Could it be? Are the "Shark Horror" gods smiling upon us from Atlantis? Xavier Gens' Under Paris blends the bureaucratic foolhardiness of Jaws with Deep Blue Sea’s tempo. While science-based ecological themes get murky, the film shines at its most chaotic. A rogue female mako swimming France' Seine River brings shades of Dick Maas' Amsterdamned or Uncaged, varying takes on horrific (and preposterous) scenarios in major metropolitan areas. Don't look to Under Paris for grounded realism or bulletproof storytelling, but compared to the recent deluge of utterly impotent fin flicks over the last few years? Gens' aquatic thriller on Netflix is like stumbling upon the Holy Grail of Shark Horror.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) stars as oceanic wildlife researcher Sophia. Tragedy strikes when a tagged mako named Lilith turns on Sophia's diving team, including her husband, leaving Sophia with permanent pressure damage and her scuba squad deceased.

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. Last month, Lionsgate unveiled a teaser poster, which can be seen at the bottom of this article, and announced they will be giving Never Let Go a theatrical release on September 27th. Now a tailer for the film has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above!

Originally announced last year under the title Mother Land, the next film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Crawl) is now titled Never Let Go, and Lionsgate has released the official trailer this morning. Watch it below.
Never Let Go arrives in theaters on September 27, 2024. The premise for this one looks to be similar to films including A Quiet Place and Bird Box, centered on a small family unit’s struggle to survive within a world gone to hell. There’s a whole lot of snake-like imagery in this first look trailer – jump to 1:44 for a blink-and-miss-it little tease… or check out our screen-grab below – but the threat outside their door is still very much a mystery at this point in time.
All we know is… one touch is all it takes…
Academy Award winner Halle Berry is leading the film’s cast.

Aja directed from a script by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby. He also produced alongside 21 Laps’ Dan Cohen, Dan Levine and Shawn Levy with Berry, Dan Clarke, Connor Digregorio, Holly Jeter, Emily Morris and Christopher Woodrow serving as executive producers.

Cocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. There has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen. What are some of the best animal attack movies?

Update: A trailer for Never Let Go was shown during the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon today, and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance. Here’s a description of what he saw: “Halle Berry and her two kids are living in a cabin after the world ends. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. Forty-nine years after playing a major role in the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (and fourteen years after making an appearance in Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D), Richard Dreyfuss has been cast in another film that promises to be packed with aquatic thrills, Vigilante Diaries director Christian Sesma’s Into the Deep. This one managed to get all the way into post-production before catching the attention of the folks at The Daily Jaws.
Scripted by Chad Law and Josh Ridgway – who have previously collaborated on the alligator movie The Flood, the Dolph Lundgren action thriller Section 8, the biker werewolf movie Howlers, and the mystery Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop – Into the Deep has the following synopsis: A group of divers searching for sunken treasure witness the murder of drug dealers by modern-day pirates, but a killer great white is determined not to let any of them escape its waters.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Maniac (2012) was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
More and more remakes. So many remakes. Not all are good, some would even say that most remakes are trash. However, some are good, some are great even. This leads us to this movie, the remake of Maniac (watch it Here) released to the general public in 2013. While some hated it and with reason, others loved it, also with reason. The film is one of those that made changes that worked for the story and helped bring it to the new audience, who then turned around and saw the original. Well, some of them did. However, this remake didn’t exactly hit it big at the box office and it still seems to be finding its audience.

No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.
At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.
The film superfluously starts in the Cretaceous period to give...

There are a ton of bloody films out there, some of them more fun than others. Many of them were clearly made for gore hounds, and some come from pretty surprising places. Of course, the goriest films ever made change all the time as new movies keep aiming at beating that record, so every year, this could be a whole new list. These are a few of our favorite films with the highest amount of fake blood used during production:
Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992)
This horror comedy from Peter Jackson is a longtime favorite for many horror fans for the sheer amount of blood and gore seen throughout the film. The ear falling into a bowl of soup may be the grossest scene in the film, it’s definitely not the bloodiest by far. It’s the end of the world as we know it and HBO Max feels fine. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by one long-awaited post-apocalyptic adventure.
HBO’s TV adaptation of beloved video game The Last of Us premieres on Jan. 15. Created by Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin, this story will follow the game storyline of Joel (Pedro Pascal) guiding 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through a virus-ridden wasteland towards hope. It’s probably gonna be awesome.
The other big original series this month is animated mystery comedy Velma. Brought to life by Mindy Kaling, this show will be all about Scooby-Doo’s bespectacled buddy Velma Dinkley. Jinkies indeed!
There aren’t any major HBO Max original movie releases this January. The first of the month sees the arrival of Ghostbusters (1984), Hereditary, John Wick, and more. Recent theatrical release The Menu premieres on Jan.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.

The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Grégory Levasseur’s Egyptology-based Found Footage flick, The Pyramid.
Acclaimed director Alexandre Aja first rose to notoriety as a member of the early 2000s French Extremity movement after shocking audiences with the intensely gory Haute Tension (A.K.A. High Tension/Switchblade Romance). While this peculiar little slasher flick eventually led Aja to an international career as a celebrated director and producer, part of his success can be attributed to his friend and frequent collaborator, Grégory Levasseur.
From Haute Tension to The Hills Have Eyes and even Piranha 3D, Aja has always been backed up by Levasseur, who co-wrote and produced most of his projects. That’s why it stands to reason that the director would eventually pull a few strings and scramble together a budget for Levasseur to direct his first feature film, which would come in the...

Quentin Tarantino is going back to his roots.
The iconic filmmaker teams up again with “Pulp Fiction” co-screenwriter and fellow former Video Archives coworker Roger Avary to discuss the classic collection of cult films. The duo met back in 1983 when working at the famed video rental store in Manhattan Beach, California. The long-closed shop housed close to 8,000 VHS tapes and DVDs, which Tarantino purchased in 1995, the same year he and Avary won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Pulp Fiction.”
Now, in “The Video Archives Podcast,” Tarantino and Avary rewatch the original tapes from the Video Archives collection, featuring movies like “Dark Star,” “Moon Raker,” “Demonoid,” “Messenger of Death,” and “Piranha.” The podcast launches July 19 and is produced by SiriusXM subsidiary Stitcher.

Longtime friends and filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary will launch their first podcast next month on which they’ll revisit some of their favorite old B-movies and discover new ones.
Set to premiere July 19, “The Video Archives Podcast” will feature the duo rewatching and discussing movies pulled from the actual collection of VHS tapes that they used to recommend to customers when they worked at the original location of the iconic Video Archives movie rental store in Manhattan Beach, Calif., almost 40 years ago. It’s being produced with SiriusXM podcast subsidiary Stitcher.
Tarantino and Avary met at the Video Archives in 1983 where they shared a love of lesser-known films. Their encyclopedic knowledge of movies made them local celebrities, before they would go on to collaborate on the Oscar-winning screenplay for “Pulp Fiction.” Tarantino acquired the Video Archives in 1995 and rebuilt the store in his home.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. The Last Winter (2006).What I am suggesting is that the imagery of disaster…is above all the emblem of an inadequate response. I do not mean to bear down on the films for this. As far as kid movies go, The Bad Guys is one of the more welcome diversions of the year. The film is a slick and funny caper for the pre-teen set that is blessed with a cast of talented actors and animation that is so much fun that it almost makes the fart jokes forgivable.
Based on the graphic novel series by Aaron Blabey, the story focuses on a group of anthropomorphized animals led by Wolf (Sam Rockwell). The gang is feared across their city because of their unending string of robberies. When a mission goes awry, Wolf makes a bet with Governor Foxington (Zazie Beetz) that his pals can go straight and win the city’s affections. It’s all a ruse to get his hands on a priceless bauble, but it’s not long before Wolf learns that being a good boy might just be more enjoyable than being a bad dog.

Hello, dear readers! Yesterday, we launched our 2nd annual Indie Horror Month celebration and kicked things off by taking a look back at all the pivotal independent horror from the 1970s, and this writer even took some time to celebrate a current film that perfectly encapsulates the vibes of ’70s genre cinema, Ti West’s X.
Every Saturday throughout the month of April, we here at Daily Dead will be sharing with you a series of lists focused on where you can stream all kinds of great indie horror movies that includes info from both paid and free streaming services out there. And since our celebration of ’70s independent genre films is currently underway, this writer thought it only made sense to put today’s spotlight on where to stream many of the essential indie horror films that were discussed in yesterday’s article and a few others as well.

Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the ’70s and ’80s
1984 Publishing, October 5, 2021
Michael Gingold (Author), Joe Dante (Foreword)
Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.
The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.

Mad God Review: This Stop-Motion Nightmare May Be One Of The Weirdest Movies Ever Made [Beyond Fest]
Phil Tippett is a master of monsters, a proverbial God in the eyes of those who grew up watching his creatures play on screen. He's the man responsible for beloved creations in films like "Return of the Jedi," "RoboCop," "Piranha," "Starship Troopers," and, as the Dinosaur Supervisor meme makes sure we're aware, "Jurassic Park." He's spent the last three decades earning accolades creating Oscar-winning effects for the projects of other people, but now, Tippett finally got the chance to make his own movie, just the way he imagined. That is to say, with an imagination that none...

Despite stop-motion animation mostly focusing on children’s movies nowadays, with Laika and Aardman leading the charge for the medium’s cinematic output, the animation technique has always lent itself toward horror. As films like “Coraline” prove, no matter how cute the puppets work their mere movements already make them creepier than hand-drawn animation ever could. Oscar-winner VFX artist Phil Tippett recognizes this, so his feature directorial debut
