It’s safe to say Judi Dench isn’t much of an advocate for trigger warnings in the theater.
During an interview with Radio Times magazine, the Oscar winner recently joined the debate surrounding notices at the beginning of a production, alerting viewers that the content contains potentially distressing material.
“Do they do that? My God, it must be a pretty long trigger warning before King Lear or Titus Andronicus!” the Notes on a Scandal star said. “Crikey, is that really what happens now?
Although Dench understands the need for warnings under certain circumstances, she also feels it can impact the viewer’s experience while watching a stage production.
“I can see why they exist, and it is preparing people, I suppose, but if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theater, because you could be very shocked,” she explained. “Where is the surprise of seeing and understanding it in your own way?...

Prime’s prominent chart leader, Anne Hathaway’s romantic comedy The Idea of You has rekindled people’s interest in the movies exploring the topic of the romances between people with significant age differences. However, in the case of Hathaway’s movie and other similar romcoms the age-gaps are still within the bounds of law and moral.
There is a movie, brutally showing the other side of such romances. It was one of the main hits of the last year and nowadays it’s still watched by Prime Video’s viewers a lot.
Its plot revolves around an actress in the research for her upcoming role in an independent film. We learn that she is set to play Gracie, a woman, infamous for seducing a 13 year-old boy Joe when she was 36 and was imprisoned for rape of him.
The point is that Gracie and Joe are still together, 24 years after the incident,...

The season 11 premiere of Vanderpump Rules was titled “Notes on a Scandal,” and that scandal — or Scandoval — brought in a big audience.
The premiere delivered 3.2 million viewers for Bravo (including three days of delayed viewing), a 68 percent jump over the season 10 opener in February 2023. While “Notes on a Scandal” didn’t quite reach the heights of the season 10 reunion — part one of which drew 4.6 million viewers over three days, an all-time Vanderpump high — 3.2 million viewers is still a big number for any cable show.
In the key ad-sales demographic of adults 18-49, Vanderpump Rules drew 1.8 million viewers, an 85 percent improvement on the season 10 premiere. It’s also the biggest 18-49 audience for any Bravo season premiere in more than six years — since The Real Housewives of Atlanta season 10 debut in November 2017.
Those figures don’t include streaming, NBCUniversal doesn’t regularly release detailed viewing data for Peacock. NBCU says viewing...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Notes on a Scandal,” “Last Summer,” and “May December.“]
“May December” has been called a dark comedy and a campy take on “Persona” (though director Todd Haynes disdains the “camp” label). It inspired an unexpected Netflix meme-based social media push capitalizing on the shirtless scenes of supporting star Charles Melton, and now this tale of abuse has been nominated for, of all things, a comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. (Netflix submitted the film as such.)
It seems that “May December” has led to every conversation but what it’s actually about: grooming.
The film tracks the fallout of Gracie, an adult woman (Julianne Moore) who seduced a 12-year-old boy (played as an adult by Charles Melton), had his children, went to jail for her misdeeds, and — eventually — married her victim. Natalie Portman portrays Elizabeth, an actress playing Gracie in a big-screen adaptation of her life.

Todd Haynes' "May December" is the most deliberately uncomfortable movie of 2023, but you owe yourself a viewing. Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) is a middle-aged woman with a husband, Joe (Charles Melton), less than half her age; they met when he was in 7th grade and she groomed him.
Before you ask, no, depiction is not an endorsement here. Gracie is self-pitying and manipulative, Joe is trapped in arrested development, and the movie hammers in how destructive their "relationship" has been for him; part of him wants to escape but doesn't know how. "May December" enters murky waters to ask tough questions about the audience's relationship to sensationalism.
As Haynes has acknowledged, Samy Burch's screenplay is loosely inspired by the life of Mary Kay Letourneau, a real predator who married her victim Vili Fualaau after being convicted in 1997. These events were a media sensation and have been echoed in film before,...

Dame Judi Dench has done pretty well for herself in an acting career that has lasted over half a century. For her film acting alone, Dench has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one for her supporting performance in 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love.” She also earned nine Golden Globe noms for her film work (including a win for 1997’s “Mrs. Brown”) and three for her TV work, including a win for 2000’s “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells.” She has also received 13 nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award, winning twice (for “Shakespeare in Love” and 2000’s “Chocolat”). And if that wasn’t enough, she won a 1999 Tony Award for her performance in “Amy’s View.”
Let’s take a photo gallery tour of her 12 greatest films, ranked from worst to best. It includes the movies mentioned above, plus “Notes on a Scandal,” “Philomena,” “Iris” and more.

Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy amassed 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins between the three films while the prequel “The Hobbit” series garnered a further seven nominations. Out of those 35 Academy Award bids, however, only one came for acting. That was for Sir Ian McKellen when he was nominated in 2002 for Best Supporting Actor for “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” It was Jim Broadbent who won that category that year, for “Iris,” so Middle Earth performers have been overlooked somewhat for their part in the huge success of the fantasy film series. However, a handful of thespians who have appeared in either “The Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” (or both) have found Oscar success elsewhere in their career. Here’s the rundown.

The story embodies twists and turns with character-driven, surprising storytelling. Off-beat humour contrasts with high-octane action sequences against the spectacular backdrop of the beautiful, windswept Yorkshire coastline.
Also starring is Tchéky Karyo, Joanna Scanlan, Craig Fairbrass and Phil Daniels.
Also in trailers – “What are you not telling me?” Trailer drops for series ‘Culprits’

Studiocanal has revealed the brand spanking new red band trailer for ‘Wicked Little Letters’, the razor-sharp British comedy from director Thea Sharrock.
Based on a true story, a 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, the feature follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Philip Glass has been composing soundscapes of ambient intrigue for documentary filmmaker Errol Morris for decades, from the groundbreaking true-crime doc “The Thin Blue Line” to the Robert McNamara portrait “The Fog of War.” Now, the three-time Oscar-nominated modernist composer and co-writer Paul Leonard-Morgan have crafted the original score for Morris’ John le Carré documentary “The Pigeon Tunnel,” the Apple TV+ documentary that opens Friday, October 20. Also premiering that day will be the film’s original soundtrack from Platoon, and IndieWire shares an exclusive track off the album below.
“It is our pleasure to share ‘The Pigeon Tunnel’ soundtrack,” said Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan, adding that “the orchestral journey this score took us on, combing the cimbalom of ’60s espionage soundtracks with symphonic orchestral work, led to 80 minutes of score, almost the entirety of the film.”

Cate Blanchett has boarded arthouse favorite Guy Maddin’s latest movie, Rumours, which is set to start shooting on Oct. 9, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The indie has been written and will be directed by Maddin with longtime collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson. Their last joint film was The Green Fog, an experimental feature that combed through San Francisco-produced films and TV shows as it followed the structure of Vertigo.
Blanchett played a composer-conductor whose reputation is suddenly shattered by revelations of her personal life in Tár. Her other film credits include The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, for which she won Oscars, as well as Elizabeth, Notes on a Scandal, I’m Not There and Carol.
Her star turn in Rumours is seen as the latest A-lister and auteur collaboration as Canadian indie film looks to break out into the global market with distribution and critical acclaim. Maddin’s latest...

One of the most significant acquisitions of the Cannes Film Festival this year was Todd Haynes’ May December, which, just before its NYFF debut later this week, has finally gotten a trailer. The film stars Natalie Portman as an actress staying with the woman (Julianne Moore) that she’s about to play in a movie. The woman in question is a former teacher who had an affair with one of her students and, once she got out of jail, married the now-grown man (played by Charles Melton) in question.
Younger readers may not remember the Mary Kay Letourneau case, but in the late nineties, it was huge news. An elementary-school teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau, had an affair with Vili Fualaau, her 12-year-old student and was convicted of second-degree felony rape of a child. While she nearly got off with a plea deal, while awaiting sentencing, she was discovered with the...

The critic of The Critic is the type who might occasionally exist in real life, but seems to loom far larger in fictional tales by artists who evidently have little love for the profession. As played by Ian McKellen, Jimmy Erskine is an erudite brute. Whatever love he once held for the theater is less apparent these days than the savage delight he takes in ripping performers and productions to shreds, and the satisfaction he takes in the status and influence afforded him by his job.
The Critic, directed by Anand Tucker, is the story of how far he’ll go when that position is threatened. Given that the film is scripted by Patrick Marber (of Closer and Notes on a Scandal), it’s little surprise he’ll go very far indeed. And given that he’s performed by McKellen, it’s safe to bet on a ferocious lead turn.

If you want to give a great actor a role he can sink his teeth into with almost unseemly glee, there can’t be many better ways than to cast him as a critic in a period melodrama. That, at least, seems to be the idea behind “The Critic,” Anand Tucker’s tale of a nefarious theater reviewer in 1930s London starring Ian McKellen as the kind of awful person who must have been a lot of fun to play.
It is not, perhaps, a role that would challenge the magnificent McKellen much, but who needs a challenge when you can spit out viciously witty bon mots while wearing fancy duds and being lit at all times for maximum dramatic effect? And while McKellen’s Jimmy Erskine is a villain to remember, he isn’t a one-dimensional baddie. He’s a proudly gay man who can be arrested for who...

The new biographical drama “Golda” features Helen Mirren in a transformative role as Golda Meir, the so-called “Iron Lady of Israel” who faced high-stakes responsibilities and decisions during the Yom Kippur War. Written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Guy Nattiv, the Bleecker Street contender is Mirren’s first big play at a potential Academy Award nomination in many years, so let’s look back at her four Oscar races.
With a career in film going back to the 1960s, Mirren saw her first Oscar nomination in 1994 in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in “The Madness of King George.” Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this biographical comedy-drama tells the story of King George III and how his Lieutenants tried to adjust the rules to run the country after he went mad. Mirren played his wife, Queen Charlotte, and she was one of four citations for the movie at the 67th Academy Awards,...

Anne-Marie Duff has won the Supporting Actress gong at the BAFTA TV Awards for her performance in Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters.
The award is Apple TV+’s first BAFTA TV performance award, after two documentaries won at last year’s BAFTA Crafts.

Exclusive: His Dark Materials and Enola Holmes scribe Jack Thorne, a “proud” member of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, has paused work on two projects in solidarity with the WGA strikers.
The multi-bafta winner, who is based in the UK, told us: “For me the crucial issue of the strike is about writer minimums and protecting young writers. We need to be looking after these young writers to ensure they have a career and can run their own shows and be the generation that does even better with television.”
Thorne spoke to us a couple of times this week, including at London’s National Theatre for the opening night of his acclaimed new play The Motive And The Cue, directed by Sam Mendes.
However, the in-demand writer wouldn’t be drawn on which projects he has paused work on, only noting that one is a film and one a series.

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Actress are Cate Blanchett (“Tar”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our current odds indicate that Yeoh (82/25) will take the prize, followed in order by Blanchett (18/5), Williams (9/2), Riseborough (9/2), and de Armas (9/2).
Blanchett, who triumphed here in 2014 for “Blue Jasmine,” is the only past Oscar winner in this lineup. She now belongs to a group of 20 women with at least five Best Actress nominations apiece, with her previous unsuccessful bids having come for “Elizabeth” (1999), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), and “Carol” (2016). She also has a supporting victory to her name for “The Aviator” (2005) as well as two more notices in that category for “Notes on a Scandal” (2007) and “I’m Not There” (2008). Her overall nomination total of eight is the one of the highest for an actress, behind Meryl Streep (21), Katharine Hepburn (12), and Bette Davis...

Following a 16-year hiatus from feature filmmaking, “In the Bedroom” and “Little Children” writer-director Todd Field reemerged in 2022 to unleash his first original creation on the world (his previous films were adaptations). “TÁR” — an engrossing fictional character study and a deep analysis of how and why power is abused — is now up for six Oscars, including Best Picture. Since he was previously nominated for producing “In the Bedroom,” he could follow Jim Burke (“Green Book”) and Dan Janvey and Peter Spears (“Nomadland”) as the fourth person in five years to take the academy’s top prize on his second bid.

In the two dozen years since she received her first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, Cate Blanchett has become one of the most-recognized performers in the organization’s history. With her 2023 lead notice for “Tar,” she ties Meryl Streep’s record for most film SAG Award bids. If she prevails on her 18th general nomination, she will follow Daniel Day-Lewis, Renée Zellweger, and Viola Davis as only the fourth person to ever take home three SAG trophies for individual film acting.
On her fifth Best Film Actress outing, Blanchett faces three category newcomers and one heavily-feted veteran. The one whose SAG Awards resume most closely rivals hers is Davis, who is seeking her third win here for “The Woman King” following victories for “The Help” (2012) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021). The other three categories she has conquered are Best Film Ensemble (“The Help”), Best TV Drama Actress, and Best Film Supporting Actress.

At the age of 73 and after working as an actor for nearly five decades, Bill Nighy has finally earned his first individual nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Nighy is nominated for Best Actor for his performance as government bureaucrat, Rodney Williams, in Oliver Hermanus’s film “Living.” He was nominated for Best Cast in a Motion Picture for being part of the ensemble in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” in 2012.
Like Nighy, all the other nominees in the Best Actor category are making their first appearance as individual nominees: Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Adam Sandler (“Hustle”). Fraser won a SAG Award for Best Cast as part of the ensemble of “Crash” in 2005 and Butler was also nominated in that category for “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood” in 2019.

Cate Blanchett is officially C8 Blanchett. With her Best Actress Oscar nomination for “TÁR” on Tuesday, Blanchett has joined the small group of performers with eight acting nominations.
Just six other people have earned exactly eight bids: Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, Judi Dench, Geraldine Page, Peter O’Toole and Glenn Close. All have won at least once except for O’Toole and Close, who share the record for the most nominations without a victory. Only nine people have received more than eight nominations, led by 21-time nominee Meryl Streep.

Blanchett’s slate of eight is comprised of five Best Actress bids and three Best Supporting Actress ones. Cate Blanchett is basking in the admiration of queer “TÁR” fans.
Oscar winner Blanchett, who recently was awarded a Golden Globe for her turn as fictional queer conductor Lydia Tár, reacted to her status as a lesbian icon.
“Yeah, baby! That’s so nice,” Blanchett said during an interview with Attitude Magazine alongside co-star Nina Hoss. “Don’t know what it means but it’s nice. Yeah, cool, I’ll take it.” (Video is below.)
Blanchett has also starred in famous LGBTQ+ films like Todd Haynes’ “Carol” and Richard Eyre’s “Notes on a Scandal.”
The iconic actress addressed how “TÁR” writer-director Todd Field avoided stereotypes when it came to penning the character of Lydia who is accused of sexual misconduct with young musicians while being married to a famed violinist (Hoss).
“The characters are so nuanced. We had a lot of time to discuss their backstory in great detail...
