Exclusive: Mark Pellegrino, known for series including Supernatural, 13 Reasons Why and American Rust, has been set to star in dramedy series A Motel.
Brian A. Metcalf (Underdeveloped) is behind the show about a group of outcasts working at a seedy motel who find themselves in danger when they accidentally uncover a drug smuggling plot for the mafia. Additional casting is being finalised.
The series is written and executive-produced by Metcalf, who will serve as showrunner, director and actor. Asif Akbar and Kelly Arjen will also executive-produce with Akbar directing some of the episodes. Pellegrino will serve as co-executive producer.
Filming begins next month in Las Vegas on the six-episode project, which doesn’t currently have a network aboard and is being independently financed by the producers. The plan is to sell it after production.
Akbar recently directed the crime-thriller Boneyard starring Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, which is releasing this July from Lionsgate.

Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for American Rust: Broken Justice.] American Rust has returned for Season 2 on Prime Video under the new title American Rust: Broken Justice, and with it comes a big question: Is this season based on a book? American Rust‘s first season, which originally aired on Showtime and is now streaming on Prime Video, was inspired by Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel of the same name. But Broken Justice deviates from the source material, instead building upon the story that unfolded in Season 1. (Credit: Dennis Mong / ©Showtime / Courtesy Everett Collection) Season 1 also swayed from its source material, taking the basic structure and plot and repurposing it for television. Now, in Season 2, Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) is moving beyond his former role as Buell’s police chief to take on a gig at the Pittsburgh Pd in an effort to infiltrate a circle of dirty cops. Everything that takes place this time around is made up entirely ...

It’s been nearly three full years since American Rust last graced screens, but as the latest season titled American Rust: Broken Justice heads to Prime Video, the story is picking up only four months after the events of Season 1. For Buell resident Grace Poe (Maura Tierney), this means the beginning of a new chapter with her boyfriend, Del Harris (Jeff Daniels), and her son, Billy (Alex Neustaedter), who is still recovering from injuries sustained after being wrongfully convicted for Season 1’s central murder. After spending most of Season 1 fighting for her boy’s innocence and trying to free him from prison, her goals are shifting a bit this time around. “It’s a very different journey because the two men in her life have sort of… I don’t want to say abandoned her, but I think that’s how the character feels,” Tierney tells TV Insider of Grace...

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Amazon is pushing back on a report that suggested Freevee will shut down this spring.
On Thursday, AdWeek reported that Freevee – Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service – will be shutting down in the next few weeks, possibly by early April. According to the publication, with the addition of advertising to Amazon’s flagship Prime Video streaming service, Freevee has been rendered redundant.
But an Amazon spokesperson called the report inaccurate, saying in a statement to Gold Derby that “There are no changes to Freevee. Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and Originals, all for free.” The spokesperson did not directly address the future of Freevee.

Well, here’s a more somber crime thriller to quiet things down in the multiplexes as the Summer movie season of noisy blockbusters wraps up with the Labor Day weekend. Its setting is only a few years back, but most of its themes are fairly timeless as we bear witness to another young person (actually several) from the mean streets of the East Coast who is swallowed up by the drug trade. Oh, but there’s one sole (really aided by a couple more) who won’t allow him to be another statistic, another outline on the filthy sidewalk. Now she’s not your typical crusading heroine, as she’s dealing with her own flaws and weaknesses. Still, this struggling newspaper reporter earns the right to be called The Good Mother.
It opens on the dark early morning streets of Albany, NY in 2016 as a man in his twenties dashes from corner to corner,...

If you've been dying to watch the first four seasons of the Magnum P.I. reboot but haven't been able to find it, then this is the news you've been waiting for.
According to TV Line, the first four seasons of the Jay Hernandez procedural will be available to stream on the Amazon-owned Freevee beginning Friday, September 1, 2023.
The first four seasons will be available to stream for free with ads, but if you've been keeping up with shows like Almost Paradise, then you're probably aware the ads are not as bad as they could be.
News of the show landing a new streaming home comes as the series prepares for its last-ever episodes on NBC.
Magnum P.I. has had a long and storied history, having begun its life on CBS.
At the time of its cancellation, observers and fans were shocked because the Hawaii-set drama was one of the network's most-watched shows.

Jeff Daniels is ready to tell his story. The actor, who has been in everything from “The Purple Rose of Cairo” to “Dumb and Dumber,” is readying his audio-only memoir, “Alive and Well Enough,” as a 12-part series for Audible, with the first season debuting in September (with a second season on the way).
According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”
“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

And Variety reports that Slash has already lined up his next horror project: he’s teaming with Steven Schneider of Room 101, Inc. and Spooky Pictures – a producer whose genre credits include Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, and Old – for a film called Janus.
Jason Zada (The Forest) will be directing Janus from a screenplay he wrote with Nate Atkins. The story centers on three band members seeking refuge in an old farmhouse where they encounter a woman harboring an unspeakable secret.
Alex Neustaedter (American Rust), Natalie Alyn Lind (Big Sky), Jack Kilmer (Lords of Chaos), Grace Van Dien (Stranger Things), and M.C. Gainey (Con Air) have already been cast in the film.

Here's some news we don't love for you.
Showtime has swung the axe on Vanessa Bayer's I Love That For You.
The comedy has been canceled after just one season on the premium cabler.
"I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime," the network said.
"We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward."
Inspired by Bayer's own story of overcoming childhood leukemia, the comedy centered on Joanna Gold (Bayer), who dreamed of becoming a host at a home-shopping channel.
Molly Shannon starred as Jackie, the charismatic star of the network and Joanna's idol.
Jenifer Lewis played Patricia, the network's icy, enigmatic founder and CEO.
Additional series regulars included Paul James, Ayden Mayeri, Matt Rogers, and Punam Patel.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

Striking writers in New York City said they disrupted filming of FBI: Most Wanted for a second straight day by heading off a planned location shoot at a public park in Brooklyn on Friday morning and later by causing slowdowns of work on the Dick Wolf-ep’d crime drama starring Dylan McDermott and Alexa Davalos at a nearby soundstage.
Union organizers tipped off to a location shoot at Monsignor McGolrick Park in the Greenpoint neighborhood showed up at 7 a.m. Friday morning and waited, but no film crew showed up, representatives from the Writers Guild of America East told Deadline.
It was unclear whether the show’s producers paused filming because of picketers, but WGA representatives said they saw call sheets confirming the shoot there, and they took credit for intercepting it before it could get underway.

It’s been six months since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his portfolio, and he knows what a healthy swath of Hollywood has said. He’s read the network eulogies and seen the variations on “Rip Showtime” tweets. He’s even sat with folks who have bemoaned his stated plan to lean into franchises, be it more Billions or Dexter. And it would all probably irk him more if it weren’t exactly what he needed.
“People not thinking it’s going to work is the motivation. Like, great, perfect,” he says as he dives into a rotisserie chicken salad.
It’s a rainy March afternoon, and The Terrace at The Maybourne Beverly Hills, which McCarthy has selected for lunch (and lodging), lacks its usual bustle yet still has a smattering of soggy stars like Halle Berry, Jerrod Carmichael and Justin Bieber. Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra signaled during an investor conference on Feb. 28 that the entertainment giant could spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast due to the integration of Paramount+ and Showtime. He also touted the opportunity to “reinvigorate the Showtime content slate” and the Paramount studio’s “killer movie slate” this year.
Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Media, Internet and Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, Fla. in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the studio lineup for the current year. “It’s a killer slate,” he said, adding that it looked even better than the one that delivered a strong 2022, led by Top Gun: Maverick. The slate includes new Mission: Impossible, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Paw Patrol movies, as well as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Creatives are burning with rage over Hollywood’s hottest new trend: streaming platforms’ habit of canceling finished films and TV series before they’ve aired or pulling projects from platforms and shelving them indefinitely.
The Hollywood Reporter has been asking around about the effects of consolidation, budget cuts and tax write-offs kneecapping projects like Batgirl, Snowpiercer, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Westworld, among others. It’s happening all over town as entertainment companies have been forced to contend with consolidation, inflation, a possible recession and a constant chase for subscribers.
“It’s been horrifying,” prolific creator Rian Johnson (Glass Onion) tells THR. “The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things.”
Last month, THR reported that two Netflix feature films were up for grabs after the streamer opted not to distribute the films.

Paramount Global reached more than 77 million streaming subscribers worldwide as of the end of 2022, up from 67 million as of the end of September, as Paramount+ posted a record quarterly user gain, the Hollywood giant said Thursday. However, higher streaming investments were a drag on the entertainment company’s bottom line, and TV unit advertising sales dropped.
Paramount, led by CEO Bob Bakish, reported that its Paramount+ streamer hit nearly 56 million subscribers as of the end of the year, after adding a company-record 9.9 million subs compared with the 46 million recorded as of the end of September, driven by such popular content as blockbuster movie Top Gun: Maverick.
“Subscriber growth was driven by a strong content slate, including the NFL, the expansion of existing franchises like Top Gun: Maverick and 1923, the success of new franchises like Tulsa King and Smile, as well as CBS’ overall entertainment slate,” the company said. “Internationally,...

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...

IFC has dropped the trailer and art for its upcoming comedy “Paint,” and leading man Owen Wilson goes full-on Bob Ross mode in it.
The film stars Wilson as Carl Nagyl, Vermont’s top TV painter who has everything going for him, from a fanbase to a van and even a perm, until a younger artist takes his spotlight. Nagyl is reminiscent of beloved TV icon Bob Ross, who led PBS’ instructional TV program “The Joy of Painting” from 1983 to 1994. He passed away in 1995 at 52 years old.
Wilson leads the film, having been previously featured in “Zoolander,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Bottle Rocket,” “Loki” and “The French Dispatch.” The actor also has the upcoming film “Haunted Mansion” on his docket with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto and Winona Ryder.
Joining the Oscar-nominated star, the “Paint” cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root and newcomer Lucy Freyer.

Paramount+ has followed other streamers like HBO Max in removing some of its original programming off the platform, including the likes of Jordan Peele’s “The Twilight Zone” reboot and “The Real World: Homecoming New York.” The news comes two days after Paramount announced that Showtime would be undergoing a rebrand and merging with Paramount+’s premium service later this year.
Other titles no longer showing up on the platform include “Coyote,” “No Activity,” “Guilty Party” and “The Harper House.” “The Twilight Zone,” which was canceled after two seasons, was a project from the now-defunct CBS All Access (later rebranded to Paramount+). The removal of “Homecoming,” a spinoff to the reality series “The Real World” that aired for three decades on MTV, is more unclear given that the series had yet to receive a formal cancellation.

Yesterday in a memo to employees, Showtime and Paramount Media Networks President and CEO Chris McCarthy said the newly-merging brands will "divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views." In a move that is disappointing but not surprising, it turns out the company's cost-cutting measures involve not just canceling shows but also purging them entirely from streaming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a number of TV series have already been pulled from the Showtime streaming platform, which is set to be renamed Paramount+ with Showtime.
Among the shows that have reportedly disappeared are the unique and imaginative Jim Carrey project "Kidding" and the Kirsten Dunst-led dark comedy "On Becoming A God in Central Florida," both of which were critically acclaimed. The move will also bring changes to programming — originals like Kidding, Super Pumped and American Rust, among others, were removed from the Showtime platform — and likely additional layoffs as Paramount CEO Bob Bakish acknowledged “uncertainty for the teams working on these brands and businesses.”
Wall Street analysts took stock of the plans, weighing in on Paramount’s streaming business in broader terms. Both the Showtime linear pay-tv channel and the premium tier of Paramount+ will be rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime, with Chris McCarthy to lead the Showtime studio and linear channel, while Tom Ryan oversees the streaming business. Pricing and other details are expected to be disclosed later.

As reported yesterday, Showtime has been cleaning house as it goes through a rebranding process with Paramount+. The Hollywood Reporter gives an extended list of the Showtime originals getting canceled. Along with original programing of American Gigolo and Let The Right One In, more titles like Jim Carrey’s comedy, Kidding, as well as Kirsten Dunst’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida have been given the axe with the likes of Super Pumped and American Rust. While these shows were already not getting additional seasons, they’ve been removed from the service entirely, which is a shame. Some, such as Super Pumped, were limited series and presumably evergreen.
All of this cancelation news comes on the heels of both the premium cable network and the online streamer, Paramount+ goes through a merging rebranding to become Paramount+ on Showtime. Chris McCarthy, the President and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks,...

We learned last night that Showtime has decided not to order a second season of the “Let the Right One In” series that debuted last year, this news coming along with the reveal that Showtime will be folded into the Paramount+ streaming service beginning later this year. On top of that, we’ve now learned that the series has been removed from Showtime entirely.
THR reports today that “Let the Right One In” is one of several shows that have been removed from the Showtime streaming service ahead of the upcoming fusion with Paramount+.
THR details, “The list includes American Gigolo and Let the Right One In — both of which were canceled earlier Monday — as well as Jim Carrey vehicle Kidding, the first season of anthology Super Pumped, On Becoming a God in Central Florida and American Rust. Also vanishing from the Showtime streaming platform are seasons of acquired content including The End and Wakefield.

Showtime viewers have complained after a number of series were reportedly pulled from the US network’s streaming platform.
On Monday (30 January), it was also announced that Showtime was being integrated into Paramount’s main brand, and will be known going forward as Paramount+ With Showtime.
Among the original series to have been removed from the streaming service, per The Hollywood Reporter, are crime series American Gigolo, vampire drama Let the Right one In, and Kidding, starring Jim Carrey.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida and American Rust were also taken down from Showtime’s catalogue.
Showtime has seemingly become the latest platform to take advantage of the tax write-downs available for shows that have been removed from their catalogue.
Companies such as HBO Max have faced criticism from fans and creators for removing underperforming films and TV shows from their streaming catalogues, in order to maximise tax benefits.
