One of the most important elements of delivering a memorable movie monster is the reveal. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.
When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.
The Setup
Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

For the first time since the show became exclusive to Peacock, The Office has made the weekly streaming rankings.
The long-running comedy series racked up 602 million minutes of viewing time for the week of Jan. 22-28, good enough for ninth place among library series. It’s the first appearance for The Office — which was a regular entrant in the early days of the Nielsen rankings — since it left Netflix for Peacock at the beginning of 2021.
At the top of the rankings for the week is Griselda, Netflix’s drama about the infamous drug queenpin starring Sofia Vergara. The series had 1.59 billion minutes of watch time over its first four days of release (it premiered Jan. 25). Reacher (741 million minutes) hung on in second place among original series a week after its second season finale on Prime Video, beating out Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (676 million).

Actor Bill Skarsgård is known for his roles in blockbuster films such as the It franchise and was recently seen in last year’s John Wick: Chapter 4. The Swedish actor is part of the Skarsgård family, with his father Stellan Skarsgård, and brothers Alexander, Gustaf, and Valter Skarsgård also being actors.
In October 2023, Bill Skarsgård was reportedly arrested in Sweden after he was found possessing marijuana. The Castle Rock star was reportedly caught at Stockholm’s international airport and arrested. The actor was reportedly sentenced to a fine earlier this week, with no arrest or probation.

The week of Jan. 15-21 was a big one for streaming.
Seven titles — three original series, three acquired shows and one movie — each drew more than 1 billion minutes of viewing for the week, the most that have ever hit that mark in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming charts. The previous high was six, which has happened four times (including two weeks earlier).
Kids’ favorite Bluey was the overall No. 1, with just over 1.5 billion minutes on Disney+. Reacher (1.23 billion) reclaimed the top spot among original shows from the prior week‘s leader, Fool Me Once, which fell by more than 50 percent to 1.06 billion minutes of watch time. Netflix’s heist movie Lift grew by 19 percent week-to-week, scoring 1.04 billion minutes.
Young Sheldon (1.16 billion minutes), Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (1.12 billion) and Grey’s Anatomy (1.09 billion) also hit the billion-minute mark.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith definitely didn’t surpass expectations, it mostly left us with question marks for expressions because of how lackluster the show really was. I suppose you could say there are some good parts; you’ve got beautiful sets and some fun fashion choices, but most importantly, a bunch of cameos that are meant to enhance the show considering how dull it is otherwise. Not to say that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are incapable of holding our attention, but it’s probably a mix of the writing and the pacing of this show that had me completely bored by the end of it. And, no, even these incredible special appearances did not pique my interest in any way. However, they do add a little bit of fun, even if briefly, to the mostly tedious show. Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows spies in this new spyverse, where there is...

It's a fine time to be Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie. The former is coming off starring in Brandon Cronenberg's well-received sci-fi horror movie "Infinity Pool" and reprised his role as the detestable slimeball Lukas Matsson in the final season of "Succession" to great effect. Meanwhile, Robbie anchored last year's "Barbie" -- which is now a Best Picture Oscar nominee in addition to being the top-grossing film of 2023 -- and produced Emerald Fennell's internet-breaking "Saltburn" after nearly stealing Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" with her moving single-scene appearance. Someone should really cast those two in a movie together!
Well, what, dear reader, if I was to tell you that somebody already did?
While Robbie may have been unduly snubbed for her performance in "Barbie," she can take solace in knowing she's currently topping the charts on Netflix thanks to her and Skarsgård's 2016 vehicle "The Legend of Tarzan." I'm...

The importance of revenue earned by studios from PVOD rentals reasserts itself with news that, as of Tuesday, all but two of the wide films released from either December 22 or December 25 will have home availability. That’s one month or less after their theatrical releases.
Top holiday grosser “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which opened a week earlier, sleeper rom-com hit “Anyone but You” (Sony), and “The Iron Claw” remain theater-exclusive. Otherwise, the rush for home gold has taken over.
Three of these titles — “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (WB), “Migration” (Universal), and “Ferrari” (Neon) debut on Tuesday. They will join “The Color Purple” (WB) and “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM), both of which came out last week, 22 days after release.
The results for the week actually showed that four earlier films scored better overall during the week. “Purple” did best at Vudu (#4), but only #8 at Apple TV and #10 at Google Play.

Following the conclusion of the Dceu with the release of ‘Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom,’ James Gunn has been diligently preparing for the production of ‘Superman: Legacy,’ an upcoming Superman movie that both Gunn and Safran view as the true starting point of the Dcu, despite ‘Creature Commandos’ being released earlier.
Known for his active presence on social media, Gunn frequently engages with fans, addressing questions, dispelling rumors, and offering valuable insights into the anticipated final product. Fans are particularly eager about the cast members, with Gunn stating that over 90% of the cast is already confirmed. Another aspect generating excitement is the selection of technical personnel poised to elevate ‘Superman: Legacy’ into the cinematic masterpiece envisioned by Gunn.
Responding to inquiries on Threads about potential cinematographers for the project, Gunn enthusiastically revealed that Henry Braham, a cinematographer he has previously collaborated with, is set to take on the role.

Ever since the Dceu concluded with the reBit lease of ‘Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom’ Gunn has been working tirelessly to start production on ‘Superman: Legacy’ an upcoming Superman movie that both Gunn and Safran consider the true beginning of the Dcu despite ‘Creature Commandos’ being released first.
Gunn is quite active on social media, and more often than not, he answers fan questions and debunks rumors, as well as provides useful insights regarding what the finished product might be like. The aspect of the movie that fans are most excited about are certainly the cast members (and Gunn claims that he has more than 90% of the cast locked in) and the technical personnel set to transform ‘Superman: Legacy’ into a prime movie Gunn imagines it to be.

David Yates, perhaps best known for directing four “Harry Potter” movies (and three “Fantastic Beasts” spin-off films) is back with a much more down-to-earth project. “Pain Hustlers,” based on a 2018 New York Times Magazine article by Evan Hughes that was expanded into a book last year, traces the lives of a pair of pharmaceutical reps (played by Emily Blunt and Chris Evans) who play a key role in the opioid epidemic that has swallowed the country. As it turns out the American healthcare system was just as otherworldly to Yates as anything J.K. Rowling could have dreamed up.
Yates’ colleague Lewis Taylor sent him the original article and Yates was blown away. “I read the article and what immediately attracted me was it portrayed a healthcare system and an industry that was so far removed from anything I knew in the UK. Early in his career, comedian Kumail Nanjiani did a bit about a new drug called “cheese,” which, if you break down the ingredients, turns out to be Tylenol Pm mixed with heroin. “So really, it’s heroin,” he joked. “Heroin’s doing the heavy lifting.”
That line was going through my mind as I watched “Pain Hustlers,” a garish and, yes, mostly painful Big Pharma satire from director David Yates, who (“The Legend of Tarzan” aside) spent the last 15 years making increasingly convoluted Harry Potter movies. “Pain Hustlers” is the starry, mostly-true story of a company called Insys, a key player in America’s ongoing opioid crisis. In 2012, Insys launched a fast-acting spray called Subsys whose active ingredient was fentanyl. Guess what happened. People got hooked. People died. Insys got rich.

The latest “like Hollywood used to make” Netflix original, “Pain Hustlers,” just got a brief announcement teaser.
The 62-second trailer, which you can watch above, is mostly a montage of high-intensity incidents and reactions and offers up Emily Blunt as a pharmaceutical rep allegedly getting into the painkiller game “for the right reasons.” Her boss or co-worker, Chris Evans, has no such qualms of conscience. When asked “Is this even legal?” Evans replies “Like 67 in a 65.”
As the trailer states with onscreen text, the film may cause “increased energy, elevated mood, ecstasy, paranoia, aggression [and] greed.” The picture, opening in theaters on Oct. 20 one week prior to its Oct. 27 Netflix debut, comes courtesy of director David Yates. It’s just the second film he’s directed outside of the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling since helming the fifth Harry Potter film in 2007.

The trailer for Pain Hustlers, a new film starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans, shows the ecstasy and insanity of pharmaceutical pill peddlers as a conspiracy mounts. There are exciting scenes of sales charts, corporate confetti, cash, and pills, as well as lots of screaming and chicanery. The picture, for which the MPAA promises strong language, sexual content, and drug use, will stream on Netflix on Oct. 27.
Blunt plays Liza Drake, a newly unemployed mom who meets pharmadude Pete Brenner (Evans), who welcomes her into his world … enticing her into a life of crime.

Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.
But one man is overwhelmingly leading the pack in terms of famous male offspring these days. A man who could conceivably consider the Kardashians his Warios. And that’s Stellan Skarsgård.

Samuel L. Jackson has starred in several hit blockbusters, making his films some of the highest grossing projects seen in cinema. Only a few, like Harrison Ford, have managed to rival or surpass Jackson’s combined box-office intake.
But Jackson felt all he needed was to appear in one more Indiana Jones movie to secure his rank.

Not many actors have starred in as many blockbusters with their names on them as Jackson has. Some of his most well-known franchises, like Star Wars and Marvel’s The Avengers, have grossed billions of dollars in box-office revenue.
Megastar Harrison Ford, however, once managed to beat Jackson as far as highest-grossing films went. Some of Ford’s most successful projects included hits in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

2023 is a good year to be Margot Robbie. For one, the Aussie actor is starring in what may be the biggest hit of her career: “Barbie.” Greta Gerwig’s irreverent take on the iconic Mattel doll line is lighting the box office on fire — with the potential to cross the $1 billion line worldwide. But this year also marks another milestone for Robbie. In December, she’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the Martin Scorsese movie that made her a star.
Robbie didn’t exactly become famous overnight, though it felt like that for some American audiences in 2013. The then 22 year old was already well known in her native Australia for her regular part in iconic soap opera “Neighbours,” which she booked in 2008 when she was just 18. But for those outside Australia, audiences whose only (unlikely) exposure to Robbie was the failed ABC “Mad Men” coattail chaser “Pan Am,...

Robbie featured alongside True Blood alum Alexander Skarsgard for the 2016 live-action Legend of Tarzan film. Skarsgard played the titular character Tarzan whereas Robbie played his love interest Jane. But initially, she wasn’t too thrilled with the role she was offered.
“My immediate reaction was that I had no interest in playing a damsel in distress,” Robbie once said according to The Free Library. “But my team said, ‘No, read it. It’s a different take.’ So I read the script and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this will be amazing!’ I loved the story and its sense of adventure.

Amidst all the hullabaloo about Showtime merging with Paramount+ and the continuing revival of older shows that nobody asked to be revived, you would be forgiven for missing that the Epix streaming platform formally rebranded as MGM+ on January 15, 2023. The Legend of Tarzan is a relatively new installment to the ever-growing number of movies based on the character Tarzan. It was released in the year 2016. Fortunately, the movie did not flop, and at its box office, it received a revenue of nearly twice its allotted budget. The film wasn’t all that good, though, as there were mixed reviews about the movie from different rating sites. Tarzan was not a new character in the world of movies. He first appeared in the story Tarzan of the Apes in 1912. This makes Tarzan predate the first world war. For starters,

It may not be particularly fair to say that this is a bit of a duff weekend, because there are indeed new wide and moderate releases. It’s just that very few of them are screening in advance for critics and therefore might be seen as less than. Can any of them topple Week 7 of “Avatar: The Way of Water”?
The one possibility is “Infinity Pool,” Brandon Cronenberg’s follow-up to his 2020 thriller, “Possessor,” which was stymied by the shutdown of movie theaters due to Covid. This one is equally enigmatic, though it has more of a name cast, including Alexander Skarsgård (“Big Little Lies”) and Mia Goth. Skarsgård plays a writer on a luxury vacation with his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman from “Dopesick”) who becomes involved in a fatal accident that throws him into the locale’s world of horror and violence.

Sony Pictures has acquired film rights to Tarzan in a deal with the estate of original book author Edgar Rice Burroughs, Deadline has confirmed.
Plans are in the earliest of stages we hear, with no writer, director or producer attached to what would be a full reinvention of the popular character first created by Burroughs in 1912; the author continued to write Tarzan books into the 1940s.

Screen adaptations go back almost as far as Hollywood itself, with the first, Tarzan of the Apes, appearing in 1918. Since then, the franchise has seen long runs on the big and small screen with stars such as Olympian Jonny Weissmuller and Ron Ely, as...
