Not all that great, but might be evidence of family guy going back to its roots
maxbuddalt1 October 2020
The episode itself isnt really memorable but what i did appreciate is how there were way less cutaway gags, the jokes were quick fired, and they didnt drag on like in the last few seasons. What i didnt like is how the characters were still totally unlike how they were in the early seasons, but i wouldnt expect the writers to do a sudden 180 and not explain it in that regard

Oh, good heavens!

Warning: Spoilers
After getting annoyed over Mindhunter lagging and his favorite snack not being served at church, Stewie loses his temper and lets out a swear. Everybody gets shocked, most of all Lois who never could hear him until now. As a result of the event, she becomes shut out by everyone.

Although the plot sounded weird on paper (Chris, Meg and even Peter in one episode have all interacted with Stewie before), it turned out to be a pretty solid satire of the social stigma on swearing. People always pretend that they care so much just to hold up an image, like you are immediately more of a lowlife just for letting out some steam sometimes. Teaches a good lesson about how swearing can feel good whenever you just want to voice your frustration. Oddly enough the parts where Lois got shunned are not really super funny, but they do feel true to life.

The callback to Peter falling down the stairs and swearing like a good Christian instead amused me. A clever way of referencing a wellknown gag without just doing the exact same thing again.

Stewie saying "Mommy" as his second word after having missed Lois but refusing to say it again for Instagram was a pretty funny way to conclude it. Anything with Stew acting like a real baby tends to be good.

The first act plot with Peter and his magic 8-ball also had some entertainment in it. The best joke is the ending to it where he asks if FOX has a steady future with all the streaming platforms on the uprise. It radiates "no" so strongly it explodes.

However, something that really got on my nerves this time were the meta jokes. Sure, the stageplay reveal was sort of creative, but mostly they were just distracting and seemed to get more obnoxious every time. I like Principal Shepherd usually, but he was pretty irritating here. And this is like the third time they have done the "We don't know how to end this" bit. Come on, guys.

The Caillou stuff also didn't do much for me, given how they didn't really go beyond "Caillou is bald 'cause cancer" or "Annoying narrator". The yoga instructor having diarrhea but urging everyone to stay calm wasn't very funny either.

Overall a decent premiere, even if it's fairly flawed like last season's Yacht Rocky.

Kind of bland.
LoveRupert17 May 2021
Honestly, this concept (in reference to Stewie being understood in some way) was a long time coming, and it was exciting to hear of it finally happening, but the execution just kind of felt boring to me, which is a real shame. It wasn't a BAD episode, and a few of the jokes were pretty funny, but overall it was maybe a little above average just for what the plot itself was.

Its isn't a bad episode
yoshizbt6 September 2021
Sure, it is a far cry from the earlier episodes, especially from seasons 2-4, but it does have some good laughs, for example, why stewie said his "first" word is a funny moment, at least for me. Is it amazing? No. Is it a good as some other great modern episodes? Again, no. But it is still pretty decent and FAR from the worst in the series or even season. Overall, 7/10.

Amazing first episode !
namikazedante28 September 2020
Really great episode with so many great gags ! Feels like they got into the real Family Guy groove again. Got so surprised by a lot of the jokes like that Home Alone joke with Buzz, the Caillou cartoon was just too hilarious and the magic 8-ball, the vodka in the freezer and so on. Really hope they keep this up the entire season.

Excellent episode from start to finish! The characters, references, and overarching message are amazingly conveyed throughout. A hidden gem in a show of mediocrity.

I keep on seeing this guy's reviews and now I'm suspecting who's giving FG a score with multiple accounts even before the episodes air

They're not even trying anymore
askeland891 October 2020
As a long time fan I want to like it but I just can't. Seems to me like Seth and his crew have given up on this show and the only reason it's still running is because there is money involved. I admire those of you who still find joy in this, sadly I just don't see the appeal.

I gotta say they really did a great job. The episode has heart to it and really made animation domination a lot better. Can't wait to see what else is in store for family guy this season

Stewie's First Word

Warning: Spoilers
There were a few things I laughed at here, but overall this show is just a disappointment. The story was weak, there was no climactic moment, just not what we are accustomed to.

There were some great Joe moments though.

Oh, how I needed to laugh this hard.
mynewyaa28 September 2020
The episode was dense with original snappy and sadistic satire (that any fan of the show would love), yet it all still remained coherently constructed around a main narrative that answered a longstanding question. I really needed to laugh like this.

Meh is how I feel
kaimoney6 October 2020
This episode sounds interesting by having Stewie finally saying his first word to everyone who couldn't hear him like Lois, but the execution wasn't very interesting to me. I was just kinda bored with this episode. It's not bad, but it's definitely not something I would consider watching again.

Problem with show about pop culture and references
herculeanes29 September 2020
It's hard to joke with just your material without mentioning something that wasn't created by you personally. Not surprisingly, pop culture jokes and nostalgic references seem like an easy way for writers. The scheme worked in the 90s, 00s ... But by 2010, Hollywood had run out of ideas and began releasing remakes of the classics.

Now even the unpopular movie or series is getting a second life in the form of a Frankenstein's monster. This atmosphere puts the Simpsons, Family Guy, and similar shows in a tough spot. The audience is fed up with remakes and does not want to hear anything about them. The authors of the remakes do not want criticism to further rework the already finished material. It would seem - "Well, since you can't joke about films and series, can writers joke about politics?" No, just about the You-Know-Who mentioned in this episode. And that's all. Maybe then writers can joke about current events? No ... Because they are related to politics. And all modern shows of this format suffer from this illness in one way or another. Writers repeat the jokes they have already said, choose safe topics, focus on nostalgia for the good old, because nothing good has come out for a long time.

And what is the essence? Writers can't joke about celebrities because they might get offended, can't joke about cancel culture, because it will cancel the show, can't joke about the Agenda and everyone associated with it... They cannot even joke about other channels and platforms, because they are competitors and may be offended. The question is - why do we need such a show now? When everyone is sensitive and does not want to listen to jokes, but talk about feelings. The suppression of relevant, interesting, controversial and important topics makes each new episode a missed opportunity and wasted potential.

How is this still on the air.
Dave_0528 September 2020
I thought I would give it one last try since usually the first episode of the season is one that people put more effort into, but it once again provide no laughs and is basically just a waste of time. This show jumped the shark years ago.

Pretty good. A breath of fresh air.
sofiaccail28 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I think this episode was pretty good. Of course it is worse than the classic episodes, but that is par for the course. The reason I liked this episode more is because it seems like a step in the right direction. I watched an episode from season 18 and I think this one was an improvement. For one think there is a decrease in filler, as there is way fewer cutaway gags and unrelated events (beginning filler). I also think it fleshed out Lois a little bit, which is good because I can't recall that many episodes centered on her. It wasn't that funny, but a couple jokes made me laugh. I also liked the part where Stewie said "Mommy" as his second word. At first I thought it was uncharacteristic, but after a few minutes I realized that Stewie can be interpreted as having a good relationship with her, and just being in denial. There are episodes where he actually likes her after all. I didn't really like how they tried to play it off like it was "all part of Stewie's plan" at the end, but I guess they did it because they needed to explain it to people who didn't see it. I thought it was clever though, because it doesn't debunk that idea. Over all, a sort-of good episode with a pretty good impact (hopefully).

Unwatchable
edfilmsuk23 November 2020
This is the worst episode of Family Guy I've ever seen. I didn't laugh ONCE. Absolutely nonsensical, lazy writing. Outdated and recycled gags. Loads and loads of filler. Just diabolically unfunny.

One of the much better season premieres in a long time.
checkinac28 September 2020
This season premiere was a lot better than last season's premiere. Family Guy has its ups and downs in some episodes, but overall it's still pretty entertaining in my opinion. The people who constantly complaining about the show are basically clout chasers who feed off the negativity towards the show and writers with unwarranted contempt. It's really annoying and pathetic at this point. These bottom feeders are nothing but trash. Move on already.
