Anime is saturated with superpowers. Strength. Intelligence. Charisma. Most characters have one or all three of these qualities. But what about when you don’t live in the spotlight as the most enviable hero? What about when the world is stacked against you in the most basic of ways, and what about those who suffer from an accessibility standpoint? Today, on Global Accessability Awareness Day , I’m going to take a closer look at three anime that deal with invisible disabilities, primarily deafness, and how characters overcome the challenges they face. To show the way people with disabilities interact in the world and with others without reducing them to their conditions is no small feat. It takes a tremendous amount of care and empathy, and encourages those of us who struggle that we matter. We’re seen. These anime are giving voice and shedding light and awareness on something that is often neglected or avoided.

We know that Warner Bros. is working on increasing its anime library, which is probably a move motivated by Netflix’s and Disney’s “attacks” on the anime market. And while Warner Bros. is slowly working towards its goal, we know that a major title is coming soon. Since Warner is the owner of the rights to DC’s series, they have decided to build on the success of the Batman-themed anime film, Batman Ninja, by creating an anime series based on DC’s characters. Suicide Squad Isekai will see the titular group of supervillains enter a “new world” to complete a mission and we have finally received a release window for the series, as well as a new character trailer.
The series was announced a while ago and will, according to Warner’s plans, be the first in a series of anime versions of DC’s stories. This won...

While "Dune: Part Two" continues to dominate the box office, Netflix is bringing a whole lot of new titles to the platform -- and we're doing our best to make sure that not all of them get lost in the algorithm.
This April, Netflix is bringing some highly anticipated titles, including what was once meant to be a spin-off of "Doom Patrol" (the best superhero show that isn't a superhero show), a brand new anime from the studio behind "Ranking of Kings," and not one but two live-action adaptations of beloved manga — including one created by the director of "Train to Busan."
Because of the almighty algorithm, it can be hard to filter through the many titles getting released on streaming every week, let alone know they even exist. That's what this guide is for, as we go through our top picks for what we're hoping are some of the...

Since Frieren has lived for hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of years, the passing of time isn’t that big of a deal to her. Ten years, fifty years, none of it mattered… until human mortality came into effect. That’s when she paused to really reflect on life and the human experience, realizing how short (and precious) it is. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End actually starts at the end of an adventure, leading to the passing of the old heroes of Frieren’s party. This sparks the adventures of the titular character further, most notably, her taking in a young girl named Fern as her apprentice. Together they embark on a new journey where they begin to understand human emotions, discover the meaning of life and garner magical knowledge. Netflix seems to be making the same mistake every big studio does — jumping the gun to launching big franchises and cinematic universes out of untested hits.
According to Bloomberg, the streamer is already developing a spin-off of "Wednesday," this time focused on Fred Armisen's Uncle Fester. This news comes before production even begins on "Wednesday" season 2. Granted, as Guillermo del Toro has sadly taught us all, just because something is said to be in development doesn't mean it will get to see the light of day. Still, the Bloomberg report says Netflix is "eager to establish a pipeline of 'Addams Family' programs to build off the success of 'Wednesday.'" This means that if this one doesn't work, they still have other ones to try out, as the streamer apparently wants to Dark Universe "The Addams Family."

Anime has catapulted in popularity the past couple of decades, with movies big and small all adding Easter eggs and references to the biggest animated shows out of Japan. We've also seen streamers like Netflix invest heavily in anime, collaborating with anime studios to produce animated adaptations of known franchises like "The Witcher" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." Even "Star Wars" has gotten into the anime game with "Star Wars: Visions."
The rise in popularity of anime in the West has also happened current with the rise of the "isekai" genre. The family sitcom is a staple of American television, a genre that has drawn audiences for decades by poking fun at daily life and the perceived idea of the nuclear family. It's no wonder that the biggest American animated shows are sitcoms, like "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and even "Rick and Morty."
I firmly believe that the easiest anime to recommend to people not already familiar with the medium are those that are in some way recognizable to them. Shows like "Attack on Titan" start out as a more messed up "The Walking Dead," and "Monster" essentially operates like an animated prestige TV drama. This week's big streaming releases include the return of "Sweet Tooth," a rare post-apocalyptic tale that's all about optimism (and cute critters), and the premiere of "Citadel," the second-most-expensive TV show ever made and the hopeful start of a global franchise. Elsewhere, if you want more apocalyptic fun with big smiles and dark undertones, there's "Ranking of Kings" and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts." Or perhaps you want something before the apocalypse but with dark forces starting to gather, like the criminally underseen "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." For something completely different, "Person of Interest" is a spy thriller with some rather prescient thoughts about AI, "Source Code" is a fun sci-fi time loop thriller, "Spies in Disguise," is a hilarious take on the "James Bond" formula, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" stares at the end of the world and chooses kindness.

The Series: "Ranking of Kings"
Where You Can Stream It: Crunchyroll
The Pitch: One of our favorite anime titles of 2022, "Ranking of Kings" is the ultimate underdog story. The anime series follows Bojji, a young prince who aspires to become the king of his kingdom one day, much like his father. However, his ambition is met with doubters. Bojji is often ridiculed by his half-brother and the rest of the kingdom due to being deaf, mute, and physically weak compared to his giant parent. His disabilities do not affect his well-meaning heart, which is always trying to help others and do the best he can, no matter what anyone says.
After his younger brother Daida is crowned king, Bojji and his...

What if "Happy Tree Friends" came back in 2022, but it was a gritty war film about the horrors of fascism and religious zealotry? You'd get something like "Unicorn Wars," a brutal, disturbing war film disguised as a candy-colored cartoon about cuddly teddy bears. Alberto Vázquez's sophomore feature, "Unicorn Wars," features fantastic animation and gorgeous use of color that is juxtaposed with some of the gnarliest imagery put to an animated film in over a decade. Sadly, it suffers from "short-turned-into-a-feature" syndrome, with flashbacks that feel unnecessary, repetitive scenes and plot beats, and a pacing that slows down in order to pad the runtime, before it picks back up with a guts-spilling, blood-soaking, nightmare-inducing climax.
Alberto Vázquez is no stranger to using the (very stupid) assumption that animation is for kids to deliver dark and horrific adult animated movies. His feature debut, "Birdboy: The Forgotten Children," based on a short by Vásquez,...

Since 1979, the TV academy has honored the field of animation by awarding the Best Animated Program Emmy on an annual basis. In its current form, this primetime category allows submissions targeted at audiences aged 13 and above, with series and specials made for younger viewers being relegated to the Children’s and Family Emmys. Since the creation of a separate short form category in 2008, submissions here have also been required to have runtimes in excess of 15 minutes.
The 2022 Best Animated Program ballot list below consists of 42 entries. Per category rules, all are either one-off specials or single episodes of continuing series. Seeking their dozenth victory and first since 2019 is the team behind “The Simpsons,” who just wrapped their 33rd season. Other shows hoping for repeat wins this year include “Archer,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Rick and Morty,” and “South Park.”
