Tony Goldwyn is best known as an actor who has starred in films like Ghost (1990) and on TV programs including Scandal (2012-2018). But he has also quietly and consistently built an impressive résumé as a director, with A Walk on the Moon (1999), The Last Kiss (2006), Conviction (2010) and, most recently, Ezra. The dramedy just had its world premiere as a sales title at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it had audiences laughing and crying and has generated raves, especially for the performance of its lead actor, Bobby Cannavale.
Ezra centers on a single father, stand-up comedian Max (Cannavale), who is fiercely protective of his autistic son, Ezra (William Fitzgerald), and winds up taking him on the run rather than allowing him to be sent to a special school and medicated. The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, is currently finishing the restoration of the film, which Cohen Film Group plans to release next year.

Pal Joey, the notoriously tricky Rodgers and Hart musical with a score as lovely as its lead characters are thorny, is heading back to Broadway next year in a newly revised version to be co-directed by Tony Goldwyn and Savion Glover.

Mal Z. Lawrence, whose defiantly old-school Borscht Belt stand-up comedy delighted audiences and happily surprised critics when the Catskills on Broadway revue became a hit in 1991, died Monday at a hospice facility in Delray Beach, Florida. He was 88.
His death was announced to The New York Times by his talent agent Alison Chaplin.
The comedian Marilyn Michaels, who co-starred in Catskills on Broadway, wrote in a Facebook tribute, “The passing of Mal Z Lawrence is cause for great sadness, as he was a terrific talent and a very funny guy.. A true Bon Vivant. Attention must be paid! …Rip Mal Z.. you are making the angels laugh.”

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
No sooner had the Emmys ended with a disappointing night Sunday for Netflix after a record-breaking 160 nominations (and 21 wins), the streamer is turning its sights bigly to Oscar season. If the launch of their series of daily new Netflix Screening Room entries with Aaron Sorkin’s triumphant The Trial of the Chicago 7 is any indication of what it has in store, then Netflix is going to have a much better night at the Oscars come Sunday, April 25. This could be its year.
Netflix actually has the most impressive lineup of films for this season, better than any other distributor (at least on paper), and just in sheer volume it promises to overwhelm the competition. This is especially apparent as other expected films with big awards ambitions seem to be falling by the wayside, as witnessed just today with the...

Over the Moon, an animated feature heads to Netflix in October, showcasing an aesthetically impressive, awe-inspiring tale of wonder and randomly-erupting musical sequences that’s out to prove that Disney+ isn’t the only place on which its genre flourishes.
The film focuses on the exploits of a young Asian-American girl, who—having been entranced by a myth about a goddess who accidentally floated away from her true love to be exiled on the moon—embarks on a cosmic endeavor of building a rocket for a lunar visit of her own. Despite the problematic practicalities of its plot mechanics, Over the Moon appears destined to become a family-aimed crowd-pleaser, and also serves as valuable representation for a demographic that’s infrequently set in a protagonist capacity in Western features.

The estate for Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is suing Netflix and several other parties involved in the upcoming film “Enola Holmes,” for copyright infringement and trademark problems with a project about the detective’s sister.
In a suit filed on Tuesday in New Mexico, the Conan Doyle Estate is also taking aim at Legendary Pictures, Penguin Random House, and author Nancy Springer whose book series inspired the “Enola Holmes” film that will star Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”). Director Harry Bradbeer, screenwriter Jack Thorne, Pcma Management and Productions and Eh Productions UK are also named in the lawsuit.
The copyright violation mentioned in the lawsuit stems from an “unauthorized copying of original creative expression by (Doyle) in copyrighted Sherlock Holmes stories.” While Doyle’s pre-1923 work is now in the public domain, his last 10 stories, from 1923 to 1927, are still controlled by his estate. Animated children’s films have proven incredibly popular on Netflix. Earlier this year, Despicable Me was added and quickly shot to the top of the most-viewed charts, with parents hungry for stuff to entertain the young ones with. As such, they’re now pouring more funds into original children’s entertainment, with the next big release being Over the Moon.
The movie tells the story of a young girl determined to reach the moon in order to meet a legendary Moon Goddess, constructing a rocket ship and launching herself into space. And judging by the trailer above, Netflix is aiming to match the visual and storytelling style of Disney and Pixar. They’re going to be helped in that by the direction of Glen Keane, who has supervising animator credits on a bevy of Disney classics, including Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan and Tangled.

The first look at upcoming animated film Over the Moon shows that flights of fancy into space are not necessarily reserved for White people. Directed by Glen Keane, whose career in animation dates back to the 1970s and who won an Academy Award for his short film Dear Basketball, Over the Moon is co-directed by John Kahrs, who won an Academy Award for his short film Paperman, and scripted by the late Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give). If you watch the trailer for “Over the Moon” and don’t know anything about the film, it’s likely you’d think you’re seeing the latest Disney animated film. The animation is beautiful, it’s a musical, and one of the lead character’s parents dies. All the tell-tale signs of a Disney film. But “Over the Moon” isn’t a Disney film, instead arriving on Netflix, but it still looks pretty great.

Netflix dropped the first trailer Tuesday for its upcoming animated feature, “Over the Moon” (coming in the fall), a wondrous update of the Chinese Moon Goddess fable, directed by former Disney legend and Oscar winner Glen Keane (“Dear Basketball”). The co-production with Pearl Studio (“Abominable”) was animated at Sony Pictures Imageworks, with Oscar winner John Kahrs serving as co-director, Oscar winner Gennie Rim (“Dear Basketball”) producing with Pearl’s Peilin Chou.
In “Over the Moon” (scripted by the late Audrey Wells of “The Hate U Give”), 13-year-old Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket to the moon to meet the legendary goddess, Chang’e (Phillipa Soo of “Moana” and “Hamilton”). But her journey on Lunaria (production designed by Céline Desrumaux of “The Little Prince”) forces her to embrace change. Original songs were composed by Christopher Curtis (“Chaplin: The Musica”), Marjorie Duffield, and Helen Park (“Kpop”), and the score was by “Gravity” Oscar winner Steven Price.

Netflix and Pearl Studio unveiled the first trailer for their animated film “Over the Moon” on Tuesday following a virtual discussion with some of the cast and crew about the pic last week. Actors Sandra Oh, Phillipa Soo, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles and newcomer Cathy Ang joined producers Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou, along with director Glen Keane, to discuss the making of the movie, a musical adventure about a young Chinese girl named Fei Fei (Ang), who builds her own rocket ship to travel to the moon in order to prove the existence of the legendary Moon goddess Chang’e (Soo).
Soo, a Tony Award nominee for her work in “Hamilton,” noted that she has known about the story of Chang’e since childhood, through a children’s book written by Amy Tan. “I remember as a kid, asking my dad to read it over and over and over to me.

Netflix will not run out of new original content anytime soon despite the industry-wide production shutdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We work really far out relative to the industry, because we launch our shows all episodes at once. We’re working far out all over the world, so our 2020 slate of series and films are largely shot and are in post-production remotely,” Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said during Netflix’s earnings call on Tuesday. “We’re actually pretty deep into our 2021 slate. So we don’t anticipate moving things around.”
Sarandos specifically cited the fourth season of “The Crown” and the animated film “Over the Moon” as upcoming content that will not see their premiere dates delayed, an issue that has challenged many TV networks and film studios. “These are shot productions and in finishing stages right now to release later this year as planned,” he said. “We...

Taika Waititi is partnering with Netflix on a pair of animated series — one based on the world of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and another based on the Oompa-Loompa characters.
Waititi, who won an Academy Award for the “Jojo Rabbit” adapted screenplay, will write, direct, and executive produce both projects. The two “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movies were based on the 1964 children’s novel by Roald Dahl about the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of Willy Wonka.
The Oompa-Loompas are small humans who were preyed upon in Loompaland before Wonka invited them to work at his factory. They are paid in cocoa beans and are also mischievous, loving practical jokes and singing songs.

In the wake of winning the best adapated screenplay Oscar for Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi is attached to write, direct, and executive produce two original animated series for Netflix based off Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The first will be based on that book’s characters, and the second is a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas. While capturing the spirit of Dahl’s book, both series will build out the world beyond the author’s pages.
Waititi’s boarding these two series reps the start of an extensive partnership between Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company, which plans to reimagine many of his beloved stories including Matilda, The Bfg, The Twits, and others. This time however he is adding director and screenwriter to his resume, with his behind the camera debut, Falling, which is set to officially close the festival and is part of the Premieres section but will start screening on Friday. Netflix plans to keep revving up its movie slate in the coming year, although the volume of new releases will grow at a steadier pace following the ramp-up of the past 18 months, Netflix executives told investors Tuesday in discussing the company’s Q4 2019 earnings.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, and Netflix chief Reed Hastings told investors during the company’s quarterly earnings interview with Michael Morris of Guggenheim Securities, that being a contender in awards season is very much part of the business model. Netflix led all studios in Oscar nominations this year with a total of 24 bids, paced by Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” (10) and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” (six).
“It’s exciting that we ended up being the most-nominated studio at the Oscars with those films. The most exciting thing is those films are all incredibly popular with our members as well,” Sarandos said.

With “I Lost My Body,” the bold French existential mystery about a severed hand, and “Klaus,” the innovative 2D Santa origin story, Netflix powered its way into the Best Animated Feature Oscar race for the first time. It knocked out Disney’s mighty “Frozen II” and halted GKids’ six-year run of eight nominations.
Netflix proved that its now an indie animation force to be reckoned with, and this year will contend with Aardman’s stop-motion sequel, “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (February 14th), “Over the Moon” (a fall release from former Disney legend Glen Keane), and the quirky CG comedy, “The Willoughbys” (an April release).
However, the competition is formidable: Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” finale, and Laika’s fifth stop-motion nominee, “Missing Link.” That breaks down to three indies and two studio entries, along with three originals and two sequels.

If you’re not already, Hulu should get you in the summer mood with its June releases. Go to summer camp with the slasher flick “Friday the 13th” — and seven sequels. Listen to the breezy tune “Stuck in the Middle With You” from “Reservoir Dogs.” Compare thee to a summer’s day with “Shakespeare in Love” and “Hamlet.” Go surfing with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze with “Point Break.” Or if for some reason summer is getting you in a nihilistic mood, go on a Bret Easton Ellis binge with “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero.”
And if that wasn’t enough, Hulu is bringing back its original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a third season.

After more than 40 years in the spotlight, the actor is about to be more prominent than ever, starring in the final season of House of Cards
After more than 40 years as an actor, Diane Lane is thankful for one thing: her scripts no longer routinely include the line: “He’ll kill us if he finds us!” At one point in her career, she laughs, three of her characters were called on to say just that. “I don’t ever want to say that again, because it’s always coming from this ‘clandestine-affair woman’.”
That’s just one of the female archetypes Lane has played among more than 70 roles to date, which have taken in films for directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Richard Attenborough. She played angsty teens in The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, before graduating to action-star sidekicks in Judge Dredd and Murder at 1600, big-star love interests in The Perfect Storm and Hardball,...

It's been a long time coming, but House of Cards is really returning for Season 6, and there will be some new additions to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear have joined the cast of the series as production resumes on its last-ever season.
Production was initially shut down back in October when series star, Kevin Spacey was fired in the aftermath of a string of allegations of sexual assault and harassment against him.
Given that Netflix and Media Rights Capital severed ties with Spacey, the fate of the series was up in the air for some time as investigations continued.
