The enduring legacy of Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone" can be traced back to how the series revolutionized broadcast television in the 1960s. Described as a "series of imaginative tales that are not bound by time or space or the established laws of nature," "The Twilight Zone" ran for five seasons over the span of five years. Season 1's episode premiere, "Where is Everybody?" appropriately set the tone for the anthology series with its surreal and Kafka-esque qualities. However, somewhere around the fourth season, the show's appeal began to wane. Why did this happen?
The mixed critical response to season 4 was mainly due to Serling's dwindling involvement, along with scriptwriter Charles Beaumont's limited contribution due to illness. In a 1959 interview with Mike Wallace, Serling said that he worked non-stop on the project seven days a week, which made him utterly exhausted in the process. While exhaustion contributed...

Going back to the self-named show from the grossly misbehaving comedian we don’t discuss anymore, the most intriguing part of the FX comedy brand has been half-hour shows with no discernible format and no singular tone. Your average episode of Pamela Adlon’s Better Things could sometimes be three serious vignettes or one cohesive and silly story, could focus on Adlon’s Sam or any of her daughters, could make you laugh or make you cry. Reservation Dogs is currently in the middle of a flawless second season of episodes that have ranged from rollicking road-trip installments to single-set meditations on grief.

Universal TV is developing a 'reimagining' of the 1969 Rod Sterling horror/supernatural anthology TV series "Night Gallery", from Jeff Davis ("Teen Wolf"):
"...the new series will explore the dangers of social media and modern nightmares in the digital age..."
The original "Night Gallery" aired 1969-1973, featuring stories of horror and the macabre, with Rod Serling of "Twilight Zone" fame as both on-air host and major contributor of scripts.
Serling appeared in an art gallery setting and introduced the macabre tales that made up each episode by unveiling paintings that depicted the stories. His intro usually was:
"Each is a collector's item in its own way—not because of any special artistic quality, but because each captures on a canvas, suspended in time and space, a frozen moment of a nightmare."
The series was introduced with a pilot airing November 8, 1969, featuring the TV directorial debut of Steven Spielberg, starring Joan Crawford...

On September 5, 2022, “Don’t Worry Darling” premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a mixed reception. The film, which is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and scheduled for wide release on September 23, 2022, is directed by Olivia Wilde with a star-studded cast including Harry Styles, Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan. It centers on a couple in the 1950s that live in a seemingly idyllic neighborhood. When one of them begins to suspect something is amiss, unwanted waves are created within their little bubble. With a not-so-fresh rating of 43 on Rotten Tomatoes, what are critics saying?

Following her outstanding and irreverent directorial debut, “Booksmart,” actor-turned-filmmaker Olivia Wilde returns with a much more ambitious effort in “Don’t Worry Darling.” Taking the mystery box route, “Twilight Zone” meets “The Stepford Wives,” with a little dash of “The Matrix,” the audacious film is ultimately a misfire because of its overextending mystery conceit. But regardless, it’s a well-crafted film that shows Wilde’s debut was no fluke.

Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is a movie that, in recent weeks, has been besieged and consumed by offscreen dramas, none of which I’ll recount here, except to note that when a film’s lead actress seems actively reluctant to publicize the film in question, that’s a sign of some serious discord. Yet it would be hugely unfair to allow this tempest in a teapot of gossipy turmoil to influence one’s feelings about the movie. If you want to talk about problems related to “Don’t Worry Darling,” you need look no further than at what’s onscreen.
The film, written by Katie Silberman, with the brilliant production design of Katie Byron, is a kind of candy-colored “Stepford Wives” in the Twilight Zone meets “The Handmaid’s Tale” for the age of torn-at-the-seams democracy. ‘American Horror Stories’ targets the plastic surgery industry with a wild episode that hinges upon its transformative finish.
“What’s your secret?”
The world is a superficial place and it’s hard to not get caught up in physical appearances. It’s no surprise that a wealth of horror films and social satires focus on plastic surgery, the cosmetics industry, and the pursuit of “perfection.” Crimes of the Future, The Neon Demon, or a myriad of Tales From the Crypt episodes like “Beauty Rest,” “Only Skin Deep,” or “Judy, You’re Not Yourself Today” all attack the subject matter from uniquely creepy perspectives. In fact, “Facelift” is one of the episodes of American Horror Stories that most closely resembles a Tales From the Crypt installment, which is high praise for a series that occasionally feels like it’s phoning it in.

Fifteen years after the debut of their beloved comedy "Superbad," co-screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg took the time to reflect on their creation with its stars, and some of their revelations are not what you'd expect. In fact, in an oral history with Vanity Fair, they reveal that there was one actor whom Jonah Hill, who led the movie with costar Michael Cera, couldn't stand at first. Thanks to some strategically placed flyers and one chaotic audition, the "Superbad" creators revealed, Hill had a rocky start with Christopher Mintz-Plasse, aka McLovin, on and off camera.
"The search for McLovin was where we really started to go into a 'Twilight Zone' hole of madness. It became very evident that there were no actors who were right for the role," Goldberg told Vanity Fair. It wasn't until Mintz-Plasse showed up, thanks to some notices placed by the casting director...

Netflix is currently hard at work on “Black Mirror” Season 6, with production reportedly underway, and Deadline reports that Rory Culkin (Scream 4) has joined the season’s cast.
In addition to Scream 4, Rory Culkin’s horror credits also include The Last Thing Mary Saw, “50 States of Fright,” “Castle Rock,” Lords of Chaos, and Signs way back in 2002.
Zazie Beetz, Paapa Essiedu, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Danny Ramirez, Clara Rugaard, Auden Thornton and Anjana Vasan are all part of “Black Mirror” Season 6.
We hear that “Black Mirror” Season 6 will have more than three episodes. As you may recall, “Black Mirror” Season 5 had only three episodes back in the summer of 2019.
Created by Charlie Brooker, “Black Mirror” is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion.

In a medium founded on expanding one’s imagination and perception of reality, no genre does it better than science fiction. We’ve come a long way from the days when Georges Méliès took us to the moon, for today’s filmmakers look far beyond our universe and into the deepest corners of our soul to reflect the current society.
With the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise arriving in theaters this week, we’ve set out to reflect on the millennium’s sci-fi films that have most excelled. To note: we only stuck with feature-length works of 60 minutes or longer and, to make room for a few more titles, our definition of “the 21st century” stretched to include 2000.
Check out our top 50 below and let us know your favorites in the comments. We’ve also put the list on Letterboxd to keep track of how many you’ve seen.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his online horror anthology Split Lip, Sam Costello has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a hardcover collection featuring 13 of the best and creepiest Split Lip stories. We also have images and details on Funko’s third wave of Sdcc 2016 exclusives—including a Doctor Strange Pop! vinyl figure—as well as preview pages from Dark Horse’s trade paperback release of the comic book series Living with the Dead.
Split Lip Kickstarter: From Kickstarter: “Split Lip is an anthology of self-contained horror comics written by Sam Costello and drawn by artists from all over the world. It is often compared to The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. Influences include writers like Shirley Jackson and Clive Barker, comics creators like Junji Ito and Emily Carroll, ghost stories, folk tales and murder ballads.
Calling Split Lip horror is easiest, but it’s more accurate to call it weird fiction.

Near the end of his essay for the Criterion release of Dazed and Confused, Kent Jones writes, “[Richard] Linklater has a keen, poetic memory for exactly how we did nothing.” Like the best American directors, Linklater understands that the roots of Americana are in a formless wandering, one that was as often about bullshit as transcendence.
Everybody Wants Some!!, the spiritual sequel to his 1993 feature, is another rumination on transition, following the residents of a baseball house the weekend before classes at an unspecified college in 1980. It’s a weekend bacchanalia filled with rule-breaking parties, masculinity endurance tests, hotboxed bedrooms, closed-door hookups, and the flickers of a romance that could be about more than getting off.
Echoing the platonically ’70s ripples of “Sweet Emotion” in its predecessor, Everybody Wants Some!! opens with the stomping snares of “My Sharona.” It’s the dawn of a new era as the easy-going, sneakily joyful...

With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

Get ready, horror fans- there’s a storm brewing this week in New York City that’s wielding killer sharks and all kinds of wonderfully over-the-top chaos in Anthony C. Ferrante’s Sharknado 2: The Second One, which makes its debut tonight on SyFy.
During the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, Daily Dead chatted with director Ferrante, the sequel’s star Ian Ziering, and co-stars Vivica A. Fox and Judah Friedlander about their experiences making the film in New York City and their thoughts on the pop culture frenzy surrounding the Sharknado films.
Ian Ziering on the phenomena of Sharknado: The experience itself has been overwhelming. I never expected these movies to become what they’ve become. This is a low-budget science fiction movie and you never know when you initially come on board a project like this what the final product is going to be. And I originally never thought...

Whatever the technical intrigue of a film shot guerilla-style at Disney World, the would-be surreal midlife crisis that ended up onscreen doesn’t work… at all. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It sounded like a potentially fun idea: an indie shot guerilla-style at Disney World in Orlando and Disneyland in Los Angeles purporting to show, in a fictional way, the dark side of The Happiest Place on Earth. But it doesn’t work — at all. There’s not much story for far too long into the brief runtime, merely the onset of a midlife crisis for Jim (Roy Abramsohn) who, on the last day of his family vacation at Disney World, learns that he’s been fired from his job. He then proceeds to spend the day variously creeping on two teenaged French girls...

Chicago – “Cheap Thrills” is a case study in human desperation and depravity. It’s a sick and twisted film, but it goes about it in a most absorbing albeit uncomfortable way. It’s one of those films that forces the viewer to place themselves in the protagonist’s unpredictable position, asking a question like, “What would you do for money?” Once you do it, what else are you willing to do for more and then, “How far is too far?”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
In his directorial debut, E.L. Katz, along with screenwriters David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga, want us to ask such questions and many more. Based on the levels of humiliation and pain witnessed on the screen, they also want us to squirm in frustrated and anger. It’s like a product of “The Twilight Zone” and “Creepshow” spilling into each other, that happens to deliver one of the most memorable endings of the year.

With films like Raze getting a lot of attention lately, the question beckons... will combat horror be the next subgenre to hit it big? Given that Donald Lawrence Flaherty’s Brutal has added aliens to the mix, it just might!
Described as Fight Club meets “The Twilight Zone,” the film stars Morgan Benoit (Forbidden Kingdom, 47 Ronin) and features fight sequences created by two of Hollywood’s top stunt performers, Colin Follenweider (Avatar, X-Men) and Chris Torres (Letters from Iwo Jima).
Synopsis:
Brutal centers on Trevor (Morgan Benoit), who is abducted at the age of fifteen by an unseen alien presence. Forced into nearly two decades of no-holds-barred fights against other abductees, Trevor evolves from an innocent boy into a brutal fighting machine.
Derek (Jeff Hatch), an ambulance chasing lawyer, is the latest lab-rat abductee forced to fight Trevor. As they exchange increasingly violent beatings over the course of weeks and months,...

Syfy has ordered an amazing-sounding reality series. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge will basically be the creature version of Face Off with Jim Henson‘s son, Brian Henson as lead judge.
CBS has made it possible to watch the pilot Super Clyde online. The rejected comedy, from Raising Hope and My Name is Earl producer Greg Garcia, starred Rupert Grint as a fast food worker who receives an inheritance and uses it to become a superhero. Stephen Fry plays Clyde‘s butler, Tyler Labine plays Clyde’s brother and overall the pilot shows a frustrating amount of promise. Even if there won’t be more episodes, it’s worth watching for fans of Garcia’s previous shows.
Plus, who can say no to Rupert Grint in a sidecar?
It’s official. Jennie Garth has joined Tori Spelling‘s ABC Family pilot Mystery Girls.

One of Syfy’s big announcements earlier this year was that Jamie Foxx would write and direct a limited horror anthology series for them, with an airdate set for this October. It’s now being reported that the project has been delayed. Deadline says that the series has been postponed for scheduling reasons and a new target air date has not been given.
One possible reason for this is that Jamie Foxx has been busy with promoting White House Down and he’s supposed to meet with Syfy to discuss the project in more detail next month. The report doesn’t make it sound like the project moving forward is set in stone and we’ll let readers know when any updates are available. Here’s the original anthology announcement:

Ever since Jamie Foxx has taken on the role of Electro in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we've learned that deep down the guy is a geek that enjoys many of the same things we do. I'm pretty sure he's also the Oscar winner that has been bugging Todd McFarlane about getting the Spawn film made. We've now learned that Foxx is set to write, direct, and produce a new horror anthology series for the SyFy Channel! He might even star in it!
According to the report it will be a 5-episode series that will premiere during Syfy’s annual 31 Days Of Halloween programming marathon this October. There's no title for the series yet, but it's described as being in the same vein as Tales From The Crypt and The Twilight Zone. SyFy recently announced its upcoming slate of projects, and it features a ton of new series that caught our eye, including several adapted from popular science fiction and comic books, and others featuring the immense talents of Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) and Jamie Foxx. There are So many big ideas and high concept shows. It’s exciting to see what comes of all of these. So, let’s dive in.

From the sound of things, you should plan ahead and arrange for a group hug to be waiting for you
after watching tonight's Glee.
News
Syfy released a lot of news yesterday and probably the biggest revelation is that it ordered a fourth season of Being Human.
The channel also ordered a bunch of series and pilots. That included a pilot of High Moon from "television icon" (I'm going to use that title in the future, I sound too much like a fanboy when I call him a "god of teleplays") Bryan Fuller, and developing seven other dramas set in space. Every so often I'll see a complaint about how Syfy doesn't have any shows set in space (a big part of science fiction, admittedly), clearly they're trying to address that.
Syfy also ordered a few series including a horror anthology series from Jamie Foxx to air as part of Syfy's Halloween programming.

Jamie Foxx is just one of those people who can seemingly do it all. Want more proof? If you're a fan of Foxx and horror anthologies, then check out the following tidbit of news concerning his new project with the Syfy channel.
According to Deadline, at its upfront presentation this evening, Syfy will unveil a high-profile new scripted series from Jamie Foxx and his Foxxhole Prods. In the grand tradition of The Twilight Zone, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps, and Eerie, Indiana, comes R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour which reminds us that you don’t have to sacrifice writing for production values and recognizable faces. If you do it right, you can have it all, and for the first season, The Haunting Hour managed to do just that. Even if the stories aren’t all that original and reuse twists fans of the horror genre have likely seen before, for their intended adolescent audience they’ll likely feel fresh and even a little creepy when the right episode comes along. To help sweeten the deal, each episode has an appearance from a young up-and-coming star from another series like Modern Family’s Ariel Winter or Nolan Gould, The Twilight Saga’s Booboo Stewart, Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Robert Capron, Night at the Museum’s Jake Cherry,...

Deadline reports that Bryan Singer has signed a deal to executive produce and develop a reboot of The Twilight Zone for CBS TV. The original series ran on CBS from 1959 to 1964 and again from 1985 to 1989. Most recently, Upn attempted a Forest Whitaker–hosted reboot of the show in 2002 that ultimately got canceled after one season. There is also a Matt Reeves–spearheaded film remake still in the works. It’s too bad neither could’ve come out before Friday’s apocalypse — it would’ve been valuable to warn the future last person on Earth to make sure he doesn’t drop and break his glasses.

The episode, titled I Walk The Line, is doubly special as Tim Matheson, who plays Brick Breeland, also directed the installment And while directing is nothing new to the TV icon (this is his fourth time helming a Dixie ep and he's previously been behind the lens on The West Wing, Suits, White Collar, The Twilight Zone and St. Elsewhere to name a few), prior to Dixie, Tim had never directed and starred on a series before.

Most news coverage of San Diego Comic-Con is saturated with celebrity sightings and Hollywood movies. Magazines report on ridiculous cosplay, digital spectacle, and the publicity tidal wave of Hall H. But on the floor, the experience is different. There are stories on every corner that have nothing to do with film promotion; there are passions that bypass traditional t-shirt bargains and get straight to the meat of what comics are about; there are people who wait all year before finally getting the chance to have a serious discussion about Swamp Thing. This blog is about them. Posted in reverse chronological order (most recent post is at the top of the page).

Exclusive: Warner Bros has just acquired Live By Night, the new Dennis Lehane novel, as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. The film will be produced by his Appian Way Productions, which is working on several high profile Warner projects, including the Matt Reeves-directed The Twilight Zone, and Akira. They are also developing Satori, the bestseller by Savages author Don Winslow as a star vehicle for DiCaprio, with a script being written by Shane Salerno and Winslow. The novel uses some of the characters from Lehane’s sprawling period novel The Given Day and brings them into Prohibition. The Given Day, itself a wonderful novel, was originally optioned by Sam Raimi but that lapsed. This is the second installment of a trilogy that Lehane is writing, so Warner Bros controls all the material. DiCaprio and his partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran will produce and Appian’s Michael Ireland brought in the book.
