Tyler James Williams has experienced several different kinds of fandom since childhood, starting with films like “Unaccompanied Minors,” and then his starring role in “Everybody Hates Chris,” and even a stint on “The Walking Dead.” But there’s nothing that compares to the passionate audience of teachers who have gravitated his latest series, ABC’s hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.”
On this episode, Williams talks about the show’s resonance, his experience as a child actor, where his character’s relationship with Quinta Brunson’s character might be heading and so much more. Listen below!
“It’s such a blessing that they feel so represented by it,” Williams tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast. “Now I feel like, if there’s a teacher within ten blocks of me, I’m going to know about it. They’re going to say something. I didn’t realize how much this show resonated with...

We’ve spoken before about how…strange the current-gen console wars really are. In some ways, it feels like we’re still waiting for this generation of console gaming to properly begin. Of course, so long as most gamers need to choose between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, the debate about which console had the absolute best year will inevitably rage on.
Just as we did last year, we’re going to weigh in on the current console wards by assigning each major current console 1 to 3 points in five different categories. Here’s an overview of the categories we’ll be using to rate each console’s year:
Sales – How many units of each next-gen console were sold in 2022? This category is based on the most recently published official sales figure as well as the most reliable available estimates.

As Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno series continues, the company needed some fresh blood to handle the newest titles, and Koji Shiraishi, one of the masters of J-horror, who has recently started moving into new paths as in the case of “A Beast in Love” seemed like an ideal candidate. The result is “Safe Word”, a movie dealing with the world of Bdsm, paralleling it with the world of idols while including the meta element of the mockumentary. The result is quite interesting.
Misa The Killer is an underground idol, who, as the movie begins, is being filmed closely by a female director for a documentary. One day, during one of her performances, the trans manager of Bdsm club “H” catches her during a rage fit and decides to headhunt her to become a dominatrix in his establishment. If you shamelessly embrace the holiday season, then you probably have a list of must-watch movies to celebrate the season. But let me introduce you to one that you have either never heard of or completely forgot about: Unaccompanied Minors. This movie came out in 2006 and has fallen under the radar as far as Christmas movies go. Despite it being one of my favorites as a kid, even I forgot how much I enjoyed this feel-good (yet critically panned) family film.
Picture this: five kids are separately traveling alone on Christmas Eve. A major snowstorm leaves them stranded at the airport in a room full of loud, messy, and chaotic unaccompanied minors. They decide to make the best of their situation with some playful antics, which only makes the man in charge of the airport very, very angry. The movie turns this quirky group into holiday outlaws who are being chased airport officials.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

Manifest Season 2 Episode 11
On the surface, this week’s Manifest episode appears to be all about mending relationships. Zeke reconciles with his dad, Michaela and Jared put their past behind them, and Ben renews his trust in the callings. Like the phoenix from Tj’s vision, their faith rises from the ashes of doubt and mistrust, and from that thematic standpoint, “Unaccompanied Minors” is successful. The counterpoint to that theme, however, lies in the increasing dread surrounding the three shadows and Saanvi’s loss of hospital privileges, and we’re no closer to a death date solution or a response to the Major’s scrutiny than we were before.
Adrian’s cynical view of the callings isn’t without merit. Yes, Ben’s train vision combined with Tj’s phoenix and Cal’s lullaby led them to Zeke’s dad in the Bowery Street subway station,...

(This interview contains some major spoilers for “Last Christmas,” so if you haven’t seen the film and want to go in blind, you might not want to read this.)
It’s been a long time since a Christmas movie has caused the sort of uproar that “Last Christmas” was received with when it hit theaters back in November. But it’s also unusual for a Christmas movie to rock the boat the way Paul Feig’s film did.
The issue at hand, I think, is that “Last Christmas” was marketed as what appeared to be a standard romantic comedy with Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. But, in the end, it really defied that label and went off in a direction that caught pretty much everyone off guard with a huge twist in the third act that recontextualizes everything that came before.

Paul Feig’s last Christmas movie, “Unaccompanied Minors,” wasn’t quite the success the director had hoped. In fact, he didn’t think he’d ever do another holiday movie — but when Emma Thompson sent him the script for “Last Christmas,” he knew he had to give it a shot.
“I did a Christmas movie 13 years ago for Warner Bros., which did not do well,” Feig told TheWrap laughing. “I was like, ‘I don’t need to do another one of those.’ But then Emma Thompson sent him the script out of the blue, and everyone knows whenever Emma sends you a script, you open it up.”
His heart sank when it was called “Last Christmas,”– he rightly feared a visit from the Ghost of Horrible Holiday Movies Past. But the minute he started reading the script, cowritten by Bryony Kimmings, he quickly realized it was much more than a cliché Christmas flick.

People don’t generally think of a musician’s Christmas albums as their best work — unless that musician is named Bing or Mariah — but fans still enjoy that rush of holiday familiarity and sentimentality. So think of “Last Christmas” as director Paul Feig’s Christmas album; it won’t be the first comedy anyone thinks about in his accomplished filmography, but viewers might find themselves reaching for it come December all the same.
I’ve seen more than my share of Christmas films, and “Last Christmas” scratches a lot of my holiday-movie itches while also delivering what I want from a Paul Feig movie. Those cameos, incidentally, are a Feig tradition going all the way back to his last Christmas movie, 2006’s underappreciated “Unaccompanied Minors.”
This isn’t as hearty a repast as, say, “A Simple Favor” or “Bridesmaids,” but if you just want to stuff your face with a sticky pudding,...

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.

It’s that time of year, and of month, again. October means Halloween, pumpkins and trick-or-treating, but now is also when we get to feast our eyes upon all the new horror movies coming to Netflix.
Of course, we’ll be losing a few of our favorites, too. When September ends, Eight Legged Freaks and Ghost Ship, among others will be gone. If you’re a fan of witches, cursed statues and Stephen King, though, then next month is your time.
For starters, we have 2009’s The Figurine arriving on the streaming platform, which is reminiscent of a certain Supernatural episode involving a lucky rabbit’s foot. It follows two boys who find a cursed statue in the woods that gives whoever finds it seven years of good luck, followed by seven years of the opposite.
Another adaptation of a King horror novella, In The Tall Grass, is also on the way.

Veteran director Tamra Davis will helm Fox’s female engineer comedy “Turned On.”
Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson are producing for Feigco Entertainment, where 20th Century Fox has been developing the script for the past two years. The studio bought the script in 2016 from Charlie Kesslering, an assistant to “The Late Late Show” host James Corden, about a socially awkward engineer who creates an android to fill in for her. The scheme backfires when robot becomes self-actualized.
Davis broke into show business in 1986 as the director of music videos for N.W.A, Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys and Black Flag. She began directing feature films with 1992’s “Guncrazy,” followed by “Billy Madison,” “Half Baked,” and “Crossroads.” Davis also has multiple TV credits including “Still the King,” “Younger,” “My Name Is Earl,” and “Everybody Hates Chris.”
Feig’s directing credits include “Unaccompanied Minors,” “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” “The Heat,” and the upcoming crime thriller “A Simple Favor.

Paul Feig is a self-described “Peanuts” expert, which is why he was the perfect producer to shepherd “The Peanuts Movie” for 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios. Since creating the beloved short-lived series “Freaks and Geeks,” Feig has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most trusted voices in comedy. He followed up his directorial debut “Unaccompanied Minors” with the global hit “Bridesmaids” and his career has taken off from there, with the Melissa McCarthy vehicles “The Heat” and “Spy” grossing $229 million and $235 million worldwide, respectively. Feig stepped away from the editing room of “Ghostbusters” to talk to.

Louie, Season 5, Episode 6: “Sleepover”
Written by Louis C.K. (story by C.K. and Pamela Adlon)
Directed by Louis C.K.
Airs Thursdays at 10:30pm Et on FX
A few episodes back, Louie had a contentious conversation with the proprietor of a kitchenware store, who insisted that if the young seemed to be outpacing him, it was a sure sign that things were going well, and that the future would be in capable hands – hands like those of his daughters, Lilly and Jane. In the opening of “Sleepover,” Louie takes Lilly to Broadway to see a 60s-era play (actually conceived for Louie) with a star-studded cast (John Lithgow, Michael Cera, Glenn Close, and returning Louie guest Matthew Broderick) , and is distressed to see her using her phone during the performance. Paul Feig has been on a bit of a roll in the last few years. While his foray into feature filmmaking was the poorly-received Unaccompanied Minors, in 2011 he silenced all critics with the hit Bridesmaids. Not only was that movie a blockbuster success - pulling in $288 million globally on a reported $32.5 million budget - he followed it up with The Heat, which performed on the same high level (making $229 million on a $43 million budget). He's currently in post-production on his next project, the Melissa McCarthy-led action comedy Spy, but now reports say that he is ready to jump on to his first major franchise. Insider sources have informed The Hollywood Reporter that Paul Feig is now the number one candidate to take over the director's chair for Ghostbusters 3. The position has been vacant since March, as Ivan Reitman - the filmmaker behind Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II - decided...

After blogging about my favourite Halloween movies this past October, I thought I’d impart my nerdy wisdom upon you for the holiday season and give you a rundown of just what movies I’ll be watching this Christmas. After all it wouldn’t be Christmas without the family sat round the TV watching a movie whilst the festive feast cooks in the oven (of course not everyone gets to watch the movie – someone has to cook)
For me Christmas movies are split into two categories: Christmas Mainstays and Christmas Madness. Mainstays are those films that you always watch during the festive season, those movies that are constantly shown on TV during the holiday. And then there’s what I call Christmas Madness – these are the movies that only the seasoned holiday movie veterans choose to watch at this time of year. Beware you have to be strong-willed (and strong-stomached...

In 2011, Paul Feig‘s Bridesmaids became a break out hit. Feig had mostly been known as a TV director up until that point (so we won’t remind you about Unaccompanied Minors). That’s not meant as a put down in any way, the man worked on some great shows like The Office and Arrested Development, but Bridesmaids was bigger than anything he’d done before. It was a rare animal indeed, an R-rated comedy with a predominantly female cast. But it worked and now Feig is back with his take on the buddy cop comedy starring two women in the lead roles instead of men. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. There’s this cop right? And he’s hot-headed and crude, hates authority and refuses to play by the rules. And then he ends up getting partnered with this totally straight-laced dude, a real square, I...

Director Paul Feig is now exactly where he should be: the world is his oyster after helming the 2011 comedy hit, "Bridesmaids.” A film that went on to become the top grossing R-rated female comedy of all time, domestically surpassing “Sex and the City.” But it actually took a few years and probably a lot longer than it should have. After creating the beloved cult show "Freaks & Geeks" (which was canceled in 2000 after one season of 18 episodes), the writer/director was supposed to take on a young adult novel adaptation called “Stargirl,” but the project never materialized. Instead he Instead he directed the forgettable "Unaccompanied Minors" in 2006. And if that movie was unremarkable, the excellent TV CV that followed -- he directed classic episodes of “Arrested Development,” “The Office,” 30 Rock," "Mad Men," "Bored to Death" and "Parks and...

Having worked together on Paul Feig's sophomore directorial feature "Unaccompanied Minors," as well as on episodes of "Arrested Development," it seems Tony Hale has formed a pretty friendship with the director, and is now joining Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the buddy cop comedy "The Heat." While details on the plot are still unknown -- and likely a bit in flux as Katie Dippold’s script is now getting a rewrite courtesy of Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“Bad Teacher,” “The Office,” “Year One”) -- if you add up McCarthy + Bullock + cop comedy, it should speak for itself. As for Hale, he'll be playing a man arrested for soliciting a prostitute. "The Heat" is slated to hit theaters on April 5, 2013. In case you're wondering what Scott Stewart -- the auteur behind "Legion" and "Priest" -- is doing next, he's helming the microbudget supernatural...

We’re not sure if that means he’ll just pop up for a quick gag, but we’re hoping it indicates he’ll stick around to provide bumbling laughs.Given Hale...

Yet another relatively slow week in terms of movie news, but with the Sundance Film Festival officially kicking off this weekend, expect all of that to change in the coming days.
