David Cronenberg always makes personal cinema, whether telepodding Jeff Goldblum into a human-sized pest in “The Fly” or asking James Spader to fuck a gaping flesh wound in “Crash.” The Canadian filmmaker will never tell you what makes his body horror classics so close to home, but he doesn’t feel it should matter to viewers anyway.
“For an average audience, they shouldn’t have to know that,” Cronenberg, behind oversized Saint Laurent sunglasses, told IndieWire at Cannes on a windy day atop the Jw Marriott. “They shouldn’t have to know that it has any basis in my reality at all. The movie has to stand on its own, and you can’t expect the audience to give you credit because it’s really happened to you.”

In his late career resurgence with Crimes of the Future having been showcased in the comp in 2022, David Cronenberg makes his entrance with The Shrouds (aka Les Linceuls) – a Canada-France co-production. Having been here before for Crash (1996), Spider (2002), A History of Violence (2005), Cosmopolis (2012) and Maps to the Stars (2014), the filmmaker reunites with Vincent Cassel and makes it a first with Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce.

David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds,” the horror auteur’s latest film about a widow who invents technology to see inside his late wife’s grave, received a 3.5-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere on Monday night.
The crowd showed their respect for the Cannes legend with applause after the credits rolled, but it was lackluster as audience members digested the film, which is a departure from Cronenberg’s usual out-of-the-box body horror. Instead, “The Shrouds” is a thoughtful exploration of grief and technology, and though there are several gross-out moments, the film relies on emotion more than anything.
“This is the first time I’ve seen the movie with an audience, and it’s completely different,” Cronenberg said after the clapping died down. “I’m very happy that you are all here.”
Described as an arthouse horror film, “The Shrouds” stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt.

“How dark do you want to go?” The man asking that is named Karsh (Vincent Cassel), and he’s seated in a minimalist art-chic restaurant having lunch with a blind date. The one who’s really asking the question, though, is David Cronenberg, writer-director of “The Shrouds.” He’s been asking that question — to audiences — for his entire career, and to him the answer has always been the same: The darker the better.
Yet Cronenberg has a special brand of dark. In “The Shrouds,” Karsh is a businessman who produces industrial videos, with a sleek Toronto apartment that looks out at the Cn Tower, but he’s also a co-owner of the restaurant they’re sitting in, and the purveyor of what’s in the garden next to it: a cemetery where the gravestones are technological devices, and the corpses are draped in futuristic shrouds that allow you to peer...

The body, as any fan of David Cronenberg’s cinema knows, will betray you. Canada’s greatest gift to genre film has spent half a century exploring how treacherous the human organism can be. How our frail frames can be infected, mutated or corrupted by outside invasion — see Rabid, Shivers or The Fly — or by internal disruption, be it mental illness (Spider), addiction (Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch) or destructive desire (Crash). And technology, be it the VHS implants in Videodrome, the virtual reality of eXistenZ or the body enhancements of Crimes of the Future, will not save us, says Cronenberg, from the way of all flesh.
The body’s final betrayal, of course, is death, the subject of Cronenberg’s new film. The Shrouds, which will premiere May 20 in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, stars Vincent Cassel as Karsh, a businessman overwhelmed with grief at the death of his...

William Hurt died on March 13, 2022, at age 71, just a week short of his 72nd birthday. The Oscar-winning actor starred in a variety of movies over the last four decades, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hurt made his movie debut with a starring role in Ken Russell‘s psychedelic thriller “Altered States” (1980), quickly followed by Lawrence Kasdan‘s classic neo-noir “Body Heat” (1981). He won the Oscar as Best Actor just four years later for Hector Babenco‘s “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1985), playing a transgender inmate at a South American prison who forms a bond with his cellmate (Raul Julia), a political prisoner. The role brought him additional prizes at BAFTA and the Cannes Film Festival.

Audiences have their share of options when it comes to such content, whether it’s established classics like Rurouni Kenshin, Jubei-chan: The Ninja Girl, and Ninja Scroll, or newer modern hits like Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, Yasuke, and Blue Eye Samurai. It’s harder to stand out in a genre that’s done it all before, but this only makes Ninja Kamui’s success even more significant. Officially, Prime Video’s spy drama Mr. and Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name. Unofficially, however, its origins are a bit murkier. Though this 2024 streaming iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares its basic premise with the previous Brad Pitt and Angelina-starring version (a married couple who also happen to be spies), the series diverges from it in some major ways as well.
In an interview with The Today Show, Glover (who also co-created the 2024 series) even admitted to not having seen the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film when he decided to embark upon the project. Co-creator Francesca Sloane wrote in an open letter to fans that “No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

Actress Scarlett Johansson finally escaped our long-running photo gallery of the greatest living actresses to never receive an Oscar nomination. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Just recently, Kirsten Dunst had been in our gallery for years and then earned her first Academy Award bid for “The Power of the Dog.” Emily Blunt was finally nominated for “Oppenheimer” years after winning her first SAG Award for “A Quiet Place.”
In 2014, “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston looked like a lock to receive her first Academy Award nomination for “Cake,” following citations at the Golden Globes, SAG, and Broadcast Film Critics. Yet on Oscar morning, the Emmy-winner was left out. Aniston’s “Friends” costar and fellow Emmy-victor Lisa Kudrow found herself in a similar situation when she received an Independent Spirit Awards nomination for “The Opposite of Sex” yet came up short at the Oscars.

As Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) have proven in recent years, there is ample precedent for performers to earn Oscar nominations despite snubs at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. Indeed, 18 such instances have occurred since 2002, the first year that all four precursor prizes were preceded by official nominations.
Over the last 22 years, each of the four acting Oscar categories has produced at least three out-of-the-blue bids. However, none of the performers who overcame their four earlier snubs managed to clinch the gold and instead had to settle for being Oscar finalists.
It’s worth noting that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids, albeit in 2001 when there were no Critics Choice nominations. The four precursor trophies were evenly distributed among her Oscar competitors: Judi Dench, Kate Hudson,...

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids. However, that was in 2001, the year before the Critics Choice introduced nominations. Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

Ever since “The Holdovers” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, 21-year-old Dominic Sessa has steadily attracted heaps of praise for his debut performance as one of its central characters. Despite earning recognition from some critics groups, he now unfortunately sits as a BAFTA longlist contender with no other key industry precursor bids. However, there is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Below, we list the 24 performers who pulled off Oscar nominations surprises after being overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar. Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) is the latest addition to this list for her Best Actress bid last year.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo has unsurprisingly taken the audience by storm. Although the third installment of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe is not as compact and tightly knit as its two predecessors, Kaithi (2019) and Vikram (2022), Thalapathy Vijay’s charismatic turn as the titular hero, the hyper-stylized action, and Anirudh Ravichander’s fiery soundtrack collectively make this one quite an experience as well. You are presumably here having already watched it, and now you want more stuff like Leo. In case you haven’t managed to watch the two other Lokesh films of this shared universe, you should see them before everything else, along with the 2021 action-thriller Master, another fantastic actioner helmed by Kanagaraj that doesn’t have anything to do with the universe. Master does bring you your Thalapathy fix, along with a brilliant Vijay Sethupathi in the fold. If you have already seen all that, then here we are with...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: The Star Beast.
The first of the new David Tennant and Catherine Tate-fronted episodes is called simply “The Star Beast”, a title it shares with the 1980 Doctor Who Weekly comic strip (published in the US by Marvel Comics as “Stan Lee Presents: Doctor Who”) “Doctor Who and the Star Beast”, featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker.
The TV special stars Miriam Margolyes as the voice of the fluffy alien “Beep the Meep”, who first appeared in that comic. And if we put the poster for the special alongside the cover of that comic (see above) there are… similarities.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Doctor Who TV series has adapted stories from other mediums. The most famous example would be when Paul Cornell was invited to adapt the Seventh Doctor novel he had written for Virgin New Adventures,...

In Ed Harris‘s over-40-year career he has surprisingly never won an Oscar or an Emmy, despite four nominations from the motion picture academy and two from the TV academy. Let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Harris’s 15 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Harris received his first Oscar nomination in 1995 after almost two decades in front of the camera: Best Supporting Actor for “Apollo 13.” He subsequently competed for “The Truman Show” (Best Supporting Actor in 1998), “Pollock” (Best Actor in 2000), and “The Hours” (Best Supporting Actor in 2002). He didn’t win any of those, and he hasn’t been nominated since, despite acclaimed performances in such films as “A History of Violence” (2005) and “Mother!” (2017).

Lokesh Kanagaraj is back with another film in his ‘multiverse,’ where he has paired with actor Thalapathy Vijay yet again. Their last outing had been quite successful, as Master was praised both critically and commercially. Now the pairing is back with Leo, Vijay’s 67th film. Because of that reason, the movie was supposed to be released with the title Thalapathy 67 but the title Leo worked out just fine. After all, Leo is the one everyone is after in this movie. But the movie begins with Parthiban, who owns a small cafe in Theog, Shimla. He is quite an interesting fellow, as, besides being a simple cafe owner, he is also an animal rescuer and helps local rangers. Like in A History of Violence, the world of crime finds Parthiban, and he is suspected to be the most feared criminal in Tamil Nadu, named Leo Das, because of their uncanny resemblance.

Religiosity isn’t a particularly good look lately, at least as it’s being performed by politicians. Artists, though — especially one the caliber of Jamaica’s Samory-Tour Frazer, a.k.a. Samory I — can still conjure the unifying power, beauty and healing that religion sometimes brings. Samory made this clear on Black Gold, his promising 2017 debut, with its Rastafarian calling card “Rasta Nuh Gangsta,” a policy brief to a local cop book-ended by Nyabinghi drumming and a potent dub breakdown. And his new album Strength is, even more so, a...

The Tamil version of David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence is wildly enjoyable, packed full of hyenas, car chases, fight scenes and, of course, song and dance
In 1997, John Wagner and Vince Locke published their superb graphic novel A History of Violence: it was the story of an apparently regular guy, a small town Michigan cafe owner, whose unexpectedly accomplished defence of his family during an attempted robbery hints at a dark past which eventually turns out to involve mob entanglements. In 2005, David Cronenberg adapted the novel into the splendid Viggo Mortensen vehicle of the same name, which – Aragorn aside – may represent Mortensen’s finest hour. Now, this new Tamil version has broken several box office records and, at two hours 40 minutes runtime, has plenty of scope to expand on its source material – especially in the 18-certificate “uncut” version which has just entered cinemas.

Vijay-starring “Leo: Bloody Sweet” is the fifth highest grossing Indian film of the year with $72 million. Its director Lokesh Kanagaraj is now in high demand.
The film got off to a winning start when it released in October, debuting in third position at the global box office with a $31.2 million weekend. The action-thriller follows a docile cafe owner (Vijay) who is incited to return to his violent past. The film name checks David Cronenberg’s 2005 film “A History of Violence.”
“It inspired me to write ‘Leo.’ ‘A History of Violence’ left its mark on me and from that this movie was born. ‘Leo’ is my tribute,” Kanagaraj told Variety. “The success of ‘Leo’ means a lot to not just me but the entire team.”
After a few shorts, Kanagaraj made his feature debut with “Maanagaram” (2017) and he also directed “Master,” starring Vijay. “Leo” is the latest instalment in Kanagaraj’s Lcu or Lokesh Cinematic Universe,...

Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj loves a bit of pastiche. Ostensibly remaking influential Western films like “Sorcerer” and “Assault on Precinct 13” with his beloved 2019 hit “Kaithi”, he’s a filmmaker brave enough to acknowledge his influences while also putting a gutsy Indian spin on the material. Now, he’s back with “Leo”, an action thriller that states in an opening quote from Kanagaraj himself that this is his tribute to David Cronenberg’s Canadian mystery thriller “A History of Violence”. It’s a bold move to prepare your audience for the twists and turns that might lie ahead by saying the story you’re about to tell will hit many of the same beats as a film they might well have seen, yet Kanagaraj adds so much to Cronenberg’s most stripped-back work that any core story elements are changed completely into something wholly more bombastic.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount) grossed a combined $54 million for the weekend. Of this weekend’s $83 million domestic box office total, 65 percent came from two films created outside the studio system with unconventional distribution.
With $31 million, “Eras” repeated at #1 although it dropped 67 percent from its impressive debut; it’s grossed just under $130 million so far. Martin Scorsese’s $200 million-budgeted, Apple-backed Osage Western opened in second place to $23 million, overcoming the challenge of its 206-minute running time.
With its lower average ticket price, “Flower Moon” sold nearly 2 million tickets in the U.S./Canada. “Eras,” with a $19.89 base price
The grosses are vital for theaters both in the near term and as templates for for future films produced outside studios when future major-studio production might decrease. They also reinforce the notion that releases seen as events can get elevated attention.

Thankfully recovering after a brutal bout with Covid-19, Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev will return with Jupiter. Variety reports the “politically-minded movie” tells the story of “a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future,” with a shoot set in Spain and France this spring. “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme, and through this prism we can look at any cultural landscape or historical era,” the director said.

Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

The much-awaited Tamil action thriller film Leo, starring Vijay and Sanjay Dutt, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is all set to hit the theatres on October 19, 2023. However, the Hindi version of the film will not be released in the national multiplex chains such as PVR, Inox, Cinepolis and Carnival. The reason behind this decision is the short Ott window of just four weeks, which means that the film will be available on Netflix within a month of its theatrical release1

You know you are watching a David Cronenberg film within the first few minutes. His unique directorial vision and style are instantly recognizable. For over 50 years, Cronenberg has been pushing the boundaries of mainstream cinema with his unflinching explorations of the human body and psyche. His films delve into humanity’s deepest fears and darkest desires, all with his signature clinical precision and intellectual curiosity.
David Cronenberg Depostiphotos
Cronenberg emerged from the “Canuxploitation” era of Canadian B-movies in the 1970s to become one of the most influential auteurs in modern film. His early cult classics like Shivers and Scanners established his fascination with the physicality of human existence and all the ways our flesh and minds can mutate and transform. Part of the excitement generated by James Gunn’s appointment as co-ceo of DC Studios stemmed from his reputation as an auteur who can elevate comic book movies into something slightly more artistic. While he has played in both the Marvel and DC sandboxes, he brings signature touches like his sense of humor and killer needle drops to every project he touches.
The early plans that Gunn and his partner Peter Safran have unveiled for their new cinematic universe suggest something more creatively ambitious than Warner Bros. Discovery’s most recent superhero efforts. And while we won’t truly know what their vision entails until the Gunn-directed “Superman: Legacy” kicks things off in 2025, Gunn certainly appears to be taking the job seriously.
In a new interview with GQ, Gunn was asked to rank his top five comic book movies of all time. While the list included predictable picks including “Superman” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,...

While Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are receiving the lion’s share of the many plaudits Netflix’s “Beef,” Maria Bello merits attention for her standout turn on the limited series. “Beef” follows the after-effects of a road-rage incident that consumes two people — Yeun’s Danny Cho and Wong’s Amy Lau. Danny is a down-on-his-luck contractor trying to piece together a living while literally living out of a motel with his brother (Young Mazino), who he is constantly at odds with. Amy, meanwhile, is a successful business owner trying to navigate the sale of her business to a larger company while stuck with a caring husband (Joseph Lee) who doesn’t seem to understand her.
Bello plays Jordan Forster, a wealthy and uber-successful businesswoman who heads up Forsters, a home improvement store and company. Forster tries to acquire Amy’s plant-selling business Kōyōhaus and dazzles Amy with wealth, opportunity,...

With any new entry into a well-trod subgenre, it's always challenging to make the material feel a little fresher and more unique compared to what's come before. A number of thrillers have had hapless families discover the father/husband had a secret, dark past, making husbands secret murderers, reformed former criminals ("A History of Violence"), cheaters, liars with other families ("Frequent Flyer") or even secretive agents or heroes (humorously subverted in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"). It's a tried-and-true background for a thriller, but the setup always presents a unique challenge: how could this very specific trope be pivoted to stand out in a crowded field?
"The Last Thing He Told Me," the new Apple TV+ based on Laura Dave's 2021 bestselling mystery thriller, follows a family torn apart when Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) disappears following a case of financial fraud at his place of employment. This leaves wife Hannah (Jennifer Garner...

David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller, “Dead Ringers,” starring Jeremy Irons, isn’t in most Top 3 lists for the filmmaker. Sure, there are fans of the original, but it doesn’t have the devoted fanbase as films such as “The Fly,” “Crash,” “Scanners,” and “A History of Violence,” for example. However, much like his other works, “Dead Ringers” has a brilliant premise, and that seed of the story is taken in a new direction in Prime Video’s new series remake of the film.
