Stars: James Callis, Anne Dudek, Amiah Miller, Natasha Bassett, Michael Bowen | Written by Josh Burnell | Directed by Adam Gierasch
Despite his output being less than prolific, I’ve been a huge fan of director Adam Gierasch for years – ever since I saw Autopsy and his stellar remake of Night of the Demons (one of the “good” remakes, even though the original is a stone-cold classic). House by the Lake is only his third feature since those films, though he was a part of the portmanteau Tales of Halloween in 2015. Surprisingly, unlike the rest of his oeuvre this film is the first Gierasch has directed that he hasn’t written – and it shows. House by the Lake is unlike any of his other films; feeling very much like a low-budget family drama instead of the usual balls to the wall horror Gierasch is associated with.

Random Media turns a picturesque retreat into a destination of terror in House By The Lake, the latest film from veteran genre scribe Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons, Tales of Halloween, Fractured, Autopsy), with a script by newcomer Josh Burnell.
A struggling couple, Scott and Karen, pack up their troubled young daughter and head to a picturesque lake house to reconnect and put their problems behind them. As Emma spends time with her new nanny, the little girl begins fixating on an imaginary friend she calls the Fish Man. Karen’s fear of the strange man down the beach, Emma’s fear of the water and her recurring sleepwalking continue to raise tensions in the house and drive a wedge between Scott and Karen until one night Emma disappears. When she’s found breathing underwater in the tub, Emma insists she’s been with the Fish Man. And he’s coming back for her.

ScreamFest La is now in full swing, and I could not be more ready for a week+ of horror movies from some of the best up-and-coming horror producers/directors in the world! I attended opening night on Tuesday and was treated to Epic Pictures & The October Society’s horror anthology Tales Of Halloween. The film included ten short terrifying—and sometimes hilarious—films from the likes of Adam Gierasch (Fertile Ground, Night Of The Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Axelle Carolyn (Centurion, Soulmate), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), John Skipp (Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Lucky Mckee (The Woman), Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers), Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Paul Solet (Grace), and Ryan Schifrin (Abominable).
There are quite a few horror movies reaching the silver screen this weekend, but Tales Of Halloween is the perfect film for the season.

Anthology horror films are a tricky beast. The rule of thumb is, usually only half of the segments are generally satisfying while the remainder leave a lot to be desired (save for the few successes such as Asylum, Creepshow, and Trick ‘r Treat). Epic Pictures Group recently announced that they will help produce a new horror anthology set for release next year around Halloween. The new anthology, Tales of Halloween, is based on a concept created by Soulmate director Axelle Carolyn.
Twitch reports:

Apart from Carolyn the list of directors, under the name The October Society, includes her husband Neil Marshall (The Descent), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Joe Begos (Almost Human), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II,...

Every year, crackling bonfires, a steaming witch’s brew, and the crunch of dead leaves come together for a creepy Halloween night concoction that makes one feel like anything could happen. Michael Dougherty’s 2007 anthology film Trick ’r Treat certainly embraced the magic of this night and now a group of directors collectively called The October Society have begun development on Tales of Halloween.
A film featuring ten interconnected segments from 11 directors, Tales of Halloween begins shooting this November. Horror readers fond of the splatterpunk genre may be happy to hear that John Skipp, co-author of The Light at the End, the sought after Fright Night novelization, Animals, and many more novels will co-direct one of the segments with Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy). Neil Marshall (The Descent),Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), and Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) are among the other directors.

Conceptualized by Soulmate director Axelle Carolyn, the anthology brings together eleven directors, working together as "The October Society," including her husband Neil Marshall, director of The Descent, Doomsday and pretty much everyone's favourite Game of Thrones episode "Blackwater".
In addition to Marshall and Carolyn, there’s Joe Begos (Almost Human), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy) and John [Continued ...]...

Horror movie fans have a new anthology film project in development called Tales of Halloween. The film follows in the footsteps of previously released horror anthologies such as the Trick 'r Treat, V/H/S, and The ABCs of Death. I've always enjoyed watching movies like this! I grew up on films and shows such as Tales From the Crypt, Black Sabbath, Tales From the Dark Side, and the Creepshow. As long as Tales of Halloween turns out to be fun and entertaining I'll watch it.
The news come from Deadline, who reports that the movie will consist of ten segments from eleven directors. It will be an interconnected series of stories, and they will all be set in "a sleepy American suburb terrorized by ghouls, aliens, and killers one Halloween night."
The directors lined up to direct segments for the movie include Neil Marshall (The Descent), Darren Bousman (Saw II,...

Following the likes of the "VHS" and "ABCs Of Death" films, Epic Pictures Group is assembling its own horror anthology feature project and has hired some top-level genre filmmakers for the job.
"Tales Of Halloween" will collect ten segments from eleven directors into one interconnected series of stories set in a sleepy American suburb terrorised on Halloween night.
The most high profile directors involved are Neil Marshall ("The Descent," "Game of Thrones") and Darren Bousman ("Saw II," "Repo: The Genetic Opera"). The offerings on the big screen for Halloween this weekend are pretty weak with the only straight-up horror film in wide release being last weekend's holdover of Ouija. But if you're looking for a fun, thrilling, crazy ride, you should definitely check out Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal. However, it seems appropriate as All Hallow's Eve approaches that we get news of a holiday centric horror anthology in the works. Following in the footsteps of films like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, Epic Pictures Group is working on a new collection of horror shorts called Tales of Halloween, with 10 segments from 11 directors. More below! Deadline reports filmmakers include Darren Bousman (Saw II, III and IV), Neil Marshall ("Game of Thrones," The Descent), Joe Begos (Almost Human, not the TV show), Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy...

Do you like your horror in easily digestible bite-sized pieces thrown together by a spooky wraparound story? That’s right, you got it, I’m referring to the horror genre’s latest trend – anthology franchises. As V/H/S and The ABC’s Of Death have proven, fans are happily gobbling up this new stylistic angle, and now there’s another one afoot. Deadline reports that the Epic Pictures Group are assembling a new anthology called Tales Of Halloween.
The report suggests that this new approach will enlist a great many horror maestros for the upcoming outing. The biggest names leading the pack are Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) and Darren Bousman (Saw), who’ll no doubt attract fans who may not be familiar with some of the lesser-known filmmakers. That’s inevitably one of the most promising aspects of this type of film; offering fledgling directors the opportunity...

I know absolutely nothing about this movie, beyond the fact that it features Ed Furlong, and is supposedly some kind of post-apocalyptic horror film. I do love both Ed Furlong, and post-apocalyptic films, but neither of them have been very good to me in return as of late. I know most people hate the Night of the Demons remake, but I love it, and I love Furlong’s sleazy performance in that movie. Hopefully he brings what he considers to be his A-Game to this role, and there will be that for me to enjoy at the very least. Image Entertainment will be releasing the film on Blu-ray & DVD on August 26th. Check out the press release below.

With so many different apocalyptic interpretations floating around Hollywood these days, it’s always interesting to realize that the most underutilized Earth-destroying plot line remains one of the most realistic – nuclear fallout. Zombies hordes strike fear, Kaiju’s threaten massive devastation, aliens fight to control our brains, but a massive-scale nuclear war would leave entire cities vaporized, cause uncountable casualties, and create unlivable conditions for those “lucky” enough to survive. Even scarier is that although Aftermath is just a movie depicting what could happen if a governmental paranoia caused all-out nuclear war, these same fears have been around since Cold War era Russia – and with threatening terrorists, we haven’t escaped fears of life imitating art.
Radiation burns, illness, suffering – sometimes directors don’t need monsters and murderers as far as global horror is concerned.
The beginnings of this apocalyptic wasteland are a bit muddled, but after hearing frantic radio...

It is no secret that the genre of horror is saturated, like a wet diaper, with films that should never really have been made, films that are so bad they’re, well, bad. I know that sometimes a film is made that is often a train-wreck yet manages to be entertaining, but surrounding those films exists a bunch of motion picture atrocities that fail on all levels, and those are the films I’ll be looking at in this column. Now, you might not agree with the films I mention here, you might even be a fan of some of them, and that’s fine, this is merely my personal opinions on what I feel are the true horror’s of the horror genre, the poison in the water supply that made me, when I saw them, want to Linda Blair my guts against the nearest wall. These are in...

You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)
And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Fractured, formerly known as Schism, isn’t really a horror movie. It has a bit of an identity crisis, much like its lead character. Other traits it shares with its lead: It has problems with women, isn’t very captivating, and fails to make much of an impression. Filmmakers Adam Gierasch (co-writer/director) and Jace Anderson (co-writer/producer) have made far better features than this, including the 2009 Night of the Demons remake. Sadly, based on their latest effort they are not progressing. Fractured is shaky and jagged and feels like something from a first-time filmmaker. Callum Blue stars as Dylan, only that’s not his real name. Since waking up from a coma of more than 2 years, he has no memory. He leads a quiet, boring life and is a cook at a restaurant in New Orleans. He sleeps with Brandy (Ashlynn Yennie) from time to time, who notes that...

The Horror, the Horror!
Why isn’t there a quality, poker-themed horror movie? The title, "Poker Night: Dead Man's Hand," is a bit campy, but so are many horror movies. Imagine eight college grads uniting on a remote island for a night of boozing and strip poker. The plot writes itself. One by one, the clothing layers are removed and one by one, the players get lured from the table and slaughtered in a most grizzly fashion.
At the end, there is only one person left, and she (it has to be a she) is forced to play our killer in a poker game to the death. All you can see is the killer’s eyes behind a Yoda mask (or any other mask that terrifies you), as he deals the cards on the blood-soaked table. The girl shivers, forced to face her fears while playing the most important game of her life.

Run for Your Lives returned to the Southern California area, bringing with it a horde of zombies hungry for flags and armies of runners eager to zip through the 5k obstacle course.
The event works like this: A runner is equipped with three red flags that are strapped around his/her waist. The zombes populating the 5k course are out to get those flags. If a runner hits the finish line with at least one flag, they're a survivor. No flags? Their infected.
Much like last year, I hit the course - this time with my dear friend Bobbi Sue Luther (producer and former actress of Night of the Demons, Laid to Rest) - with a GoPro camera and running gear, provided by New Balance. After the jump, check out a highlight reel of the event. Do we come out on the other side survivors?
