Man Versus Machine
Two men want a kiss from a pretty lady. She suggests they race for the honor, one in his automobile, the other on his horse.
It's a pleasant short subject for the year it was made as they race around a closed, circular road around a corpse of trees, the lead shifting between the two in each circuit. The ending comes out of the sky, and is quite amusing. The camera set-up for the race is simple, with an unmoving camera catching the two as they move past each point, and there is actually some tension; this, after all, was 1904, and the race looks like a fair one, and the prize from beautiful Dolly Lupone is a nice stake.
Director Lewis Fitzhamon also appears as the rider. He had risen to prominence as a steeplechase rider. He would direct 500 shorts and features by the end of his movie career. He would live until 1961, dying at the age of 92.
