Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.
Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. Martin McDonagh directed Farrell to his first Golden Globe win (Best Actor for “In Bruges”), and Yorgos Lanthimos led Farrell to his second Best Actor Globe nomination, this time for “The Lobster.”
And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

You’d lie if you say there is no interest in crime flicks, as they not only offer you to peep into the underworld and the lives of those who break law and order, but also let you be partially involved in the onscreen adventures and showdowns. Yes, the genre’s lovers can rewatch The Godfather, Casino or Goodfellas, but what about something new?
Here are 6 overlooked crime gems you need to discover, according to Redditors.
Lucky Number Slevin (2006)
First comes a star-studded neo-noir thriller, following a man who ends up in the middle of a showdown between two rival New York crime lords: The Rabbi and the Boss. Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley and Morgan Freeman are really convincing here.

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.
Sugar – The Plot
The titular John Sugar (Farrell) works as a private investigator, focusing on missing persons cases. His techniques are odd, and his partner Ruby (Kirby) demands he take a break. Despite a well-earned vacation, Sugar cannot resist a call from Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), a famed Hollywood producer. However, Siegel’s granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. Despite drug abuse in her past,...

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

Actor Colin Farrell has been a popular name in the entertainment industry since the early 2000s. Although the actor has appeared in various movies throughout his career, a lot of people only associate him with the role of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot / The Penguin in 2022’s The Batman.

Farrell’s fans have often pointed out that the actor has performed in better movies, particularly in director Martin McDonagh’s 2008 movie, In Bruges. Not many people know that Farrell initially turned down the offer, but McDonagh wasn’t taking no for an answer. Ultimately, Farrell appeared as Ray in the movie, earning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Tales of Babylon, an Indie dark crime comedy by Pelayo De Lario, is a testament to why I love cinema. Pelayo de Lario is not yet an established name in the industry, but I have a feeling that it’s going to happen very soon. This movie is also a reason why I like British humor. Well, I’m not going to lie, British humor can be pretty disturbing and even very contextual, but it’s also quite eccentric and deadpan nonetheless. Perhaps the most accurate word to describe this form of humor would be ‘cheeky.’ Coming back to this movie, one can’t help but draw similarities between Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, Taratino’s Pulp Fiction, and Pelayo De Lario’s Tales of Babylon. As a matter of fact, one of the characters quite openly breaks the fourth wall by referring to Pulp Fiction during...

Ah, Christmas! While the notion of peace of earth and goodwill towards men makes this the warmest time of the year, Christmas isn’t always so cozy on the silver screen. Many of our favourite action flicks use the holidays as a backdrop, with some of them using the yuletide setting to add an extra layer of hopelessness to the proceedings – I’m looking at you, First Blood. Another Blue Christmas classic is director Martin McDonagh’s first feature-length film, In Bruges, a darkly comic character study of two hitmen on the run who set up shop in a titular quaint city in Belgium. The two hitmen are beautifully played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, whose pairing was so potent that McDonagh retimed them 14 years later for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

The only certainty in life is death. What actually happens when you reach that inevitable end has long been the subject of philosophical debate and in Death & Ramen, filmmaker Tiger Ji takes us on the poignant final journey of a ramen chef who finds himself at the crossroads of life and death. His genre-blending buddy comedy features an awkward grim reaper, played by Matt Jones whose routine job is disturbed by a puking Bobby Lee whose only desire before facing the afterlife is a steaming hot bowl of Kimchi Ramen. Tiger’s short takes us on this contemplative, hilarious journey with tact, nuance and a deep consideration of life and what may lay beyond it. It’s not easy to create a film that opens with a suicide attempt that makes you laugh and hanker for ramen in equal measure, but Tiger has done exactly that and Death & Ramen manages...

Yippee-Ki-Yay, Moviegoers! Die Hard will be back in theaters next week, just in time for Christmas. But it’s not a Christmas movie…is it? It’s debated year after year: does the 1988 action flick qualify as a holiday film or not? According to many, yes. The holiday is even mentioned in AMC’s write-up: “A New York City cop faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a hostile invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.”
On the topic, we made our own case a few years ago that Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Personally, I can’t take that stance. Die Hard qualifies as “Christmas-adjacent”, like Lethal Weapon, In Bruges and Eyes Wide Shut. Christmas is part of the films in one way or another – typically being set during the holiday season – but it’s not a big enough part...

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.
No character descriptions have been revealed.

If critical admiration were tracked like baseball stats, writer/director Martin McDonagh would easily be an All-Star. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. After winning an Academy Award in 2004 for “Six Shooter,” his first live action short film (which starred Brendan Gleeson in the beginning of a beautiful partnership), McDonagh went on to write and direct four contemporary classics: “In Bruges” (2008), “Seven Psychopaths” (2012), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022).
In addition to his film success, McDonagh (in his spare time) is one of the most prominent playwrights of his generation, with acclaimed productions both on Broadway and in London’s West End. The success of his plays, many of which are set in the small towns and villages of Ireland, have been much-awarded on both sides of the pond,...

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tar,” and “Triangle of Sadness.” Our odds currently indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Banshees of Inisherin” (18/5), “Tar” (9/2), “The Fabelmans” (9/2), and “Triangle of Sadness” (9/2).
For the fifth time in six years, multiple original writing nominees also picked up directing and producing bids. In fact, in a historic first, all five movies in this lineup are also in the running for Best Director, with Tony Kushner (“The Fabelmans”) being the only original scenarist not nominated there as well. He shares his writing notice with the film’s director, Steven Spielberg, who now has 22 Oscar bids to his name and has previously won for helming “Schindler’s List” (1994) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and producing the former.

The only downside of Ke Huy Quan being a lock for the best supporting actor win at the Oscars is that you don’t get to hear much from the other nominees as a result. And this is a category full of interesting performances and actors at all stages of their careers.
All will be celebrated during the Academy Awards, which airs live Sunday on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. There’s still time to catch up on their performances before the show.
Here’s a bit more about the contenders:
Brian Tyree Henry
While filming “Causeway”, Jennifer Lawrence would sometimes finish a scene with Brian Tyree Henry and say to him, “You’re going to get nominated for an Oscar” and then just walk away.
Henry was a little baffled at the time, but Lawrence (a four-time nominee and one-time winner) was right.
“She was unforgiving in reminding me that this was possible.

It may be easy to forget that acclaimed writer Martin McDonagh — the mind behind nine-time Oscar nominated film “The Banshees of Inisherin” — has never won an Academy Award for writing. He has earned Best Original Screenplay nominations for “In Bruges” in 2009, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018 and now for “Banshees” in 2023, and he even won back in 2006 for Best Live Action Short for “Six Shooter,” but the writing prize has been elusive. This year, he is in a close contest with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s script for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Might this nail-biting race shake out for McDonagh exactly as it did back in 2018, when the “Three Billboards” scribe ultimately lost to Jordan Peele for “Get Out”?

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Todd Field (“Tar”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”), and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”). Our odds currently show that Kwan and Scheinert – aka the Daniels – are most likely to win (16/5), followed in order by Spielberg (19/5), McDonagh (9/2), Field (9/2), and Östlund (9/2).
Spielberg is the only returning directing contender in the bunch, with eight past bids under his belt for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1978), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1982), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1983), “Schindler’s List” (1994), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), “Munich” (2006), “Lincoln” (2013), and “West Side Story” (2022). He prevailed on both his fourth and fifth outings and shared in a Best Picture win as a producer of “Schindler’s List.” This new notice makes him the first back-to-back directing nominee since 2015 and 2016 champion Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman” and “The Revenant”).

Seventeen years after his first and only short film, “Six Shooter” (2004), brought him his sole Oscar win for Best Live Action Short, Martin McDonagh is seeking his first Best Director victory for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The 2022 black comedy is his fourth feature film, after 2008’s “In Bruges,” 2012’s “Seven Psychopaths” and 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Although the last amassed seven Oscar notices, McDonagh’s direction was overlooked. Now that he has finally garnered enough support within the directors’ branch for a nomination, it might indeed be time for him to conquer his first above-the-line category.
The Best Director contenders nominated against McDonagh are Todd Field (“Tar”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Ruben Ostlund (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”). Martin McDonagh, the British-Irish Tony-nominated playwright and Oscar-nominated filmmaker who often sets his work in Ireland, is the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. The 52-year-old was being honored by the fest as one of its Outstanding Directors of the Year Award recipients in recognition of his work on 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin, for which he is currently nominated for producing, directing and writing Oscars.
McDonagh is equally revered by the theater and filmmaking communities.

Look at any list of 2022’s best movies and you’ll see The Banshees of Inisherin near the top. Martin McDonagh’s latest film uses the fallout between the best friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) to examine masculinity, the cost of ambition, and the best way to live a life. The film’s deftness with these topics (and its ability to do so in a way that is often funny) and the environment that surrounds these characters are excellent, but McDonagh’s writing was not always so clear. At a recent awards show, he recalled one of Inisherin’s stars giving him a less-than-stellar review of the original script.

Searchlight’S The Banshees of Inisherin was a notable reunion between writer-director Martin McDonagh and stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who first teamed up on McDonagh’s feature debut, 2008’s In Bruges. But McDonagh’s latest film — which has netted him Oscar nominations for best director, original screenplay and picture — also reteamed him with Graham Broadbent, who has produced each of McDonagh’s features and earned his second Oscar nomination for best picture, after Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri scored a nom in 2018. Speaking with THR, Broadbent looks back on when he first read the script for McDonagh’s darkly comic fable and claims that when the Oscar-winning writer-director calls about a new project, Broadbent knows it will be extraordinary.

If there’s going to be a surprise win in Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, look no further than “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Aside from its Golden Globe win for Best Film Musical/Comedy, “Banshees” failed to take the top prize with any major group this season, but that didn’t stop it from mounting upsets in other key categories. If the dark horse spirit that earned it major Globe and BAFTA wins continues into Oscar night, director/writer/producer Martin McDonagh could find himself with his first Oscar statuette in a feature film category.
McDonagh is already an Oscar winner for his 2006 live-action short “Six Shooter,” but he came up short for his work on the feature films “In Bruges” in 2009 and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018. "The Banshees of Inisherin" is a film that invites all manner of interpretations. It's a film about a lot of things: mortality, mental health, communication, legacy, and so much more. Underneath all those layers though, and all that existentialism, is one very brutal, tangible break-up.
The concept of civil war is one that looms over Colm (Brendan Gleeson) and Pádriac (Colin Farrell). For one, there's a literal war raging in Ireland, very close to the fictional island of Inisherin, that Pádriac and other characters comment on throughout. But there's also a subliminal battle taking place between the film's two leads. Colm's choice to sever his lifelong friendship with Pádriac feels like a blindsiding ambush. Pádriac's desperate attempts to mend things and reverse Colm's decision play out like advances and retreats across a battlefield. There's Colm's decision to cut off his fingers one by one when Pádriac refuses to accept this...

A version of this story about Martin McDonagh and “The Banshees of Inisherin” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Seventeen years after winning an Oscar with “Six Shooter,” an uproarious and touching short film starring Brendan Gleeson, and 14 years after making his feature directing debut with “In Bruges,” British-Irish playwright turned moviemaker Martin McDonagh now has his most successful movie for awards. “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a black comedy that reunites the “In Bruges” team of Gleeson and Colin Farrell, won four awards from BAFTA at the British Academy Film Awards, as well as taking the musical or comedy Golden Globe over Academy Award frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” It also received nine Oscar nominations, two more than McDonagh’s previous high of seven for 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

All five best-actor contenders this year are first-time Oscar nominees. Two are newbies to the film industry, so that’s not surprising. But among the veterans, Colin Farrell is long overdue, after a 25-year career marked by breadth, daring and risk-taking.
In Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Farrell meets all the criteria for an Oscar win: There’s not a false note in the performance, it’s very different from what you’ve seen him do, and you can’t imagine anyone else playing the part.
In person, Farrell is 180 degrees from Padraic.
In a long conversation, he didn’t dwell on the movie, yet all roads led to Inisherin: Farrell spoke of a sense of community, of family, of friendship and the power of art — all topics addressed in the film.
About growing up, Farrell says, “I come from working-class stock. My parents weren’t into films. Now,...

The term “passion project” is thrown around a lot in Hollywood; usually as a reference to a personal story that means a ton to its writer, director or star.
But what kind of pressure does that put on the rest of the cast and crew?
This Oscar season, there are a lot of so-called passion projects that have received accolades. Among them: “The Fabelmans,” a family story that was inspired by director and co-writer Steven Spielberg’s own parents; “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a script that writer-director Martin McDonagh spent years perfecting set in an era in Irish history that few outsiders might know about; and the Marvel movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” for which director and co-writer Ryan Coogler had to follow the success of the film’s predecessor, 2018’s “Black Panther” while doing justice to its late star, Chadwick Boseman.

Jim Sheridan sent a playful response to Martin McDonagh after The Banshees of Inisherin broke his Oscar record.
For years, the renowned Irish director’s 1993 movie In the Name of the Father held the record as the Irish film to have landed the most Academy Award nominations.
Later, in 2022, Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast would go on to tie Sheridan’s record with seven nods.
However, this year, McDonagh’s dark comedy – starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two former best friends whose falling out has sinister consequences – has shattered Sheridan’s record with nine total Oscar noms, including Best Picture.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Dublin International Film Festival, Sheridan acknowledged the defeat, revealing that he personally messaged McDonagh.
“I emailed Martin, saying he was a bastard for breaking the record,” Sheridan recalled.

Hollywood directors — specifically Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and James Cameron — have a long tradition of taking out full-page adverts congratulating each other when one of their films beats the other’s to take the box office crown.
In Ireland, things are done a little differently, or at least they are for Jim Sheridan.
For the last 34 years, the renowned director has held the record for being behind the Irish film with the most Oscar nominations, first with 1989’s My Left Foot, with five, and then 1993’s In the Name of the Father with seven (which was, technically, matched by Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast in 2022). The Banshees of Inisherin is a brilliant movie about a friendship pushed to the brink. Emotional discomfort is the engine for the film’s plot, but thankfully none of that toxicity is present in the relationship between the two leads Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
The actors have been collaborators in the past, but their bond is much more significant than their careers. In a recent interview, Farrell and Gleeson recalled the endearing moment they became friends.
‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is one of 2022’s best movies
The Banshees of Inisherin takes place on a fictional island off the western coast against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War in 1923. There’s not a lot to do in Inisherin, but the two friends Colm (Gleeson) and Pádraic (Farrell) maintain a daily routine of meeting at the local pub to check in on each other. But one day, Colm stops showing...
The actors have been collaborators in the past, but their bond is much more significant than their careers. In a recent interview, Farrell and Gleeson recalled the endearing moment they became friends.

Wrapping up an impressive list of honorees, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival aimed its tribute spotlight on the annual outstanding directors of the year program on Friday night at the Arlington Theater. A late-breaking cancellation by The Daniels, behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, pared down the onstage talent, but the leaner context placed more intensive focus on two directorial sensations from the 2022 film harvest, Todd Field (Tár) and Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin).
There was much to talk about over the course of the 90-minute session onstage. Both directors are in key pivot points in their careers, and both have been graced by triple-threat Oscar nods, for best picture, best director and best screenplay categories. On the Oscar stats front, the evening’s moderator, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, pointed out that each director had films leading actors to Oscar nominations — Field with six such assists and McDonagh with seven.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” is a bitingly funny, gut-punching empathetic black comedy by Oscar winner Martin McDonagh. The film, set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, chronicles the darkening escalation of a falling out between two longtime friends. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a rapturous reception, and merited a 15-minute standing ovation. After it’s buzzy fall festival run, “Banshees” became an awards juggernaut, winning three Golden Globes and reaping nine Oscar nominations.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” heads into Sunday’s BAFTA Awards with 10 nominations, tied for second with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and four behind the German import “All Quiet on the Western Front.” It is the only one of the three up for both Best Picture and Best British Film.

In “The Banshees of Inisherin,” jaded folk musician Colm (Gleeson) abruptly ends his life-long friendship with his drinking buddy Pádraic (Colin Farrell) on the fictional island of Inisherin, a small remote community off the coast of Ireland during the Irish Civil War. Pádraic’s caring and forthright sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled local simpleton Dominic (Barry Keoghan) attempt to repair the damaged relationship by helping to defuse the escalating stand-off between the men, but their collective efforts prove fruitless as Colm’s resolve intensifies,...

Martin McDonagh is a triple Oscar nominee for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” but no matter what happens next month, he will go home an Oscar winner. Because he already is one. The playwright won Best Live Action Short Film for “Six Shooter” 17 years ago.
A black comedy, like nearly all of his work, “Six Shooter” was McDonagh’s film debut as a writer and director. It starred Brendan Gleeson, a Best Supporting Actor nominee for “Banshees,” as a widower who encounters a possibly psychotic young man, played by Irish actor Rúaidhrí Conroy, on a train ride home after his wife’s death. Conroy, who won a Theatre World Award in 1998 for his turn in McDonagh’s play “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” was unfortunately detained and barred from entering the United States to attend the Oscars due to visa issues. The U.S. Embassy later apologized for Conroy’s detention. In his acceptance speech,...

“The Banshees of Inisherin” scored 10 BAFTA nominations, tied with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” for second most behind “All Quiet on the Western Front’s” 14. Two of those bids are for Best Picture and Best British Film, but can Martin McDonagh‘s tragicomedy claim both? Since Best British Film was reintroduced 30 years ago, only three movies have managed to go 2 for 2.
“The King’s Speech” (2010) first accomplished it as part of its seven-trophy sweep. The second one was McDonagh’s previous film, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017), which collected a leading five statuettes. And the most recent was “1917” (2019), which also dominated with seven wins. Recent contenders that won Best British Film but not Best Picture are “The Favourite” (2018), “Promising Young Woman” (2020) and “Belfast” (2021).
And if you go by the odds, “Banshees” is poised to join the latter group. Best British Film is expected to be a blowout for the Ireland-set...
