Decent murder mystery episode... finally!
When Luck Ran Out begins with a veterinarian being murdered by an unknown assailant. Later, Quincy (Jack Klugman) and his latest girlfriend, Annie O'Connor (Katherine Justice), are enjoying an afternoon at the racetrack when the prize-winning horse of Quincy's friend, Nelson Spencer (Craig Stevens), suddenly collapses and dies. Annie works as an insurance investigator for the company that wrote the $2 million policy on the horse and becomes suspicious of Nelson which causes conflict between her and Quincy as she continues to pursue the case.
Considering how poor some of the Season 7 episodes were preceding this one, I thought this was a huge improvement as we finally get a murder mystery featured again. There are a few oddities in that Quincy takes a backseat to his girlfriend in this investigation which is unusual and everyone seems way more concerned about the dead horse rather than the veterinarian who was murdered. If you can get past these issues as well as the sudden stupidity of the otherwise smart Annie going up on a roof with a known killer in the final scenes, then this is a reasonably good and entertaining episode.
Overall I found this to be an enjoyable and refreshing episode that returns to the roots of Quincy as a murder mystery series which has been sorely missed during Season 7 so far.
