Reddest of the red states
A teen in AnneMarie Johnson's class gave birth to a baby in a ditch and the body of said infant is found in the trash later on. We know right away the baby
was A.J. Johnson's, we don't know what happened to it.
The pregnancy and birth send Althea Tibbs on a crusade for birth control and sex education. Mississippi is of of the reddest of red states and it's those areas of the USA that the most teen pregnancies.
It all sends AnneMarie Johnson into a furious battle with her Vice Principal John Popwell about sex education. Johnson does something that sends Popwell into orbit.
Sadly this is today's Mississippi as well as 1989's.
