Tracey Ullman has been creating characters – and a string of successful shows, including Tracey Takes On… (HBO, 1996-99) and Tracey Ullman's State of the Union (Showtime, 2008-10) – for decades. But it was only recently that she's really embraced impersonating celebrities and politicians. For the second season of Tracey Ullman's Show, which originally aired on the BBC and is now available on HBO, she's back with her impressions of a rascally Dame Judi Dench (and her frenemy Dame Maggie Smith), a sexy singing Angela Merkel, and a version of Jerry Hall that will make you squirm.

Tracey Ullman has lost her true partner in sketch comedy hilarity. Allan McKeown, the Emmy winner's producer husband of 30 years, died on Tuesday at their Los Angeles home. He was 67 and had battled prostate cancer, according to reports. McKeown, who hailed from England like his wife, cocreated her Emmy-winning HBO series Tracey Takes On... and her more recent Showtime series Tracey Ullman's State of the Union, both of which featured Ullman perfectly at home playing multiple characters. After training as a hairdresser with Vidal Sassoon in London and running his own salon, McKeown broke into TV production in the late 1960s, largely making commercials in his native Britain. He and...

A while back, it was revealed that director David Cronenberg would be making his way through his slate, which would include an adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s novel As She Climbed Across The Table. However, the trail on that project had went cold for some time. But now, it’s gotten and oddly intriguing shot right into the arm.
Deadline is reporting that writer Bruce Wagner, best known for films like A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and episodes of Tracey Ullman’s State Of The Union, will be penning the film. Cronenberg and Wagner have worked together before, with the former producing the latter’s directorial debut I’m Losing You, and while Wagner does have a spotty CV, there is something oddly interesting about that fact.

Cronenberg is back in business. He's already finished with his anticipated fall drama A Dangerous Method and just finished shooting Cosmopolis, so what's next for David Cronenberg? Well, Deadline is reporting he's attached to another project, an adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel As She Climbed Across the Table that Media Rights Capital has preemptively acquired. Writer Bruce Wagner (Showtime's "State of the Union") is adapting the script that is part comedic, part thriller about a female physicist who creates a black hole and "dumps her boyfriend" to devote all her time to working on said black hole. Perfect for Cronenberg. The 1997 novel is about a love triangle that narrator Phillip Engstrand, a university professor, gets into with Alice Coombs, a particle physicist engaged in a bold attempt to "replicate the origins of the universe." The result of the experiment is "Lack", a very selective black hole that sucks some...

Tracey Ullman has signed on to cover the impending wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton for Canadian TV. The State of the Union star will appear across Bell Media's numerous channels to provide her own humorous insights on the tremendous fanfare surrounding the ceremony, CTV confirmed. After airing the wedding live from Westminster Abbey on April 29, Ullman is to join CTV news anchors Lloyd Robertson and Lisa Laflamme from London for an additional seven hours of live coverage. The comic has long poked fun at Britain's royal family, even (more)...

Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf
Director: Whit Stillman
Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.
Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. There's a curious trend in category placement at the Emmys this year. Lots of female stars who were formerly competing in the supporting slot have promoted themselves — wisely or foolishly — to lead. Lots of the moves, let's just say, aren't wise and are probably being made for ego reasons. One star, Tracey Ullman ("State of the Union"), is being forced to switch due to rule changes. Others are making the move freely: Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights"), Anna Gunn ("Breaking Bad"), Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"). Hmmm … why is only Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") moving in the opposite direction, humbly dropping from lead to supporting?
Note: There's a mistake on the HBO DVD campaign box shipped to Emmy voters. Jane Adams ("Hung") is listed in lead, but she's actually been entered in the supporting category.
I asked our resident Emmy sages Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria (AwardsHeaven...

Even though Tracey Ullman's Showtime variety program "State of the Union" doesn't compete for best comedy series, its star might nonetheless be nominated for, and win, best comedy actress at the upcoming Emmys. It's one of the quirky results of the TV academy tinkering with categories. Last year, when the Emmys squashed a category that Tracey Ullman had won twice (1990, '94) — best performance in the variety program — its contenders were pushed into either the guest or supporting races for comedy acting. Ullman was defined as a supporting comedy star. That's a laugh, of course, since she doesn't support anyone on "State of the Union," so now she's been reclassified as a contender...

Next on "Supernatural" the Winchester brothers are plagued with "99 Problems". Sam and Dean are outnumbered by demons, but are saved at the last minute by Rob and his townspeople, who are aware of the Apocalypse, and have been training to fight and kill demons.
The small town is very religious and Sam and Dean meet Pastor Gideon, who introduces them to his daughter Leah, whom he claims is a prophet. Leah tells the townspeople they must obey her orders if they want a spot in Heaven but when she starts turning the townspeople against each other in the name of the Lord, the brothers realize they must kill her.
"99 Problems" airs on April 8. Michael Shanks from "Stargate Universe" guest stars as Rob, Larry Poindexter from "State of the Union" as Pastor Gideon and Kayla Mae Maloney from "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" as Leah.

British female comedy impressionists like Catherine Tate should pay royalties to Tracey Ullman for copying her schtick. Ullman was the original and still remains one of the best, if not The best, at what she does.
As with the first two seasons of her Showtime series Tracey Ullman's State of the Union, she pretends to be, or rather becomes, different personalities across the United States over a single day with an ubiquitous announcer informing us of who she is and where in the country she is located. She even impersonates various celebrities on the way, and sometimes she is more than one of them at the same time.

Showtime is ready to uncover its plan for next year, putting "Twilight" as the starter kick of the entire line-up in the first quarter. The cable bought the TV broadcast right to the hit vampire film and will air it for the first time on January 23. The time, however, is not yet determined.
Coming two days after "Twilight" is "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" which would start its third season on January 25. Others populating the date would be "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union" which also debuts its third season, and new series "La La Land" where British comic Marc Wootton plays three different characters in real situations with unsuspecting real Los Angelenos.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Awards® The winners at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight and it is a mixed bag as not one single movie won more than one award and Kate Winslet continued on her path to her first Oscar win. Winslet took home the Actor for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader, but didn't go home double-fisting as Meryl Streep took home her second SAG award with a win for her great performance in Doubt. Heath Ledger once again won for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight and his award was accepted by his co-star Gary Oldman who gave a short but sweet speech. The other motion picture acting award went to Sean Penn for Milk as he topped Mickey Rourke who won at the Golden Globes as the plot thickens on the way to the Oscars. Like Rourke at the Globes,...

Nominations for the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning all while the Guild members are split on whether to move forward with a strike or not... There are certainly a few surprises to be mentioned such as how it looks like Revolutionary Road should start expecting little more than a Kate Winslet nomination as Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Shannon and the film itself are not mentioned. Melissa Leo swoops into the Best Actress category and Kristin Scott Thomas swoops out. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) takes the Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) nomination and Robert Downey Jr. also gets in on the action for Tropic Thunder. Will the Academy be as open to Downey's comedic role? Many are talking about Doubt coming out of these nominations, but it really should come as No surprise whatsoever since the top award is based on an ensemble acting piece and in those...
