Netflix’s live roast of NFL great Tom Brady made it into the Nielsen streaming rankings for its premiere, despite only being available for a few hours of that week. After its first full week on the streamer, it rocketed to the top of the charts.
The Roast of Tom Brady gathered 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the week of May 6-12, leading all streaming titles by a wide margin (the second-place finisher, Grey’s Anatomy, had 1.11 billion minutes of watch time for the week). The roast also had by far the biggest weekly viewing tally ever for a Netflix special; the previous high was 798 million minutes for Chris Rock’s stand-up special Selective Outrage in March 2023.
The 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the roast in the United States translates to about 27.87 million hours, or about two thirds of Netflix’s reported worldwide total (42.2 million hours) for the special that week.

Tom Bower, the veteran character actor best known for prominent turns on The Waltons and in Die Hard 2, has died. A family member confirmed the news to Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. He was 86.
Bower never had what one might call a “breakout” part, but he was an actor one recognized from, well, everywhere. His more than 180 screen credits include appearances on The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Quincy M.E., Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order and many other TV staples of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s.
And he kept on working. In the past 15 years, Bower was on Ray Donovan, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Office and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also played the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character on Lucky Hank and had a part in Vince Gilligan’s El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie.

On June 6, the first two episodes of the new season of one of the longest-running crime shows on television, Criminal Minds, will be released.
And although many of the stars of the Bau team have returned for the project's reboot, Evolution, some, for one reason or another, have yet to join them.
1. Dr. Spencer Reid played by Matthew Gray Gubler
Matthew Gray Gubler got the role of Dr. Spencer Reid after Lukas Haas turned it down. Criminal Minds reveals a slightly different direction in the season premiere episodes when the team goes against everything they believe in working with Elias Voit because of his Gold Star knowledge.
Hopefully, you've been following along with Everything We Know leading into the premiere. Now, we've got thoughts about that and the Gold Star reveal in general, as well as the potential that arises when you begin to talk about social contagions again.
Maybe you'll agree or disagree, but we're about to see if we're on the same page!
Gold Star is... a Government-Trained Serial Killer???
Ok. I was incredibly unimpressed that Gold Star was the code name of an unsub. Boring.
I was hoping for a big government conspiracy and coverup, with lots of promises, to confuse and conflict the Bau team members about their direction.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17 Episodes 1 “Gold Star” and 2 “Contagion.”] The Bau has a new UnSub to track down in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17, and the really bad news is they have to work with a previous one, serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), to do it. But maybe, just maybe, the profilers can use this to their advantage. After all, if they can find Gold Star without Voit’s help, the deal he made with the FBI director (Clark Gregg) is null and void, and if they can get him to confess to a crime that proves he’s Sicarius, even better! That’s easier said than done, especially as he manages to get under at least one profiler’s skin. Plus, after the events of Season 16, Rossi (Joe Mantegna) is hallucinating his own version of Voit. Below, the cast and showrunner Erica Messer ...

Blue Bloods might not be done yet. An extension of the popular CBS series might be in the works, a Paramount exec recently hinted.
CBS is considering ‘franchise extension’ for ‘Blue Bloods’ Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan in ‘Blue Bloods’ | John Paul Filo/CBS via Getty Images
The big Blue Bloods news came during a meeting for Paramount shareholders on June 4.
“We are building tomorrow’s billion-dollar brands right now,” Paramount Global co-ceo Brian Robbins said. “In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for Dexter, Billions, and Blue Bloods, and CBS’ hit Fire Country shows huge promise.”
CBS has already announced that a Fire Country spinoff, titled Sheriff Country, will debut during the 2025-26 broadcast season, while a Dexter prequel is moving forward at Showtime. Billions spinoffs are also in development, sources told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. But this is the first time a spinoff of Blue Bloods has been mentioned.

The end of Blue Bloods is almost upon us, but is it really the end of the beloved crime drama?
After S.W.A.T. was un-canceled earlier this year, Blue Bloods fans hoped there was a way forward for the long-running series.
Those hopes were dashed when the network confirmed last month that the back half of Blue Bloods Season 14 will 100% be the end for the show.
However, during Paramount’s annual stockholders meeting this week, we got our biggest indication that the franchise will not remain dormant for long.
According to TV Line, Paramount Global co-ceo Brian Robbins hinted a spinoff is in the works.
“In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for Dexter, Billions, and Blue Bloods,” the exec said.
CBS tends to keep beloved franchises alive with spinoffs
Spinoffs of popular CBS series aren’t a groundbreaking concept, with NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, and Criminal Minds: Evolution being some recent efforts.

Now, Gold Star is driving Season 17. “It has reached its ugly tentacles in more places than we realized,” Adam Rodriguez (who plays Luke Alvez) shared when he recently stopped by TV Insider. The 2000s was an interesting time for cinema. Let’s face it: it was an interesting time in general. In the realm of horror, the beginning of the aughts saw an influx of remakes of J-Horror – some bad, some pretty decent. However, with the post-9/11 cultural climate heightening anxieties and desensitization to violence due to real-world events, another genre emerged, tapping into the darker side of human nature. First coined by David Edelstein in a 2006 article in New York magazine, “torture porn” took the roots of exploitation and splatter films of the 70s and 80s and reintroduced the mainstream audiences to a new level of explicit brutality. Films like Saw, Hostel, The Devil’s Rejects, and the New Extremity of French Horror were raw and unapologetic looks at human depravity. It was everywhere. I mean, there was a time when you couldn’t go more than a year without having a Saw film.

The Bau is back in action, but one familiar member of the team is still Mia. Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds for 15 seasons, won’t appear in season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, which premieres June 6 on Paramount+.

Criminal Minds wrapped up its decade-plus run on CBS in early 2020. But in 2022, the show was rebooted for a 16th season, dubbed Criminal Minds: Evolution. The 10-episode, streaming-only season featured the team – including David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) – working a complex case involving a serial killer named Elias Voit (Zach Gilford).
While Criminal Minds: Evolution brought back most of the show’s core cast, a few familiar faces were missing.

When Criminal Minds: Evolution returns for Season 17, it will be doing so without one of its long-time recurring stars. In January, Josh Stewart, who has recurred since debuting in the original run’s second season, wrote on social media that his “days of playing Will Lamontagne Jr. are over.” But how will the show address the absence of JJ’s (A.J. Cook) husband, especially considering how much we saw of them at home together in the first season of the revival? TV Insider asked showrunner Erica Messer just that. “Yeah, we really enjoyed that run last season and then this season again, because it’s only two weeks from last season and it’s sort of a bullet train of a year, we know that he’s on an assignment, just like there’s always another case, just like we always have another case,” Messer explains. “So we’re not...

The Netflix special roasting NFL great Tom Brady made it onto the streaming charts for the week it premiered — despite it only being up for a few hours of that week.
The Roast of Tom Brady racked up 279 million minutes for the week of April 29-May 5, good for 10th place among original series in Nielsen’s rankings. The special streamed live on May 5, meaning it tallied those viewing minutes in under 12 hours. (With a running time of almost three hours, the 279 million minutes equate to about 1.6 million complete runs of the special.)
Bluey moved back into the top overall spot with 1.18 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+, adding to its total as the most streamed title in the United States so far this year (21.73 billion minutes and counting). Looking back at the beginnings of many procedural dramas, viewers long for the sense of nostalgia that the early seasons bring. Whether it is the more dynamic writing or the original cast, half of which is now gone, fans of any show that crosses the 10-season mark find themselves returning to the earlier episodes.
With CBS' original hit Criminal Minds now in its 17th year, viewers are more prone to nostalgia than ever. The good news is that the writers have embraced this trend and made some choices that are likely to be very reminiscent of the beginning of the drama.
When Will Criminal Minds Season 17 Premiere?
Premiering Thursday, June 6, the new season of Criminal Minds will see the staff of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) face another series of crimes. However, the main danger the team faced in the previous season, Elias Voit, will continue to terrorize them even though he's been caught.

DC Studios' upcoming Green Lantern TV show, "Lanterns," has assembled its writer corps. Co-CEO James Gunn confirmed on Instagram today that the series' pilot script and show bible was written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and DC Comics writer Tom King, who has been part of the DC Universe's creative team since the start.
"Lanterns" was first announced in January 2023, along with the rest of the "Gods and Monsters" slate, as it's been dubbed by Gunn and his fellow co-ceo, Peter Safran. It's a soft reboot for the DC Extended Universe, which fizzled out into a succession of box office bombs, and is currently taking a bit of a breather while Gunn and Safran assemble this massive new slate of films and TV shows. Gunn is also getting personally stuck in, writing and directing the upcoming "Superman" movie reboot and continuing his creative duties on "Peacemaker" for season 2.
