Released in 1999, The Mummy was a box office hit with $409 million worldwide. Two sequels followed, as did a spin-off - 2002's The Scorpion King - which put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the map as an actor.
Stephen Sommers directed the first two movies, passing the baton to Rob Cohen for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Then, in 2017, The Mummy franchise was rebooted as part of Universal's short-lived "Dark Universe."
Tom Cruise took centre stage in what proved to be a rare critical and commercial flop for the A-Lister, and Sommers recently shared his thoughts on the movie while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com).
"No," he responded when asked if the studio reached out to him. "Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director [Alex Kurtzman] of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I...

Whenever we talk about The Mummy franchise, the first character that comes to our mind is Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell, set in the 1920s Egypt, the film revolves around the adventurer and a librarian who unknowingly releases Imhotep, a centuries-old mummy. The group takes responsibility as they prevent the rise of the evil pharaoh, and stop him from destroying the world.

The 1999 film was a massive hit as it received two more sequels, making it one of the best trilogies out there. However, in 2017, fans were disappointed when they learned that instead of getting a 4th film featuring the original cast, the $1.4 billion franchise would get a reboot. Needless to say, the film was not liked by the fans of the original series. But now, the wait for The Mummy 4 featuring Fraser comes to an end as the film’s director gives an update.

1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.

Tom Cruise is known for his action-hero persona in Hollywood. The actor has played many roles which has allowed him to flex his acting muscles as well as enabled him to perform death-defying stunts. He has headlined major franchises such as Mission: Impossible, and Top Gun, and has featured in one-off action blockbusters such as Knight and Day.
Cruise was also part of the disastrous The Mummy reboot in 2017, which was a box office failure and officially shut down the Dark Universe before it even began. However, before he came on board the ill-fated franchise, he was rumored to be in the running for the original films starring Brendan Fraser along with Brad Pitt as well. Director Stephen Sommer, however, debunked the rumors.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy is celebrating its 25th birthday, with the first part being released in 1999. Since then, the film has become part of a series, with the release of The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Three movies were not enough for some fans, however, as many have been begging for more additions to the story, even though the last part was released more than ten years ago.

Universal Pictures’ The Mummy franchise was a fan favorite when it starred Brendan Fraser as the leading man Rick O’Connell. The first two films in the trilogy were directed by Stephen Sommers, also starred Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, and were box office successes. However, the reboot starring Tom Cruise was a gigantic failure critically and commercially.
While Cruise’s film ended what Universal planned as a series of monster films with a shared universe, a recent fan-made trailer seemed to have followed it up with a new cast. The new trailer is titled The Mummy: Resurrection and sees Keanu Reeves take over the franchise to battle a new evil spirit buried in an Egyptian tomb.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching countless horror movies and episodes of "Scooby-Doo," it's that you don't mess with mummies. It's a superstition that's held so strong over the years that even when visiting museums, I tend to respectfully steer clear of the ancient Egypt exhibits. Myths about the latent powers of mummified royals have been around for ages, and many of them have been unfortunately influenced by stereotype-heavy depictions of Egypt and surrounding African and Middle Eastern cultures. Regardless of how much the world now knows about ancient Egyptian burial rituals, when most American moviegoers picture a mummy in their mind's eye these days, they're as likely to think about a Universal Pictures movie monster as they are the real thing.

'Meg 2: The Trench' director Ben Wheatley wants to turn the series into a full blown franchise. The filmmaker is at the helm of the killer shark sequel - which sees Jason Statham reprise his role as rescue diver Jonas Taylor - and while he doesn't want to get carried away, he thinks there is "a lot more to explore" in another follow up.He told Total Film magazine: "You don't want to talk about it until 'Meg 2' is out, but I hope [to see a third installment]."There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting."He praised the first movie for having a diverse cast without putting too much of a focus on their differences. He added: "What's so smart about the first film is that it's not 'Rush Hour'. It's not East-meets-West, 'Oh, we're all confused about each other'.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” began its domestic box office journey with $7.2 million in Thursday previews. That is almost on par with the $7.5 million earned by “Fast X” but well below “Rise of the Beasts” ($8.8 million), “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($8.9 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($17 million). Fresh off of an Oscar nomination for his performance in “The Whale,” Brendan Fraser is opening up about the “self-loathing” that led him to perform his own stunts early into his acting career — moments he says had an element of “self-sacrifice.”
As Fraser acted in action flicks like “The Mummy” and “George of the Jungle” at the start of his career, his discomfort with fame led him to perform his own stunts as a way to ensure “those physical performances, whether fighting, dancing or comedy, had an element of self-sacrifice.”
“Absolutely there was self-loathing,” Fraser said in a recent interview with The Telegraph. “I think on some level I felt I deserved [a beating], and wanted to be the one who got in the first punch.”

The Mummy (1999) may have been the first film about mummies many of us saw, but in actuality, it was a remake of the original 1932 The Mummy. The audience reception and box office success led to two sequels, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). 18 years after the release of this movie, a reboot and new franchise saw the release of The Mummy (2017) with Tom Cruise as its lead actor. As a recap of 1999 The Mummy, here is the movie’s cast. Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) Brendan Fraser was the face

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Brendan Fraser has explained why he thinks Tom Cruise’s 2017 The Mummy reboot flopped.
The 53-year-old actor, who played the role of Rick O’Connell in the original film The Mummy and its two sequels, said that Cruise’s reboot of the film “was too much of a straight-ahead horror”.
In his cover story with Variety, Fraser said that “it is hard to make that movie”.
“The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun,” he said of Cruise’s critically derided film. “That was what was lacking in that incarnation.
“It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
He added: “I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.”

Brendan Fraser wants his “Mummy”.
Fraser starred in the original “Mummy” movie franchise that released between 1999 and 2008. The franchise was rebooted in 2017 with Tom Cruise in the starring role, but Fraser wasn’t feeling the direction the remake took.
“It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie,” Fraser recently told Variety. “The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.

Universal Pictures' infamous Dark Universe was not an inherently bad idea. The studio had enjoyed great success crossing over its classic monster movie series going back to the 1940s, at one point even pairing them with comedy duo Abbott and Costello for a run of films. Then, director Stephen Sommers gave "The Mummy" a fresh coat of paint with his 1999 remake, a delightfully cheeky mix of "Indiana Jones"-style action/adventure and supernatural horror that would spawn two sequels and a series of spinoff films about The Scorpion King (a role originated by Dwayne Johnson in 2001's "The Mummy Returns").
Since then, however, Universal has struggled to effectively re-imagine most of its other monsters for the 21st century. Many of its attempts to do so have seen the studio trying to repurpose these characters as superheroes, starting with Sommers' 2004 movie "Van Helsing" and continuing on to 2014's "Dracula Untold," a...

Before Tom Cruise was cast in a similar role as part of Universal’s failed “Dark Universe,” it was of course Brendan Fraser who was the lead of The Mummy franchise, starring as the heroic Rick O’Connell in The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor between 1999 and 2008. Fraser led the films to massive box office success, a level of success that the Tom Cruise-led reboot just wasn’t quite able to achieve more recently.
Now that the “Dark Universe” is no more, where does The Mummy go from here? And would Brendan Fraser be interested in coming back to play Rick O’Connell one more time?
With Fraser’s popularity on the rise thanks to a career resurgence in recent years, that’s the question Variety asked the actor this week. His response? He’s not against the idea!

Brendan Fraser landed on the A-list thanks to his roll as the rollicking adventurer Rick O’Connell in “The Mummy” and its two sequels. And he hasn’t returned to the land of the undead since 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” but Fraser says he’s open to revisiting the franchise that made him a megastar.
“I don’t know how it would work,” he admits. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”
Fraser shared his thoughts on the film series as part of a Variety cover story on the making of “The Whale,” a drama about an obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. That film has landed him in the thick of the Oscar race.

After many years of thanklessly being a badass, Michelle Yeoh is finally getting the recognition that she deserves as a bonafide movie star. American audiences likely first saw her in "Tomorrow Never Dies," but they really started to take notice thanks to 2000's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Since then, she has been working consistently in things like "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," "Marco Polo," and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny."
However, after appearing in "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Star Trek: Discovery" in the late 2010s, a whole new generation learned of Yeoh's badassery. This was especially the case when those projects were followed by "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once." Now, she is incredibly in demand all over town. Her upcoming schedule already includes high-profile projects such as "The Witcher: Blood Origin" for Netflix, the adaptation of the...

Born in Frosinone, Italy in 1945, Raponi got his start working as apprentice for effects creator Carlo Rambaldi, who owned a workshop directly across the street from Raponi’s family bookstore. Wu Jing, the highest-grossing male actor of all time in China, will join British action star Jason Statham in Warner Bros.’s “Meg 2: The Trench,” sources close to the production have confirmed to Variety.
The giant shark actioner, however, will be without Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”). The Chinese actor, who played a female oceanographer, embodying both brains and beauty in Jon Turteltaub’s testosterone-fueled 2018 “The Meg,” is not returning to the franchise at this point.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

In 1999, Stephen Sommers re-introduced audiences into the world of The Mummy. A remake of the 1932 classic, the updated version saw Rick O’Connell stumble upon an ancient tomb that set loose a 3,000-year-old Mummy. Filled with vengeance and rage, the reincarnated Egyptian priest wreaks havoc on a world that wanted him dead. The Brendan Fraser vehicle was a roaring success in the mainstream, garnering $416.4 million worldwide. The surprise blockbuster had just the right amount of action, suspense, and thrills that excited audiences. A sequel, The Mummy Returns, had more of a mixed reaction from critics this time around;

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween lineup might seem like a whole bunch of Hocus Pocus, but there’s actually quite a bit of variety this year.
In fact, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy is scheduled to air just 14 times in 2020. That might sound like a lot… until you discover that the basic cabler aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019.

What better way is there to spend this upcoming Mother’s Day than by binging all The Mummy movies? And by all, I mean the “original” ones starring Brendan Fraser. If you like the sounds of this, you’re in luck, as Syfy is screening all three Mummy films – 1999’s The Mummy, 2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – as well as the Dwayne Johnson-starring spinoff The Scorpion King (2002).
Obviously, these aren’t the original Mummy movies, as the brand goes back to the 1930s, but Universal’s relaunched saga – which gave things more of an action/adventure bent – remains hugely popular and is the definitive version of the franchise for this generation. Sorry, 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise. Actually, I’m not sorry. You really sucked.
Fraser stars in all three of these pics as adventurer Rick O’Connell, with Rachel Weisz joining him as Evelyn “Evie” Carnahan,...
