, based on an adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s novel of the same name. Stone plays Belle Baxter, a Frankenstein-like woman who is brought back to life after her brain is replaced with that of her unborn child. Stone stars opposite Willem Dafoe, who plays the brilliant, yet unorthodox, scientist who resurrects Belle from the dead. Her ghostly pale skin in the trailer hints at her character’s predeceased origins.
The “Poor Things” cast also includes Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn, Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley and Ramy Youssef as Max McCandless, Christopher Abbott as Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington, Margaret Qualley, Kathryn Hunter, Suzy Bemba and Wayne Brett.

Genndy Tartakovsky has proudly become the auteur of adult 2D animation. His new “Unicorn Warriors: Eternal” steampunk series premieres May 4 on Adult Swim; he’s completing his R-rated dog comedy “Fixed” for release next year at Sony Pictures Animation; and he’s prepping for Season 3 of his Emmy-winning “Primal” series at Adult Swim, but departing from the prehistoric world.
With “Unicorn Warriors,” though, Tartakovsky combines his personal steampunk aesthetic with action and humor, going back to his old Cartoon Network days, but without the gore of “Primal” or “Samurai Jack.” It’s about three heroes — powerful sorceress Melinda (Hazel Doupe), cosmic monk Seng (Demari Hunte), and warrior elf Edred (Tom Milligan) — reawakened through eternity as teenagers to fight a mysterious supernatural force threatening humanity. In the first season, the three find themselves in industrial London, joined by a steam-powered robot, Copernicus.

Maia Kealoha’s film career will hit the ground running. Deadline has confirmed that the newcomer has been cast as Lilo in Lilo & Stitch, Disney+’s live-action version of the Hawaii-set 2002 animated pic.
Kealoha’s casting is reminiscent of another Polyneisa-centric Disney film, 2016’s Moana, in which Hawaii-born then-newcomer Auli’i Cravalho was chosen to voice the lead character from the fictional island of Motunui.
Dean Fleischer Camp — fresh off an Oscar nom for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On — will direct the film, which also stars Zach Galifianakis. It follows the relationship between a lonely girl named Lilo and Stitch, an alien engineered to be a force of destruction.
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright scripted the new film, from a previous draft by Mike Van Waes. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, with Ryan Halprin exec producing for the company.

Burny Mattinson, a Disney Legend who served as an animator, producer, director and story artist in his nearly 70-year career with the studio, died Monday at the age of 87 following a short illness. Disney announced his death on their official website.
The story goes that Mattinson, who was born in San Francisco in 1935, was transformed when his mother took him to see Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio” at the age of 6. He knew what he wanted to do. As Don Hahn, who produced some of Disney’s most beloved movies during the Disney Renaissance, said of Mattinson’s life: “His life could be a Disney movie: teenaged kid shows up at the Disney gate with his portfolio under his arm and stays for 70 years. He was our story sensei, a brilliant draftsman who showed us what it was like to grind on a story until it was right.”

As a child of the 1990s, I was fortunate to grow up watching some of the absolute greatest animated shows in history, like "Hey Arnold!," "Arthur," and "The Animaniacs." My love of animation is truly lifelong, and thanks to my dad's lifelong love of the "Speed Racer" series, it was encouraged that I watch more than just American-made animation. Fortunately, I was just the right age for the arrival of two of the best anime of all time, "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z." Last month, the Academy Museum launched “Branch Selects,” a series that screens every Tuesday night at the museum with the chosen film highlighting a distinct area of filmmaking.
Bernardo Rondeau, the museum’s senior director of film programs, says the idea came from receiving a lot of recommendations and feedback across the board from its members. “We were trying to figure out a way that we could harness this amazing knowledge and passion for cinema into a program; into a series. The fairest way to do it would be to do what we ended up calling ‘Branch Selects,’” explains Rondeau.
Each branch will select three titles, with one screening each week. “Battleship Potemkin” was the first film to screen at the beginning of the year, and was chosen by the film editors branch. On Tuesday night, the 1941 Orson Welles classic “Citizen Kane,” will screen, chosen by the visual effects branch.

On Tuesday night, the 1941 Orson Welles classic “Citizen Kane,” will screen, chosen by the visual effects branch.

In 2021, Emma Stone wowed Disney fans as she became "Cruella," the iconic "101 Dalmatians" villain who terrified generations of kids in her pursuit of the perfect coat. A style icon, even if she is a bit too fond of puppy genocide, Cruella de Vil is one mean fashion designer, in more ways than one. This campy, stylish origin story was a big hit among fans, with critics praising the edgy crime adventure and cool '70s setting.
Although I originally thought "Cruella" was unnecessarily evil, I have to admit I enjoyed its quirky twist on the classic Disney tale. Taking a peek at Cruella de Vil's...

Marvel fans, prepare to wait a little bit longer to see Doctor Strange, Thor and Black Panther return to theaters.
Disney has delayed release plans for several upcoming films, including “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” from March 25 to May 6, “Thor: Love and Thunder” from May 6 to July 8 and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” from July 8 to Nov. 11. With the “Black Panther” sequel jumping to November, “The Marvels” has been postponed to early 2023 and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was bumped from Feb. 17 to July 28, 2023.
Along with the deluge of Marvel delays, Disney has moved the fifth “Indiana Jones” installment back nearly a year. The still-untitled film, starring Harrison Ford as the fedora-wearing, swashbuckling archaeologist, will open on June 30, 2023 instead of July 29, 2022.
The major release date shuffle comes after Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” cemented its place as a pandemic-era box office hit and ahead of “Eternals,...

In the week that Disney’s “Cruella” was made available for free on Disney+ after previously being a Premier Access title on the streaming service, the movie starring Emma Stone was the third most-streamed title on the web, according to Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings.
Nielsen says that “Cruella” was watched for 815 million viewing minutes in its first week available for free on Disney+, which covers the week of August 23-29. It was the third most-streamed title among all movies and shows and easily topped the list of movies for the week.
“Cruella” did well on Disney+ even when it was available for a $30 charge, remaining among the top 10 movies for five straight weeks, but Nielsen says that back in May it only topped out at 362 million viewing minutes compared to the 815 million it put up in August.

Whether she’s playing a vamp (Dangerous Liaisons), a civil rights champ (Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story), or going camp (101 Dalmatians), Glenn Close always entertains. Here are three of our favorite film performances, all now streaming on Netflix. Agatha Christie’s Crooked House Who killed wealthy tycoon Aristide Leonides? Every member of the family had a motive, including his bitter sister-in-law, Lady Edith de Haviland. Close plays the character with an iciness that induces goosebumps. Air Force One Sure, Harrison Ford’s Potus gets to kick butt at 30,000 feet when terrorists hijack his jet, but it’s Close’s level-headed veep, Kathryn Bennett, who takes command in the situation room, helping guide everyone to a happy ending. (Credit: Lacey Terrell/Netflix © 2020) Hillbilly Elegy Close earned her eighth Oscar nomination for disappearing into the role of impoverished but loving “Mamaw.” She becomes a mother figure for her grandson...

There’s a lot riding on “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the Marvel movie that opens in theaters this weekend, and not because it’s the first installment in the premier film franchise to feature an Asian star and predominately Asian cast.
Though it marks an important step in onscreen representation, “Shang-Chi” will also prove vital in determining the way Disney releases its movies, at least while a pandemic is still raging. The superhero adaptation, starring Simu Liu as the eponymous hero, is the first Marvel movie since Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in July of 2019 to play exclusively in theaters. Since Covid-19 struck and forced movie theaters to close, Disney has put the majority of its new movies — including the Scarlett Johansson-led Marvel entry “Black Widow,” family adventure “Jungle Cruise” and “101 Dalmatians” prequel “Cruella” — Disney Plus under its Premier Access banner, while Pixar...
