Star of British film thrillers who specialised in the role of the classy girlfriend
In the 1950s, while watching a second feature before the "big picture" at their local cinema, regular British filmgoers would often have seen Rona Anderson, who has died aged 86. Anderson starred in 20 movies between 1950 and 1958, mostly well-crafted, low-budget thrillers. Opposite such luminaries as Robert Beatty, Jimmy Hanley, John Bentley, Paul Carpenter and Lee Patterson, Anderson was the classy girlfriend who helps the hero solve a murder, usually via a visit to the criminal underground, all within the hour allotted to the film.
According to the Scottish comedian Stanley Baxter, Anderson "had this incredible, porcelain-like face, too beautiful for film … The camera likes angularity, to see the edges, and I think Rona's face was just too perfect." Whatever the reason, Anderson made few major movies, though she appeared in many popular television series, such as The Human Jungle...

Nicolas Winding Refn follows up his Los Angeles pulp thriller Drive with an ultraviolent far eastern crime oddity
Like his mentor, the 57-year-old enfant terrible Lars von Trier, the 42-year-old Nicolas Winding Refn is equally fascinated by extreme violence and the austere, mystical Lutheranism of Carl Dreyer, the father figure of Danish cinema and still its greatest exponent. His new film as writer-director, Only God Forgives, exhibits both these elements but is set far from Denmark in a stylised, present-day Bangkok, almost entirely at night in underpopulated, garishly neon-lit streets and dark interiors, though there's one memorable, downbeat shot of the oppressive, smog-ridden city in the early morning.
The film's central character is an American expatriate played by Ryan Gosling, who made a serious impression as a getaway driver in Refn's Los Angeles-set Drive. More recently he appeared as a sad fairground performer and criminal in Derek Cianfrance's A Place Beyond the Pines,...

A new trailer has been released for the latest take on the classic story of "Romeo & Juliet."
Adapted by "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, "Romeo & Juliet" stars Douglas Booth ("From Time to Time") and Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") as the ill-fated lovers.
The trailer borrows classic Shakespeare lines, beginning, "Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo." Romeo and Juliet are shown falling in love as Juliet's cousin Tybalt (played by Ed Westwick of "Gossip Girl" fame) warns the young woman against being with a man from the Montague family, the rivals of her own family, the Capulets. Take a look at the clip above.
"Romeo & Juliet" has been adapted for the big screen many times. Notable iterations include Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, and George Cukor's 1936 adaptation starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer.

The Monsters University star has been a big screen presence for a number of years. Here's some of his most memorable moments
John Goodman first rose to prominence in sitcom Roseanne, starring as long-suffering working class everyman Dan Conner. The show began in 1988, and over the intervening years he's been a consistently engaging screen presence on the big and small screen – although he can be a fractious interviewee, as Xan Brooks found out earlier this year when interviewing him for Argo:
Fishing responses from him is like chipping at granite. He says, "No, sir" and, "I don't know"; "I suppose" and, "I wouldn't know about that." From time to time, he emits a long, breathy groan, as though invisible doctors are subjecting him to some invasive medical procedure. I don't know whether he's exhausted or sick; whether he hates interviews or this particular interviewer. On balance, with the benefit of hindsight,...

Mayfield Depot, Manchester
It's an irony, given his obsession with our surveillance culture, that if you were to cast the voice of Orwell's Big Brother, Adam Curtis would be hard to beat. The BBC documentary-maker – justly celebrated for series that include The Century of the Self, The Power of Nightmares and All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace – speaks with such paternal conviction, such stylish wisdom, that given half a day in a film archive you suspect he could have you believe pretty much anything. This Manchester international festival collaboration with Bristol-based trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack is billed as a playful showdown, a versus, in the manner of a rap contest or a prize fight; the vast derelict train depot in which this battle is being staged over 10 nights offers a suitably raw-boned backdrop for the high-decibel stand-off – earplugs are given out at the door – but it quickly becomes...

Islamabad, June 21: Much needs to be done for reviving Pakistan's film industry, said a leading Pakistani daily Friday.
"Given the challenges this country faces, the casual observer could be forgiven for thinking that cultural activity is at a low ebb. That, however, is not the case. From Karachi to Peshawar to Swat, cultural activities are drawing audiences," said an editorial in the Dawn.
"From time to time, these are of a nature that cause haunting nostalgia, a tangible desire to return to the gentler Pakistan where music, art and culture were amongst the state's priorities," it added.
The Karachi Arts Council is holding.

From time to time we like to check out some real crime-action. You know, things like greed, betrayal, murder, and stuff like that. Arthur Louis Fuller‘s latest flick Assassins Tale includes all that (and more), and that’s exactly why we’re here today – to share the official trailer and poster for the movie which stars lovely Anna Silk and (obviously) promises a lot of action. Take a look! In case you’re not so familiar with the title, let me first inform you that Fuller directed the whole thing from a script he co-wrote with Guy Garner, which revolves around a trio of assassins who stand...

Th 84-year-old director rolled into Cannes this week to discuss his latest film La Danza de la Realidad, a magic-realist memoir of his youth. He talks about his troubled childhood, his passion for psychomagic – and why ageing doesn't trouble him
Missing, believed lost, Alejandro Jodorowsky rolls into Cannes like a conquering hero. He has a room at the Croisette and a film in the directors' fortnight – a rambunctious sidebar away from the Palais. "I am like the rain, I go where I'm needed," the director explains. "If I were in the big house, with the red carpet and photographers and all the fancy women, I would be ashamed." He has always been happier way out on the fringes.
Jodorowsky turned 84 last birthday. He has white hair, bright eyes and a crocodile smile. It is now more than four decades since he thrilled the faithful as El Topo, a mysterious gunslinger in rabbinical black,...

When Wayde King married his wife, Heather, she came as part of a package deal with her brother, Brett Raymer, and her father, Irwin "The General" Raymer, and a business partnership that became Las Vegas-based Acrylic Tank Manufacturing.
Now that Atm is the focus of the reality show "Tanked," airing Fridays on Animal Planet, King and Raymer spend a lot of time together, both for television and business.
"We've been together almost 17 years, so we're like brothers," Raymer tells Zap2it while sitting at a picnic table with King at a Malibu, Calif., winery where they've just installed an aquarium built into a covered wagon.
He continues, "We know each other's pet peeves; we know each other's good and bad points."
"I irritate him more," says King.

Securing an interview with The Great Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio required un-Luhrmann-like levels of attention
The 66th Cannes film festival opens with The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann's star-spangled adaptation of the nightclub in Southsea. Luhrmann's opus has the swimming pools and fireworks. It's got a thousand extras, 40 Prada party dresses, 288,000 crystals and an exclusive VIP area containing the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. To commemorate this grand unveiling, the press is allowed behind the velvet rope to meet them.
Day one of the festival begins with an interview with Luhrmann, who is altogether delightful. It then continues towards a promised audience with the film's star, DiCaprio, out at the Hôtel du Cap on the cliffs beyond town. En route through the grounds, the people carrier gets lost in a maze of rutted, unsigned roads and effects a series of jolting six-point turns as the security...

After five seasons of high drama, "90210" ends its run on Monday (May 13) with its series finale, "We All Fall Down." We recently spoke to Matt Lanter (Liam) about what was coming and about how it felt to bring this character to an end.
Is Liam really going to run off to Australia? Because I don't know if that's going to be okay with people.
Matt Lanter: [laughs] Yeah, I don't think it would be okay with people. But I guess that would be a big spoiler if I said I did run off. Let's just put it this way: I just want Liam to be happy, whatever he does. And I think fans should be cool with that. I mean, this kid has gone through so much strife in the past five years -- like his dad, his relationships, women have taken advantage of him in every way possible. I...

After 27 years at the helm, Sir Alex Ferguson today shocked the world of sport by announcing his retirement. As the plaudits pour in for this living legend it makes United’s latest title triumph all the more poignant.
Manchester United will be presented with the league trophy for the 20th time, on 12th May, and incredibly, as we look back on Fergie’s career, it will be his 13th Premier League title triumph. In total he has won 38 trophies with United (including the Charity/Community Shield) and overseen the creation of some memorable sides.
He has seen off all challengers, shown durability and has mastered the skill of being adaptable, whilst retaining elements of an old fashioned managerial approach. The man is the embodiment of the term “living legend.” When you think of the players and managers that were around when he took over at United (Norman Whiteside, Brian Clough...

Thousands of fans gathered in Scranton over the weekend to send-off the cast and crew of The Office, just two weeks before the series finale airs on NBC Thursday, May 16. As many took part in The Office Wrap Party with the Dunder Mifflin crew, it's hard to imagine who would skip out on the opportunity—unless of course, you burnt your foot on a George Foreman grill or something. Compared with last week’s episode, Game of Thrones‘ sixth frame of season three was a bit of calm following what was a furious episode of movement. It’s fitting, then, that it begins with a rather quite scene by the fire, checking in on Samwell Tarly and his stolen wildling girl Gilly. Still her most awkward of heroes — not even fit to start a damn fire — Sam attempts to pass their time in the wilderness Beyond the Wall with a soothing song. Just as a fiery sword battle set the tone for last week’s rage, Sam’s tender moment establishes the big goal for “The Climb”: it’s about moving characters forward with smaller, calmer moments. And taking a trip into much darker territory. From here, there will be advanced talking points from this week’s episode, “The Climb.” Read on at your own peril. “I saw Jon Snow… Surrounded...

Philip French's international reputation as a film critic is unrivalled. As recently as February, after a career with the Observer that began in 1963, an American film journal rated him as Britain's "greatest living movie analyst". But at the end of August he is to file his last column as this newspaper's film critic. After an illustrious half century, French, who was honoured with an OBE in January, has decided to step down following his 80th birthday the same month.
In his first column for the Observer, he bemoaned the lack of British films offering a believable picture of criminathe underworld. He noted "the tired vignettes of sub-Runyon characters" in The Small World of Sammy Lee starring Anthony Newley.

From time to time, there are issues so divisive that they threaten to tear apart the entire Vulture staff and, if left untended, could destroy the very fabric of reality as we know it. It is incumbent on us, then, to address these issues in a manner befitting their extreme importance. Today's hot topic: Should we be excited about Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby? Kyle Buchanan and Amanda Dobbins will now work through their anxieties.Amanda: Kyle! After months (years, really) of staring across the bay at Baz Luhrmann’s very bright green light, the moment is upon us. We finally get to watch Leonardo DiCaprio throw shirts and to hear what money sounds like as interpreted by Carey Mulligan’s American accent. It is very exciting — or at least I think it is, despite the six-month delay, the poorly Photoshopped posters, and the loud, histrionic trailers. Are these warning signs,...

For my first of what will hopefully be many articles for Whatculture.com, I have decided to present 5 reasons why Nxt is an absolute must-see wrestling broadcast. Pro wrestling has been an almost constant in my life. In fact, if you perused the Schibler family photo album you would find photos of my mom and dad when I was a small child attending a local Texas wrestling show, featuring the likes of Percy Pringle III, the master of Destrucicity the Ultimate Warrior, and the Von Erichs. So from a young age, I have watched, studied, and reenacted professional wrestling matches, be it with my brother or with various other inanimate objects and dolls around the house. The Schibler household was home to many a tag team classic between The Brothers Schibler and My Buddy Doll Collective.
So when I tell you I love wrestling, you know it’s a deep love.

Los Angeles, Feb 3: Actress Jennifer Aniston reportedly still can't get over her ex-husband Brad Pitt and is seeking counseling to get rid of the obsession.
"From time to time, she even pulls out a box of mementos she's kept - love letters, her handwritten wedding vows, pictures from their romantic vacations abroad, even one of Brad's old, ratty T-shirts that she claims still has his smell on it," showbizspy.com quoted a source as saying.
Aniston, who is engaged to actor Justin Theroux, is so consumed by thoughts of Pitt that she recently enlisted friend and actress Courteney Cox to spy on him by way of their mutual friend.

Using a combination of stop motion and puppetry Jonason Pauley and Jesse Perrotta have produced a live action version of Toy Story, shot for shot. There is also a great facebook page cataloging their journey (which included a trip to Pixar who gave their blessing) as well as outtakes and lots of other good stuff. So sit back and enjoy, and if you've got kids in the house, make sure they see it as it will blow their mind!!!

The fake advert appears on directgov website offering salary of £60,000, with 'performance bonuses on completion of missions'
Ever wondered how much James Bond gets paid to whirl around the world killing enemies of the British state, in between motorbike chases and train-top fisticuffs? When Secret State hits our screens, watch out for the vicar: he's played by novelist and former MP Chris Mullin, who wrote the book it's based on, A Very British Coup. Here is his diary from his time in front of the camera
Thursday, 16 February, 2012
To Manchester where I am to have a walk-on part in a new TV version of my first novel, A Very British Coup, about the overthrow of a radical, very left-wing prime minister. Not that this new series bears much resemblance to my book. Even the title has been changed – to Secret State – and the credits say "inspired by" rather than "based on".
Director Ed Fraiman has kindly agreed that I might have a walk-on part, a la Alfred Hitchcock. I thought he might reincarnate me as a backbench MP or even a minister; instead I am to be the vicar conducting a memorial service...

It’s hard to believe how fast time has flown, as we’re just over two weeks away from the launch of Nintendo’s Wii U console and its much-anticipated first party experience, New Super Mario Bros. U. No matter how much it feels like we’re still in October, it’s actually November, and that means good things for fans of the Big N.
This morning, the video game giant released a detailed press release, which revealed some of the new modes and gameplay assets that will be featured within New Super Mario Bros. U. Its list includes a multiplayer coin collecting competition and varied challenge types, in addition to a brand new character named Nabbit, who just so happens to be an aptly-named thief whom players must stop. Those who do will be able to get some of Toad’s stolen items back, and will receive a P-Acorn as a reward,...

But they exist. Trust me. A good example would be this little movie right here: “Chonmage Purin”. A quirky family oriented comedy about a time-travelling samurai who inadvertently lands in front of a present-day Tokyo supermarket.
To his amazement and horror, the unfortunate warrior slowly begins to cope with the fact that he no longer exists in his time period. Scared out of his wits, he is befriended one day by a single-mother, Hiroko Yusa ( Rie Tomosaka ), and her little boy Tomoya ( Fuku Suzuki ). And so, Yasube Kijima ( Ryo Nishikido ), ex-officer to the Shogun, finds himself in quite a pickle: either the place where he has lived all of his...

From time to time, we like to try something a little different here at HeyUGuys, and having spent more time than I’m sure I’d like to admit on sites like Sporcle, who have an excellent variety of user-made quizzes on movies and much, much more, I thought I’d give it a shot myself and see if I could successfully design my own film-related crossword.

Being a gamer is a double edged sword. From time to time, a title comes along that absolutely changes your life (or takes over it at least) with an incredible story, and amazing new gameplay dynamic or innovation, or is otherwise badass to the point that addiction is a certainty. But how often is that, really?
More often than not, you’re forced to content yourself with sub-par games that you yourself know you’re only playing to fill the space in between those games that actually warrant your attention. Yet still, you play on, you beat sub-par game after sub-par game until finally you’re GTA comes out, your Portal 2 or your Skyrim, and so you get your fill of excellence and begin again.
It must be difficult developing and publishing video games, especially today, when it must seem like everything has been done, every idea has been had and incorporated.

A once 'alternative' newspaper, accusations over sex-trafficking, a corporate ruse … it's mildly entertaining but all deeply phony
After several years of calumny related to its business in sex-related classified advertising, the company that owns the Village Voice, as well as a collection of other papers that used to be called the alternative press, has decided to sell the papers and keep the lucrative sex ads. In truth, this is more legerdemain than actual transaction, and nothing but some corporate filings will likely change. But put that aside for the moment.
The Village Voice and other like-minded papers have always been supported in part by sex ads. In the case of the Voice, that's more than 60 years of sex ads. Indeed, the Voice's ads might fairly be said to have helped make the world safe for a remarkable variety of fetishes.

Ksl-tv, an affiliate on NBC in Utah, will not air Ryan Murphy's The New Normal this fall, labeling the sitcom - which focuses on a gay couple and its surrogate's family - as "inappropriate" material.
“From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of Ksl’s parent company, Bonneville International, told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive.”
Ksl is owned by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and chose not to air The Playboy Club last fall for similar reasons.
The New Normal star Ellen Barkin referred to the move as "blatantly homophobic" and wondered how the affiliate could justify airings of Law & Order: Svu, but not her sitcom. She added:
"[A] loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?...

Lionsgate has confirmed to EW that they have acquired the rights to the 1970 Jack Finney novel Time and Again, news first reported by Variety’s Showblitz. The time travelling adventure follows New York illustrator Simon Morley, who — by way of a military experiment — goes back in time to 1882 and falls in love with a woman named Julia. Simon must decide whether to stay in the past with the woman he loves, or return to the present where he belongs.
The novel has been bounced around Hollywood for a number of years — Robert Redford even tried to get a project off the ground in the ‘90s.

Have you ever read Jack Finney's "Time and Again?" It's a classic time travel book from 1970 about an ad exec who enters an apartment in New York's The Dakota (where John Lennon once lived, also the setting for Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby") and goes back in time to soon after the landmark building was built in 1882 (actually it was two years later), when it was surrounded by fields. Robert Redford and Paul Newman were among the many players who tried--and failed--to make it into a movie. Finney also wrote a 1996 sequel, "From Time to Time,"bpublished one year after his death, and saw his paranoid thriller "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" spawn more than one movie. Now Lionsgate production chief Erik Feig is going to give it a go with talented but disorganized filmmaker Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith") on board, reports Variety. Liman will produce with his.

Like a sweaty, snarling, Ott wrestler, Jack Finney’s illustrated 1970 novel Time And Again has beaten off all Hollywood’s champions who have tried to wrestle it to the cinematic mat and force it on screen. Now Summit / Lionsgate is hoping Doug Liman might be the man with the gumption to finally crack the adaptation.Finney’s romantic time travel tale follows Simon Morley, an illustrator living in ‘70s New York who agrees to be part of a secret government programme. He’s zapped back to 1882 where he falls in love with a beautiful woman and must decide between his life (and current girlfriend) in the present and the past. It sounds a bit like Kate & Leopold except, y'know, not dreadful.Time And Again slowly built up a huge following and Finney even wrote a sequel, From Time To Time, which arrived one year after he died in 1996.The first...

Matthew McConaughey has built a career out of playing affable charmers, from his laid-back stoner in "Dazed and Confused," to a series of lighthearted romantic comedies, right up to his current role as an endearing strip club owner in "Magic Mike." From time to time, he's veered into darker characters in underrated gems such as "Frailty" or "The Lincoln Lawyer."And he's readying for a remarkably challenging role; he recently lost 30 pounds to play an AIDS patient in the upcoming "The Dallas Buyers Club," which explains his gaunt appearance today -- his pants are slipping off his body.Still, nothing could prepare audiences for McConaughey's turn as the title character in "Killer Joe," a Dallas cop who moonlights as a stone-cold contract killer. Nas and I have something in common: We both miss the 1990s. I miss it because that was the decade when I graduated from high school and went to college. Everything felt so important back then -- especially music. Nas presumably misses it because his music was among the most important of the decade. Illmatic, released in April 1994, was a dispatch from the Queensbridge projects that immediately established Nas as one of the premier rappers of his generation. I'm sure it's because we were biased New Yorkers, but nobody I knew listened to Tupac until he died. Our "Who's No. 1?" debates all centered on Biggie and Nas.
None of which is to suggest that Nas (born Nasir Jones) hasn't enjoyed his share of success in the new millennium. He's released five successful solo albums since 2001; one went double platinum, two went platinum, and the last two hit No. 1. And he's...

But every ending also means a beginning and it's been announced tonight that Nolan and his partner (and wife) Emma Thomas will be swiftly moving on to be executive producers on cinematographer Wally Pfister's directorial debut.
The plot is being kept under wraps and the movie doesn't yet have a title, so there isn't a whole lot of information available on Pfister's project at this point.

Sometime in the not so distant past a person came up with the idea of bringing back Dallas to TV. The popular nighttime soap opera had had an extended run back in the '70s and '80s so maybe it was time for an update. This concept was not so amazing, but the fact that someone took the idea and ran with it and came up with a continuation of the Dallas story is. Now, in the summer of 2012, the Dallas story comes back to life with new energy and enthusiasm.
