Leonard Nimoy, the eloquent, baritone-voiced actor and director who will forever be remembered as the Starship Enterprise's supremely logical half-human, half-Vulcan science officer Spock, died on Friday in Los Angeles. He was 83 years old.
Although his most recent major television role was on Fox's "Fringe," Nimoy's work on the television series "Star Trek" led to Spock becoming one of the most beloved sci-fi characters in the history of the genre. It also earned him three Emmy nominations for the role. Today Spock's V-shaped Vulcan hand salute, accompanied by the gentle benediction, "Live long and prosper," is recognized around the world. The "Star Trek" franchise may have defined the better part of Nimoy's career and made him a pop culture icon, but the man was as versatile as he was famous. He authored a number of books, recorded several albums, directed television episodes and theatrical releases (including the 1987 comedy blockbuster 3 Men and a Baby) and won critical notice as a respected photographer over the course of his lifetime.
Born in Boston on March 26, 1931, to Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Nimoy began acting in community theater at the age of eight. His first major role came at age 17, when he played Ralphie in an amateur production of Clifford Odets's "Awake and Sing." After receiving career advice from an actor in another Odets play making its pre-Broadway debut in Boston, he submitted an application to California's Pasadena Playhouse. Nimoy would then relocate to the West Coast using his earnings from selling vacuum cleaners.
Nimoy made his film debut at age 20 in the 1951 film Queen for a Day, and won a small role as a ballplayer in the film Rhubarb, which was released in the same year. His first movie lead was the title role in the 1952 film Kid Monk Baroni. Nimoy then took drama classes at Boston College in 1953.
Following a stint in the Army between 1953 and 1955, Nimoy had guest starring roles in a number of television series. Starting in 1958, he appeared in "Sea Hunt," "Highway Patrol," "Bonanza," "The Untouchables," "Get Smart" and "The Virginian." He also guest starred in an episode of "The Twilight Zone" titled "A Quality of Mercy," and would work with his future co-star and friend William Shatner in the "The Project Strigas Affair" episode of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
But it was Nimoy's role in a 1964 episode of "The Lieutenant" that caught the eye of a producer and writer named Gene Roddenberry, who cast Nimoy in his new series "Star Trek." Nimoy is the only member of "Star Trek's" main cast to appear in every episode of the series, including the original unaired pilot. Of the famous Vulcan salute, Nimoy once explained that he based it on the way the rabbis in his childhood held their hands while giving blessings. (He also invented the Vulcan nerve pinch when he and the "Trek" writers needed a non-violent means for Spock to overpower an enemy.) The series only ran until 1969, but went on to inspire a movie franchise and four spinoffs. Nimoy co-starred with the rest of the original cast in the first six installments of the theatrical series, starting with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979. He also directed the third and fourth "Trek" films, 1984's Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Nimoy returned to play Spock Prime for J.J. Abrams' 2009 resurrection of the theatrical franchise and its sequel, Star Trek: Into Darkness.
After the original "Star Trek's" cancellation, Nimoy joined the cast of "Mission: Impossible" playing The Great Paris, a master of impersonation. The actor stayed with that series until 1971. He enjoyed roles in a number of television movies, eventually earning a best supporting actor Emmy nomination for "A Woman Called Golda" in 1982.
Nimoy did not limit his artistic exploration to stage and screen, however. He authored several books of poetry and two autobiographies, the first being the somewhat-controversial 1977 tome "I Am Not Spock," which examined his self-declared identity crisis brought on by being associated with the character. His second, 1995's "I Am Spock," revealed that he had reached a certain peace with the influence the role had on his life. He also recorded several albums, most of which are considered to be masterpieces of unintentional camp.
Nimoy was an avid photographer, having studied photography at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1970s. In 2002 he released a provocative collection of photographs titled "The Shekhina Project," which drew controversy for its depiction of Jewish female nudes. Five years after its publication, Nimoy examined the beauty in plus-sized women for 2007's "The Full Body Project."
Nimoy's final TV role was in "Fringe," in which he played genius scientist and Massive Dynamic CEO William Bell, and his final voice-acting role was for the animated film Zambezia.
The actor also was very active on social media, sharing affirmations and words of wisdom on Twitter accompanied by his sign-off, "LLAP," or "Live Long and Prosper." His final tweet, dated February 22, told his 1.13 million followers, "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. "
Nimoy is survived by his wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, his two children, director Adam Nimoy and Julie Nimoy, from his previous marriage to Sandra Zober, as well as a stepson and several grandchildren.

The feature is choreographed by eight-time World Hip Hop Championships winner Parris Goebel, a faculty member of Monsters of Hip Hop, and recent star in her own right of "Step Up All In."
U.S. bombshell Kherington Payne plays Sasha, the female lead in the multi-million dollar feature. She was also the lead in E! Networks docu-drama The Dance Scene, and was a principal dancer for Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream tour.
"Born To Dance" is a coming of age tale told through the eyes of ‘Tu’, an ambitious young man from Auckland who dreams of being a professional hip hop dancer. When he is invited to audition for the best crew in the country, and meets their leading lady Sasha, his dreams begin to turn to reality.
Australasian superstar Stan Walker will play the role of Benjy, Tu’s best friend. Walker shot to fame when he won the first season of Australian Idol and has since cemented his stardom with multiple platinum albums, appearing as a judge on The X Factor New Zealand, and a leading role in the 2013 feature film "Mt Zion."
Tammy Davis will direct, following from his award-winning shorts "Ebony Society" and "Sonny, My Older Brother." New discovery Tia Maipi, a member of world championship hip hop crew The Royal Family, will take on his first major acting role playing Tu.
Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post are the post-production partner, while Vendetta Films will distribute in Aus/Nz. Edward Noeltner’s Cinema Management Group begin world sales at the upcoming Afm. Noeltner says:

Edward Noeltner has been a friend of ours in and out of 'the business' (as those of us who work in it tend to call it) for many years now. Our families know each other and we have been on many nice social occasions to each other's homes.
Thus we have a lovely personal connection to this great film guy.
So it is with impressed awe that we have watched his company expand and continue to represent great and important films.
Edward was born in New Jersey and moved at one year of age to Munich, Germany. His dad was Head of Radio Liberty, a Us government sponsored radio station that beamed Us government propaganda (let's call it that) to the countries of the (then large and active and now gone) Soviet Union.
He lived in Munich West Germany, and on September 4, 1972 attended the Olympic Games there. He describes it like this. 'The atmosphere that day was very free spirited and lively in the Olympic Village. Then the next day - massacre.' On September 5, 1972 disaster struck the Olympics. The sporting nature of which was largely overshadowed by the Munich massacre in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches, a West German police officer, and five Palestinian Black September militants were killed.
He left Germany in 1973. But he had grown up at his father's workplace, and knew radio production and and often hung out at the Munich station. From Germany he moved to Arizona where he attended high school in Tucson. He worked there at radio and TV stations in the newsroom of the local CBS affiliate. 'I fell naturally into this as I had developed such a love of radio and news as a boy'.
He remembers the great Fellini film 8 1/2 particularly arousing his interest in film and especially European cinema.
In Tucson he began to habituate their great (and still thriving) arthouse cinema The Loft.
He entered the University of Arizona / Tucson to get a degree from theDepartment handling Radio TV Film Drama. 'I was very close to getting my Master's there when I left'.
He decided then to move to USC instead to get a Masters Degree and was there from 1980-84.
It was there he met his wife who also studied there, the French national Marie Christine. In 1984 they moved to Paris.
He first worked for Europe Export Films and stayed with them for 7 years. In 1994 he started Senator International in Berlin and stayed until 1996.
He then moved on to Pandora Cinema of Paris where we first met him when he worked there with Ernst Goldschmidt and Sudy Coy.
In 1998 Pandora was sold to Gaylord Entertainment (which Edward describes as 'a mainstream company').
In 1999 Svensk of Copenhagen offered him a good job opportunity. They had a nice library of 40 plus film titles.
He came as they had just gotten Faithless, based on an Ingmar Bergmann script and directed by the great Bergman actress Liv Ulman. Edward says, 'Big success. It sold everywhere and was in the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection'.
Edward also had an Oscar Nomination there with Under the Sun by Colin Nutley.
In 2001 he accepted a Miramax offer to become Head of Sales for the Weinstein brothers in New York. Chicago was just one of their great titles which had a very good run.
In 2003 he decided to move to La and start his own sales company, Cinema Management Group / Cmg. Off to a good start one of his first films, the animation Hoodwinked grossed $110 million worldwide.
Since 2003, Cmg has added over 100 titles to its line-up which includes quality feature films of all genres, 3-D animated features and series as well as award winning feature length documentaries and series.
Over the past 25 years, Edward Noeltner has licensed some 16 Oscar nominated features (many of them Oscar winners) and has worked with some of the most creative individuals in the industry. Films like Scott Hick’s Shine, Carlos Saura’s Tango, Liv Ullmann’s Faithless, or Rob Marshall’s Chicago are just some of the many memorable feature films Noeltner has been associated with in terms of int’l sales.
Since its inception, Cmg has been known for offering original, commercial properties. Cmg co-executive producing the cult animated series "Happy Tree Friends" and licensed both DVD and Television rights to the series in over 40 int’l territories including the Us and Canada. Today, Cmg offers an array of exciting new 3-D Digital CGI animated features, all independently produced with amazing voice talents such as Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson, Abigail Breslin, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and Liam Neeson along with some of the finest animators working in the business. Cmg’s collaboration with Triggerfish Animation – Adventures In Zambezia– garnered over Us$ 26million in its theatrical run with a number of major territories still to be released.
This Afm Edward and Cmg are launching a mixed agenda of films and he is especially high on the thriller
Plastic
This following company promo makes me want to see it:
High octane from start to finish, Plastic is based on the incredible true story of a heist of one of Beverly Hills’ top jewelry merchants. Brilliant college student Sam has the perfect credit card scam…until his crew robs the wrong man. Now they have two weeks to repay ruthless gangster Marcel Us$2 million or they will be dead. Sam and his team devise a scheme to clear their debt by heading to Miami to poach enough cash and merchandise. But they come up short. So Sam and his gang set their sights on a daring jewelry heist that could make them hugely wealthy for life. Their plan turns sour, however, when the team members start turning on each other. Now it’s up to Sam to finish the brazen heist and turn the tables on Marcel before they all go down.
Cmg at Afm will also have the supernatural horror feature
The Hunted : In an attempt to land their own TV show, Jake (Josh Stewart) and Stevie (Ronnie Gene Blevins) head to the dense, secluded mountains of West Virginia. Equipped with only their bow and cameras, they have three days to kill a monster buck big enough to grab the attention of a TV network. Once they find the massive animal, they look to strike fast. But as the sun sets, they realize they're not alone. A supernatural force appears to be lurking in the vacant woods... and now they're the ones being hunted.

Saving Santa 3D : At the top of the North Pole, Bernard is an elf in Santa’s workshop who’s always messing up. One morning, after sleeping in late, Santa kindly shows Bernard the oh-so-secret time machine on his sleigh, which almost no one knows about. Suddenly, Bernard finds army commandos raiding the North Pole, demanding to know the location of his coveted time machine. If the world were to discover the exact location and existence of the North Pole, it would ruin Christmas for everyone! Bernard runs to the time machine and activates the device, going back in time to that same morning. Now it’s a race against time to forge a plot with any elf that will believe his tale, and save Santa before the world finds out the secret of Christmas.
And
The Santa Story: Inspired by Frank L. Baum’s timeless classic, take a magical 3D animated journey to uncover the true origins of the little boy named Nick who grew up to become Santa Claus. Set in his childhood village, join in Little Nick’s first real life adventures which teach him the gift of giving and the powerful spirit of community. As Nick grows up, he must confront his own self-doubts and bring everyone together to keep his old foe Rolf from taking over his village. With the help of two amazingly crafty elves, a majestic reindeer and a group of lovable orphans, Nick rebuilds his hometown and finally becomes the man we all know and love – Santa Claus.
Another kiddie animation film that looks great, about a half-striped zebra proving himself on the African plains
Khumba : When Khumba, a half-striped zebra is blamed for the lack of rain by the rest of his insular, superstitious herd, he embarks on a daring quest to earn his stripes. In his search for the legendary waterhole in which the first zebras got their stripes, Khumba meets a quirky range of characters, and teams up with an unlikely duo: an overprotective wildebeest, Mama V, and Bradley, a self-obsessed ostrich. But before he can reunite with his herd, Khumba will have to come face to face with Phango, a scary leopard who controls the waterholes and terrorizes all the animals in the Great Karoo.
It's not all black and white in this colorful adventure with a difference!
Afm will also see Cmg's quality drama, the Barreto family Produced/ Directed
Reaching for the Moon : Frustrated poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Brazil and encounters the beguiling architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Initial hostilities make way for a complicated yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her. Anchored by magnificent lead performances from Miranda Otto and Gloria Pires, Reaching for the Moon is an intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration, wherever and however you find it
Cmg also has quality documentaries like Rob Stewart's ambitious feature that tours the planet with an inspiring and beautiful ecological message about saving our world.
Revolution : Continuing his adventurous journey around the world, filmmaker Rob Stewart brings us Revolution, a full length feature film that is inspiring humans to change the world and save our planet.

"The Place Beyond the Pines"
What's It About? In "A Place Beyond the Pines" Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") weaves together three vignettes starring Ryan Gosling as a bleach blonde, motorcycle-riding bank robber, Eva Mendes as a tough single mother, and Bradley Cooper as a conflicted cop. The first part of the film follows Luke (Gosling) as he robs banks to support his unexpected child and to win back the mother Romina (Mendes). Halfway through "Pines" breaks off to tell the story of Avery (Cooper), a wounded cop who discovers corruption in his department.
Why We're In: While "Pines" breaks off suddenly in various directions, the film's audacious screenplay and structure are what make it so powerful and compelling. Cianfrance's drama is one of novelistic proportions and definitely worth its long running time.

Film: "Zambezia"; Voiceovers: Jeremy Suarez, Samuel J. Jackson, Jennifer Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum, Richard E. Grant, Jamal Mixon, Jim Cummings; Director: Wayne Thornley; Rating: ** and 1/2
This animated film in 2D and 3D versions from South Africa is at par with any other such from Hollywood. It is innocently and delightfully mesmerising. It is also colourful and lively with a birdy - entertainment.
The film begins with Kai (Jeremy Suarez) a young, enthusiastic and lonely falcon living in the barren Katungu desert of Africa questioning his reclusive father, Tendai (Samuel J. Jackson), "Is living all about surviving?" when his father was training him to be the fastest lizard grabber.
Just.

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Which of 2012′s animated films drew the most applause? According to the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, the options include Pixar’s Brave, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians. All three — among others — were nominated for animation’s highest honor today when the group named the contenders for its 40th annual Annie Awards. The prizes will be distributed Saturday, Feb. 2 in Los Angeles.

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

Yesterday when I showed you the list of the 21 Animated Feature contenders for the 2013 Oscars there were five films I didn't yet have information on -- Adventures in Zambezia, Delhi Safari, Hey Krishna, The Mystical Laws and Walter & Tandoori's Christmas. Well, I did a little scrounging and have come up with details on all five including trailers for each and only one of them is lacking subtitles. I have included information on all five below along with their trailers and, again, you can check out the full list of contenders here and I will be updating my Best Animation predictions very soon. Adventures in Zambezia Director: Wayne Thornley Voice Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Leonard Nimoy, Abigail Breslin, Jeff Goldblum, Richard E. Grant, Jeremy Suarez and Jenifer Lewis Synopsis: Frustrated with his isolated upbringing, a young falcon journeys to the bird city of Zambezia, leaving his home and father to make a life for himself.

Three animated feature films we've profiled here on S&A are among twenty-one animated features that have been submitted to the Academy for Best Animated Award Oscar consideration; and those three films are: Adventures in Zambezia, Rise of the Guardians, and Zarafa. Zambezia is a new feature film from Triggerfish Animation Studios, about a young high-spirited falcon who journeys to the famed bird city of Zambezia, "far away in the heart of Africa." Voice work is provided by Abigail Breslin, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, and Samuel L. Jackson in starring bird voice roles. The title Zambezia likely comes from...

Twenty-one features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 85th Academy Awards. This means that there will likely be five nominations announced on January 10, although several films listed below have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying runs, the Academy points out. Presumably they will fulfill all the requirements. Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, but I doubt that any of these will chase that down. I bold the five front-runners for Oscar noms. The 21 submitted features, listed in alphabetical order by title, are: "Adventures in Zambezia" "Brave" "Delhi Safari" "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" "Frankenweenie" "From Up on Poppy Hill" ...

Abigail Breslin sure has an affinity for horror movies. She was that quiet little girl leaving glasses of water everywhere in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs in 2002, then had a starring role alongside Homeland star Damien Lewis in Keane, and co-starred with Emma Stone in Zombieland. And now she will star alongside Halle Berry in another horror flick called The Hive.
Variety says that Breslin will star in Brad Anderson’s newest movie, The Hive, which follows a 9-1-1 operator (Berry) who must work to save a young girl (Breslin), who is being attacked by a serial killer. The movie was to be directed by Joel Schumacher, but he was replaced by Anderson. The Hive was written by Rich D’Ovidio.
Breslin was last seen in Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve and has two films coming out this year: Stanley M. Brooks’s Perfect Sisters and Wayne Thornley’s animated Zambezia.
