British screenwriter Simon Stephenson has accused the makers of The Holdovers of plagiarism, saying its similarity to his 2013 script, Frisco, is “brazen”.
Mere hours before Alexander Payne’s comedy drama The Holdovers was garlanded with an Oscar win – Da’Vine Joy Randolph walked off with a Best Supporting Actress gong – controversy suddenly blew up thanks to a report published by Variety.
According to British novelist and screenwriter Simon Stephenson – whose credits include The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain – The Holdovers was “plagiarised line by line” from Frisco, a screenplay he wrote in 2013.
One of the scripts shortlisted for 2013’s Black List of unproduced screenplays, Frisco is about a middle-aged, grouchy pediatrician who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a 15 year-old patient. This, Stephenson has argued, is markedly similar to the premise of The Holdovers, in which a middle-aged, grouchy teacher (played by Paul Giamatti in the film) strikes up an...

Lena Dunham and her husband Luis Felber have co-created a romantic comedy series titled “Too Much” for Netflix. Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe are set to star.
“Too Much” follows Jessica (Stalter), a New York workaholic in her mid-30s who is reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behavior, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Brontë sister. But when she meets Felix (Sharpe) — who is less Hugh Grant in “Notting Hill” and more Hugh Grant’s drunken roommate — she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: Do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language?...

With a title like Freddy’s Fridays, it’s obvious this was meant to cash in on the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s. And with the length of time that film took to actually get made both of the other knockoffs, The Banana Splits Movie and Willy’s Wonderland ended up preceding it to release, so Freddy’s Fridays has the mockbuster slot all to itself.
Todd is bringing an escort named Anastasia home. She doesn’t seem overly concerned when he brings her not to his apartment but to a basement full of candles, chains, and a book with an eye in the middle of the cover. She even reads from it, which is a big mistake. Four figures appear and hack her to pieces as Todd watches.

Few actors of his generation can stake a claim to such a diverse array of productions as Benedict Cumberbatch. The Emmy-winning actor and past Oscar nominee has played everyone from Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange to Star Trek villain Khan, Julian Assange, Alan Turing (who brought him an Oscar nomination for “The Imitation Game”), and even Hamlet.
“It used to be just about challenging expectations and trying to do something unconventional to keep myself fresh, because of the amount of exposure I’ve had,” Cumberbatch told Indiewire in November 2021 about his wide-ranging resume. “I didn’t want to keep turning up as fast-talking posh English people. That used to be the main driver. But now it’s much more about the people I get to work with.”
Using that mantra as a guide is how Cumberbatch perhaps found his best role yet: the fearsome, bitter, and repressed rancher Phil Burbank...

The White Lotus star Will Sharpe will go behind the camera to serve as the director of the movie adaptation of Crying in H Mart, the bestselling memoir by Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner.

“The White Lotus” breakout star Will Sharpe is getting back behind the camera for the feature film adaptation of Michelle Zauner’s 2021 memoir “Crying in H Mart” at MGM’s Orion Pictures.
Per a synopsis from MGM, “Crying in H Mart” is a “coming-of age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. Will Sharpe, who starred opposite Aubrey Plaza on Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” will direct the film adaptation of “Crying in H Mart,” the best-selling (and heartbreaking) memoir from Michelle Zauner, better known as indie rocker Japanese Breakfast.
As announced by the studio, Sharpe will take on the coming-of-age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small-town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. Amazon finalized its acquisition of MGM for $8.5 billion last spring, and the studio has been ramping back up with its recent hire of new film chief Courtenay Valenti.

2073 is billed as a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future, which will tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future. 2073 is billed as a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future, which will tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future. The project is inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette La Jetée — about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity — which previously served as the basis for Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi pic 12 Monkeys, with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.

House of the Dragon producers have been accused of omitting the credit for an Emmy award-winning British editor who worked on the series.
The Game of Thrones spin-off, set almost 200 years before, is onto its fourth episode, which will be broadcast on Sunday (11 September).
While the series has received praise from critics, filmmaker Selina MacArthur has called out showrunners for allegedly failing to credit their work in the credits.
The London-based editor wrote on Twitter: “I spent seven months editing episodes two and three of House of the Dragon... I did leave the show early but the majority of my edit remained the same as I left it.
“How disappointing not to be credited for my hard work.”
MacArthur claimed in a follow-up reply that “a large amount of my work remained” despite the fact they “didn’t finish the job and there was a lot of work done...

The release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Ambulance” gave Hollywood a rare one-two-three at the South Korean box office over the weekend. But neither newcomer managed to earn 1 million in another deeply depressed session.
“Sonic 2” earned 843,000 over the weekend and 979,000 over its opening five days, according to data from Kobis, the theatrical tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
“Ambulance” earned 450,000 between Friday and Sunday and a total of 674,000 over its five days since release on Wednesday. That was good enough for third place.
Between the two newcomers, previous chart-topper “Morbius” took second place with a weekend score of 537,000. That was a 68 tumble from its opening weekend. After 12 days in Korean theaters “Morbius” has a cumulative total of 3.40 million.
The Korean government is expected to soon relax many of the anti-covid restrictions that it currently has in place and move to treat the disease as endemic.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including last year’s winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)

There’s no pretending on my part to have seen everything there was to see in 2021. I’ve still got a pretty long list of movies from the year that I would like to catch up on, including the other movie from director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Wheel Of Fortune And Fantasy, Hamaguchi’s was a name that was completely unknown to me before a couple of months ago, so it’s exciting to actually have another film of his on which to hang my high expectations, after being so captivated by Drive My Car. But there are others than have yet gone unseen, including end-of-year award contenders like Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, King Richard and Belfast, along with potentially fascinating (or disappointing) titles like Luca, Red Rocket, Citizen Ashe, Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar, A Choice Of Weapons: Inspired By Gordon Parks,...

From Stuart Little and Pet Sematary to new movie The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, cats can be scene-stealers. But how do you get such fickle and independent creatures to behave on camera?
Cats have been effortlessly stealing scenes from their human co-stars for decades. Who could forget Audrey Hepburn’s adorable marmalade tabby in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Or Jinx, the toilet-flushing Himalayan in Meet the Parents? Behind every famous film cat, there is a dedicated trainer patiently teaching them to obey a command, making sure they’re happy on set, and grooming them fastidiously to maintain their fluffy good looks.
The film-makers behind The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, a British period biopic about the Edwardian artist and illustrator who became famous for his surreal portraits of cats, were adamant they didn’t want to use CGI for the shoot, so animal trainer Charlotte Wilde was brought in with 40 feisty felines.

In our final "Team Experience Year in Review" post before the 10th annual Team Experience Awards and Nathaniel's own Film Bitch Awards (both in January), we wanted to pay tribute to the stars who worked overtime to keep us smiling, crying, laughing, and altogether wide-eyed in 2021. We asked contributors to cite ten choices as "Entertainer of the Year". The catch was the celebrity in question had to have had more than one project during the year. Quantity and Quality.
Names that didn't quite make the list but are nevertheless worthy of our sincere gratitude include actors Olivia Colman, Bradley Cooper, Vicky Krieps, and auteurs Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and Ridley Scott. Technically speaking both Jamie Dornan and Oscar Isaac made the following list but since we already sufficiently highlighted them yesterday in "Thirst Traps of the Year" we've ceded their spots to others.

This year’s Oscar race is in a bio rhythm, with a huge percentage of films based upon real people and events.
Merriam-Webster defines “biopic” as simply a biographical movie. That’s true, but there’s a wide range under that umbrella term, as this year’s contenders remind us.
They include films that span several years, including: “A Journal for Jordan” and “King Richard”; some cover multiple decades, such as “House of Gucci,” the Aretha Franklin pic “Respect” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
Other films, including “Being the Ricardos,” focus on a moment in time, which becomes a prism for exploring the era and the lives of various individuals.
Narrative films are not documentaries, so every pic takes liberty with the facts. Some take this to the extreme, such as “Spencer” (in which the life of Princess Diana borders on a horror film and begins with the disclaimer...

Exclusive: Colin Firth, Toby Jones Crystal Clarke and Tanya Moodie have signed on to star alongside Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward in Empire of Light, the drama from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, which marks his follow-up to 2020 Best Picture nominee 1917.
While the Searchlight Pictures title’s plot is being kept under wraps, it’s billed as a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s. Mendes penned the script in his first solo outing and will produce alongside Pippa Harris for Neal Street Productions. The film lensed by Mendes’ longtime collaborator Roger Deakins is scheduled for release next fall.

Nominations have been unveiled for the 42nd London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. Check out the full list below.
Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog leads the field with nine nominations, followed by Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter which received 6 (a Netflix one-two). Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part II, released by Picturehouse in the UK, followed with five.
This year’s contenders feature a notably healthy representation of female filmmakers, with the top three most nominated films all helmed by women directors.
More than 180 critics across print, online and broadcast media voted for this year’s noms, which were unveiled by British actors Joanna Vanderham and Gwilym Lee. The ceremony will take place on February 6, 2022, at London’s May Fair Hotel.
“Even though cinemas were closed for half of this year, our members were always watching films,” says Rich Cline, chair of the Critics’ Circle Film Section.
