Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.
It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

In this day and age, there are more films being made than ever before. It's easy to miss movies, so many audiences turn to sites like Rotten Tomatoes for guidance, though that may not necessarily have an impact on the box office. There's a common misconception about how that site works, though. The score given to each film isn't a representation of how good the movie is; instead, it represents the percentage of critics who would recommend the film overall. In other words, if half of all surveyed critics loved a movie and half of them hated it, the movie would clock in at 50% Fresh. That may not seem like a great score, but all it indicates is that a movie is polarizing; you might find yourself on either side of that divide.
With that in mind, the films on this list have near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores. That means almost...

There’s No Such Thing as Zombies isn’t so much a comedy about the zombie apocalypse as it is the story of three people, Carlotta, her husband Paul and his old school friend Colin.
When Colin’s bragging gets on Paul’s last nerve, Carlotta gives him a “vitamin” which Colin recognizes as Troxidil, a powerful antidepressant that also doubles as male birth control by decreasing sperm count. This really doesn’t sit well with Paul, not only was he being lied to, he was being prevented from starting the family he wanted.
At this point, we cut away to The Hunt and Christina Show, whose hosts are also talking about Troxidil, specifically allegations that it causes the dead to rise. They’ll soon be joined by Victoria Winkelhauser a...

Welcome, brave souls and thrill-seekers, to the ultimate cinematic journey through the end times! If you’ve ever wondered how you’d fare when the credits roll on civilization, you’re in the right place. Apocalypse horror movies are a macabre playground for the imagination, blending survival, terror, and a touch of fatalistic humor amidst all the chaos and rubble.
Buckle up, because we’re diving headfirst into the abyss to countdown the top 15 end-of-the-world horror movies—a collection where humanity’s twilight dances on the big screen in all its horrific glory!
Sony Pictures 15. Legion (2010)
Kicking off our list is Legion, where the forces of heaven turn against humanity, decreeing the world’s swift end. This unique apocalypse scenario pits a group of disparate individuals against a host of vengeful angels, all within the confines of a roadside diner in the desert. So what happens when your first anthology was cancelled but you’ve got round three on the back burner? Well, actually, it’s complicated. We’ve spoken previously about Mick Garris’ Masters of Horror, which brought life into the anthology genre when we needed it again. A year later, Fear Itself brings anthology horror back to primetime.
Now, if you’re me, anthologies are kind of your life. This is one of my favorite parts of Horror, and so being able to see what new takes and tales are on the horizon excites me. Fear Itself was essentially the spiritual third season of Masters. The first episode Eater drug me down the rabbit hole and before I knew...

There’s a solid chance this month’s edition of “Revenge of the Remakes” ends up as one of my favorite column entries. George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies inspire an exceptional case study about the peaceful coexistence between remakes and originals. Both filmmakers choose unique perspectives when dooming small-town America, even though the early 1970s and dawning 2010s validate eerily similar conspiracy paranoias. Stacking these Trixie-toxin thrillers back-to-back validates why remakes aren’t here to piss all over your safe, swaddling nostalgia blankets. Remakes aren’t the enemy — they’re a golden opportunity.
Romero’s The Crazies could only accomplish so much as a commentary against bureaucratic incompetence given the $270K budget. It benefits from a facelift, much like how Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes reaches its full potential as a bloodthirsty 2000s revamp. That’s not a shot at legends...

Remakes were all the rage in the 2000s. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, The Crazies, My Bloody Valentine, The Hills Have Eyes – and the list goes on and on. And then there’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A Platinum Dunes creation, the 2003 remake did what most remakes fail to do: honor the original while doing something wildly unique and equally as cool. Director Marcus Nispel, also behind the Friday the 13th remake, carves out a special place in the pantheon of horror by trusting his instincts and letting the cast play (and scream along the way). 20 years later, the bright spot in the sea of mediocre remakes still operates on all cylinders, and in many respects, outpaces the 1974 original.

The Pocket Film of Superstitions opens with a title card that reads “The Following Moving Picture Presentation May Contain Scenes of Irreverence”, and irreverent is a very apt way to describe the latest film from writer/director Thomas Lee Rutter.
It’s shot with the visual stylings of an old silent movie complete with the blue tint they used to indicate a night scene and the occasional title card. But it isn’t a silent film, there are sound effects and occasional short exchanges of dialogue. But most of the information is relayed to the viewer via narration by Shend, which is probably the best choice for a film like this.

John Rosman's "New Life" is a blistering multidimensional thriller that hits from all directions — the kind of debut filmmakers dream about. It messes with you psychologically, stokes existential dread, and drips with bodily liquids worth repulsive physical effects. Where some first features hinge on a sole signature that pulls audiences through less accomplished elements, "New Life" exposes few weaknesses. Rossman creates a small-scale apocalypse movie that becomes achingly intimate despite the threat of worldwide eradication, weighing the disease of one against the infection of many in ways unexplored by notable comparison points like Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" or the Pastor brothers' "Carriers."

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

It’s difficult to recommend or describe My Friendly Neighborhood without using the phrase “and I’m not kidding.”
Mfn is a short, speedrunner-friendly first-person survival horror game. Right from the start, it’s got a solid atmosphere of dread that’s carried by its audio design, with a setting that effectively mixes the mundane and the bizarre.
It’s also a game about fighting homicidal children’s show mascots. Where another game might have zombies or ghosts, Mfn’s corridors are infested with knockoff Muppets.
It’s the Jim Henson version of George Romero’s The Crazies, and it works a lot better than it has any right to. I’ve been trying to figure out why, and I think it’s because its developers, John & Evan Szymanski and their team, chose to play the concept absolutely straight.

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

Lynn Lowry achieved cult status early in her career, thanks to her work in the likes of George A. Romero’s The Crazies, David Cronenberg’s Shivers, and Paul Schrader’s Cat People. At the age of 75 and with over 100 acting credits under her belt, she’s still going stronger than ever.
I recently caught up with the prolific horror icon at the Shawna Shea Film Festival in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was in attendance to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her work in independent cinema, so we took the opportunity to discuss her career at length.
Born in Illinois and raised in George, Lynn moved to New York City in the late 1960s to pursue acting. Her first film role was The Battle of Love’s Return, a 1971 comedy directed by future Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman. Their meeting was pure happenstance, but Kaufman immediately saw something in the young actress.

Guns of Eden opens with Buffalo cops Megan (Alexandra Faye Sadeghian) and her partner Jeremy (Peter Johnson) running down a purse snatcher. However, when they find themselves in the middle of a convenience store robbery things don’t go as well and Megan shoots a fellow officer.
She resigns and takes up residence at the local bar until Jeremy finds her and suggests she join him and a couple of friends, friends Blake (Dominic Luongo) and Gabriella (Nicole Colon), on a camping trip. She’s initially reluctant but, since it would be a short movie otherwise, ends up going. But as they head out to the woods, something else is about to go down.

George Romero is widely known as the director responsible for creating the idea of the modern zombie, thanks to the continuing cultural impact of 1968's "Night of the Living Dead." Arguably, he could also be credited for starting the trend of pandemic films with his 1973 military thriller "The Crazies." Shot on what would be considered a shoestring budget today, Romero managed to tell a sprawling story about a mysterious biological weapon codenamed "Trixie" that infects a small town's water supply, driving them all totally insane. If you look at "The Crazies" as being patient zero, pandemic-themed entries like "Outbreak" and Steven Soderbergh's frighteningly realistic account in "Contagion" can be traced directly back to Romero's take on the subject.
"The Crazies" was made just about the time Vietnam was coming to an end, but the country had already been living with an unjust war for the better part of a decade.

Back in early 2014, it was announced that David Bruckner – who had previously directed segments of The Signal (2007) and V/H/S/ – had signed on to direct a new Friday the 13th film. Bruckner was attached to the project through two different approaches. At one point, he was working with The Autopsy of Jane Doe screenwriters Richard Naing and Ian B. Goldberg to develop a found footage Friday the 13th movie. When the found footage angle was dropped, he worked with Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca on a script that had a heavy focus on character and was supposed to be packed with ’80s songs. Dazed and Confused was a source of inspiration for that one. At the end of 2015, Bruckner moved on from Friday the 13th. He has gone on to direct The Ritual, The Night House, and the new Hellraiser movie (read our review Here)… and now, he doesn...

John Aylward, an actor best known for his portrayals of Dr. Donald Anspaugh on ER and former DNC chairman Barry Goodwin on The West Wing, died this week at his home in Seattle. He was 75.
Aylward’s death overnight Monday was confirmed by his wife Mary Fields to his longtime agent, Mitchell K. Stubbs. He had been in declining health, according to Fields.
“I was shocked. He was a wonderful actor and a phenomenal human being,” Stubbs told Deadline. “He was a dream client, a friend and a dream person.”

Born and raised in Seattle, Aylward appeared in dozens of television series over the course of his more than four-decade career, but he is perhaps best remembered for his role as Dr. Donald Anspaugh in ER. Aylward joined the NBC series in the third season in the heavily recurring role and appeared in more than 70 episodes over 12 years.

Hello, dear readers! Yesterday, we launched our 2nd annual Indie Horror Month celebration and kicked things off by taking a look back at all the pivotal independent horror from the 1970s, and this writer even took some time to celebrate a current film that perfectly encapsulates the vibes of ’70s genre cinema, Ti West’s X.
Every Saturday throughout the month of April, we here at Daily Dead will be sharing with you a series of lists focused on where you can stream all kinds of great indie horror movies that includes info from both paid and free streaming services out there. And since our celebration of ’70s independent genre films is currently underway, this writer thought it only made sense to put today’s spotlight on where to stream many of the essential indie horror films that were discussed in yesterday’s article and a few others as well.

Hello, dear readers! Today, we here at Daily Dead are kicking off our 2022 Indie Horror Month celebration, and we have a ton of killer content coming your way throughout the entire month of April that will highlight some amazing indie genre goodness created by an assortment of maverick makers from both the past and present. And for our first official piece for Ihm 2022, I thought it made sense to take a look at one of the most pivotal decades in independent horror cinema: the 1970s.
While we’ve had plenty of brilliant indie horror released here in America throughout every decade (it’s worth noting that the roots of independent horror can even be traced back 100 years to the release of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu), there were certainly several key figures who were busy making horror movies on their own terms prior to the ’70s that helped pave the way...

Even in death, it seems that George Romero still has some tricks up his sleeve. We should expect nothing less from the father of the modern zombie movie. The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 1968 with the seminal zombie film, "Night of the Living Dead." The movie would spawn a six-film zombie franchise for Romero ending in 2009 with "Survival of the Dead." In addition to the zombie franchise, the horror icon also directed "The Crazies," "Creepshow," and "The Dark Half."

As someone who has always loved the other Resident Evil film series, I was excited to see Johannes Roberts at the helm of the Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City reboot, which follows the first few installments of the popular video game series of the same name. And while this newest film does have a few issues, they weren’t enough to derail my overall enjoyment, as Roberts has done an incredible job of creating something that feels like it was plucked right out of the world of the Resident Evil games, which should make longtime fans pretty darned happy.
Based on the title alone, it probably comes as no surprise that this adaptation takes viewers into the ill-famed Raccoon City, where Umbrella Corporation has left the city in ruins now that it has achieved its nefarious goals and moved on. There are still some folks living in Raccoon City,...

Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the ’70s and ’80s
1984 Publishing, October 5, 2021
Michael Gingold (Author), Joe Dante (Foreword)
Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.
The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.

Waxwork Records and WaterTower Music are proud to present Malignant Original Motion Picture Score by Joseph Bishara. Malignant is the latest creation from Conjuring universe architect James Wan. The film marks director Wan’s return to his roots with this original horror thriller. In the film, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Joseph Bishara is an American composer, music producer, and actor best known for his work scoring films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Prodigy. He is known for his avant-garde style and unique approach to instrumentation and composition that suits horror films particularly well. Bishara disregards horror film score conventions by employing gut-wrenching string dissonance, haunting electronics, and sudden crescendos. Bishara’s Malignant score offers his distinctive style of disquieting strings, pulsing electronics, droning synths, and haunting sound design.

3 decades back Aamir Khan acted in a film called 'Raakh' directed by Aditya Bhattacharya which can be easily termed ahead of its time. The film, starring Aamir Khan, Pankaj Kapur, Supriya Pathak and Homi Wadia, was a dystopian drama in which the star plays a young man who watches helplessly as his girlfriend is raped by a group of powerful crime lords and is overwhelmed when they get away with it. He then decides to take revenge on them one by one and spiralling down into this vortex of vendetta he finds himself being destroyed from the inside. The masterpiece is currently screening at the Bandra Film Festival.
Director Aditya Bhattacharya said, "More than three decades later, I am quite overwhelmed by the continuing affection and respect for my first-born, Raakh - It is something that I couldn't have imagined whilst shooting this as a 24 year old…"

It’s only fitting that George A. Romero, who created the zombie movie as we know it, would release a film from beyond the grave. Nearly 50 years after it was completed, shelved and thought to be lost, “The Amusement Park” has returned to the land of the living — and, just as important, proven worth the wait. Romero died four years ago, but the strength of this posthumous work — to say nothing of his existing corpus — ensures that his legacy will live on.
The film begins with a fourth-wall-breaking monologue from its star, actor Lincoln Maazel, who walks through damp, empty streets while bemoaning the ways in which the elderly are prevented from fully participating in society. “Remember as you watch the film,” his soliloquy ends, “one day you will be old.”

In 1968, George A. Romero directed Night of the Living Dead, a tiny independent horror film that went on to change the face of its genre and make a permanent mark on film history itself. Five years later, Romero’s two decidedly un-Dead-like follow-ups—There’s Always Vanilla (1971) and Season of the Witch (1972)—had already vanished quickly into obscurity. He was still several years away from directing Dawn of the Dead and again becoming a worldwide horror sensation.
Perhaps simply looking to put food on the table while getting his next project (The Crazies) up and running, Romero was receptive when approached by the Lutheran Society, who wanted to create an educational film about society’s poor treatment of the elderly. With a script by Walton Cook (one of the rare Romero projects he did not write himself), Romero’s only work for hire, called The Amusement Park, was apparently so...

In 1975, the Lutheran Society commissioned young director George Romero to make a film about the challenges facing older people in society. He had already had a few hits in the horror genre - Night Of The Living Dead, The Crazies, Season Of The Witch - but suffice to say that they didn't expect quite what they got. The resulting work languished in the archives until it was restored and completed in 2019. Now, four years after his death, it's coming to screens for the first time.
For many fans, this will be the last ever chance to see a Romero film for the first time. It won't disappoint. Whilst doing exactly what he was instructed to do, Romero created something that is devastating to watch - it's a work that doesn't so much raise awareness as threaten to plunge viewers into an abyss of despair. Throughout, there...

In 1973, the Lutheran Society reached out to a young filmmaker named George A. Romero and asked him to make a film about elder abuse and ageism. The director really only had “Night of the Living Dead” under his belt at this point in his career—“The Crazies” would be released later that year, and “Martin” and “Dawn of the Dead” were still five years away—and so when the finished product didn’t satisfy those who had commissioned it, “The Amusement Park” was shelved for almost five decades.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I bring in the big guns (One Heat Minute Productions creator Blake Howard) to discuss one of the great filmmakers: Alan J. Pakula. After making a name for himself as a producer (he earned an Oscar nomination for To Kill a Mockingbird), Pakula emerged as a seminal New Hollywood director with his “paranoia trilogy:” Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974), and All the President’s Men (1976). And yet, he is rarely acknowledged in the upper-echelon of great 70s filmmakers like Coppola or De Palma.
On this episode we focus on Pakula’s underseen, unassuming western Comes a Horseman, his over-cooked domestic thriller Consenting Adults, and his final film The Devil’s Own, which stars Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Lee Broughton returns with a review of a mammoth limited edition box set dedicated to George A. Romero’s gut-wrenching zombie apocalypse opus, the first sequel to Night of the Living Dead.
