There really isn’t a genre, or more so a movement, within the history of cinema that is quite like Film Noir. Best known for inky black and white photography, rain soaked urban landscapes and men in fedoras being thrust into turmoil by beautiful women with not the best of intentions, Film Noir burst out of post war angst in the early 1940s, and has since become home to some of the most original and vital motion pictures within cinema. Films like Rian Johnson’s Brick have helped evolve this movement into something more than just a fancy name for films involving private investigators. Who would have thought there would be a luchador wrestling noir?
That’s exactly what Arturo Ripstein’s Bleak Street is, or at least in its broadest form. Thrusting us into the seedy underbelly of Mexico City and the world of luchador wrestling, Bleak Street is...

Bleak Street, the very appropriately named new film from veteran Mexican director Arturo Ripstein, is ripped from the headlines, much like the TV show "Law and Order." Inspired by the double murder of two dwarf men who were popular luchadores (masked wrestlers), Bleak Street paints a vivid picture of the desperate characters who play out their quietly hellish existences in the titular location. Filmed in stark monochrome, it evokes both Fellini and Bunuel in both its intimations of a dark carnival and its biting social commentary, touched with a pronounced sense of the absurd. The lucha libre performers of this story are Little Death (Juan Francisco Longoria) and Little Ak (Guillermo Lopez), twin brothers who wrestle as miniature mascot versions of the normal-sized wrestlers Death and...

Deluxe Australia today launched the Deluxe Heartbeat Fund, which encompasses and extends the company.s industry support programs.
One of the key aims of the Heartbeat Fund is help filmmakers articulate a clear vision of their target audience at the outset, and execute accordingly.

Deluxe MD Alaric McAusland told If. .We want to work with filmmakers on features where they have a clear vision of audience engagement and that.s built in as an integral part of the budget at the start, not as an after-thought.
.The Australian film label is a disincentive for some audiences; our films used to be cool. We are at a tipping point..

Magnolia Pictures has acquired Us rights to The Little Death, the sex comedy which marks Josh Lawson.s feature directing and writing debut.
That.s Magnolia.s second Oz pick-up this week following the deal for Kriv Stenders. comedy-thriller Kill Me Three Times.
.The Little Death is a terrifically funny film that elegantly walks the line between a shockingly funny sex humour and a warmly affectionate look at adult relationships,. said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles, who plans a 2015 release.
Producer Jamie Hilton told If, "We're so excited to be releasing under the Magnolia banner in the Us, they are the perfect fit for our film. LevelK has done a great job on the international sales front, working with UTA on the Us deal. It's amazing to think that audiences in almost every country will be able to see this film in theatres; I just hope they like sex as much as we Australians.

Josh Lawson.s feature directing and writing debut on The Little Death could not be more promising as the sex comedy has been snapped up by distributors in Europe and Taiwan.
International sales agent LevelK clinched numerous deals, with others including the Us in negotiation, after the film.s North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Wild Bunch acquired the rights for France and Spain, WeltKino bought the German-speaking territories and Kaleidoscope will release in the UK. Seven Films collared the rights for Greece and Joint Entertainment took Taiwan.
An expose of the secret lives of five suburban couples in Sydney, its ensemble cast includes Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman, Kate Mulvany, Lisa McCune, Patrick Brammall, Lachy Hulme and Lawson.

Exclusive: In a bid to drive acquisitions, Toronto top brass are understood to be collaborating with select sales agents to allow festival staff and volunteers to attend four early-stage private buyers screenings.
Screendaily has learned the move is being orchestrated to replicate the buoyant atmosphere of public screenings in an effort to stir up sales.
The timing of the move is dictated by a growing recognition that most decision-makers at distribution companies will have left town by the time these films officially premiere in the second week, despite Toronto’s efforts to spread its riches across the duration of the festival.
That strategy was informed in part by the festival’s new and well documented policy of holding back until the second week premieres of anticipated films that will receive their actual world premiere in Telluride.
Two cases in point are North American premieres of The Weinstein Company’s Benedict Cumberbatch starrer The Imitation Game and Fox...

Let What is Broken So Remain: McGuiness’ Debut Familiar, Mesmerizing
“Ah, why should life all labor be?” asks Lord Alfred Tennyson in a line from his poem, The Lotus-Eaters, with which Alexandra McGuiness’ film debut shares its title. First referenced as the main source of food for sleepy island dwelling folk in Homer’s Odyssey, the lotus is a fruit and a flower that acts like a narcotic when consumed. It’s a fitting allusion for a film that deals with a posh group of London twentysomethings hollowly attending endless parties together as they apathetically pursue glamorously impenetrable careers.
Alice (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) suspects that she’s getting a titch too old to continue pursuing her career as model, and thus sets her sights on the next best thing—acting. She’s not quite over the break-up with her ex, Charlie (Johnny Flynn), who is addicted to heroin and rather self-involved...

Just because I gave you the best dozen first, don't think that Part 2 can be skipped. Albums 13-25 get more interesting, because they're less obvious choices.
13. Chris Smither: Hundred Dollar Valentine (Signature Sounds)
Veteran folkie with bluesy leanings makes yet another superb album, for the first time using only his own songs. Review here.
14. Raymond Byron and the White Freighter: Little Death Shaker (Asthmatic Kitty)
Castanets frontman's more rockin' project still plumbs emotional depths. Review here.
15. Kathleen Edwards: Voyageur (Zoe/New Rounder/Concord)
"[M]oodily bittersweet songs with catchy melodies, sung with tightly coiled intensity by a woman with a haunting voice." Review here.
16. Grizzly Bear: Shields (Warp)
Brooklyn favorites who went national a few years ago follow up not by playing it safe, but by using an edgier production style that retains their strengths while providing more challenging and compelling listening.

Raymond Byron and the White Freighter
Little Death Shaker (Asthmatic Kitty)
Raymond Byron = Ray Raposa of Castanets. The press release goes to great lengths to differentiate this new project from Castanets, however. Some of that is justified. It often rocks more than Castanets. It includes two covers, Dan Reeder's tragicomic "You'll Never Surf Again" and folk legend Kate Wolf's "You're Not Standing Like You Used To" (no Castanets LP has any covers). There's also a little more use of clearly delineated narrative than in the past.
But some participants, including singers Talia Gordon (who takes the lead on the Wolf cover) and Bridget Jacobson, were also Castanets collaborators, and there are several tracks, such as "Don't That Lake Just Shine," which would have sounded perfectly at home on the most recent Castanets album. And, falling between those two approaches, some songs are quiet at the start (thus sounding more like...

As editor of The Best American Erotica series and host of the weekly audio show In Bed with Susie Bright on Audible.com, Susie Bright has never been one to shy away from discussing sexuality, erotica, and feminism, becoming one of America’s leading “sexperts.” In her new book, Big Sex Little Death: A Memoir (Seal Press/Audible), Bright traces her entertaining and influential political/sexual revolution—from a fearsome Irish Catholic Girl Scout to teenage radical in The Red Tide and International Socialists to co-founder of On Our Backs, the first erotic magazine created by women. Below, Bright describes her fortuitous move from San Francisco to teach “an extended version of erotic forensics” at Uc Santa Cruz. Listen to the podcast after the jump.
