One by one, people in different English counties receive the same grim, succinct, chilling note 'I know what you did'. They seem to have nothing in common, usually doing badly. A blind Yorkshire castle owner is systematically robbed, probably by his new social services-assigned community service condemned assistant Michael Fry. Scary, unsuccessful clown Mr. Jelly blames his professional state on the presumed sender of the note, Mr. Jolly. A midget does well as an actor but not in love. A fat old mother's baby looses another job because of his macabre obsessions. A Lamaze class instructor is obsessed with her child wish, transferred to the master demonstration dummy.

Dwarf Robert's delight over being seduced by the theatre company's foxiest actress turns into an utterly exposed nightmare on stage. The blind castle owner bids against his cuddly toys collecting nemesis sisters on eBay. David Sowerbutts's boss came to his home for an amicable settlement, but his mother turns it into the ultimate nightmare. Mr. Jelly's bitter attempt to take revenge on Mr. Jolly attracts his comeuppance. A new series of alarming notes is meanwhile delivered.

The bidding against the Siamese twins for the cuddly toy resumes at the owners' home, but the original is 'temporarily missing'. After all his mean abuse towards child-friendly colleague Mr. Jolly, whom he blames for the loss of his hand and hence clown career, mean clown Mr. Jelly is shown he misread the threat notes.
