If you thought the twisted characters in Game of Thrones, which were adapted from George R.R. Martin’s acclaimed novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, were the epitome of evil, think again.
Martin, the mastermind behind the beloved and brutal fantasy series, once took to his personal blog to give his thoughts on the Emmy-worthy performance of Breaking Bad’s Ozymandias episode. And let’s just say he was just so impressed that, according to him, the episode was the ante in the realm of television monsters.

Martin lauded Breaking Bad and its protagonist, Walter White, as a greater monster than anyone in Westeros. Yes, you read that right. The man who created terrifying characters such as Ramsay Bolton and Joffrey Baratheon acknowledged that there is one supervillain who surpasses them all.

Not many shows avoided controversy and appeased mass audiences quite like Friends. Thirty years after its premiere, however, our perception of the series has evolved.
Some say that the show used jokes that capitalized on the intolerant views of the 1990s without any regard for actual wit or intelligence. Others claim that the NBC megahit emulated other better programs, such as Living Single, profiting off of superior greatness without ever crediting its inspiration. No matter what anyone thinks of this David Crane and Marta Kauffman-created series, Friends remains the most culturally relevant sitcom of its era.
Its themes and comfy aesthetics continue to engulf young and old viewers alike in a cozy realm of immature banter and authentic bonding, both platonic and romantic. The show gets millions of views monthly in cable syndication and streaming, making it a beloved fixture of the television zeitgeist a quarter into the 21st century.

Anyone But You is getting a lot of attention from fans and especially industry specialists who are now just finding out that rom-coms can still make money at the box office. While the raunchy romantic comedy by the director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) isn’t exactly a masterpiece or an instant classic, it gives the viewers some much-deserved escape and a fun story, that they don’t have to wear 3D glasses for.
Starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anyone But You revolves around Ben and Bea, who meet each other by chance and have an amazing first date unfortunately that doesn’t last long, and both of them part ways but the kicker comes when after some time both of them unexpectedly find themselves at a destination wedding in Australia, and because of unexpected circumstances they decide to pretend to be a couple.

A bearded geek with glasses and a funny cap created the main fantasy saga of the 21st century, which approached the level of cult status of The Lord of the Rings. George R.R. Martin himself has always been a huge fan of J. R.R. Tolkien.
However, he draws inspiration not only from the pages of dusty fantasy novels, but also from movies and TV series. Martin, a screenwriter himself, wrote several episodes for The Twilight Zone in the 1980s, and the number of his unrealized TV projects is simply too many to count.
George R.R. Praises Six Feet Under’s Finale
Martin shared his favorite TV episodes on his blog, and the drama Six Feet Under, it’s final episode in particular, received special praise:
“[…] that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.

When "Six Feet Under" came to Netflix in November 2023, I was eager to finally watch one of HBO's finest television shows. My father passed away in September, and while binging this series so soon after his death might seem like a masochistic endeavor, it was quite healing. One of the few things I knew about "Six Feet Under" was that many critics and audiences consider the final episode the greatest television ending of all time. As George R. R. Martin told Variety, "[T]hat last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better." Empire's review called it "almost unbearably moving and thrillingly executed."

Jerry Seinfeld is still bothered “a little bit” by how “Seinfeld” ended. Let’s just say, it wasn’t as cinematic as his favorite finale ever: “Mad Men.”
Seinfeld, who makes his directorial debut with upcoming Netflix film “Unfrosted,” told GQ that while he doesn’t “believe in regret,” he couldn’t help but compare the “Seinfeld” finale to the “greatest” series finale of all-time with Emmy-winning AMC’s “Mad Men.”
“I feel ‘Mad Men’ was the greatest,” Seinfeld said. “A lot of people like the ‘Bob Newhart’ one. ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ was Ok. ‘Mad Men’ was the greatest final moment of a series I’ve ever seen. So satisfying. So funny.”
During the recent series finale of Larry David’s long-running meta HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” David and Seinfeld reunite onscreen to revisit the controversial “Seinfeld” final moments with the stand-up comic ending up in jail.

Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.
Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

New data from Ampere Analysis shows how much HBO titles like ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Insecure’ have risen in popularity since becoming available on Netflix.
It’s been nearly a year since reports first surfaced that Warner Bros. Discovery was in talks with Netflix to send some HBO original titles to stream on that platform, while at the same time remaining on Wbd’s platform Max. At the time the move was considered somewhat controversial, as the prevailing wisdom at the time held that media companies should keep their prized content in order to draw viewers to their own services. But months after the licensing deal between HBO and Netflix became official, new data from Ampere Analysis shows that many HBO shows doubled in popularity after being sent to stream on Netflix.
“Ballers” saw the biggest jump in relative popularity, quadrupling its score in the month after its Netflix premiere.

Judd Apatow spoke to Vulture in a recent interview about the current state of television, including why the trend of rewatching older series and licensing pacts between streamers is “scary.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. I understand why people like the comfort food of television. But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back “Barnaby Jones.”‘ They’re going to do it, then you’ll get fewer new shows.”
The “This Is 40” writer-director continued, “They realize, Oh wait, Netflix can just buy shows from HBO, and I would assume they’re cheaper than making new ones.

January 10, 1999 marked the premiere of the HBO drama series The Sopranos, which took the high concept of a detailed glimpse into the modern mafia and ran with it, offering audiences a very adult, complex, and mature show that far surpassed its initial hook. But while The Sopranos kicked off the era of antihero TV, it took a few more years for other series to truly grab the baton from Tony Soprano. Within the world of HBO, though some other dramas would peer into other worlds of Americana, from the carnies of Carnivàle to the disaffected funeral-home employees of Six Feet Under, the most memorable and arguably the best of antihero TV arrived on TV in March of 2004, in the form of Deadwood.

The 60th Cinema Audio Society Awards named Universal’s Oppenheimer the winner of its marquee Live Action Motion Picture category Saturday at its annual ceremony honoring the year’s best in feature film and TV sound mixing.
The victory gives the Christopher Nolan epic about the creator of the atomic bomb a leg up leading into the Oscars; it is nominated in Sound category among its leading 13 overall nominations.
This year’s marquee Cas Live Action Motion Picture category featured sound artisans from two of the five of this year’s Best Sound Oscar nominees in Oppenheimer and Netflix’s Maestro. They were joined in tonight’s race by Warner Bros’ Barbie, Neon’s Ferrari and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

All six seasons of the hit HBO series, which have previously only been available on Max, will now be streaming on Netflix for the first time starting April 1 (Satc will still be available on HBO’s streaming service as well).
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery made a content agreement with Netflix last July, which included a licensing deal for several series. Other shows that were part of the deal included Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Ballers, Insecure and True Blood.
In less than one month, all 94 episodes of the original hit show, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, will hit Netflix. It’s not an April Fool’s joke – Sex and the City is bowing on Netflix on April 1.
The series is one of HBO’s most important library titles and has a modern spinoff series in And Just Like That… The latter remains exclusive to Max.
Deadline revealed last June that Warner Bros. Discovery struck a deal to license a number of titles to Netflix, including Insecure, Ballers, and Six Feet Under.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has signaled that he is looking for more licensed content.
“I believe because of our distribution heft and our recommendation system that sometimes we can uniquely add more value to the studio’s IP than they can,” Sarandos told investors last year. “Not all the time, but sometimes it does, and we are the best buyer for it. I am thrilled that the studios are more open to licensing again, and I’m thrilled...

Netflix is getting into the medical procedural space, with the streamer announcing a pickup for the drama “Pulse.”
The series hails from creator Zoe Robyn, who will also serve as co-showrunner alongside Carlton Cuse. In addition, Justina Machado has been cast in a series regular role.
The official logline for the series states, “While the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center navigate medical emergencies, young ER doc Dani Simms is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship.”
Machado will star as Natalie Cruz, described as “a brilliant and politically-savvy doctor, who oversees both administration and medicine in her role as the Chair of Surgery and Emergency Medicine.”
Both Robyn and Cuse also serve as executive producers on the series. Kate Dennis will serve as director and executive producer on the show’s first two episodes. Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman, and Michael Klick also executive produce.

It’s the end of a villainous era for soap star Kimberlin Brown.
Brown’s notorious character Sheila Carter was killed off in Monday’s episode of The Bold and the Beautiful. She no doubt had it coming; Sheila’s been the epitome of evil since her character was first introduced on The Young and the Restless in 1990. She moved over to B&b in 1992 where she’s been wreaking havoc ever since.
The character’s death on Monday was at the hands of Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood).
“Well, you know, it’s a tough place for me to be in right now; I’m not going to lie about this,” Brown told TV Insider. “I guess if anyone were going to take Sheila down, I’m happy it’s Steffy. I just wish that no one was taking Sheila down. It’s my happy place where I have been...

Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Despite its actors dominating recent awards shows like the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, “Succession” ended its run at Saturday’s SAG Awards having never won an individual trophy. (See the SAG winner’s list.) Four of its actors were nominated for this fourth and final season: Sarah Snook (as Shiv Roy) for best drama actress, and Brian Cox (as Logan Roy), Kieran Culkin (as Roman Roy) and Matthew Macfadyen (as Tom Wambsgans) for best drama actor. But they ended up losing to Elizabeth Debicki ( as Princess Diana) of “The Crown” and Pedro Pascal (as Joel) on “The Last of Us,” respectively. Not to be outdone, the “Succession” cast still did win the drama ensemble prize for the second time at the end of the night.

Four episodes into its six-episode run, True Detective: Night Country has become the most watched season of the crime anthology series with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, surpassing the 11.9 million viewer average for the original True Detective installment.
A lot has changed since True Detective starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson ran in 2014, breaking records as the most watched freshman season of an HBO series since Six Feet Under.
The bulk of viewing at the time was done on linear/delayed viewing with the now defunct HBO Go as the only streaming option. (It crashed under demand the night of the season finale.) In Live+Same Day, that season drew 2.3M-3.5M viewers for the premiere telecast on HBO.
For Night Country, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, most of the consumption is done on Max, with a fraction of the viewers, 0.6M-0.7M, coming from the original HBO telecast.

FX CEO John Landgraf, fresh off revealing a 14 percent decline in the volume of scripted originals and saying “adios” to Peak TV, can pinpoint the moment the bubble burst.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the always insightful 20-year FX executive also maps out a vision of the future as he does his best to forecast what will stop the TV industry’s contraction that prompted the number of U.S.-produced scripted series to decline more in the past year than the decade prior.
You mentioned at TCA that the contraction started well before last year’s dual strikes. What do you think the turning point was?
Landgraf: The inflection point was when Netflix decided to change their public-facing Wall Street metric from global subscribers and Arpu [average revenue per user] to profit. I think they did that because they were ahead of everyone else and it was to their advantage to...

Tokyo Vice is back from quite a lengthy hiatus. And despite the nearly two-year gap between seasons — one that saw a full rebrand for streamer Max — things pick up pretty much exactly where they left off.
Series executive producer and director Alan Poul, who helmed the first two episodes, suggests the handling of the pair will probably soften the blow for viewers. “The premiere is like episode nine of season one, a direct continuation,” Poul says of the two-part Feb. 8 premiere. “The second episode is really the start of the new storylines.”
Tokyo Vice has been a bizarre culmination of interests for Poul. It’s been nearly two years since the premiere of “Tokyo Vice,” in which director Michael Mann introduced us to yet another lonely male obsessive. As the sole Caucasian employee of Tokyo’s largest newspaper, Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) — a real-life journalist and executive producer of the show, which is loosely based on his memoir of the same name — stood out like a sore thumb. He also acted as a Virgil guiding American viewers through the Japanese underworld at the turn of the millennium. Jake investigates organized crime via an informal partnership with Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), a policeman who doesn’t fight the yakuza so much as help preserve the equilibrium among their competing factions. Samantha (Rachel Keller), a Mormon missionary turned apostate, served a similar purpose to Jake, but as a guide to hostess bars, a source of paid yet strictly nonsexual company unfamiliar to Westerners.

The runaway success of Suits on Netflix in 2023 gave the show the biggest year ever in the short history of streaming viewing measurement. It also headlined a banner year for library series (aka shows that ended their run years ago) across a number of platforms: The top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.
Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). Wbd CEO David Zaslav finds himself in a precarious position as he tries to strike a balance in licensing content from his streaming platform.
Despite financial improvements at Warner Bros. ‘Suits’ was the top acquired streaming program of the year, with more than 57 billion minutes streamed on Netflix and Peacock.
A lot happened in the streaming world in 2023. A shift in priorities took hold across the industry, as streaming providers realized they must figure out how to become profitable — and fast — to rehabilitate their stock prices. All of that happened against the backdrop of strikes by Hollywood’s largest writer and actor unions, and both of those factors combined to aid the rise of a potent programming segment: acquired content. After a record-breaking run atop the streaming charts in the summer and fall, Suits can claim one more milestone at the end of 2023: It’s the most-streamed show over the course of a year in the (admittedly brief) history of Nielsen’s rankings.

"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.

Licensing is what allowed Netflix to grow into the largest streaming service in the world, and the company is looking to invest heavily in it again.
Netflix built its throne as the largest streaming service in the world primarily on its reputation of being the central hub where you could find all of the TV shows and movies that you could ever hope to watch. However, as the service grew and became an increasingly powerful player in the entertainment world, fewer and fewer competing media companies were willing to part with their content as they were afraid that it would only increase Netflix’s dominance in the burgeoning streaming space. However, now that streaming has settled into an era where growth is important, but no longer the primary measure of success, an increasing number of studios have been willing to return to or increase their licensing deals with Netflix.

And just like that, one of HBO’s most iconic hits is heading over to its biggest streaming rival.
All six seasons of the Emmy-winning comedy Sex and the City are going to stream on Netflix for the first time. The show will reportedly be added to the platform in April as a co-exclusive with Max (so Satc will still be available on HBO’s streaming service as well).
The licensing deal is part of a content agreement that HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery made with Netflix last July, but Satc was not originally announced as part of that package.
While Netflix is getting all 94 episodes of the original show — which launched in 1998 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall as four friends in New York City — the streamer is not getting the Sex and the City movies or its current sequel series, And Just Like That (at least,...

Carrie Bradshaw and the rest of the “Sex and the City” coterie are heading to a binge-watching date on Netflix.
Netflix has inked a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to license all six seasons of the popular HBO dramedy, comprising all 94 episodes, Variety confirmed. “Sex and the City” will land on Netflix in early April 2024.
The deal is not worldwide: The series will be available in the U.S. and several other European markets, sources familiar with the pact said. In addition, the deal does not include the two “Satc” feature-length films, nor does it include the recent spin-off “And Just Like That,” which is currently streaming only on Wbd’s Max.
In “Sex and the City,” which originally aired on HBO from 1998-2004, Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Bradshaw, a New York writer who “finds inspiration for her column from the genuine, emotional and often humorous exploits of her friends and lovers.

Updated: And just like that, Netflix is close to tying up another major content licensing deal.
Netflix will start streaming Sex and the City as early as April after reaching an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, Deadline has confirmed.
A deal for Sex and the City would be a major coup for Netflix. It is one of HBO’s most important library titles and has a modern spinoff series in the shape of And Just Like That… The latter is set to remain exclusive to Max.
For Netflix, these licensing deals can unlock old titles to many millions of its members, as was seen with Suits, which became the hottest show of last summer. For Warner Bros. Discovery, licensing is increasingly seen as a way of sweating its assets as Netflix cements its dominance in the streaming game.
