Narcos was a surprise success for Netflix last year. Wagner Moura’s mesmeric portayal of Pablo Escobar was the show’s guiding light in the first season, and the episodes pick up right where the first ten left off. The new trailer promises an escalation in every sense. Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook return as the life […]

All I knew in advance about In the Name of My Daughter was that it was based on a true story, just like another of French auteur Andre Techine's recent films, The Girl On The Train. I've been a fan of his work for almost as long as I've been watching world cinema. Rendez-vous, My Favorite Season, Wild Reeds and Changing Times represent some of the best that French cinema has had to offer in the last 30 years.
It really says something about the strong fashion sense of the French (or the fact that I watched it from a screener instead of on the big screen) that I didn't even realize this movie was set in the 70s until I glanced over at the press notes about 15 minutes in to verify an actor's name. There just wasn't anything to indicate the time period at all, I presumed it was a contemporary tale.

With the last gasp of the Toronto International Film Festival now upon us (it officially closes Sunday,) the Oscar race has become further defined, particularly with input from Venice and Telluride. Until that fall fest trifecta, only IFC’s summer phenomenon Boyhood and perhaps Sony Pictures Classics’ Foxcatcher could realistically be thought to be in serious contention for Best Picture consideration. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel has been mentioned in some quarters, but that movie came out in March, and when was the last time a March release made the list of Best Picture nominees?

“On the Mount Rushmore of stand-up comedy, there are four faces, in my opinion: Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Bill Cosby — and Don Rickles,” Jerry Seinfeld declared at the top of Tuesday’s all-star tribute to legendary insult comic Rickles. The show — taped two days before Rickles’ 88th birthday — will air on Spike TV Wednesday, May 28.
Clearly, the biggest names in comedy agree with Seinfeld’s assessment. The evening, filmed in Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater, included tributes and mini-roasts of “the Merchant of Venom” from Bob Newhart, Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and David Letterman, as well as some...

On the eve of this week’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, Melanie Goodfellow examines why the French film industry looks set for a challenging 2014.
Barely two years ago, the French cinema industry was riding high: record audiences, record exports and seven Oscars for The Artist. French film was not only cool, it was also very, very successful.
But as the industry’s main players gather for the Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris (Jan 10-20), the mood will be gloomy: 2013 was tough at home and abroad, 2014 threatens to be even tougher.
Some wonder how Europe’s most powerful film industry will emerge from the perfect storm of recession at home, the disruptive force of technology and threats to what was once viewed as the one of the most successful film financing systems in the world.
“The mood across the industry is very tense and nervous at the moment, whatever the sector...

Catherine Deneuve: 2013 European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Catherine Deneuve has been named the recipient of the the European Film Academy’s 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award for her "outstanding body of work." And outstanding it is. Yesterday, I posted an article about Dirk Bogarde (Victim, Death in Venice, Despair), one of the rare performers anywhere on the planet to have consistently worked with world-class international filmmakers. The Paris-born Catherine Deneuve, who turns 70 next October 22, is another one of those lucky actors. (Photo: Catherine Deneuve at the Potiche premiere at the 2010 Venice Film Festival.) Deneuve’s directors have included an eclectic and prestigious list of filmmakers from various countries. Those include Belle de Jour and Tristana‘s Luis Buñuel; Le Sauvage and La Vie de Château‘s Jean-Paul Rappenau; The Hunger‘s Tony Scott; Un Flic‘s Jean-Pierre Melville; The Mississippi Mermaid and The Last Metro‘s François Truffaut...

The number of films dealing with age is rising as older people take up more of the cinema-going audience
The world's population is ageing. Today, there are about 600 million older people around the world, three times more than 50 years ago – and by 2050 there should be three times more again. The effect of that is already apparent in almost every sector, including culture, which of course includes the cinema. In the early 20th century, the brand-new film industry symbolised glamour and eternal youth before being relegated to a largely teenage audience, and then being caught up by age in the following century: the age of its audience, its creators, its characters and its subject matter.
The cinema has always found ways of dealing with the subject. For many years it simply skirted the issue in two ways. One was by using farce, with truculent old rogues, as in Frank Capra's...

Pascal Bonitzer’s Looking for Hortense (Cherchez Hortense, in the original French) is finally set to arrive on our shores this summer, having debuted at Venice last year to positive early reviews.
The film earned two nominations at the César Awards earlier in the year, the French equivalent of the Oscars. And with its August UK release date just a few weeks away, we’ve got the new UK quad poster to exclusively share.
Looking For Hortense is a bittersweet ‘comedie de moeurs’ that is French in spirit but universal in appeal. Damien (Jean-Pierre Bacri), a Chinese civilization professor, lives with his partner, Iva (Kristin Scott Thomas), a stage director, and their son Noé. The couple’s relationship has drifted into routine that has drained it of love. Damien finds himself trapped one day by Iva, who orders him to ask his father, a senior member of the French Council of State,...

Ok people, a two-hour Downton Abbey means we have a lot of drama and Dowager Countess quips to get through. Between cricket, calling the police and secretive doctor visits, we don't even have time to stop for a spot of tea and a scone. So, let's get right into it. What We Learned Changing Times: We know Robert (Hugh Bonneville) has made some questionable choices in the past, but have never groaned so loudly as when he suggested a Charles Ponzi investment. Robert, please just sit quietly in the corner. The way he resists change at every turn would be enough to drive anyone crazy. You would think after the doctor disaster resulting in Sybil's death, he'd be a little more open to compromise. But...

It's tough doing an oversees phone interview with U.K. actors when the connection is spotty and the Olympics festivities are going on full blare in the background. But Misfits stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Iwan Rheon were game if we were, and it was particularly sporting of Rheon as he's no longer even on the series. (He left at the end of Season 3 when his character traveled back in time.) But Rheon is thrilled that American TV audiences are finally getting to see the show [now airing on Logo] since he and the rest of the Misfits cast and crew "put so much work into it, and so much love."

Last night’s episode of Mad Men brought to the foreground the generational culture clash between iconic mid-century superman Don Draper and Michael Ginsberg, the up-and-coming Jewish copywriter played by Ben Feldman. We caught up with Feldman today to ask a simple question: How does it feel to be trying to out-Draper Draper? “It’s imposing,” the actor laughs, “especially when you stand in the elevator next to Jon Hamm, and he’s 35 feet taller than you.”
Given creator Matthew Weiner’s reputation for secrecy, Feldman is unsurprisingly loath to talk about how Ginsberg’s conflict with Draper will play...

Teenage girls, please don’t take advice from Don Draper. He’ll tell you to drink and smoke constantly, disappear for weeks at a time, and lie to everyone about everything; that may have worked for a powerful man in the ’60s, but you’ll probably be less successful if you embrace Don’s philosophy now. (Also, that whole ethos isn’t really working for Draper himself anymore, either.)
However, you can and should take advice from Jon Hamm. The Mad Men star recently followed in Paul Rudd’s footsteps by making an “Ask a Grown Man” video for Rookie...

We already know what Jon Hamm doesn’t like (“idiot” Kardashians and humorless Donald Trump, to name a few), but now we can add another line item to the list of things he does dig: ’70s sitcoms. In advance of IFC’s new show Comedy Bang! Bang!, the Mad Men star sidled up to Reggie Watts — the new millennial answer to the stream-of-consciousness music-as-comedy stylings of old-school Zach Galifianakis — to riff on the classic sitcom Taxi. I’m pretty sure the phrase “Hilary abounds at the taxi garage” is being worked into a Hollywood pitch at this very moment. Check...

Reality variations on popular scripted series have a long and semi-storied history. The O.C. begat Laguna Beach. Glee begat The Glee Project. Desperate Housewives begat about 87 percent of what airs on Bravo. So it’s easy to understand why AMC developed The Pitch, a new docuseries that’s meant to be a modern companion to Mad Men. Though the network’s most critically acclaimed show features plenty of client meetings and brainstorming sessions, it’s often more of a soapy character study than a workplace drama. The Pitch, then, can theoretically satisfy those who want to know more about...

When the camera moves in Raúl Ruiz's Mysteries of Lisbon (a film that manages to be baroque, Gothic, Expressionist and modernist at all once), it moves so weightlessly, relentlessly and unexpectedly that it seems as though it might at any moment pass—Fincher-style—through a wall. And sometimes it actually does. It performs the trick it's been hinting at. It slides sly, unshowy, snake-like from one room into another without missing a beat of the action.
For example: A priest and a boy are sitting in the waiting room of a country estate. The boy stands up to look at some paintings that are hanging on the wall, and Ruiz cuts from the boy's perspective of the paintings to some reverse shots of him to some vague and distorted images (suggesting "memories" in '40s shorthand) and then back to the wide shot of the waiting room—the trusty,...

The Toronto Film Festival starts today and throughout the festival, we'll be providing updates, interviews and reviews, but in scrolling through the massive schedule -- 300-plus films in 11 days -- there's a noticeable case of gender inequality. Yes, following rave reception in Telluride, a new king is expected to be crowned with a stuttering Colin Firth in the British historical dramedy "The King's Speech," while James Franco appears to have capped off a year of ubiquity with Danny Boyle's latest "127 Hours," which recounts the harrowing survival of rock climber Aron Ralston during five excruciating days in which his arm was stuck under a boulder. (On a less serious note, or too serious perhaps, "I'm Still Here" star Joaquin Phoenix and Vincent Gallo, who is in Canada with not one but two new films, should bring as much attention as they do the crazy.)

Chicago – The world has changed significantly since Kiefer Sutherland and the rest of the team behind Fox’s “24” were forced to save it repeatedly over the first six seasons of one of the most popular shows of the last decade. Will “24” still be relevant with controversy over real-life torture dominating the headlines and a new regime getting ready to take office?
