Streaming service HBO Max will begin removing up to 36 titles, many of which are originals, from its digital library this week.
Earlier in August, HBO Max removed six film titles and also announced that it would no longer be releasing DC’s “Batgirl” or the animated “Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” The strategy is driven by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to combine HBO Max and Discovery+ next summer.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max said in a statement Wednesday. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”

An ongoing story as of late is the impact of the recent merger of Warner Bros Studios and Discovery. The new CEO, David Zaslav, has already made several controversial decisions that are currently being met with criticism. One big note is the canceling of two features that were near completion. DC’s Batgirl, and the animated film Scoob! Holiday Haunt was shelved with no intention of ever being released so the company could claim them as tax write-offs.
Another big money-saving decision was to pull movies and shows from their streaming platform, HBO Max, that were underperforming so they could save on residuals. The company had already silently pulled a few titles — as recent as the pandemic-shot 2021 film, Locked Down. But they have announced the removal of around 40 titles as early as this week.

HBO Max will remove almost 36 titles from its service as early as this week, Variety has confirmed.
A spokesperson for HBO Max attributed the decision to the pending merge of the platform with Discovery+, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max’s statement reads. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
Taking off the titles from streaming would also help Warner Bros. Discovery cut costs by removing lesser-watched programs to save money on residuals. An exact date or time when the titles will be taken off has not been announced.

After the debut of the original “Toxic Avenger” film, it became a cult classic and expanded into a musical production, children’s cartoon series and Marvel comic. Toxie has also since become a mascot of sorts for Troma Entertainment.

Legendary has closed a deal with Peter Dinklage to wield the mop and star in “The Toxic Avenger” reboot for Legendary, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Macon Blair will write and direct the adaptation of the cult-classic franchise that centers around the iconic superhero “Toxie.”
“The Toxic Avenger” follows the monstrous protector of Tromaville, New Jersey, born when the mild-mannered Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste. He’s transformed into a repulsive-yet-lovable mutant hero who stands up to bullies and corruption with irreverent zeal – doing good and brutally mauling evil in a no-holds-barred fashion.
Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers. Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee for Legendary.
Peter Dinklage is best known and received universal acclaim for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which garnered him four Primetime Emmy awards and a Golden Globe.

Jamie Dornan was in lockdown with his family when he received a fan letter that was more than a little creepy. The star of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies was sent “a collage of photographs of a kid,” with a note about his most famous role.
“Someone saying that it was my kid, and my wife should know that I have this kid who’s 7 years old,” Dornan, 38, says over a Zoom call. He squints to absorb the weirdness of this allegation. “I think they were trying to say that the kid was mine and Dakota Johnson’s, and we’d had this baby while we made the first ‘Fifty Shades’ movie,” Dornan says. “It piqued our interest, let’s say. It was a bit freaky.”
Dornan learned all about freaky things when he suited up as Christian Grey, the sexually adventurous businessman based on the E.L. James books that became a cultural phenomenon.

In the age of streaming, the phrase “TV-movie” has been rendered all but meaningless. It now encompasses everything from a Disney Channel musical like “Zombies 2” to “My Dinner with Hervé” to “Mank.” But 30 or 40 years ago, the phrase “TV-movie” meant something specific — a two-hour drama made for one of the big three networks (who were the only game in town), and it also meant a “movie” that had a certain cheesy overexplicit cardboard quality. Not to be a snob about it, but a TV-movie wasn’t cinema; it was…TV. (This was back when pointing that out wasn’t insulting an art form.)
To be sure, there were a small number of great TV-movies, like “Brian’s Song” or Spielberg’s “Duel” or the Sally Field tour de force “Sybil.” But most of the time the form was decidedly declassé. And on Nov. 20, 1983, when ABC aired “The Day After,” its...

Tonight at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage took home his fourth and final Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, for his turn as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s blockbuster series. Tonight’s victory gives Dinklage the record for the most wins ever in this category—a distinction previously held by Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul.
“I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is all about tolerance and diversity, because nowhere else could I be standing on a stage like this,” the Emmy winner said, in accepting the award. “It’s been about 10 years, all said and done, from the moment I met [series creators] David [Benoiff] and Dan [Weiss] till now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew that David and Dan were quite brilliant…We did nothing but sweat, we did nothing but laugh.

At one time this was one of Emmy’s most sought after and prestigious prizes, but as the Limited Series format became more attractive, and a magnet for top talent, the TV Movie category is just a shell of what it used to be. The numbers say it all. Only one of the five nominees received more than two nominations overall, and three of the nominees find their only Emmy mention right here—not a great indication of widespread support for this form in the Academy, to say the least. Netflix has actually won here a couple of times by plucking episodes from their popular anthology series, Black Mirror, and labeling them ‘movies’. A new rule instituted this year requires an entry to run at least 75 minutes long, which would have disqualified two of the past three winners here.

At this year’s Emmys, some contenders in a few series categories could see their odds of winning affected by the fact that their leading men are not nominated as well. However, it should not be assumed that their odds will be affected negatively.
“It’s like a rally cry,” awards strategist Michele Robertson says of the chatter around performers who didn’t earn noms. “It makes people take notice, and it certainly brings the awareness. The trick has always been to ensure that people watch your show, so they can have a point of view on it when they’re voting.”
Among shows nominated sans their lead actors are Netflix’s “Bodyguard” and HBO’s “Succession,” both on the drama series ballot. “Bodyguard’s” titular leading man, Richard Madden, had been considered a frontrunner by many, in part because of the intensity of the role, which earned him a Golden Globe in January.

The limited series race at this year’s Emmys may be the most cutthroat, high-stakes battle of any category. Though featuring only a fraction of the hundreds of submissions featured in comedy and drama, the unusually strong crop of limited series means that multiple big-name, big budget projects are on a crash course to duking it out in September. Assuming, of course, that voters can determine which shows are worthy of nominations.
IndieWire is here to help. As we did with both drama and comedy, TV Awards Editor Libby Hill and TV Critic Ben Travers have selected an ideal ballot of more-than-worthy contenders from the 35 limited series, 21 TV movies, and 300-some performers submitted.
While there’s no way to represent all the excellent would-be Emmy nominees out there, the list below highlights critical voices in the TV industry and cuts out the riffraff so you have a clear picture of the best options.

Indeed, in the spirit of the Oscars-dominating Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, and the buzz-generating Elton John biopic, Rocketman (which hits theaters this weekend), the ostentatiously gender-bending frontman of Culture Club is getting a big screen portrayal of his own from a major studio.
The Boy George biopic, currently untitled, is in the works at MGM, which will produce the film, reports Deadline. The studio has already found its creative fulcrum in Sacha Gervasi, who will serve as director and writer, joined by producers Kevin King Templeton (Creed) and Paul Kemsley, as well as executive producers George and Jessica de Rothschild.

Last Year’s Winner: Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: An actor from “American Crime Story” has won for each of the FX franchise’s nominated seasons. Darren Criss won in 2018 for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and Courtney B. Vance won for his role as Johnnie Cochran in “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” “American Crime Story” is also the only program to win more than one trophy in the Best Limited Series or TV Movie category.
Fun Fact: Benedict Cumberbatch is one nomination away from tying the record for most nominations in the category. Currently, he’s at six nominations — six nominations in seven years, mind you — while Hal Holbrook has the most with seven. He’ll need a few more wins to threaten that champion, however. Laurence Olivier has four wins to Cumberbatch’s one.
Notable Ineligible Series: Cody Fern,...

It’s been a long journey back to the screen for “Deadwood.” But now fans and awards prognosticators alike have something to pay attention to.
HBO has released the first look at “Deadwood: The Movie,” along with a very carefully timed May 31 release date. Arriving with enough of a cushion after the end of “Game of Thrones,” this continuation of David Milch’s beloved three-season chronicle of the lawless South Dakota town premieres on the last day of the Emmy eligibility calendar.
This sneak peek below features the return of most of the original series’ central cast. Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, John Hawkes and more are back to put a cap on a series that’s stayed dormant since the original series aired its last episode in 2006. The official “Deadwood: The Movie” logline explains that “the indelible characters of the show are reunited after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood.
