Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of the biggest actors in the world right now, who made a name for himself in iconic films such as Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, and of course – Pirates of The Caribbean. With that said, the new Pirates of the Caribbean report without Johnny Depp has only proven one of Hollywood’s problematic trends which are prevalent now.
Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands
Johnny Depp’s role as the ever-loveable yet whimsical Captain Jack Sparrow catapulted him to a level of success not seen before his time. This is especially true considering the fact that before him, pirate movies never really received any widespread acclaim.

Stellan Skarsgard revealed that he was hesitant to star in Mamma Mia!, but once he realized he just had to “look cute and be silly,” he was all in.
The veteran actor recently admitted to Vanity Fair that he was initially taken aback when asked to be in the 2008 movie musical with Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried because he can’t sing or dance.
“It was absurd to ask me to be in a musical,” Skarsgard said. “I can’t sing, I can’t dance. And then I saw it was also Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, and they can’t sing and dance either, so I felt a little safer there.”
In Mamma Mia!, Sophie (Seyfried) sets out to find her real father before her wedding day as her mother Donna (Streep) had been intimate with three men (Skarsgard, Brosnan and Firth), right before she got pregnant with Sophie.

Tom Hollander and Tom Holland may share 95% of a name, but what they don’t share is a massive Marvel paycheque.
While appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Tom Hollander revealed that he was once mistakenly sent a box-office bonus meant for Tom Holland. “People in the account’s department of my agency got confused. We were with the same agents briefly. And it was a terrible moment,” Hollander said. “I went to see my friend who was doing theater in England. I sat smugly in the audience just having done a BBC show for $30,000 … the interval came and I checked my email and I got one from the agency saying, ‘Payment slip for first box office bonus for ‘The Avengers.’”
Hollander was curious, but upon opening the email, he was left shaken by just how much it was. “It was an astonishing amount of money,” Hollander said. “It was not his salary.

They may be rascals, and scoundrels, and villains, and knaves, but it’s impossible to say that pirates aren’t fun to watch — at least on screen. And of course, there is perhaps no pirate more famous in pop culture at this point than Jack Sparrow, the bumbling, drunken heart of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
Known for never having a plan but somehow always ending up with one that works out, the unreasonably charming pirate was brought to life by Johnny Depp for five movies across nearly 15 years. In his journeys, he encountered the Kraken, Davy Jones, the Fountain of Youth, and even Poseidon’s trident.
But, if you’re here, you probably know all this. What you want to know is how to watch Sparrow and his pirate friends — including Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swan — in all their swashbuckling glory.

The Beatles are so famous they influenced a Pirates of the Caribbean film. The movie includes Paul McCartney singing a song from The Beatles’ Let It Be. Despite the scene’s accuracy to the time period, it feels like a cynical move from Disney.
Paul McCartney sings The Beatles’ ‘Maggie Mae’ in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards plays Jack Sparrow’s father. The most recent film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, features Paul as Jack Sparrow’s uncle. It’s basically the same joke, and it’s not any funnier the second time around.
The latter film features an actual Beatles song — sort of. When Paul’s character is first introduced, we hear him sing a snippet of the folk tune “Maggie Mae.” The Beatles covered that folk tune on their final album,...

The Little Mermaid is swimming laps around the competition at the Memorial Day weekend box office.
Disney’s live-action remake of the iconic animated film is headed for an estimated four-day domestic debut of $118.6 million, the holiday’s fifth-biggest opening of all time, according to final weekend actuals. The three-day gross is an estimated $96 million-plus. (On Saturday, the film looked to earn north of $120 million over the long holiday weekend, but domestic estimates shifted.)
Overseas, Little Mermaid started off with a disappointing $68.1 million from 51 markets for a projected global launch of $186.7 million through Monday. The pic drowned in China, opening to just $2.5 million. Box office pundits say the social media campaign protesting a Black actress being cast as Ariel could be having an impact in Asian markets and elsewhere.

Disney has another hit remake on its hands, as Rob Marshall’s “The Little Mermaid” has opened to $38 million from 4,320 theaters on Friday and is now estimated to earn a Memorial Day weekend opening of $106 million three-day and $135 million four-day in North America.
It’s still early in the weekend, so those figures may change. But right now, “The Little Mermaid” is on course to become the third highest Memorial Day weekend opening in box office history behind only last year’s “Top Gun: Maverick” ($160 million) and 2007 Disney film “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” ($139 million).
For all of their online hate and the general distaste from critics, the Disney remakes have been well received by general audiences. “The Little Mermaid” is no different with an A on CinemaScore to go with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 67% critics and 95% audience. It’s Memorial Day weekend, historically a great time for theaters to throw open their doors for the masses to come out and see a movie, whether it’s something new or something that’s been in theaters for a while. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Disney is well aware of the amount of money film opening over Memorial Day can bring in normally, having had massive hits with 2007’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” ($139.8 million four-day weekend) and Guy Ritchie‘s 2019 live action “Aladdin” ($116.8 million opening). They’ve also had Memorial Day flops like “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” starring Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010, which only opened with $37.8 million.
“Aladdin” might be a better comparison of note for Disney’s live action revamp of “The Little Mermaid,” directed by Rob Marshall, starring newcomer Halle Bailey with Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, as well having the voices of Awkwafina,...

Disney’s return to live-action takes of their animated vault in the fullest theatrical form happens this weekend with Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid which is eyeing a $180M worldwide start.
The majority of that number will be made stateside with $120M for the four-day Memorial Day weekend holiday, and around $100M over three days. At $120M, Little Mermaid would be the fifth highest opening in U.S./Canada for the Friday-Monday Memorial Day weekend holiday. Pic’s overseas launch in such major markets, save Japan on June 9, begins today in France, Italy, Korea, Brazil, Germany, the UK, Spain and China joining in subsequent days. For those keeping track, Cruella was the last live-action adaptation of a Disney animated pic (she was the villain in 101 Dalmatians), however, it went day and date over Memorial Day weekend 2021 when theaters were just reopening for the summer from Covid.

Disney‘s live-action The Little Mermaid is swimming toward Memorial Day Weekend with a song in its heart and dollar signs in its eyes. The latest version of the Disney animated classic is tracking toward a $110M 4-day opening. That number puts The Little Mermaid in the top eight spots for a Memorial Day Weekend release. The upcoming musical won’t touch Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5M Memorial Day start, but $110M is an outstanding total nonetheless.
Disney has a history of releasing films on Memorial Day Weekend, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned $153M, the studio’s highest total for the 4-day holiday debut. Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin earned $116.8M in 2019, placing the Guy Ritchie-directed fantasy film slightly above The Little Mermaid’s expected launch.

Exclusive: Disney’s live-action take of 2x Oscar nominated animated feature, The Little Mermaid, officially landed on tracking today for what looks to be a $110M 4-day opening. That will land the movie among the top eight openings for the holiday, last year Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick scoring a record start of $160.5M.
Of course, Little Mermaid, is female heavy, particularly with those under 25.

If the trailer for the next "Guardians of the Galaxy" film is any indication, it will be a bold, climactic finale to one of the best superhero groups in the MCU. The first two "Guardians" movies were surprisingly emotional underneath their goofy, lighthearted surfaces, whereas this third film doesn't even hide the fact that it plans to make us cry. "This is the big one," writer-director James Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. "This is where things really happen. This is where we get to know the truth about who these characters are, and we face the biggest stakes."
Of course, we'd forgive superhero fans in particular for being a little skeptical. We've seen plenty of trilogies before, and it's become common wisdom that the third film is always the worst. "The amount of good third episodes in a trilogy, I can count them on one hand," Gunn himself admitted. "Basically, there's...

Johnny Depp was riding high on his “Pirates of the Caribbean” success when another “nearly perfect” project began to wither on the vine.
It was 2007, and all 12,000 Hollywood film and TV writers were on strike.
Among other big movies he had in the pipeline, Depp was attached to star in “Shantaram,” about a former bank-robbing heroin addict who escapes an Australian prison and lands in India, where he struggles to begin an anonymous life in the urban chaos of 1980s Bombay.
Warner Bros. had bought the rights to the internationally bestselling novel of the same name in 2004, a year after it was published. The author, Gregory David Roberts, had written a screenplay.

Johnny Depp broke into Hollywood by appearing in popular films like "Platoon," and "Nightmare on Elm Street," but he became a star in 1987 when he portrayed Officer Tom Hanson in "21 Jump Street." Uncomfortable with the idea of being a teen magazine pinup, Depp spent the next few decades accepting roles in films that were outside of the mainstream, like, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Ninth Gate," and "The Astronaut's Wife." Depp stepped back into the spotlight in 2003 when he accepted the role of Jack Sparrow in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."
In the beginning, Disney executives were skeptical about Depp's staggering, slurring portrayal of Sparrow, but audiences fell in love with the character. Eventually, his audacious and unpredictable behavior became the main focus of the films, but that is not what the original director ever intended. In a 2012 interview with IGN, director Gore Verbinski...

Comedy occupies a pretty fascinating space within the movie world. Sure, comedies have been a part of mainstream cinema pretty much from the very start, dating back to some of the silent era's biggest stars like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. But comedy isn't as easy to churn out as something like horror. Just about anyone can make a horror movie with a little bit of money and some people willing to get blood on their clothes. Good horror is another conversation entirely but even the worst of the worst horror films can gain cult status. Comedy, however, requires a bit more.
With that having been said, it is always pretty remarkable when everything comes together and a comedy manages to break...

Sunday Am Update: Blame the fact that it doesn’t appeal to girls, blame Disney+ for stealing family moviegoers, blame the lack of an ensemble Toy Story cast, heck, blame everything as Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear didn’t do its magic by internal studio or industry standards this weekend with 51M, close to a third below its lowest 70M pre-release projection.
This is an opening more in the vicinity of Pixar’s original fare, so it could still leg out to 200M+. However, given how this IP was built on the back of the Toy Story brand, it’s clear many were expecting significantly more. Lightyear overall was down in its global start, 85.6M versus the top-end 135M estimate we reported. In sum, there wasn’t any urgency for mass moviegoers to see Lightyear.
Universal/Amblin is calling Jurassic World Dominion at 58.66M, -60, and a 68M 4-day.

Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow may have been the face of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, but Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) were definitely the heart of it. Star-crossed lovers will always hit the spot, and it doesn't get much better than Elizabeth and Will. Their love story helped anchor the first three films of the "Pirates" series with some much-needed resonance. Plus, their individual arcs weren't too shabby either. So when their story seemed to wrap up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," it naturally sent a few fans — this writer included — into a bit of...

There is no doubt that the box office is flying high after a stratospheric 127 million three-day and 161 million four-day holiday opening for Top Gun: Maverick, which was the biggest non-superhero debut since 2019 and nearly double the previous best Tom Cruise opening. The three-and-a-half decade in the waiting sequel also delivered a new record for Memorial Day weekend, beating Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Despite these highs, the lack of new releases is still holding back the box office, which is why May, despite being the second highest grossing month since the pandemic began with an overall box office of 786 million, was the lowest grossing May since 2006.
The month of May had two blockbusters with openings over 100 million (the other being Doctor Strange 2), but other than that it just had two films open in the teens, and nothing else to even open above 5 million. Compare this to May 2019, following...

It’s summer and the sheer amount of cash being generated on a non-holiday weekday is clearly showing that.
In the wake of scoring the best Memorial Day opening of all time at the domestic box office with 160.5M, Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick didn’t let up yesterday grossing 15.8M. While that’s the third best Tuesday in May stateside after Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (23.4M; May 1, 2018) and The Avengers (17.6M, May 8, 2012), it’s easily the best Tuesday in May for a non-Marvel movie; the comic book franchise continually dominating the month. Top Gun 2‘s Tuesday is also ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, that pic making 12.6M on May 10. In regards to the previous biggest Tuesday in May for a non-Marvel movie, that belonged to Disney’s Aladdin with 12M on May 28, 2019.
Top Gun 2‘s Tuesday was 53 off its Memorial Day Monday of 33.8M.

Tentpole brings 55 35+, 21 18-24 age demos.
Top Gun: Maverick defied multiple Covid delays and pre-launch trepidation about theatrical audience appetite with a record-breaking four-day 160.5m launch that set new marks for Memorial Day weekend and star-producer Tom Cruise.
While it seems almost surreal to consider that the Paramount-Skydance tentpole becomes the first 100m-plus opening weekend of Cruise’s stellar career, it is the audience composition that will have executives most excited as they look ahead to the coming weeks. The tentpole is expected to cross 300m in North America.

Tuesday Am Update: The Tom Cruise Paramount/Skydance sequel goes to an even higher stratosphere with a 4-day 160.5M Memorial Day opening record. Global is at a 300M start. Important to note that given the whole thing of rolling the 13.2M Thursday previews of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End into its opening weekend, that movie still has the 3-day over Memorial Day weekend with 127.97M to Top Gun: Maverick‘s 126.7M.
Monday Am Update: Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick has beaten Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End fair and square for the Memorial Day opening 4-day record (+ previews) at the domestic box office with 156M. While easily Tom Cruise’s best opening of all-time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is the common denominator of the two largest Memorial Day weekend openings at the domestic box office.

Stocks fell broadly on economic jitters with AMC Entertainment and Paramount struggling to stay in the green in late-morning trading after the biggest Memorial Day movie opening ever in Top Gun: Maverick.
Things change fast lately on a Wall Street buffeted by the latest news on war, inflation and interest rates, so this is not the last word for today’s session — the first since Friday and the blowout performance of the Tom Cruise action film that’s great news for movie theaters and for Paramount.
The Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel to Cruise’s 1986 turn as Navy fighter pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, took in more than 153 million over the four-day weekend, topping the previous record holder for the frame, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, from 2007. After a year in which younger adults have been the kingmakers at the box office, Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick” has become one of the biggest hits of the pandemic era thanks in large part to Gen X moviegoers who saw the original “Top Gun” back in the 1980s. With a four-day estimated opening of 160.5 million, “Top Gun: Maverick” has passed “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” for the highest Memorial Day weekend opening ever. Even “Maverick’s” three-day opening of 126.7 million ranks fourth-highest among all films released in the U.S. since theaters reopened. And that’s especially impressive when you consider this: Paramount’s demographics reports show that a staggering 55 of the opening audience was over the age of 35. By comparison, that age group’s opening audience share for Warner Bros.’ “The Batman” back in March was just 31, while the opening audience share for Tom Cruise’s last blockbuster,...

Jerry Bruckheimer has plenty to celebrate over Memorial Day weekend, literally watching the long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, beat his previous domestic box office opening record for the holiday previously set by 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
The Paramount/Skydance co-production easily won the record Memorial Day opening at the B.O. with 156M (which included previews), unseating Pirates 3‘s 153M opening.
Outside of any delay created by the pandemic, why the world had to wait 36 years for the further adventures of Tom Cruise’s Capt. It was a Memorial Day weekend for the ages as Tom Cruise returned with his first movie in four years. That movie was “Top Gun: Maverick,” and it brought back his character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from 1986’s blockbuster hit “Top Gun.” Clearly, audiences were excited for Cruise to return to this role, since because “Top Gun: Maverick” not only became Cruise’s biggest opening ever but also set a record for the four-day Memorial Day box office.
If you read this past week’s weekend preview, you already know that “Top Gun: Maverick” got excellent reviews after playing at CinemaCon and Cannes. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were only part of the story, as it performed even better among audiences with 99 recommending it, as well as the movie receiving an extremely rare “A+” CinemaScore.

Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick” has broken both the sound barrier and the Memorial Day weekend box office record with an estimated four-day opening of 156 million from 4,735 theaters.
With that total, the blockbuster, starring Tom Cruise, has beaten the record held by “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which took in 153 million, a record that has stood since 2007. Paramount also reports an actual three-day opening of 126.7 million, which ranks fourth among all films released since theaters reopened and second behind “Iron Man 2” (128) on Paramount’s all-time list.
“Top Gun: Maverick” also blows away the personal best opening weekend record for Cruise, which was previously the 64 million opening for “War of the Worlds” in 2005. Combined with an estimated 124 million grossed overseas through Sunday, “Top Gun: Maverick” has earned more than 250 million globally so far.

Tom Cruise’s star-spangled blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” capped off Memorial Day weekend with a box office debut for the record books. The sequel, which sees Cruise return to the cockpit after 36 years, collected 156 million in its first four days of release.
Those ticket sales were enough to overtake Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which launched with 153 million over the long weekend in 2007, as the biggest Memorial Day debut in history.
Paramount and Skydance had originally expected “Top Gun: Maverick” to finish the long weekend with 151 million, but the film had a better-than-expected turnout on Sunday, pushing the three-day haul to 126 million. (Sunday’s estimates had the three-day tally at 124 million.) The movie is playing 4,732 North American cinemas, the widest release of all time.

“Mission: Impossible” may be Tom Cruise’s greatest claim to fame, but his latest blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” has blown that franchise out of the water this weekend with a domestic opening of 124 million from 4,735 theaters. The international total for the film also stands at 124 million, giving it a global launch of 248 million.
Not only has the Paramount/Skydance sequel given Cruise the first 100 million-plus opening of his career, but it is more than double the opening weekend of any “Mission: Impossible” film. Cruise’s previous opening weekend record was set by “War of the Worlds” with 64 million.

At long last, Tom Cruise is entering the 100 million opening club.
Playing in 4,735 locations, the widest theatrical release in domestic box office history, “Top Gun: Maverick” is projected to earn 150 million over the holiday weekend. On a three-day scale, Paramount is predicting a 123 million haul. That’s easily a new record debut for Cruise, whose previous best — a 64.8 million opening for 2005’s “War of the Worlds” — is getting left in the dust.
The legacy sequel to Tony Scott’s swoony 1986 original kicked off with a bang, drawing a 51.8 million opening day, including 19.3 million in Thursday previews. That’s a record for Paramount Pictures, outdoing the 51.2 million opening day of 2010’s “Iron Man 2.” “Maverick,” which was co-financed and co-produced by Skydance, originally carried a projected opening between 85 million and 100 million over the long weekend, though momentum has only grown since.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was originally set to premiere way back...

For a company as renowned for its family friendly product as Disney, it has a history of scenes or sequences that are horrifying (if not outright depressing) – Mufasa getting trampled by the wildebeests, Bambi’s mother disappearing into the forest and pretty much everything that happens in “Pinocchio.” (Not to mention live-action atrocities like the end of “Old Yeller” and the beginning of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”) But nothing can prepare you for how sobering and deeply unsettling Disneynature’s “Polar Bear” is.
“Polar Bear” is very much like other Disneynature entries that came before it (things like “Dolphin Reef” or “Penguins”) – it’s beautifully shot, featuring moments you never thought you’d seen (like when a beached whale becomes an unlikely polar bear pool party) and has top notch narration (this time courtesy of Catherine Keener). But in other ways it’s more somber and introspective; the narration is first-person,...

Given it’s been a tough 12 months for cinema, it would be an achievement to appear in just one of the top 10 highest grossing films of the year. Naomie Harris has appeared in two: “No Time to Die” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” as MI6 secretary Moneypenny and superhero Shriek, respectively.
Now the actor, who has spent much of her career moving seamlessly between big budget blockbusters such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and indie fare, ends the year on screen in Apple Original Films’ “Swan Song” opposite Mahershala Ali, a sci-fi tearjerker that’s already picking up Oscar buzz.
And as if she wasn’t busy enough, having also recently wrapped Showtime series “The Man Who Fell to Earth” opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harris is making her producing debut, she exclusively tells Variety, on a project about an aspect of Black history traditionally under-explored in cinema...

The film centers on a dangerous hitman (McDonough) tasked with hunting down a teenager (Melrose) who witnessed his older brother’s murder at the hands of a ruthless Southern crime lord (Cudlitz). Red Stone was produced by Robert Johnson, Jason Starne and Austin Williams, with Dwayne Williams and Alex Blackmon exec producing.

Warning: Spoilers for Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” in the waters ahead. You have been warned.
Disney’s latest adventure is a journey through dangerous waters, on the hunt for a magic treasure — but be wary of those immortal beings cursed by said treasure. They’re not to be trifled with, but don’t worry, you’ll have the help of a lovable rogue, who knows the ins and out of the cursed ones having been part of their crew, and he’s played one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.
If you’re checking your calendar right now, no, it’s not 2003, and I’m not talking about “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I’m actually referring to “Jungle Cruise,” out in theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access now. But you can be forgiven for the mistake, because it sure feels an awful lot like the early 2000s hit...

The original Star Wars movies featured some of the largest sets and most advanced special effects ever seen at that point in time. Despite all these revolutionary features, however, the film only cost about $10 million to make. When adjusted for inflation, that locks in the budget at around $45 million by today’s standards.
For comparison, the seventh Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, cost a whopping $300 million to make. As far as price tags go, the project is eclipsed only by Gore Verbinski’s sprawling Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, as well as Marvel’s monumental Infinity War and Endgame.
Moving forward, you’d expect the next Star Wars movie to cost even more. However, if industry insiders are to be believed, that won’t happen. In a recent report, the editor in chief of Making Star Wars explained his belief that future films set in a galaxy far,...
