This episode seems to be written as they went along.
Jack Albertson is wasted in this role as a drunk. He was supposed to be a hopeless sot but we learn he was sober enough to amass a fortune, doesn't make much sense. The writers seem to have contempt for the audience The story line might be discussed in great detail by other reviewers so I will just give my take.
Jeanette Nolan plays Dirty Sally, an impoverished slattern that lives in a hovel with an unquenchable thirst for libations.
Nolan, whatever the inspiration; pulls out her dentures to sink her gums into this role, the toothless Sally is barely intelligible ; (she sounds like Donald Duck with a mouthful of wet bread) I found this character disgusting not enchanting.
Nolan's poor attempt at method acting does not add any poignancy or depth to Sally, I found the denture removal was unsavory.
The episode becomes downright implausible as the wealthy man played by Albertson for no apparent reason becomes besotted by the repulsive crone, it is a transparent dramatic ploy to add some happy turn. There was no chemistry between Albertson and Nolan and it was awkward watching Albertson's character grope for affection.
He could have almost any woman but he fawned for the dried up hag Sally.
Thankfully Gunsmoke's misses were marginal relative to the body of work through the years
