Producer and managing director of Scott Free has died.
Film producer Julie Payne, a long-time collaborator of Ridley Scott, has died aged 64 following a short battle with cancer.
Payne managed the London operations of Scott’s Scott Free Films for more than 15 years, producing and executive producing projects for the company including Richard Loncraine’s The Gathering Storm and follow-up Into The Storm - winning two Golden Globes and two Emmys.
Payne also executive produced Scott’s own France-set comedy A Good Year, and produced Jordan Scott’s debut feature film Cracks.
Payne’s collaboration with Scott dates back to the late-80s, when she worked across some of Scott’s most notable movies in various roles starting with Thelma & Louise in 1991 through to G.I. Jane and Gladiator.

It seems every year I have this debate with myself whether or not to do a "worst of" list. Aren't the worst films of any year best forgotten, ignored, never to be mentioned againc Well, yes and no. Let's definitely forget them, but not forget the lessons they've taught us, lessons in what not to do, lessons of which 2014 was full of. Now before you go digging into this list, clicking the reviews and wondering how something that received a "D+" review could make the list over something that received a "D-", just understand grading movies isn't a science and, for me, what makes something the "worst" is very similar to what makes something the "best", it's the legacy the film holds in my mind. The films that made my "Top Ten Movies of 2014" are films I not only love, but films I hold fond memories for and would most...

Comic-Con trend pieces often skew toward the macro, focusing on how the various entertainment megacorporations use the annual San Diego event to carve out valuable real estate in the cultural calendar for the next two or three years. But a quick walk around the main floor inside of the Convention Center revealed a more immediate new development: Virtual Reality has arrived. Fresh off its purchase by Facebook and a buzzy line-around-the-block presence at E3, the Oculus Rift appeared in a few different places on the Comic-Con floor.

Thus far this year not a single horror movie has been able to gross more than $33 million. The Purge: Anarchy nearly topped that in its opening weekend. Perhaps purging is on its way to becoming an American tradition after all.
The Purge opened to $34 million a little over a year ago. The hastily produced follow-up brought in $28 million its opening weekend. That was good enough to boost the Universal/Blumhouse production to second place for the slow weekend that continued to be dominated by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Given the initial installment of The Purge was made for $3 million and this heavily John Carpenter-inspired follow-up cost only $9 million, the likelihood of this becoming an ongoing franchise seems assured. We’ll know for sure that The Purge has achieved franchise status when The Asylum produces a mockbuster entitled The Binge.

Thanks to a strong debut from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox has became the first studio to pass $1 billion at the domestic box office this year. The studio crossed the $1 billion mark on Sunday, which was the 194th day of the year. The last time it took this long for a studio to get there was in 2006, when Disney hit that level in 215 days.Fox's biggest title of the year is also currently the highest-grossing movie of the Summer: through Sunday, X-Men: Days of Future Past has brought in $229.2 million at the domestic box office. While it will likely wind up below X-Men: The Last Stand ($234.4 million), it's still a hefty haul for the 14-year-old franchise.Fox has also had a big year in animation, though none of the titles performed extraordinarily. DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2 has brought in $152.3 million,...

For those desperate to see the trailer for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," the final film in Peter Jackson's Tolkien prequel trilogy, there's both good and bad news today via the filmmaker's Facebook page.
First up, two trailers are set to be released for the film before its release in December. Jackson says the second of them, the full-length trailer, won't be released until October due to "the complex VFX work required to produce the battle shots we’re all wanting to see are simply not far enough along yet."
Fans however will get a glimpse before that though with the teaser trailer. Jackson says "Yesterday I finished work on a Teaser Trailer, and that has just been delivered to Warner Bros. So no doubt this Teaser Trailer will be making it’s way into the world sometime soon."

Out of the many franchises that have gone on for far too long, the Step Up series is close to the top for me. It’s rare to see a female-led action thriller positioned as a summer tentpole, but that’s what Universal has done with Lucy, which the studio just shifted up from its previously announced August 8th release date to July 25th.
It’s unclear why Universal decided to make the move, given that its buzzy title The Purge: Anarchy opens on July 18th. Perhaps it has something to do with how crowded the August 8th date was; Lucy would have opened alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a film aimed at the same younger demographic that Lucy is trying to grab, found footage thriller Into the Storm and Helen Mirren starrer The Hundred-Foot Journey.

Scarlett Johansson's latest movie Lucy has had its release date pushed to an earlier date.
The Luc Besson-directed action movie was originally slated to debut on August 8.
However, Universal has now announced that the film's new release date will be July 25, 2014.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, reasons for the date change were not made clear, though it might be tied to avoiding other August 8 releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Into the Storm.
However, the July 25 release date falls on the same day as premieres for movies including Brett Ratner's Hercules and the latest Step Up film.
Meanwhile Johansson, who currently stars in the record-breaking Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is reportedly in talks to star in a live-action remake of The Jungle Book.

Universal has moved “Lucy,” Luc Besson's action movie starring Scarlett Johansson, up to July 25, positioning Johansson's titular superhero against Dwayne Johnson's “Hercules” and Cameron Diaz’ “Sex Tape.” The movie had been scheduled to open Aug. 8, the same weekend as Paramount's “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” DreamWorks’ drama “The Hundred-Foot Journey” and Warner Bros.’ “Into the Storm.” See video: Scarlett Johansson Accidentally Accesses 100 Percent of Her Brain Power in First ‘Lucy’ Trailer It would have also opened a week after Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which early data suggests will be a big hit. It now gets a week of running.

It's not every day that Time magazine follows what NPR and the New York Times set in motion, but the May 19 issue of the weekly magazine does just that, and with aplomb. With The Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich now pursuing (slightly) more serious fare than his usual effects-driven blockbusters, there has been a certain deficiency of big-budget disaster thrillers at the box office lately. And unless you count the found-footage film Into the Storm, this summer won’t offer much for fans of the subgenre. The summer of 2015, however, is a different story. In June of next year, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star in an epic disaster thriller titled San Andreas, which explores what happens when a colossal, long-dreaded earthquake devastates the West Coast.
In addition to offering plenty of jaw-dropping sequences of destruction and explosive action scenes, San Andreas may also offer some moments of genuine drama, if its strong cast is any indication. Today, Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) signed on for the film, joining Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Colton Haynes, Art Parkinson, Archie Panjabi, Morgan Griffin and Todd Williams.

<< Continued from Summer Forecast: #1 - 1213. The Fault in our Stars (June 6): As usual, there's not a ton of compelling content for women this Summer. One exception to that is The Fault in Our Stars, which is a romantic drama based off the popular John Green novel. Into the Storm looks like a disaster movie that’s gonna get a lot of mileage out of hopefully placing tornadoes in various scenarios (not unlike a certain Twister). There’s even a fiery tornado in the trailer, so that’s cool I guess. I do hope this movie has more than just visual effects going for itself. […]

The first official teaser trailer for Into the Storm is essentially disaster-movie porn, but it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen an outrageous big-screen natural disaster, so all destruction and no story is really the most marketable way to go. However, marketability is only one component of a good trailer and this week’s Best Stuff selections have many more. The Best Stuff 1. The Purge: Anarchy The teaser for The Purge: Anarchy was a little underwhelming, but apparently for good reason. It turns out that first promo was only a baby step back into the 12-hour free-for-all. The first full trailer, on the other hand, goes all in and it’s all the more satisfying because the original teaser paved the way. By introducing us to just two...

We'll start with the new poster for Michael Bay's latest robot flick, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz running away from a massive spacecraft. Into the Storm wants us to be scared. It wants us to consider all of the tumultuous weather instances that have plagued us lately, and be worried that the worst is still yet to come. It wants us to cower in our local theaters and stare at the screen, hoping the devastation we see doesn.t find its way off, and into our neighborhoods. It also wants to be like Twister. New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow just released (via YouTube) that new trailer for Into the Storm, a found-footage disaster picture that revels in some of the most incredible storm-footage terror clips I think I.ve seen in a film. Remember Kevin Costner.s Pa Kent getting swallowed up by a tornado in Man of Steel? It.s nothing compared to this. I mean, there are airplanes landing On Top Of other airplanes! House of Cards star to take role of wartime leader in Captain of the Gate, focusing on Churchill's rise to power in 1940
Kevin Spacey looks set to play Winston Churchill in a new biopic of the British wartime leader, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Captain of the Gate will centre on Churchill's rise to power in the second world war, when he led his country against Hitler's regime. The screenplay is by Ben Kaplan, who has written about Us president Ronald Reagan for a History Channel film and worked on documentaries about Vietnam and the second world war.
Spacey is reportedly attached to the project, which is seeking a director. The double Oscar winner is experiencing something of a career renaissance, with Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his role as a less well-respected politician: Francis Underwood in the Netflix drama House of Cards.

Kevin Spacey has played fictional politician Frank Underwood on Netflix series "House of Cards" for two seasons, but now he's set to portray a real world leader.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Spacey will play former British prime minister Winston Churchill in a new biopic called "Captain of the Gate." The film will focus on Churchill's rise to power during World War II, and according to THR, chronicle his stand "against Parliament to defend Britain and the world from Adolf Hitler's Third Reich."
Churchill served as Britain's prime minister from 1940-1945, and again from 1951-1955. The influential world leader has frequently been the subject of movie and TV projects, including two HBO films: 2002's "The Gathering Storm," starring Albert Finney, and 2009's "Into the Storm," starring Brendan Gleeson.
"Captain of the Gate" was written by Ben Kaplan, whose previous credits include a Ronald Reagen film for the History Channel.

Apparently, even the White House wasn’t enough. Hot off his acclaimed turn as dastardly politician Frank Underwood on the second season of Netflix’s hit drama House of Cards, Kevin Spacey has signed on to play former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a biopic titled Captain of the Gate.
The biopic, which hails from Sierra/Affinity (Oculus, the upcoming Kill the Messenger), will focus on Churchill’s rise to power as he heroically took a stand against Parliament in order to protect England from Adolf Hitler’s powerful Third Reich. The script was penned by Ben Kaplan, who recently worked on the History Channel’s documentary Reagan. Kaplan also wrote episodes of historical documentary series Vietnam in HD and WWII in HD, both also for the History Channel, but Captain of the Gate will mark his feature debut.
