You didn’t need to look far to find escapism in the horror genre this past year. If you felt like losing yourself in a movie, Pennywise was waiting with open arms in the sewer drain. If you wanted to feel like a kid again, Mike and his friends were waiting for you on Netflix, their bikes parked at the Hawkins arcade when they're not fending off the Demidogs. Looking back on 2017, here are some of my favorite slices of escapism oases in the horror genre:
Stranger Things Season 2: Whether you look at it from a character, creature, or story standpoint, Stranger Things Season 2 was the Aliens to the first season’s Alien. Despite having a bigger story, The Duffer Brothers never lose sight of the characters, further exploring the tested friendships of Mike’s group (if you can even call it Mike’s group anymore, since Dustin, Lucas,...

Newsflash will see Chris Pine as legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite, set in 1963 during the Kennedy assassination story.
Chris Pine is getting ready to trade the catchphrase, "beam me up," for “that's the way it is.” That's because the Star Trek and Wonder Woman actor has landed the role of legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite in a fact-based drama, called Newsflash.
The November 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, TX – one of the biggest stories of the 20th century – will serve as the historical backdrop for Newsflash, in which Pine will portray Cronkite, confirms Deadline. Indeed, the film will center on the CBS news anchor’s monumental report that kicked off when he famously interrupted daytime soap opera As the World Turns to break the initial report of shots being fired at Kennedy’s presidential motorcade. The 38-year-old leading man Pine will likely be made...

Set to visit 16 cities in 2014, Wizard World’s plethora of comic book booths, clothing vendors, and impressive line-up of celebrities are always enough to sate the appetite of any pop culture enthusiast, but prior to their visit to Minneapolis May 2nd–4th, I was wondering how much horror would be had in the aisles within the Convention Center’s cavernous confines.
As it turns out, Wizard World had more than enough entertainment for horror fans to dig into, and they picked the perfect horror headliner for Wizard World Minneapolis: Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger, the living legend of our nightmares and realities.
One of my first destinations upon entering Wizard World Minneapolis was Robert Englund’s booth. I weaved my way through a crowd of eye-grabbing cosplayers—Hellboy, Darth Maul, and a perfectly matched Spider-Man and Black Cat couple were of particular notice—before stepping in line to...

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)

Starring Patrick Fabian (Interview), Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Tony Bentley

Image Ent. has acquired all North American rights to Jinga Films' supernatural horror Finale. Described as an homage to Dario Argento's Suspiria, John Michael Elfers' debut feature stars Carolyn Von Hauck as a grieving mother who discovers that her deceased son had been dabbling in black magic. Image has skedded the release for May. On Monday, Jinga announced it had added Federico Zampaglione's psychological horror Shadow to its Berlin market slate. Produced by Massimo Ferrero, the English-language, Italian horror pic stars Jake Muxworthy (Borderland), Karina Testa (Frontiere), Chris Coppola (Friday 13th) and Nuot Arquint (The Passion of Christ). The pic centers on an American Iraq War vet whose romantic vacation in the Italian Alps turns into a Deliverance-style nightmare after a confrontation with local hunters.

Forget Swine Flu, the only illness you want to be innoculated against is the flesh-rotting sickness that spread through Cabin Fever!
When Cabin Fever opened in 2002, with it's audacious mix of horror, gore and comedy, it was a surprise hit. Introducing the world to Fango reader-turned-filmmaker Eli Roth and scream queens Cerina Vincent & Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever got strong reviews and the cover of Fangoria. Even though it had an ending that left itself open for one in a genre that thrives on them, Cabin Fever never got a sequel... until now.
Seven years after the original, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever made it's world premiere at Screamfest Horror Film Festival at Hollywood's Mann Chinese 6 this past weekend. Directed by Ti West (House Of The Devil), it picks up where the original left off.

One of the complaints raised at the special Fangoria 30th-anniversary panel at Spain’s Sitges international film fest (see last report here and go here for the fest’s official site) was the lack of Italian contributions to the current cinematic fright scene. The gruesome 1980s are long gone, where goremeisters such as the late Lucio Fulci ruled the scene. Italian horror directors find it nearly impossible to get their films financed these days, while the master, Dario Argento, appears to have lost his mojo (Mother Of Tears bombed in most territories, and advance buzz on Giallo remains dire).
“It’s very difficult to get horror movies made in Italy, which is why I moved to Bucharest,” says former Fango scribe Loris Curci, who graduated to producing movies in recent years. His efforts include the Ken Foree Croatian/Catalan/American zombie flick Zone Of The Dead, a Sitges premiere,...

Tobe Hooper ( The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ) may be revisiting the 1932 classic White Zombie , which starred Bela Lugosi. That's what sources have been telling me for the last month. The original, directed by Victor Halperin, tells of a botched attempt on a young man's behalf to lure a woman he desires away from her fiance. She dies and is resurrected as a "zombie." Garnett Weston penned the script. Upon revisiting the press notes for The Haunting in Connecticut , I discovered they state Steve Whitney is producing the update. His credits include Tamara and Borderland . More info as it comes!

For My Bloody Valentine screenwriters Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, penning a script for a movie to be shot in the latest, most hi-tech version of 3-D yet did not pose any particular challenges. Nor did it call for them to dream up especially imaginative death scenes…at first.
“Certainly not initially,” says Farmer, whose previous credits include 2001’s Jason X and 2007’s The Messengers. “At first, we concentrated on characters and plot, because that’s really what we want to do. I mean, we’re all horror fans, so we’ve seen how some genre films have not pulled these things off. We wanted to tell an intriguing story, we wanted to have intriguing people—that was the first thing.
“But then I would be working on that aspect of it, and I would get a call in the middle of the night from my director,” Farmer continues, glancing over at the man himself,...

Based on the survival/horror title that spawned two sequels, Clock Tower is said to be filming shortly with locations recently scouted in Michigan. Variety reported back in April that production was set for a July start, which was subsequently delayed.
Not much else is currently known about the long-awaited film sans the attachment of Director Martin Weisz (The Hills Have Eyes 2) working from a screenplay by Eric Poppen (Borderland), with Brittany Snow (Prom Night) attached to star.
Early information idicates that the film will take it's cue largely from the game's second installment, Clock Tower 2: The Struggle Within, "in which the heroine finds herself locked up in a psychiatric hospital as...

You know, at this point I think that Milla Jovovich should probably be named the patron saint of video game flicks. Mainly it's because that in the barrage of crappy console-to- screen properties, there are none more beloved than the Resident Evil series. So I can only hope that some of that 'geek shine' is going to rub off on The Weinstein's latest attempt. Bloody Disgusting (who is usually pretty reliable when it comes to all things horror) has confirmed that Jovovich is set to star in the big-screen adaptation of Capcom's horror-survival game, Clock Tower. Even though this news is still in the rumor stage, Bd is confident that Jovovich is already on board.
