Plot: A Naval officer (Jake Lacy) is on trial for mutiny. His court-appointed attorney (Jason Clarke) must prove that his captain (Kiefer Sutherland) was dangerously unbalanced and that mutiny was the only solution to protect the crew.
Review: The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is an interesting final film for the late William Friedkin. While most know him for his seventies epics, having directed at least three or four of the greatest films ever made, many don’t know that he started his career with a couple of films based on stage plays: The Birthday Party and The Boys in the Band. His most recent work, Bug and Killer Joe, were also stage adaptations (of works by Tracy Letts), but The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is more traditionally mounted than those. This is basically a stage play put to film, with no exteriors, no music and only two sets.

The last works by artists who have just died often acquire a strange patina of significance. Whether the deceased knew the work would be their last or not, it’s almost impossible not to read into them a foreshadowing of the maker’s imminent departure, a railing against the dying of the light or a tidy return to earlier themes.
The storied director William Friedkin passed on Aug. 7 at the age of 87, just weeks after he completed his last feature film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. I don’t know if Friedkin was aware this would be his last when he decided to make it, but it does feel like a fitting final artistic word in many ways. Like so many of his other movies, it’s pithy, punchy, a little shouty at times, but made with brio and swagger.
From the earliest days of his filmmaking career, he was drawn to theatrical material.

Turns out, all you need is Louvre. After Heartstopper sent Tao and Elle on the date from hell in Season 2’s third episode (recapped here), we were afraid that that was it; they were friend-zoned for life. But in Episode 5, “Heat,” a trip to the museum gives the would-be sweethearts an unexpected second chance at romance.
Inspired by her surroundings, Elle sits down to sketch. (Alas, no shoe potato this time.) Right by her side, Tao is suggesting that more movies should be shot in the Louvre and complaining that the only one he can think of is the “monstrosity...

It’s been a long while since a male solo artist has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And according to results from our recent poll, the one you most want for induction in 2020 is the late Warren Zevon. He narrowly defeated such rock heavyweights as George Michael, Phil Collins and Todd Rundgren in our poll.
Shockingly, no male solo artists were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the past two years. This astounding fact follows several years of voters catching up on such artists as Neil Diamond (2011), Donovan (2012), Peter Gabriel (2014), Randy Newman (2013), Lou Reed (2015), Steve Miller (2016), Cat Stevens (2014) and Bill Withers (2015).
We also recently offered very popular polls about which rock group you wanted next (won by The Doobie Brothers) and which female artist you would choose.
Here are the final poll results for the dozen men in our poll:

Adam Zwar rose to fame after co-creating cult series Wilfred. The multi-award winning actor and writer has since launched Lowdown, twentysomething and Agony Uncles. Series two of Lowdown can be seen on the ABC later this year and series two of the Us version of Wilfred will screen on Eleven in July.
The biggest issue facing the Australian film or TV industry is: Earnestness.
Best movie quote of all time: Uncle Monty in Withnail and I: I.m preparing myself to forgive you.
Do you Google yourself? Of course . who.d Google me if I didn.t?
If you could live inside one of your shows, would you? Which one? Lowdown. Alex Burchill has no responsibilities whatsoever.
Classics I would like to remake: Hannah And Her Sisters.
Favourite comedy film/show of all time: The Larry Sanders Show.
Favourite comedian? A tie between Jerry Seinfeld, Garry Shandling, Larry David and Ricky Gervais.

This article was originally published in If Magazine #145 (Feb - March 2012). The third series of Offspring is currently screening on Ten.
The Red Epic has quickly gained a stronghold among big-budget 3D feature films: highly-anticipated features such Peter Jackson.s The Hobbit trilogy, Ridley Scott.s Prometheus and Bryan Singer.s Jack the Giant Killer among them.
But the appeal of the camera.s small size, 3D capabilities and increased resolution has not been limited to the big end of town. Popular local drama Offspring is the first local TV series to add an Epic to its Red-dominated camera lineup.
Cinematographer John Brawley says the camera size . which is less than half that of the Red Mx . and its ability to shoot at 300 frames per second was part of the appeal.

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

Amanda Jane’s comedy The Wedding Party (previously known as Kin) will open this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival.
“We had the title in the back of our minds for a long time, as an alternative title. We decided to change it because the film is entertaining, fun, and we wanted a title that suited those aspects more. It’s full of music, a fantastic cast and great comic actors,” director Amanda Jane told Encore.
Written by Christine Bartlett and produced by Nicole Minchin (ABC TV’s Lowdown), The Wedding Party received support from the Miff Premiere Fund.
The film is set for distribution by Arkles Entertainment. When the company shut down its New Zealand operation in early March, MD John Davies told Encore that “Arkles Australia remains and goes on, and The Wedding Party is still contracted with us. We are in the market for a partner on...
