Joe Cornet and Alexander Nevsky‘s action packed western Gunfight at Rio Bravo was released in the US by Shout! Studios back in January and is available on all of the major digital platforms. The sequel Taken from Rio Bravo was shot in Arizona last summer and is now in the final stages of post-production – and the project went over so well when it was presented to international distributors at the Cannes Film Festival last month, Cornet and Nevsky have announced that they’re putting another sequel on the fast track to production! This one will be titled The Last Heroes of Rio Bravo, and filming is scheduled to begin in August.
Cornet will be directing The Last Heroes of Rio Bravo from a screenplay by Craig Hamann, who also wrote the previous two films and crafted the stories with Nevsky. A plot synopsis for the third entry in the...

D.L. Hughley has a lot on his mind. The actor and comedian, who’s known for sharing his unfiltered opinions on social media, now has a late-night platform, and he’s not holding back.

"Don't squander this opportunity." HBO Documentaries has premiered a trailer for a new doc titled Rock and a Hard Place, featuring Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as "The Rock") sharing his experiences with a program he supports. Johnson tells about his own experiences with the law as a youth, and meets some of the kids currently enrolled in a one-of-a-kind boot camp program for incarcerated youth. This looks like a powerful, and hopefully inspiring, follow-up to Ava DuVernay's incredible documentary 13th - which touches on the troubles with the modern prison system. It looks like Johnson only comes in for a talk once, but maybe he is more prominent in the actual doc itself. I'm curious about seeing this. Check out the trailer. Here's the official trailer for Jon Alpert & Matthew O'Neill's doc Rock and a Hard Place, from YouTube: Inspired by Dwayne Johnson's own experiences with the law as a youth,...

Hooking up with The Rock to produce a mock mini-musical about millennials isn’t the only thing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s been up to on YouTube. The creator of the mega-hit Broadway musical Hamilton will be live streaming a live performance of The Hamilton Mixtape on the world’s largest video sharing site, too.
The hip hop musical centered around Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers of the United States immediately pre and post-Revolutionary War has seen unprecedented acclaim and sustained success since its Broadway debut at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in August 2015. (Just last week for instance, the show had its highest-grossing seven-day stretch yet, tallying up over $3.2 million in ticket sales.) And because of that white hot reception, Miranda decided to remix the musical’s soundtrack with several of the rap, hip hop, pop, and indie music scenes biggest stars.

There are good Arnold movies. There are bad Arnold movies. Then there are the Arnold comedies. As a mild career revitalization, Arnold Schwarzenegger became a comedic lead in the '90s, headlining yuk fests of sorts like Twins, Jingle All the Way, Junior and Kindergarten Cop. As Hollywood has started making their way remaking, rebooting or sequelizing Arnold's past projects, it looks like the comedies are next in line, with a remake of Kindergarten Cop in the works. And maybe a TV series too. Unlike most of these reports, we do know whose on board to write and direct this new project. Don Michael Paul, an actor who also helmed hits like Half Past Dead, Who's Your Caddy and Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, will direct, and he works from a screenplay by American Pie writer David H. Steinberg. It should be noted this production comes from Universal's 1440 Entertainment,...

Some years are just great for certain genres, and this year was a great one for action. All across the board were films within different subgenres stepping up and delivering great action set pieces and characters. Consider the shot on the revolving tank gun revealing the totality of carnage in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, or the tight line between insanity and sharp focus with the home invasion scene in The Guest, the shot of Chris Evans plowing through several baddies with an axe in slow motion during Snowpiercer, watching Keanu Reeves dispatching thugs with slick gun-fu in John Wick, or literally any scene from the action opera The Raid 2. Take all that together in the same year (!!!!) and it’s clear to see we’ve been spoiled.
But all that aside, only one person can take the title of 2014’s Action Hero. Action Heroes are like Highlanders,...

Steven Seagal has joined the cast of the $25 million-budget action thriller "Cypher" at Aldamisa International.
Seagal penned the script and will portray a special forces operative who, frustrated with the bureaucracy of war, goes rogue and tries to exterminate terrorists being protected by the government.
No director is yet attached. Sergei Bespalev and Seagal are producing with filming to begin in April.
The plan is to go theatrical with the film which, aside from his appearances in the "Machete" films, would mark the first Seagal project to do so since 2002's "Half Past Dead".

The TV spots put the spotlight on Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and while they each contain some great new footage of CGI characters Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel), it’s the former WWE Superstar who steals the show.
How? Well, we get a good look here at Bautista’s deadpan humour as Drax and though many scoff at the acting abilities of a wrestler (despite The Rock’s success), there’s a chance that the man known as “The Animal” could steal the show here!

Kick the holiday blues and start off the new year with a bang with one of Hollywood’s greatest action heroes!
The holiday season is supposed to be a joyous time, even for those who don’t celebrate any particular holiday. It’s a time when we are all reminded to be a little kinder, a little gentler, a little more filled with the spirit of giving. But, the sluggish traffic, packed store aisles, and constant cacophony of carols and jingles during the holiday season is enough to make even the most festive among us get a little stressed out. If you’re feeling that way, even if only a little, we have the cure for you: eight hours of finger-breaking, head-smashing, body-cleaving, shotgun-blasting action from Hollywood’s hardest zen warrior, Steven Seagal!

Try as it might it seems that Hollywood just can’t come up with a credible new generation of action heroes to rival the living gods of old. Sure we have stars like Jason Statham and The Rock doing their best to fly the old school action flag, but in an era loaded with expensive comic book movies and special effect filled blockbusters a meat and potatoes action film is becoming a rare thing. Yet many filmgoers still long for the olden days of one man armies like Steven Seagal or Charles Bronson taking on all comers while barely breaking a sweet and looking mighty cool doing it.
That’s why in recent years we’ve seen the rise of films like The Expendables and Taken, where the stars maybe well into their fifties and beyond, but you can still completely buy that they could kick your ass. These are men.

“What’s your favourite Lake Placid film?”
You’d be surprised at how many conversations don’t start this way. It’s not for a lack of trying on my part, but it’s a question that seems to bring an awkward air to interactions and induce a strange, saddening silence. I think the problem is that when people think of the Lake Placid films, they think of one complete narrative, rather than four separate films. When asked to consider them as individual entities, they become confused and don’t know how to respond.
Or it could be that most people have only heard of the first one. It’s difficult to know.

When it comes to reviewing a Part 4, I often like to start out with a quick and hopefully helpful little "franchise history lesson," just to bring everyone up to speed -- but is that really necessary at this point? Probably not. What was once a strange but amusing little matinee movie from a well-known TV producer has (somehow, slowly) turned into a cable TV sequel franchise that exists for nothing more than to fill a random Saturday night slot with a lot of silliness and a bunch of crocodile madness. Congrats to the goofily-named Lake Placid 4: it not only qualifies under those criteria, it's also the most stupidly entertaining entry in this non-franchise since the first one... which wasn't all that great but hey, people who love movies about man-eating crocodiles* can't afford to be all that discerning. But for the sake of tradition: Lake Placid (1999), written by David E. Kelley...

A mysterious package. A variety of interested parties. And only one man stands in their way.
After enjoying a few action movie hits at the box office, Steven Seagal started appearing in a string of straight-to-video action flicks after 2003's Half Past Dead was panned by critics and mostly ignored at the box office. The movies kept Seagal working and his fanbase (mostly) satisfied, and started with 2003's The Foreigner.
Seagal stars as Jonathan Cold, a former deep cover agent, or "foreigner," who now works freelance delivering high-risk packages. When Jonathan is hired to take a mysterious package from France to Germany, he soon learns that there is a swarm of different factions that want to get their hands on it. Shot entirely in Poland, The Foreigner is one of the few of Seagal's "strictly home entertainment"-era movies to get a sequel — 2005's Black Dawn.

It's Sunday afternoon, or: your last chance to read all that stuff you meant to read last week before Monday brings a new deluge of things you will want to read. Below, some of our recommendations: "Writer and Filmmaker With a Genius for Humor" by Charles McGrath (New York Times): A longtime friend's obituary of Nora Ephron chronicles her incomparable tabloid-to-magazine-to-Hollywood career, and some of her favorite things: her kids, taking a bath, and "coming over the bridge to Manhattan." Also worth a look: John Blumenthal's memories of Ephron's flirty paling around, Lena Dunham on their brief but rich friendship, and Noreen Malone on "Nora Ephron feminism." "Feeling About Half Past Dead: Down in the Basement With What’s Left of The Band" by Michael H. Miller (New York Observer): On the legacy of The Band, and what a reunion performance looks like when only two members are still around.

Chicago – Vern started his career as one of those snarky critics who wrote in to Harry Knowles’ landmark and influential movie website Ain’t It Cool News. He became a regular writer for the site and his work there turned him into a very unorthodox author. His first book was a fantastic examination of, believe it or not, the career of Steven Seagal. Newly updated with a dozen new chapters about the recent adventures of his subject matter (the first printing was in 2008), “Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal” is a funny, clever read for fans of the unusual action star and those who have never seen one of his movies. Vern’s movie-loving, smart, enjoyable writing makes this a more entertaining experience than Seagal himself has ever produced.
Don’t worry. This is not tongue-in-cheek nonsense. To say that Vern takes his subject matter seriously would be a Massive understatement.

Cleveland — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony didn't miss Axl Rose at all.
The rowdy celebration, which in past years has included awkward moments, touching tributes and unforgettable performances, rocked on without Rose, the Guns N' Roses frontman who may one day regret skipping a night when 6,000 fans, 1,400 guests and many of music's biggest stars partied in Public Hall with the class of 2012.
Hard rockers Guns N' Roses – minus Rose – headlined this year's eclectic group of inductees. Others being enshrined are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, folk icon Donovan, late singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and British bands the Small Faces and Faces.
Before the ceremony started with a blistering performance by Green Day, Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis said it was strange to be enshrined while on tour.
"We're going somewhere," Kiedis said. "How can we stop and take an award when really we're just halfway there?...

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the presenters for this year's induction ceremony, and it looks like its list of presenters is as eclectic as its list of honorees.
Comedian Chris Rock will induct Los Angeles band The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rock is a big fan of the "Californication" rockers and has been a friend of the band for a while, reports the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, Chuck D will induct the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp will induct Donovan, and Steve Van Zandt will induct the Small Faces/Faces.
Actress and singer Bette Midler will induct the late singer-songwriter Laura Nyro, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill from Zz Top will induct Freddie King, Robbie Robertson will induct Cosimo Matassa, and Carole King will induct Don Kirshner. The ceremony will also feature Tom Dowd and Glyn Johns and Smokey Robinson inducting The Blue Caps, the Comets, the Crickets,...

G.I. Joe is coming back in a big way this year. The follow-up is looking like it'll turn out to be one hell of a fun ride and the creative forces behind the film are giving us tons of reasons to be pumped for its return. We already have so much to look forward to: Snake eyes and Storm Shadow, Firefly, Red Ninjas, and a respectable looking Cobra! I was able to get some hilarious and awesome extra info when I went one-on-one with actors Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and director Jon M. Chu.
Somehow, Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is thrown into the fray as well. Enjoy!

Haywire
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Written by Lem Dobbs
USA/Ireland, 2011, imdb
At the risk of throwing the spotlight on our obsession with Haywire, after Simon‘s dismissive review, Ricky declaring it one of his favorite films to come out in January and the podcast where Justine had to pull them apart, when they argued about it, here I am throwing my oar in, hopefully with something new to say. To properly analyze the film, be warned: Hic Svnt Spoileres!

Haywire and the Difficulty of Being a Female Action Hero
Haywire reunites director Steven Soderbergh and writer Lem Dobbs, the creative duo behind the masterpiece The Limey. Haywire shares a flashback structure similar to The Limey, though nowhere near as layered and complex. Both films also share a dark moral ambiguity.
The Limey is about a bad man going after a badder man who may have killed his daughter. The...

Liam Hemsworth is trying to make a name for himself in the action genre. Deadline reports that The Hunger Games star is nearing a deal to star in Empire State, an indie heist movie to be directed by Dito Montiel (Fighting, The Son of No One). He would play the role of Chris in the film written by Adam Mazer (Breach, HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack). Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is also in talks to join the cast in the role of Ransone.
The movie is based on the true story of "a 1982 NYC armored car company robbery thought at the time to be the largest cash heist in U.S. history." Production is slated to start in April. Empire State is being produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films, with Randall Emmett and George Furla’s Emmett/Furla Films financing.

Exclusive: I’ve just learned that The Hunger Games‘ Liam Hemsworth is about to close a deal to star as ‘Chris’ in Empire State, an indie heist movie written by Adam Mazer (Breach, HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack) with Dito Montiel (Fighting, The Son Of No One) directing. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is negotiating to play ‘Ransone’. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films are producing. Randall Emmett and George Furla’s Emmett/Furla Films is financing. Formerly titled The Sentry Keep, pic is based on the true story of a 1982 NYC armored car company robbery thought at the time to be the largest cash heist in U.S. history. Filming would begin in April. Both Liam and The Rock keep booking high-profile pic after pic recently. But this movie features my kind of casting: 8-pack abs times two. I like male pulchritude with muscles.

With Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol coming out with minimal buzz and a 49 year-old Tom Cruise, it got me wondering about the modern action flick. During the 80’s we had a huge surge of action films with such actors like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwartzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone just to name a few. As time progressed, studios lined up the next generation of men to fill the positions of the now aging stars. However, when the Vin Diesels, the Jason Stathams, and the Rock debuted their films, there wasn’t nearly as much interest today in action films as in the past. Today they don’t even have A-list status. As a result, studios have forced the old-gen actors to continue churning out less and less plausible action films in their 60s. So while it may seem like all we’re missing is the right star,...

In a largely forgetful 2010 for the WWE, there was nothing more satisfying, at least to this humble narrator anyway, than witnessing the gradual route to the world title taken by The Miz. Showing increased awareness in the ring and cutting venomous promos talking about how he had been looked down on and laughed at and bullied and mocked only to prove everyone wrong with his hard work, perseverance, unwavering self doubt and can do attitude, Miz emerged as a stand out performer with a realistic story to tell and was the perfect heel in the sense that it was impossible not to respect him even if you didn’t necessarily like him or his style. Although he isn’t and never will be the worlds greatest worker, he had nonetheless transformed himself into an engaging in ring presence whose weight with the microphone was worth far more than the weight...

When I reviewed Lake Placid 3 last year, I stated that the best part of the film was Yancy Butler’s surly croc hunter. The producers must have agreed since she’s just been signed to star in Lake Placid 4 despite her character having died in the previous film.
Yes, Virginia, there will be a Lake Placid 4. Bloody Disgusting broke the news that Yancy Butler (“Witchblade”) has signed on to star in it. Hopefully, she’ll be playing the same entertaining character she did in part three. If that’s the case, they’re going to have to explain why her character is no longer dead. Different character? Twin sister? Guess we’ll have to wait until Lake Placid 4 almost certainly premieres on Syfy sometime next year.
