Japanese manga series “Tiger Mask” is being adapted into a live-action feature for the international market by Italy’s Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box and Japan’s Kodansha.
The popular manga, which follows a ruthless professional Japanese wrestler named Naoto Date who after making it big in the U.S. returns to his country and fights against evil forces, previously inspired an anime TV series made by Japan’s Toei Animation.
“Tiger Mask’ is a long-beloved figure both in Japan and Italy, where he’s been [considered] a strong, cool and timeless hero since the series’ first release in 1969,” Yohei Takami, head of Kodansha’s media business rights division, said in a statement.
“We are excited to be able to bring a new ‘Tiger Mask’ to global audiences, partnering with respected Italian filmmakers sharing the love and passion for ‘Tiger Mask’ with us, like Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box,” he added.

In his film “The Mute Man of Sardinia” (“Il Muto di Gallura”) Turin-born Matteo Fresi reignites the feud between the Vasa and Mamia families, which caused the deaths of more than 70 people in mid-19th century Sardinia. Focusing on deaf-mute Bastiano Tansu, he shows an outsider who – mistreated and marginalized all his life – turned into a feared assassin, driven into a killing frenzy following his brother’s murder.
“My father is from Sardinia, from Gallura, so I would hear about these events a lot. It’s a famous story in that region, yet completely unknown in the rest of the country,” Fresi tells Variety after the film’s premiere at Torino Film Festival, admitting that he reached out to the locals in order to find out a bit more. In 1884, Enrico Costa published a novel about Tansu, described by the helmer as a “very precise” take on the violent conflict.

Photo: ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’/Netflix Knowing absolutely nothing about someone should not discourage viewers from indulging in the ever-revered and held to extremely low standards genre of the biopic. On the contrary, it is the job of good biopics to establish who the person was to the world and in a private sense to make a good case that this is someone we should care about. I cannot say with confidence that ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’, directed by Letizia Lamartire, succeeds in this task. "People love you so much because you showed them you're human." Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for Baggio: The Divine Ponytail, also known as Il Divin Codino (which is just "The Divine Ponytail") in Italian. The Netflix film retraces the 22-year-long career of famous football / soccer player Roberto Baggio, focusing on the champions' story and the one of the man behind it. By telling the story of the rise of both the champion and the man behind it, the conflicts with his coaches, the unforeseen events and an extraordinary ability to react, it paints the portrait of an icon destined to become, over the years, a symbol of Italian football throughout the world. Huzzah! It will also take a closer look at the man himself, his relationship with his family, and his Buddhist beliefs. It's not a documentary film, but a fictionalization, starring Andrea Arcangeli as Roberto Baggio.
